Appreciate you taking the time to show these steps 🙏🏼. I do have one question though; after the installation of the OS, is that when you can restore the Time Machine backup? So, in preparation, I assume that you need to create a bootable OS drive as well as a Time Machine backup onto a separate USB or external drive, correct? Also, will the Time Machine restore put all the files and such back to where it was on the original drive? Or will I have to also re-index everything on the new SSD?
I just used your video to inspire me to fix my MacBook Pro. I was tempted to bin it because it was so slow, but using your video I've upgraded from 4GB ram to 16GB and installed the SSD and it's flying! Thank you!
Excellent video! This was a HUGE help in upgrading my wife's MacBook Pro and wow what a difference it made. The only differences is that I opted for a 1TB drive (my wife doesn't delete anything) and maxed out the ram to 16. Thank you so much for this video.
Thank you! You were very detailed and explained the whys very well. I LOVE my 13-inch mid-2012 MBP for many reasons that people have mentioned, but since I still drop cds into my 2003 Subaru Forester, I really still use it for the Super-drive. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB a while ago, but never considered swapping a SSD drive for the original drive. After watching intently for the whole 23 minutes and 16 seconds (with pausing at some points), I will look for a SSD drive and thanks to you, will do the swap. My only concern is going into Terminal, as I was led to believe it can cause problems if you don't know what you are doing... So I will re-watch (and pause quite often) to follow your instructions with attention to detail. Again, thank you and blue skies!!!
I just received my 2012 MacBook Pro. Gonna work with it for a little while and see do I need to upgrade it but. So far I’m very happy with it! Great video!
Thanks very much for doing this video , I loaded Catalina on to a Samsung ssd I went into terminal to turn on trim I get to the point we’re it ask for my password but it is locked , how do I remove unlock the password to carry on installing trim manythanks paul
Fantastic video! I just ordered a 1TB Samsung SSD and a 16GB memory upgrade for my trusty Mid-2012 Macbook Pro, going with the Time Machine restore method. I'm stuck on High Sierra for the moment due to some old app dependencies (Logic 9 Pro), but I still expect the old box to be a speed demon after the upgrade. Thanks!
Thanks for watching! These mid-2012 MacBooks are definitely worth the effort to upgrade and save from redundancy. The increase in performance with your new RAM and SSD is sure to make you smile 😁
Howbis your computer brunni g now I have a mid 2012 also and I'm about to buy 16 GB ram 1st then with more money I'm gonna order my SSD how is your computer running now 😇
I maxed out my 2012 MBP with dual SSDs and 16GB RAM. The boot disk is 500GB SSD and DVD caddy is 1TB SSD. Battery life actually improved to 8 hours instead of the usual 5-6 hours.
Good video. I have run a macbook pro 9,1 since 2015 and started having random shutdown issues. Didn't know if it was the logic board or what but as a last option, i replaced my Samsung 850Evo 500 GB with a new ssd drive and did a fresh install of Catalina. It does seem to have fixed the issue, and thanks to your video I remembered to enable the trim support.
I've looked at many videos that replace the HD from standard to SSD. I never saw them talk about Trim. I swapped my HD a couple of years ago. I just checked to see if Trim was on and it wasn't. Is it too late for me to enable it? Will it mess anything up?
As far as I'm aware you should be able to just turn it on with no ill effects, but I'd definitely recommend doing a time machine backup if you have a spare external hard drive beforehand for peace of mind! Two years without trim active may have put some extra wear on the SSD, so it'd be a good idea in general to keep regular backups just in case you do encounter a drive failure somewhere down the line 💻 Best of luck!
@@rayrain5505 I was about to ask the same question, as I just bought a 2012 MBP that the previous owner upgraded, and having just checked, I see that they didn't enable Trim, so I'm interested to hear how activating it works out for you.
@@JustAddSeasoning I've upgraded a few 2012's now and watched numerous videos on the process. Your video is the first time I've heard about Trim. Thanks for sharing this tip. I did it with no problems. And I can't agree more, upgrading these jewels really keeps them going for many more years to come. The other thing I've done is replace the optical drive with a hard drive caddy and reinstalled the original HDD as a second storage drive. The caddy is only around $12 on Amazon. However getting to one of those pesky screws in the top corner is a bit cumbersome, but in the end it's worth it.
Nice video bro! I have Macbook Air early 2015. I'm going to upgrade the SSD as well. Your video pretty much help even though it's a different Mac. So should I enable the "trim" also if I upgrade my SSD? Thanks
Thanks! I don’t think you’ll need to manually enable Trim on a MacBook Air because they come out of the factory with SSDs as standard and with Trim enabled by default
I agree with original Os it's super fast instead of age 😄 I wonder my mod for Windows folders can do for that but display/keyboard is 💀 So I stop using after screen was gone.
Nice video. Changed the hdd in my old pavilion dm1 to a ssd and it’s scary how well it’s running. I’m getting another laptop soon and cause I want a disc drive the MacBook 2012 seems to get the best reviews so when I pick one up I’ll use your vid to upgrade the ssd. Any tips on what to look for when picking up a 2012 model?
Thanks very much, I couldn't agree more with the difference in speed between HDD and SSD! I'd say the main things to look out for are the battery cycle count (either buy something with a really high count for a really low price and factor in the price of a replacement or get something that has been well looked after, with a pretty low count) and don't get tempted by the Mid-2012 or Late-2012 Retina MacBook Pros when you're searching, because there's not as many user-serviceable parts in the Retinas.. I tend to find that reading the Mid-2012 MBP Tech Specs on Wikipedia always help me decide which used tech to buy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro#Technical_specifications_2

Just Add Seasoning I really wish I had the equipment and the gumption to attempt a CPU upgrade on my ‘09 logic board. It’s painful to know that I have so much much more computing power in my iPhone. But I do love these old unibody MacBooks. If I manage to accomplish anything noteworthy I’ll send the before and after’s to you. Do enjoy the weather there for me. I miss Bristol terribly. Ta
That would be impressive! I looked into reapplying the thermal paste on the processor for this MacBook, because there was a faint burning smell before the hard drive upgrade. Fortunately, clearing the dust out of the easier to reach internals cured the burning smell without having to do any serious surgery with the logic board. It would be interesting to see your results if you do give it a go though The weather here has turned very Autumnal in the last couple of days!

Hey! Amazing video guide and has genuinely made me feel like I can attempt upgrading the RAM and SSD. However, I have fallen at the first hurdle. It seems that Apple no longer allow you to download the full installer as you show at the beginning of your video (1.29) - it allows you to download a file around 13mb that then forces you to run the installation on the mac you have downloaded it on. When trying to set up the external hard drive, the command "Install macOS Catalina.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application" appears after typing your password and hitting enter. I don't suppose you have any advice or tips at all, do you? Thank you!!
I brought a used mint condition MacBook Pro Mid 2012 MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 with 16GB Ram 500 GB Solid State Sata Drive with a 2.9 GHz Dual-Core intel Core i7 Processor. My question to you is do you think that I should replace the current hard drive with a new internal 1 or 2 TB SSD? Cause I brought the Samsung T7 1TB external drive but I didn’t hook it up yet so I wanted to get your opinion first if i really need to replace the internal 500GB Sata State Drive? Also have you tested a webcam on your MacBook Pro? If so what name & model? Cause I was thinking about getting the AVerMedia PW313 which supports 1080 HD 30fps Video Resolution 1920 X1080 or the PW315 which is the same except the PW315 is 60fps because I want to put the web camera on Top of my silver HP 22er Monitor. I hope to hear from you. Marc Pennsylvania U.S.
Hi, can I skip the External Boot Drive part and just install Mac OS on a fresh SSD? I've done some research and a lot of sources say that APFS is better for SSD so I won't be able to use my Time Machine with Mac OS Extended format either. Thank you.
Absolutely! There's two ways to go about that... You could get a USB A to SATA cable and install MacOS directly onto your new SSD, rather than an external hard drive. Otherwise I believe you can do an Internet install when you've put your blank Internal SSD in, but I think this takes quite a long time, because you will have to wait for MacOS to be downloaded from the internet and then wait for it to be installed. Good luck!
Your option is not the fastest. Since the SSD drive is much slower than the M2 drive. Even if you put a M2 disk in this computer, it still won't work at maximum speed (although it will be much faster than your option). But, if you still change the program code in the BIOS chip (thereby unlocking the PCIe port to which the M2 disk is connected), we will get almost 2 times more speed. And so what are we going to have? In the SSD drive version, the speed is up to 600, but when the M2 drive is connected, the speed is 1500-1800. If you unlock PCIe, then we get a speed of about 3000. And it will already be 5 times faster than the simple option of installing the fastest SSD drive) So you can still increase the speed by 5 times!)))
Catalina has no more support for Office Apps even the usually built in “free apps” Mac Office apps is not supported anymore, this Mac Model 2012 will only be good for web browsing and some remaining supported apps, if you only have the budget for just one computer that you may be using for some work apps that you may be bringing home this 2012 model will have no use, my suggestion is to go to a way much more higher models that still has support for some really basic apps like Office, just sayingk
