    I know that the 2012 MacBook Pro natively supports Catalina and you can update without patcher tool. I used it because it’s easy and it will allow people with older Macs to install Catalina. Thanks for watching!

      Lee Zavitz I was wondering why you choose this route. Thank you for explaining.

    • @ineshpatel
      @ineshpatel 4 года назад +1

      Lee Zavitz Thanks dude! I followed your brilliant original video and upgraded my 15" MBP (Mid 2012) with 16Gb RAM and two 512Gb SSDs in Raid0. It's been running great since then but I hit the OS roadblock when High Sierra came out, so been stuck at OS Sierra 10.12 sadly.
      I'm also a sound engineer and run recording and mixing sessions off my laptop so I want to keep it in Raid0 to be as fast as possible. Sounds like Catalina on Raid0 isn't gonna be that reliable but would Mojave run on Raid0 without issues, using the same process as you've shown here?
      What Chunk Size would you recommend if my MBP is used for music production and mixing?
      Also, in a Black Magic speed test, my Raid0 write speed had dropped from around 800Mb/s to less than 400Mb/s (even less after the test has run a few times [50Mb/s]) although the Read speed stays around 900Mb/s. I've now enables Trim Support but it hasn't really helped the performance in the tests. Does this need to be done when the Raid0 is first set up to be effective? Are the speeds likely to return to normal if I reformat the drives, install Mojave and enable Trim support from the start, or have the SSDs been irreversible degraded by running without Trim Support for a few years?
      Thanks for your great guidance on this stuff man, I'd really appreciate your, or anyone else's, help if you've got any insights! :)

    • @WarriorsPhoto
      @WarriorsPhoto 4 года назад +4

      Inesh Patel There’s apps like “DiskDrill” that can be used to see how degraded the drives are. If they’ve been used for over 5 years and are consistently written too. That could be a cause for concern.
      Good luck.

    Actually found this 2012 Macbook Pro i'm writing on a dumpster in the back of a student housing complex where i used to rent. Was throwing away my trash when I saw it under a stack of cereal boxes, and snuck it out during nighttime. Battery worked and all but had a flashing greyed-out folder icon in it. I booted it up, found your last video and did some work in it. That was three years ago and I have to say its still the best investment i every had. If you're a poor college kid living off rich kid's junk I suggest loosen up your ego and go dumpster diving for once...😂 😂😂

      I found a mid 2012 Core i5 model at the local recycle drop off in the e-waste bin with the charger in B+ grade condition with the DVD drive, and once I upgraded the RAM to 8GB of 133Mhz DDR3(sees it as 1600Mhz) Catalina is running fine on the 500GB HDD, so if you are not running Raid, or need some older programs then it's fine on mine for a basic couch web surfer, but I will have to replace the battery, and upgrade to an SSD soon, but no big deal.

    Depends on what you want it for. Video editing and gaming maybe not, but most of us need a bit of word processing, browsing and internet. I'm typing this on my trusty early 2011 13" I7 MBP. As a software engineer/sysadmin a lot of what I do is terminal and browser based, with a little local document writing and the odd bit of docker and virtualbox. I've upgraded to 16Gb ram (to cope with VMs) and swapped to a 512Gb SSD and yes it gets warm from time to time and the battery is past it's best, (and the charger is a little temperamental) but every time I look at buying a new one, I ask myself, what does my ancient Macbook Pro no longer do that I need it to? I'm forced to say - nothing, so I close the apple web page and keep my $3000 for another day.

      The lack of USB 3 on the 2011 machines is a deal breaker for me. I love my 2012 MBP 15", as it still has a bluray drive and USB 3.0. I wouldn't suggest upgrading to a super expensive new machine, but I refuse to daily drive a USB 2 computer since I use USB transfers often and it would be insanely slow and irritating . Luckily a 2012 machine is CHEAP online. ~150 or so

    Ok, so I have a 2010 macbook pro. I am so tired of the slow processor on this. I got a geekbench score of 617 which is honestly so bad, so I am upgrading the logic board to a 2012 macbook pro one. Everyone says its impossible (with some saying they did it), and after researching its actually not that expensive to complete. For $240 you can get the supplies you need to get it done, but its just a few extra steps.
    Update: I completed the upgrade with 0 issues. I ended up only needing $100 for parts. So worth it!!!

      @@TimPetersonMusic Hi, I installed one 1Tb SSD, I believe it was a Samsung. I ungraded the RAM with Crucial replacements. The performance is brilliant, virtually instant start up and shut down. I use it almost exclusively for Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop without any issue although i now store all of my images on external drives. I didn’t have any prior experience of computer work beforehand. However i did research everything in detail before starting. I also made sure i had plenty of time for setting up the operating system and transferring the data. The hardware changes were fast and easy. The software and operating system took several hours. Hi there! I just wonder is it possible to make a clone of RAID 0 APFS? As you know APFS has two partitions SSD and SSD data. I tryed but it makes the clone of just one partition. And you can't recover your system from it.

    After getting the OS downloaded, did you have any issues when the system wanted to download any upgrades? I did exactly the same thing as you did in your vid. Thank you, by the way. Except, I have two 500ssd. And my MBP is wicked fast :) But, for some reason it’s taking forever to download a simple security update. Is that because of the RAIDed SSD’s? Will I continue to have this issue every time it needs to download updates?

    My only question is about the "Trim". Can I use the same command to achieve "Trim" for the SSD when running Mojave? And do I do it 2 times, once for each drive? (Non Raid setup) Thanks!

Only problem is the battery is still the original and it will randomly reset the laptop. I dont think I'll ever run out of space! I tried doing raid 0 with Mojave OS but it wouldnt allow me too, any advice is much appreciated.

    yo man thanks for these vids, super helpful and i'm inspired to do this, but would you only recommend doing the combined hard drives? why not just put a 1 tb hard drive instead of adding the caddy and two hard drives? i'm not all that tech savvy but I'm looking to do this to my 2012 so i dont have to splash a g for a new macbook, and it seems simpler to just replace the hard drive with a terra rather than having a combined drive only adding up to 500 gb.

      Do whatever you want, I only showed how to add two drives because you get double the speed. The problem is raid0 doesn’t work well in Catalina but it’s amazing in high Sierra. Might as well just put one drive in to make things easy even though it won’t be as fast. Less headache

It has been so good, that i want to update it to use Lightroom and Photoshop on. If i just replace the hard drive with a single 1Tb Samsung SSD, will i still need to follow the latest advice you’ve given in this video? I want to run Catalina, but am beginning to think this may now be beyond my capability. (While the machine is open I’d be looking to change the battery and upgrade the RAM to 16Gb too). Thanks for your time and the great video’s 👍

I'm thinking of adding at least another 1 if not 2Tb if I can to this laptop as it seems like a better option than trying to find a external drive with firewire. How does it work for data transfer from the optical drive mount? I'm running VST instrument libraries in Reaper DAW so need as fast speed as I can get. Also, can you put 2Tb drives in these mounts?

    Hi, I upgraded my Macbook mid-2012 to from 8gb to16gb memory & 250 gb HD to 1TB Samsung SSD drive a few years back after I saw your original video and it worked great for which I thank you @Lee Zavitz. I have since upgraded to Mojave and have no intention of upgrading to Catilina, however, I would like to add the Second Samsung 1Tb SSD using a Hard Drive Caddy so I would effectively have a 2Tb Raid0 drive. As I was saying I don't want to install Catilina and I don't want to have to install Mojave from scratch as I would either lose (as some apps/plugins would not be compatible with Catilina) or have to reinstall hundreds of apps/plugins again.
    My questions are:
    1.) Is it possible, would the mac support it?
    2.) Would it be worth it ...adding a second 1Tb Drive so I end up with 2Tb SSD Raid0 drive, much like your original video with the 2 x 250gb just bigger?
    3.) How would I go about it, would I just clone my current drive to an external drive, add the second 1Tb internal drive using the caddy, raid the 2 drives like in your original video then fresh install Mojave to it, and then finally clone my current drive again back onto my new 2TB SSD Raid0 Drive?
    Sorry, it's a lot to digest, its just I'm about to buy it today and want double-check with you @Lee Zavitz as well as all the guys watching this please, any and all advice is much appreciated ;-)

    These two videos have been very helpful. I’m not quite understanding why to even do RAID in the first place? I’m new to this; I see that there are 2.5 inch drives that are 500, 750, 1TB, 2TB, etc. Why not just install a single SSD? And would that allow for Catalina to run smooth? Thanks!

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  4 года назад +1

      Well, when raid0 was supported properly in MacOS it gives you double the bandwidth and speed because it’s spread across 2 drives. I show at the end of the first video the benchmarks and how much faster it is. The problem is they stopped supporting it. So it makes more sense to not raid0 anymore.
