I purchased this from Craigslist recently for $120. I updated the RAM to 16GB, added a 256GB SSD & updated the OS to Ventura using the Open Core Legacy Patcher. The port selection is also a bonus. I should have updated the battery. Overall, it's a good backup laptop for what I need.

Should always increase Ram when found an SSD. The swap memory will kill an SSD early.

Your option is not the fastest. Since the SSD drive is much slower than the M2 drive. Even if you put a M2 disk in this computer, it still won't work at maximum speed (although it will be much faster than your option). But, if you still change the program code in the BIOS chip (thereby unlocking the PCIe port to which the M2 disk is connected), we will get almost 2 times more speed. And so what are we going to have? In the SSD drive version, the speed is up to 600, but when the M2 drive is connected, the speed is 1500-1800. If you unlock PCIe, then we get a speed of about 3000. And it will already be 5 times faster than the simple option of installing the fastest SSD drive) So you can still increase the speed by 5 times!)))

Catalina has no more support for Office Apps even the usually built in “free apps” Mac Office apps is not supported anymore, this Mac Model 2012 will only be good for web browsing and some remaining supported apps, if you only have the budget for just one computer that you may be using for some work apps that you may be bringing home this 2012 model will have no use, my suggestion is to go to a way much more higher models that still has support for some really basic apps like Office, just sayingk

I maxed out my 2012 MBP with dual SSDs and 16GB RAM. The boot disk is 500GB SSD and DVD caddy is 1TB SSD. Battery life actually improved to 8 hours instead of the usual 5-6 hours.

I agree with original Os it's super fast instead of age 😄 I wonder my mod for Windows folders can do for that but display/keyboard is 💀 So I stop using after screen was gone.

I LOVE my 13-inch mid-2012 MBP for many reasons that people have mentioned, but since I still drop cds into my 2003 Subaru Forester, I really still use it for the Super-drive. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB a while ago, but never considered swapping a SSD drive for the original drive. After watching intently for the whole 23 minutes and 16 seconds (with pausing at some points), I will look for a SSD drive and thanks to you, will do the swap. My only concern is going into Terminal, as I was led to believe it can cause problems if you don't know what you are doing... So I will re-watch (and pause quite often) to follow your instructions with attention to detail. Again, thank you and blue skies!!!

I brought a used mint condition MacBook Pro Mid 2012 MacOS Catalina 10.15.7 with 16GB Ram 500 GB Solid State Sata Drive with a 2.9 GHz Dual-Core intel Core i7 Processor. My question to you is do you think that I should replace the current hard drive with a new internal 1 or 2 TB SSD? Cause I brought the Samsung T7 1TB external drive but I didn’t hook it up yet so I wanted to get your opinion first if i really need to replace the internal 500GB Sata State Drive? Also have you tested a webcam on your MacBook Pro? If so what name & model? Cause I was thinking about getting the AVerMedia PW313 which supports 1080 HD 30fps Video Resolution 1920 X1080 or the PW315 which is the same except the PW315 is 60fps because I want to put the web camera on Top of my silver HP 22er Monitor. Hate to be a downer, but a SATA SSD is far from being the "world's fastest SSD." Here I was thinking you were gonna mod an NVMe onto it or something.

Hey! Amazing video guide and has genuinely made me feel like I can attempt upgrading the RAM and SSD. However, I have fallen at the first hurdle. It seems that Apple no longer allow you to download the full installer as you show at the beginning of your video (1.29) - it allows you to download a file around 13mb that then forces you to run the installation on the mac you have downloaded it on. When trying to set up the external hard drive, the command "Install macOS Catalina.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application" appears after typing your password and hitting enter. I don't suppose you have any advice or tips at all, do you? Thank you!!

Good video. I have run a macbook pro 9,1 since 2015 and started having random shutdown issues. Didn't know if it was the logic board or what but as a last option, i replaced my Samsung 850Evo 500 GB with a new ssd drive and did a fresh install of Catalina. It does seem to have fixed the issue, and thanks to your video I remembered to enable the trim support.
