Yes, it works flawlessly. I have been using this mid 2012 model for past four years. Just upgraded to 512gb SSD, and installed new Catalina. I am super happy now. But, few days back I have faced a flickering issue with the display. It happened for three continues days, I was so worried. I went to Apple service center, they are of no use. They told me it is display issue, andit costs around 40k to replace, which is doesn't make sense. So, I did some experiments and reinstalled os again, luckily it worked. But I don't know what is the issue. You have any idea why this flickering is happening?
Mahesh Golla if its the 3000 or 4000 series intel graphics then its most likely that card failing. The 2012 macbooks with those graphics are notorious for having issues like this
Mahesh Golla No the guy above me is wrong. Those failures only apply to the 2011 MacBooks that are notorious to have a GPU failure. The Mid 2012 are bulletproof (expect the Hard drive connector issue, which rarely happens). I have the same issue as you and the problem is the Display Connector. The display connector for your MacBook has gotten worse because of wear and tear (every time you open/close the lid it weakens). What this does is that it creates weird lines sometimes (when you move around the laptop physically or reposition the kid) but goes away. This can be fixed by replacing the display connector (which is cheap, but it just a lot of work). In my opinion, it’s a very small issue so there’s no point fixing it (unless it gets really bad at one point) and since the display is kinda out-dated you might as well connect a Monitor and turn your MacBook into a computer. But if your computer *FREEZES* with weird lines then this mean ones of your Ram Sticks (or both) are failing (so try using one ram stick to see which one is faulty), which is caused by wear and tear of course. This only applies to really old Ram Sticks. I believe you have the display connector issue (the second paragraph).
Mahesh Golla Yeah you can search up the issue on Google. What’s weird is that I’ve just started getting this issue 2 days ago, and I spent yesterday finding out what the issue was (the same day I found your comment). I predict this issue is just going to get worse, which is 🙄 annoying. But I still love my Mid 2012 lol
Catalina bricked my mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Would not boot at all. Spent about 16 hours transferring data and wiping drives to get it back to how it was.
Hey hey, I'm about to do this thing! In your experience which is the latest OS that runs smooth on a mid 2012 Macbook Pro? Currently on Sierra, can't even open videos but still somehow works great for my music production
I got a MacBook Pro A1278 for $224 last summer. It was a used one from my school district. The good part is that apart from the battery not working past an hour and half the rest of the pc is almost perfect condition. the teacher only used it during class and never to it home. But she did always connected it during class. So I guess that is why the battery sucks now. It's my first mac and I love it. Want to buy a 21.5-inch mac used from 2015 / 16 for my son are those any good?
They're good, it all depends what you want to use it for and how much you can get it for. As far as your Macbook Pro, you should be able to buy a new battery for that machine and swap it out.
I maxed out this little bad boy with 16GB OWC RAM and 1TB Samsung 860 Pro RAID 0. Man, this thing can compete with my friend's 16" Macbook pro! It's blazing fast!
Yeah man same deal. I bought mine out mid-2012 at that time and I'm still using the same machine. Upgraded the ram to 16gb and changed the battery because it became bloated for some reason. HD is still a regular HD but planning to upgrade soon to ssd. Got Catalina on it and bootcamped Windows 10. Runs alright, though I feel it could be a lot faster with the ssd. Though I might need to ask you about your egpu. What exactly is the one you're using and any other recommendations? Thanks man
I having the exact same configuration with 8GB ram, windows in boot camp, the thing is after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.4, my machine became Ovan, I tried to reinstalled afresh but still the same situation, not sure how to fix that.8GB RAM SSD 1 TB , Bootcamp windows. Please let me know if you have any idea.
Hi, great info on your channel. I have the exact same computer and wanted to upgrade to Catalina also. My question is..do i need to upgrade the ram for it to work? I have the orginal 4 gb and it seems it's not compatible. Someone told me i would also have to get an ssd drive for it to work. Are those the two things i need for this to work? Any advice would be greatly appreciated..thank you. Ps i am running 10.12 sierra..so after the hardware install would i just go straight to installing Catalina? Thanks once again!
The only issues I’ve found are major ram usage even with 16gb and 2-4 programs running and also the unlock with watch feature is missing because of the airport card isn’t supported
I have a late 2012 Mac Mini I got off eBay for less than $300. It came with an SSD and 8GB of ram. It runs Catalina just fine. Install was a pain in the butt but it runs just fine.
Eevnos It would download and then insist that the internal SSD wasn't partitioned correctly. I wasn't the only one with this problem. I took it to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and they got it working just fine and didn't charge me anything,
My MacBook Pro is exactly this one ! When I write something in my browser or here in the yt comments, there is a little lag when I start to type using Catalina version, after this, it runs ok . But I didn't had the lag on MOJAVE. My Macbook Has 16gigaRam and a Samgsing 1Tb SSD 850EVO. Does yours run OK ?
Hi. The video is very detail. do you use the eGPU when you produced the video while you record the screen of MBP 2012. Because my MBP 2012 screen is very bad.
as an owner of "maxxed" 2012 MBP 13" (i7, 16GB ram, 1x SSD, 1x HDD), one thing which I highly recommend is to completely clean up the internals and replace fresh thermal paste on cpu, bought used model few years back as well, after reapplying new thermal paste, temps dropped 20-ish °C so now instead 100°C I'm getting around 80°C max, definitely worth it :)
I shelved my MBP mid 2012 with i7 750gb hd and 8 gigs of ram when it became too slow in 2020 with macOS Catalina.. So I bought the first M1 MBP and was happy. Since then, Ive seen so many videos of people bringing their legacy MBP's back to life with hardware upgrades. So i decided to give it a try. Upgraded the battery, HD to SSD and added the 16 gigs of ram, reset the SMC and PRAM and BOOM. Its become my daily driver again. Well worth the upgrades. Ill be sticking with Catalina since I have no hardware issues, but might think about going back to Mojave or High Sierra.
How is the Battery life on it? I’m still on el capitain. I’ve update to high sierra 2 years ago and it was draining my battery like in mins… not having issues with El Capitan.
do you know any work-around to create a RAID 0 on Mojave? I have x2 500 gig SSDs that I wanna RAID in my 2012 MacBook Pro, but I'd prefer to keep Mojave or even Catalina vs. downgrading my OS
Any tips for upgrading this computer (mid 2012 MacBook Pro) to a SSD drive? I have had 3, all have had drive failures, thankfully Applecare replaced all of my macbooks, but the fact that with in a few years I've had this many issues is pretty absurd. I know my HDD drive is starting to go now and am looking to change to a SDD to prolong the life of my Mid2012 MacBookPro since it got me through college and stuff we have some memories together and i dont want to get rid of this Laptop yet!
Stephan Shansey if it’s the non-retina one you can just take the screws off the bottom, take the old drive out, put the new drive in and close it up. When you boot the machine boot into recovery and install the OS and then copy your files back from wherever you have them backed up to. There are lots of tutorials online.
Hello Eevnos, I am having macbook pro 13 inch mid 2012 non retina laptop. Initially it came up with 4 GB RAM and 250GB Hard drive. In between my hard drive got damaged and i had to replace that, this was then replaced in apple service centre and i put 500GB hard drive. I am not heavily using this laptop but in between i did the OS upgrade from the default to version up. The laptop performance was not great and was observing the performance issue even when i click on the app or two open any app. In the recent time i thought to upgrade to Catalina, so i upgraded the RAM to 10GB (i.e. default RAM is 2GB+2GB). I brought 8GB RAM and upgraded one of the slot, so currently my two slots are like 8GB + 2GB. Then i upgraded the system to Catalina, there was no direct upgrade so i upgraded to previous two OS and finally Catalina. The upgrade went fine but the system was not that fast in performance. Till today the laptop performance is not good. I saw your this video that you have purchased mid 2012 macbook non retina and made it work on Catalina and it is super fast. Could you please suggest what could be wrong with my system. Also, just to let you know, i do not have much apps or games in the laptop. Any help could be of great help. Also, after seeing your Windows 10 video in macbook, i am looking to make the book drive for Windows 10 but only after performance improvement. Looking forward for your support on this. Thank you in advance!
I attempted to install Catalina on my mid 2012 macbook pro, it totally screwed the computer up, it was about 1/2 installed when the computer restarted itself. After 10 restarts i gave up cause it stalled at halfway installed. It put my computer in endless boot loop and I reinstalled my Mojave backup. Thank the lord I backed the computer up right before installing, that saved my ass and I'm scared to attempt a reinstall ever since

crazy, I also got mine for $150! One thing that backs me up to upgrade is the battery, was it better in Catalina? I'm still in Mojave and I only get 4hrs of battery life on work and some light browsing.
I think I get a little more than that, not a crazy amount though. When j got this machine I got one with a very low cycle count though. You can buy replacement batteries if yours is starting to go out, they're pretty easy to put in on these machines.

Hey man, any overheating issues or computer temp going up with the 16gb RAM --especially when video editing or using some processing power akin to production applications like it? I'm still holding the fort with El Capitan since it is to me the fastest OS to operate in this machine.
You should definitely replace the thermal paste on your machine. It's a relatively simple process to remove the heat sync, remove the old paste and apply new paste. Does wonders for the heat. Also, make sure the cooling fans are spinning.
My Macbook is the same as yours. And I was afraid to update because of rumors on the internet. But now, seeing your video, I decided to update. I'll do a backup first, of course. hahahaha Thanks
Here's a question: how do I clone my hard drive and install a new one with all my files AND make it work? The reason I am asking is simply because I learned there is a difference between "how to" and "but what if it doesn't work?"
On my MacBook, It’s so slow with only using 100gbs of storage. It has the same specs as this guy’s but it also take like 10 mins to open safari and it’s just extremely slow. Any tips?
I’m not versed in this things but after I upgraded to Catalina I found that my macbook really lags now. when I navigate through safari for example it takes longer now than before to even open another tab. Opening and closing stuff takes long. When using Speak screen, the spoken sentences are chopped (parts are missing) when I play a video on youtube sometimes the screen just freezes and I can hear no audio and when it finally continues its as though it skipped some time in the video and replays on a later time. Lot’s more :/ Its an 2012 macbook pro as well and I checked that I have lots of memory left. so... maybe I also need to switch to better ram or something. Or maybe the lags are an aftermath of the macbook being continuously turned on for some days just to upgrade to Catalina. I dunno what to do :/
Eevnos Eevnos I saw a few other videos like ruclips.net/video/rCFstE7xE88/видео.html and I think I’ll upgrade my ram and if the finances allow it maybe also switch from the mechanical drive with a solid state drive. I am not sure though which upgrade to to prioritise. I mean as I understand the ram should be prioritised because it is directly correlated to the speed of the Prozesses and I dont want to have a laggy experience any longer. I dont mind if some loading times take longer if my macbook at leat has no issues doing more than one task at a time. At least that what I understood that uprating ram can do for me.so I have been looking into what is important in choosing mac ram and as I understand it, I need something that has the same speed and operating voltage as my previous ram.
Hello! I have a mid 2012 the Mac with Catalina and I updated it with 16GB RAM and a 120GB WD Green SSD Drive. I have some issues using Premiere Pro (drops, slow playback). I analyzed every specs of SSD Drives and I think the cheap WD Green may be the weak point. In the other hand I had read about this machine works perfect with MacOS High Sierra and even Mojave. Catalina may "slow down" things. So, there are my questions: Which SSD drive did you installed on it? You said about video editing even in 4K, I can do only 1080p with glitches. Did you test your Mac with High Sierra or Mojave? I'm planning to get a new faster SSD and load it with High Sierra but after spend the bucks maybe you can give some advice. Thanks a have a nice day :D
XQue Design Studio Yeah, it’s only the internal display that has the limited resolution. When you use an external display just change it in the display area of system settings.
Hello Steve, I was hesitated of taking the BIG decision for upgrading my MacBook Pro (15, mid-2012, i7 2.6 GHz, 16 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB). So I was thinking why not searching for other users' experiences regarding running macOS Catalina on an older MacBook Pros, and I found my self her watching this short and helpful video. (Liked) your short answer of that question, with an helpful tip about Mojave. Thank you so much Steve, I made my decision! Marhaba (مرحبا) from 🇰🇼 (Kuwait)
I am talking now from Catalina. Unfortunately, I have a bad news here! I DON'T RECOMMEND TO THOSE WHO HAVE MBP MID-2012 TO UPGRADE THEIR DEVICE TO THIS macOS!!* WHY?, because I have now an issue. This is about a slow response when opening anything (files, folders, system preferences, trash, ...etc) as a first time (directly after upgraded or when restarting the device or even waking it up from sleeping mode). But, while trying to open them as a second and up times, everything is great. I feel this new macOS (Catalina) is like a browser. When you opening a new page, it takes time to be loaded. Then, from the second time the browser will display it from the cache unless it has been emptied. Seriously, I am thinking to get back to my old OS X system, which is Sierra or go to High Sierra. * Clarification: I don't know if this will happen to other older devices or not.
Currently, I found this helpful article (www.geekrar.com/how-to-speed-up-slow-running-macos-catalina/#Clean_Up_Your_Mac%E2%80%99s_Drive). It's about how to speed up Catalina on an old Mac machines like mine.

Angie Soon i have macbook pro mid 2012 upgraded 8 gb ram and 500 gb ssd, this mac is fast, but for video editing performance is not good, even if you just making cinematic video with simple effects is not smooth. espefially if you’re using Adobe Premiere, the playback is lagging even in the lowest playback resolution. my advice if you buy this mac, dont use adobe, use Final Cut Pro instead, because I feel that it run smoother than using Adobe Premiere. sorry if there’s mistake, english is not my main language✌🏻

I upgraded the 4gig RAM model that I have to 8 and it works great. I should have opted for 12gigs and also added an SSD but even still it did the job for my child's distance learning.

Verry helpful video. Would u recommend keeping it plugged in all the time or let the battery discharge completely and recharge at least once a month? Thanks.
I inherited my daughters old school Mac, and with 8 gig RAN & a 500 gig SSD it’s running Catalina & Studio One 4 line a charm.

My 2012 3th gen i5 still runs like a king with catalina, now for my mbp early 2011..
@@MrIDGAF I guess you are right about this.
If it’s possible, the OS may be faulty and it’s caused this issue. But I believe it’s the display connector since (let’s face it) it’s a old machine

You can also just use the provided remote installing tool and make a real fresh Catalina install..
It's blazing fast!

as an owner of "maxxed" 2012 MBP 13" (i7, 16GB ram, 1x SSD, 1x HDD), one thing which I highly recommend is to completely clean up the internals and replace fresh thermal paste on cpu, bought used model few years back as well, after reapplying new thermal paste, temps dropped 20-ish °C so now instead 100°C I'm getting around 80°C max, definitely worth it :)

I dunno what to do :/
I'm not sure either.. I rarely do an upgrade to the newest version, I usually do a clean install and haven't seen any issues.
Hello Steve,
I was hesitated of taking the BIG decision for upgrading my MacBook Pro (15, mid-2012, i7 2.6 GHz, 16 RAM, Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB). So I was thinking why not searching for other users' experiences regarding running macOS Catalina on an older MacBook Pros, and I found my self her watching this short and helpful video.
(Liked) your short answer of that question, with an helpful tip about Mojave.
Thank you so much Steve, I made my decision!

That’s great, I’m really glad the video helped!
I am talking now from Catalina. Unfortunately, I have a bad news here!
I DON'T RECOMMEND TO THOSE WHO HAVE MBP MID-2012 TO UPGRADE THEIR DEVICE TO THIS macOS!!*
WHY?, because I have now an issue.

Is the update still running pretty good on the 2012 MacBook Pro? I’m thinking about purchasing a used 2012 MacBook Pro for video editing!
Yeah... this few days I’m also searching for MacBook Pro 2012 for video editing. But not sure the latest update for quick time player and not sure how many years it’s will be last?
Angie Soon i have macbook pro mid 2012 upgraded 8 gb ram and 500 gb ssd, this mac is fast, but for video editing performance is not good, even if you just making cinematic video with simple effects is not smooth. espefially if you’re using Adobe Premiere, the playback is lagging even in the lowest playback resolution. my advice if you buy this mac, dont use adobe, use Final Cut Pro instead, because I feel that it run smoother than using Adobe Premiere. sorry if there’s mistake, english is not my main language✌🏻
