2024 It's been over 20 years since I first played Metal Gear Solid 1, and yet, I can say without hesitation that this game left an unforgettable mark on me. At the time, it completely revolutionized how I viewed video games. The story, the depth of the characters, the emotions it conveyed... I had never experienced anything like it. Every cutscene, every moment of gameplay was a masterpiece of storytelling and design. Snake, Liquid, Ocelot... these characters are forever etched in my memory. The way the game broke the fourth wall with Psycho Mantis or the tension of every stealth mission was simply mind-blowing. This game truly deserves a remake, so a new generation can experience what we did. For me, Metal Gear Solid will forever remain an unforgettable experience, a work of art that defined what video games could be
"What are you waiting for, shoot" "Don't talk to me like a rookie" "I'm telling you, shoot" "AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH" I must admit, I let Meryl die my very first play-through.
I still have a very old official playstation magazine with a Kojima interview in it, about how he wanted a Hans Zimmer flavour for all the game's music. That is how it was worded. He certainly got it and I always remember that article. Every. Single. Track. Is full of win. Memories evoked. It's the perfect original game soundtrack for the game's atmosphere. There have been many games with bigger budgets now and better sound production, but I haven't seen a game before or since that has beaten how spot on this soundtrack is.
I feel as though a lot of the best games were made during the PSX era. I mean look at things like Vagrant Story. And, well, MGS. Somehow I feel as though the technological restrictions only served to sharpen the creativity of a lot of these guys. And some of the best and most iconic VGM was made in that era too. Maybe you can call it bias or nostalgia since I grew up with them, I know there's a lot of good music these days too. But still... there's just something about them.
"We're not tools of the government... or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing- the only thing- I was good at. But at least I fought for what I believed in. "
Doesn’t get any better than MGS1. Everything is a masterpiece in this game. The story, artwork, music, voice acting, pacing, gameplay, and so much more. I love all the Metal Gear games but this one will always be my favorite and the best in the series.
@@GP1583 I hope you are joking! I didn't even play snake eater. MGS is the best game ever made. I bought snake eater and my cousins used to play it when they came around but I never played it wierdly because I wasnt into it. I don't know why you think it's the best unless you are comparing it with the latest one.
"Cavern" is pretty much burned into my memory...and automatically images of that introductory section of the game enter my mind (and in the cell). "You'll just have to wait for the elevator to come down...you better hide somewhere."
Damned...these games...the milestones you encounter, since the NES-days up to now, really get stuck with you, both the soundtracks and the experiences. You never forget them. It´s quite fantastic.
The reason modern games don't achieve this is bc their all casinos created by billionaire corporations, in order to suck gamers dry, one dlc at a time.
Even today, there are some game/movie studios that manage to do it, but sadly not as often. Its incredible how music can have a huge impact, even if the graphics were quite limited in today's standards
@@hansfrankfurter2903 its all subjective. What I think is a masterpiece doesnt mean youll agree with me. Red Orchestra 2 has amazing orchestral pieces that really depicts the atmosphere of the game. Everything composed by Anthony Romero regarding mediveal fantasy is a masterpiece, and its not just me who thinks so, but the whole HoMM community as well. Some of the Knights of Honor tracks, especially the "First Battle" track in my opinionis the definition of an original design. And lets not forget both Divinity: Original Sin games as well (whose composer is the same guy from Knights of Honor). When it comes to movies, Das Boot easily takes the cake regarding the musical soundtrack which is composed by Doldinger, and Ben Hur from 1960s or so is right next to it. Thats all I can remember on the top of my head. Im pretty sure there are more examples, but rn I cant remember them.
@@hansfrankfurter2903 Final Fantasy 7 had a great soundtrack as well for the time, really fit the game perfectly. The original from 97 I mean. The 2020 remake was pretty good too though.
I'm 28 years old, and this week, at the urging of my roommate, just played this game for the first time. While it's not my type of game, I will have to say that the storyline is phenomenal, and on top of that, I've been listening to the soundtrack for three days in a row now. The music from this game is simply beautiful.
Your friend has excellent taste then :) MGS3 also has an amazing storyline. I really liked MGS2's story aswell, although many would agree that it is too much at times.
BlaccEagle It's good so far. The lack of fluid control in MGS one was really detracting sometimes. That will change this year. Just bought a switch and BOTW. 1 - Super mario 64 2 - Mario kart 64 3 - Goldeneye 4 - Wave race 5 - Banjoe Kazooie 6 - Diddy Kong racing
Metal…..gear… such a lovely and sad memory for me. A previous best friend of mine introduced me, I fell in love with the games and the lore. They told me everything about the game to know, about the canons, their head-canons, and everything you can imagine. We stayed up in the latest of hours just talking and reminiscing over how the games meant so much to us. We would ( embarrassingly enough ) write so much fan-fiction and spin-offs of the game, mostly about Big Boss and Ocelot until we couldn’t even think. I ended up falling for my friend too. Unrequited love. Things ended roughly, and I still miss them. Sometimes, I just listen to these soundtracks just to remind me of them. Although it can make me emotional, it is worth it because it makes me remember how amazing it felt to bond so much over something that could be so simple to others. Metal Gear changed my life, I will always have those beautiful memories of my friend.
I recently sat down and streamed this entire game. I love it. The story is amazing and, while some parts of it haven't aged well (mainly some of the bosses), it still controls fantastically, and truly made me a fan of stealth games. I'm already playing it again for another unlockable, which is a sign of quality.
scarlettears the music from twin snakes is good but more ambient. not many memorable themes. all tracks sound more or less the same. but the music during the climbing down of the com tower is awesome!
+scarlettears Original definitely had better music and voice acting, but I think Twin Snakes had better gameplay. The fact that you can move slow and silently on metal floors, addition of tranquilizer gun, dive roll and that being seen by soldiers doesn't put the alert mode up immediately is a plus in my book. Sure they made most bosses too easy, but overall I think gameplay improvements from Sons of Liberty (my favorite MGS game) were welcomed. But I still just slightly prefer the original. For example, Raven's tank is bullshittingly frustrating in Twin Snakes.
amaurythewarrior I wasn't talking about the controls, but the overall gameplay elements that I listed on my previous comment. If we're talking about some serious improvements, it's the battles against Sniper Wolf, since in Twin Snakes you can zoom in and out and locate her quicker, because let's be honest: there was nothing more frustrating in the original than seeing Wolf and not having enough time to shoot her because she was faster and Snake's aim was sent all over the cealing. For some reason I find the tank battle really hard in TTS and much easier in the original. I don't really know what causes it, but that's how I feel. People often say that only the endless stairs are harder in Twin Snakes, since in the remake stun grenades don't affect on all the guards, but only those around Snake.
Hudesko yeah, i meant gameplay when i said control, but control are improved as well. infliltration is more interesting although once you get the suppressor ... I think the physics of the grenades are a little more realistic in tts, and that may be why you find it harder. it's a lot easier to get them inside the M1 in MGS as far as i can remember.

The main theme from a game made in 1998 has absolutely no right to go as hard as that. Well, time to replay this again. I'll never forget how downright unsettling the music gets sometimes and it's the only one even to this day that just puts me on edge with just the music.
Warhead storage is one of my favourites. It captures the folly of humankind and it's attempt to meddle with the forces of nature. It also makes me think of nuclear war, the bombs dropped in Japan and all the horrifying nuclear tests that the United States conducted in the 1950's.

This is the best video game I have ever played. I remember playing the battle against REX together with my cousin and brother at age 9, 11 and 12. We cried the shit out of ourselves as Grey Fox died. The perhaps saddest scene in a video game I have ever encountered... "From the outside we might have seemed like a happy brother and sister. But every time I looked at her, I saw her parents eyes staring back at me..." Perfect, uncompared dramaturgy in the final scenes.

PixelCortex ahggg .. my childhood :') ... and......... meryl
incertecerebroaqui was my child hood too
20 years ago, I picked up this game, and it changed my life.
For me, Metal Gear Solid will forever remain an unforgettable experience, a work of art that defined what video games could be
"What are you waiting for, shoot"
"Don't talk to me like a rookie"
"I'm telling you, shoot"
"AAHHHHHHHHHHHHH"
I must admit, I let Meryl die my very first play-through.
jeff ghant How the hell do you save Meryl if you didn't bring a sniper rifle beforehand?!
***** Yup.
***** Remember, if you quit during Ocelot's torture she dies.
+jeff ghant Same here, the torture scene was so freaking hard i remember that i let my father tries to help me pass through. lool -.-
RaphSieg007 Yup. At least she didn't really die in the series so that was cool. Even though it took like 9 years to find out.
Best soundtrack ever!
+Solid Snake Did you like my sunglasses snake?
looks like we have an encounter here...
Liquid Snake Liquid!
Damn right
somebody calls sniper wolf, psycho mantis and revolver ocelot?
The composer is a pure genius.
i never heard this soundtrack before, but i agree this incredibly well done.
This and the God of War soundtracks were perfection. I love them as much today as I did then.

Doesn’t get any better than MGS1. Everything is a masterpiece in this game. The story, artwork, music, voice acting, pacing, gameplay, and so much more. I love all the Metal Gear games but this one will always be my favorite and the best in the series.

Masterpiece. What a blessing Hideo Kojima has been to the world of gaming!
They really knew how to capture the mood and make music back then.
Even today, there are some game/movie studios that manage to do it, but sadly not as often. Its incredible how music can have a huge impact, even if the graphics were quite limited in today's standards
@@bademusoctavianjuvenal2702 u know any good games with top scores like this one?

Still get chills from Enclosure.
BlaccEagle I'm playing MGS2 now actually, slowly but surely. I'm really digging the new game mechanics, and how the controls are a lot more fluid.
That's cool man :), hopefully you'll like the game, I know I did.
BlaccEagle It's good so far. The lack of fluid control in MGS one was really detracting sometimes. I'd be trying to hug a wall around the corner from a guard, and instead of doing it, Snake's derp ass would just run right out in plain sight, and I'd be like *Encounter theme* NO SNAKE WHAT THE SHIT ARE YOU DOING JADGJFFHJHf
PyroFox04 Haha been there, done that my friend.
I still get goosebumps over encouter. It's timeless.
That Cavern theme instantly takes me back to being a kid lol the whole soundtrack is so nostalgic
yeah me figuring out the controls and being to shit scared to move. Probably took half an hour to leave that cargo area

This was really ahead of its time. Over 20 years later and the soundtrack is still one of the most epic pieces today.
REX'S LAIR IS SO GOOD.

This is the song that stuck with me all these years...
To this day, unquestionably a Master Piece
I just remember the days I used to play this game from night until the morning... watching how snake was doing his mission. God, I swear that the whole game was an epic movie where snake was the last one realising about the truth. The songs were so deep and cool that it engaged you instantaneously.
Mantis' Hymn is soo creepy
The Best is Yet to Come is just BEAUTIFUL
I can’t believe it’s been 22 years for this masterpiece 😭

Encounter is the best... well encounter music ever, it always get's the adrenaline pumping
Not as much as Escape lol
Such a shame that they didn't keep this music for The Twin Snakes
scarlettears the music from twin snakes is good but more ambient. not many memorable themes. all tracks sound more or less the same. but the music during the climbing down of the com tower is awesome!
+scarlettears
Original definitely had better music and voice acting, but I think Twin Snakes had better gameplay.
Hudesko obviously controls are better. but i didn't find the tank too hard in TTS. except maybe on extreme ^^
amaurythewarrior
I wasn't talking about the controls, but the overall gameplay elements that I listed on my previous comment.
25:06 , Mantis' Hymn, one of the best track ever...

Whatever happened to those days whatever happened those nights
Do you remember the times when little things made you sad
Do you remember when the simple things made you cry
Is it just me or is it just us
Feeling lost in this world
Why do we have to hurt each other why do you have to shed tears
Life can be beautiful if you try
Life can be joyful if we try
Tell me I'm not alone
Tell me we are not alone in this world fighting against the wind
Do you remember when the simple things made you happy
Do you remember the times when little things made you laugh
You know life is simple
Because the best things in life is yet to come
