I've owned my mid 2012 MBP from new, and I've practically used it every single day for the last 8 years. Bought it for $1200, which seemed like a lot back then compared to other options). It turned out to be a great investment. I still use it for work on a daily basis for 8 plus hours per day. Upgraded to a Samsung 500BG SSD about 3 years ago and also upgraded RAM to 16GB. Running latest version of Sierra now and it still runs like a champ. boots in 45 seconds and ready to go. Considering updating to Catalina, but don't want to push my luck with how well its running.
The worst thing about the mid-2012 MBP 13" is the 1280x800 resolution. It's the only thing you can't improve. With 16GB of RAM, graphics performance is decent in Lightroom and Final Cut (considering the year this laptop was launched). Planning to upgrade early next year to the current MacBook Pro 13".
I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro and used the dos dude patch to install Catalina. I have fitted a SSD and increased the RAM to 8GB. Really pleased with my old MacBook Pro
SSD’s are so cheap these days you can replace that 500gig HDD with the same size SSD for less than $100 and it makes the world of difference. I don’t know how I ever put up with the original HDD. I have a 2008 MacBook that I put a SSD in and it runs faster than my 2012 ever did on a standard HDD
I have a 2012 MacBOok Pro - slightly higher spec, the 2.9 GHz Core i7 version - that I've upgraded to 16GB of memory, a 500GB SSD and a 1 TB HDD in a caddy. It's running fine with a couple hundred Chrome tabs open, several Visual Studio Code windows open, both Firefox and Safari running a few tabs each, and some other stuff. I like that it's the last version that can be completely disassembled and anything replaced. What I don't know is whether there's a significant enough boost to go to a 2013 or later model. Because of the DisplayGate problem I know there's a couple model years to avoid, as well as avoiding the models with the butterfly keyboard. Meaning I think 2014 is the last suitable model year.
go for a late 2013 MacBook pro with 2gb dedicated graphics (GT 750M), it's cheaper than a 2014 with basically the same specs that's what i just got for myself, and i will be installing Catalina these next days after i see some returns, other than that how is going with web development?
Jason G Hi Jason.. how is Catalina working on your machine? I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro and thought about upgrading to 2013 because of your recommendation. 2014 model seems to have about the same specs, as you said and with the 2015 model the butterfly keys got introduced, which I definitely want to abstain from. Thx for your response in advance. 😊
It is 2023, and I have a MBP 13” mid 2012 I bought from eBay a few months ago for about $250, It had 8gb Ram and a 1tb SSD. It is running a Plex server now. That is all I am going to use it for, and I didn’t install any other apps. It is doing fine with one stream of 1080p content, off USB 3 hard disks, I didn’t push it past that.
Mac has always been infamous for selling their computers with the bare minimum RAM to run. I'd always told my clients that I would upgrade the RAM of their new machine. Now that it's soldered onto the board, I tell them to get the maximum RAM they can afford.
Installed with dosdude1 patcher on my 2011, 13inch MacBook PRO, 250 Crucial SSD and 8GB of RAM. Still a very servicible machine that boots in 30 seconds.

Sidecar doesn't work with my mid-2015 MBP, at the highest possible custom specs. Still not enough motivation to upgrade until they raise the keyboard, bring back at least 1 usb port, glowing logo, etc.
I agree. Especially if Apple is making products geared towards development and business (Macs). These people need; HDMI, and USB for presentations and possibly plugging in a mouse or thumb drive. Apple fucked up in 2016 when they moved to pure Type C. Living with dongles is bullshit and Apple knows it. This is their way of ripping off the consumer and that includes their ridiculous price tags for under specced products.
2012 mbp can actually support 16GB of ram, though apple only “officially” supports 8gb. I purchased a 16GB kit for my 2012 13” MBP and a 500GB SSD for about $110 total a few months ago and it runs like a modern machine on Catalina
Wife is still rocking her late 2009 white unibody. Updated with SSD, more RAM and a fresh battery - it still does everything she needs from it (she uses an iPad Air 2 a lot as well).
@i Phone I don't know about Mojave. I jumped from High Sierra.I don't give assurance on extra battery backup. but it won't drain the battery unless some thread or program run continuously eating battery and cpu, which you can find and solve by going through internet. and first update also released so any issues with OS would have solved by now. performance will be same. and dark mode surely better for eyes. In my case I didn't face any problem while updating or post updating. I surely recommend it. prefer clean install because junk data slow your mac.
AlphaMax Catalina is only supported on that Mac Mini because Apple knows the user can easily upgrade to an SSD(and for almost no money). A modest amount of money and 15 minutes to swap out the HDD and increase RAM makes the system operate similarly to new ones. You own a the most basic Mac possible, and are clearly interested in gaming more than anything else(something Macs are just not built for). I’m not sure if you building a gaming PC is wise if you can’t handle resurrecting a Mac Mini.
Good video - I have that model macBook. An SSD upgrade is super easy, plus, for a few bucks more, a caddy can be purchased to replace the optical drive with a second SSD. Slap in 16GB of RAM and it becomes a very capable mac, let down primarily by the screen resolution. My 2012 macBook is running catalina just fine, but it's primary usage is casual browsing, music etc. - I got it second hand with the mechanical drive. It was unusable in that state, even with Sierra.
Hello guys! Im a student who is looking for a cheap mbp for simple stuff such as internet browsing, youtube, netflix, word, power point and excel. Other than that i need a laptop that is capable of some lite 1080p editing and rendering. Would you recommend the 2012 upgradable mbp? I really dont care about the non retina screen and software updates, i just need something thats going to be reliable with programs i mentined above. Also, if buying it, i definitely plan on upgrading ram to at least 8 gigs ans getting an ssd
Hmmm... word and excel runs well on that macbook pro, and even on the air models of that generation. The screen is a bit low res though, so netflix and youtube aren't a great experience. It will also do light 1080p video editing well too, depending on what config you get. I think you'd be better served with something a touch more new. What's your budget.
Ishan Ghimire Hey thanks for the reply 🙏🏼 My budget is around 300€. But since i live im Serbia you can only get a 2013 air or a 2012 pro for that money (i5 model)

Been following all of your great videos, and i just did some upgrades to a Mac Mini 2012 purchased for $250. It's gonna be a nice desktop addition for me. However, my mistake was to upgrade to this new OS. It rendered my existing Microsoft Office programs unable to run, but they were serving my needs. Got to figure out how to get back to the High Sierra OS!
I like what you said about HDD. Those are only good for storage of media in my eyes. Also, the minimum spec'd machines will probably stop being supported. Companies got get us consumers to upgrade one way or another.
Talk about forced obsole$cence. Catalina drops support of 32bit programs, giving the excuse better use of resources. Yet Microsoft Windows 10 can run the equivalent 32bit programs, and older programs under XP Compatibility Mode. And Windows 10 can run Macs not good enough for Catalina or Mojave. Apple - buy our newer stuff only. Mojave - release 2018 Hardware Requirements: MacBook Early 2015 or newer - 3 year old machine iMac Pro 2017 - 1 year old machine Not that Windows is better, but it illustrates that Apple is only giving lip service in pursuit of profit. On the sad side, with Microsoft again pushing hardware, expect them to copy Apple. $$$
@@Salvage1 Apple gave app developers over 2 years to update their software to 64 bit. If they didn't that is on them. We have had 64 bit since the Power Mac G5 days so just when should we drop support for 32 bit then?
I have to agree with the annoyance about apple forcing 32bit app support out the door - windows will continue to support 32bit for a good few years to come, so it shows apple doesn't have to do it. That and the removal over other things like native raid support means ill be sticking with el capitan for the forseeable
@@ThePaulcarter35 Then continue to use Mojave. Apple isn't forcing you to use Catalina. If apple did it next year you would complain then and if they waited 2 years you would complain then. Can't please everyone. Time for 32 bit apps to die or get updated.
When it comes to support of this laptop in the future, i'll say that apple were selling mid-2012 MBP up to 2016. And also when it comes to raw cpu power it outperforms newer MBAirs. That makes me think that it'll be supported for a few more years/versions.
If it does get “cut off”, check out dosdude1. He’s a lifesaver. Apple’s minimum system requirements are more marketing than reality. They cut Macs off from updates for the sole purpose of getting you to buy a new Mac, not because your computer literally can’t run the latest macOS.
@@jscorpio1987 I agree with you. I've seen plenty of Apple computers that could run the latest versions of Mac OS but they can't via the basic install. dosdude1, is one of my heroes. (:
I love how these “upgrades” always manage to make some of my paid software non-functional! Legacy software support totally sucks on a Mac. This is one area where Windows 10 totally destroys MacOS.
Bobby Brady And there lies the problem. The software developers won’t update their programs for the latest Mac update, but will offer you their latest version for a price. Very common on Macs. Windows, however, has pretty good support for legacy software and hardware.

I’ve been running Catalina for the last couple months on my 2012 MacBook Pro. Initially it had 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD, and it ran well enough to do basic tasks like web browsing. Upgrading to 16GB of RAM and a 500GB SSD (roughly $150 from OWC) made a significant improvement. It boots fast, most tasks are fairly fast, and does fine with Xcode, VS Code and Android Studio which can be fairly CPU intensive at times. I keep it on my desk half the time connected to a 4K monitor, and that does not appear to effect performance. The only reason I have to upgrade is the low res screen. My previous MacBook Pro had a Retina display (and was stolen), and I like having more screen real estate.
I have a 2012 Mac mini that I boot from an external 500GB SSD attached via USB3 (yes you can do that) and I can attest that there is a night and day performance difference between thw internal 5400 rpm 2.5 inch drive and the external SSD. Even over USB3, the SSD makes the 2012 mini feel pretty snappy, like something shipped in the last couple years. I've also maxed out the internal memory to 16GB, which helps a lot. I'm running Mojave now, but I'm pretty sure Catalina would have no problem. As Luke says, booting off the internal HD can take up to 15 minutes before the system is really usable. But with the SSD, it's generally well under 30 seconds (often less) before everything's ready to go. I tried to install the SSD internally inside the mini, but Apple's design makes it too complicated and prone to damaging the computer, so I'm happy running the external boot drive. And the internal connection is only SATA-II, so I don't think there's any great performance advantage going the internal route. The remaining bottleneck is the graphics (Intel HD4000 -- no gaming on this platform!) and the 3rd generation Intel Core i5 (2 Cores, 4 Threads), which can get bogged down if you're doing video conversions, but otherwise a solid processor for general tasks. The SSD + cheap external USB3 enclosure makes a 2012 mini good for another several years to come.

It's a shame that the system requirements for macOS are so ridiculously high. I've got the current build of Windows 10 running on a 13 year old laptop (yes, from 2006) with a Core Duo processor (not even Core 2 Duo) just 3GB of RAM and a hard drive. It runs quite fast. Sure, that's an extreme example, but as I said, Windows 10 run really well on it. Not only that, but the current build of Windows 10, runs faster than previous builds and on some older computers on which Windows 10 was unusable on, due to it running slowly, it now runs fine. My main laptop is from 2011, with a second gen Core i5 and it's more than fast enough for what I use it for. If I wanted to, I could no doubt use this computer for years to come and it would still be able to run the newest builds of Windows 10 when they are released, with no issues.
@@funnycrow4462 Some examples are a Toshiba Qosmio G30 and Portege M400, a Compal HEL80 , Dell Vostro 1000 and Lenovo ThinkPad x61s, three of which were released in 2006 and the other two in 2007. Windows 10 runs really well on them. Even Edge is really fast. I used them as examples, as they are my oldest laptops. To speed up the visuals, I go to Performance Options and select "Adjust for best performance." I then renable "Smooth edges of screen fonts" and "Show window contents when dragging." I've owned my mid 2012 MBP from new, and I've practically used it every single day for the last 8 years.

Mi chel 2016 model year MBP introduced butterfly keyboards, not 2015 MBP.

Hari Kishore My mac mini is slow as crap after installing catalina. Im glad I am building my new gaming pc this year I am done with macs.
@i Phone No. Actually I get same, if not bit better backup, may be because of dark mode.

Companies got get us consumers to upgrade one way or another.

macOS Catalina is the first OS i have not installed on release since Leopard, going to wait until next year...
Mojave - release 2018
Hardware Requirements:
MacBook Early 2015 or newer - 3 year old machine
iMac Pro 2017 - 1 year old machine
Not that Windows is better, but it illustrates that Apple is only giving lip service in pursuit of profit.
2006 Macs with Core Duo CPUs are 32 bit. Core2 Duo and up are 64 bit

Good rebuttal, I hope you are correct.
If it does get “cut off”, check out dosdude1. He’s a lifesaver. Apple’s minimum system requirements are more marketing than reality. They cut Macs off from updates for the sole purpose of getting you to buy a new Mac, not because your computer literally can’t run the latest macOS.

Thanks. As someone who uses mostly newer iPad and older MBA, very informative. That was a fantastic no nonsense review.

So if for me, a power user, is more than enough, then for a standard user it's gonna be way more than enough. Love Mac!
my old 2010 pro with ssd is as fast with my air 2019. both with catalina.
pbatacan how did you install Catalina on your 2010 MacBook Pro?
Yupo Pout with patcher ,watch tutorials dude
Still running my 2012 Macbook Pro non retina. Last year my Hard Drive went out so I had to replace it with a SSD and I upgraded the ram as well now I'm running 10 GB of RAM with a 256 GB SSD. My Mac still runs like a champ.
This was truly informative, Thank You. I would never try to teach an ancient dog new tricks even if you paid me. However, if that dog is as exceptional and spry as a 7yr old Mac product, I may be tempted, slightly🤫.
Thank Goodness my ’15 MacBook Pro is nowhere near middle-aged as far as OS 10.15 is concerned. As of this moment, she’s purring away😉.
Please, I have macbook pro retina late 2013, only 4gb of Ram? Can I run flawlessy Catalina?
Catalina has too many bugs I went back to Mojave and my Mac is smooth stay away from catalina beta
It's the beta ofc it's gonna be unstable
I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2012, non retina 13 inch, core i5, 16GB RAM, 240GB SSD)
and it runs very good for what I need
minimum requirements you mean on "The Macbook", right?
lol
Nice video Luke!
Who needs Apple support if you have a brain? LOL
can you do similar video for MacBook Pro 2014? A complete wipeout, format, but on Catalina fresh install...
without all the junk files, previously accumulated apps
I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with 8gb of ram and SSD, is it worth upgrading from Mojave to Catalina?
Eh, my mid-2009 Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro runs Catalina pretty fine. Works pretty good for web browsing, light video editing and content consumption.
hi,i have a mid 2009 too,
now the patcher installs the golden master version or still a beta?
I patched a 2010 Mac Mini with dosdude1's Catalina patch. The system all ready had an SSD and 8GB's of RAM installed. After going through the patch process, the 2010 Mac Mini ran just fine. Of course, it will not be a screaming video editing machine, but for normal typical tasks; I had absolutely no issues. Did the same with a 2011 MacBook Pro 13" that was running High Sierra. It also had an SSD and 8GB's of RAM onboard. As a matter of fact; the MacBook Pro seemed to be a bit snapper after the upgrade to Catalina, IMHO.
Dang. The only MBP with a good keyboard that might be supported 4 years from now is the 2015. I REALLY hope the new 16" MBP has a good keyboard. I own a 2018 MBP and I honestly just don't use it because the typing experience sucks.
Only 8 gigs? Why not max out to 16 gigs of ram?
Runs really well on my mid 2010 macbook pro core 2 duo with ssd and 8 gigs ram. Use the dosdude1 patch.
Luke what you talking about? I’m running Catalina on my 17” MacBook Pro 2.2ghz 16gig 7200 Rpm. My computer run like butter. I use it for Xcode, logic, Usenet
There is guy called dosdude1 he makes patches to the Mac installers it force runs the latest OS on unsupported Macintoshes
Installed on a Mid 2012 i5 4gb ram + SSD upgrade MBP. It works fine. Really fine for a 7yr laptop. With a 5400rpm hdd it is barely usable.
I'm gonna add a 16gb ram tomorrow but even with a 4gb it works fine.
Love this channel!
I have mid 2012 pro with 8gb RAM and SSD (upgraded quite some time ago when bought used SSD I don't even remember model of) and it runs Catalina quite fine. Some times it takes time, like after startup, but once its fully finished loading its quite good. I was wondering if I could update to faster SSD but when I checked read write speeds of it, it seems I bought white a good SSD back in those days.
Guys, need some suggestion. I have MacBook Pro Mid 2012 with 10 GB RAM (2+8), 250 GB SSD and 500 GB HDD. Everything is fine except for the battery life - it's about 2 - 2:30 hours on moderate use and is at 67% of its capacity. If anyone has done a battery replacement, can you suggest me a replacement battery to buy?
Hi luke, I updated my Macbook Pro 2012 yesterday, the only issue I'm having is that Apple Arcade games will not download, just giving me a "itunes cannot process purchases at this time " message. Any ideas?
I'm running El Capitan on a MacBook Pro 2012 with 10GB (yes, 10) RAM and a 480GB SSD. It's fast. I'm eager to upgrade the OS to Catalina. I'm concerned I'll be disappointed by a much slow performance. In the last minute of your excellent clip, you say "Go for it". My question to you is "will Catalina be slower than El Capitan given my machine's configuration?
