- Filming for this exclusive behind the scenes documentary began back in February - before it was revealed that the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat follows James Newman as he prepares to be unveiled as the UK’s Eurovision representative, filming him both in rehearsals and backstage at his first public performance of his Eurovision entry, accompanied by his brother, artist John Newman and their mum.
Following the cancellation of Eurovision, James shares what this means for him and he speaks to some of this year’s other contestants in other countries about their experiences and future plans. The documentary features commentary from artists who have worked with James, including Olly Murs, Mollie King and Piers from Rudimental.
Eurovision 2020 acts involved in this short film are: Arilena Ara, Athena Manoukian, Montaigne, Vincent Bueno, Efendi, VAL, Hooverphonic, Victoria, Damir Kedžo, Sandro, Benny Cristo, Ben & Tan, Uku Suviste, Aksel, Tom Leeb, Tornike Kipiani, Ben Dolic, Stefania, Daði og Gagnamagnið, Lesley Roy, Eden Alene, Diodato, Samanta Tīna, The Roop, Destiny, Natalia Gordienko, Vasil, Ulrikke, Alicja, Elisa, Roxen, Senhit, Hurricane, Ana Soklič, Blas Cantó, The Mamas, Gjon’s Tears, Jeangu Macrooy, Go_A and James Newman.

BBC actually treating Eurovision with respect? All it took was a pandemic???
@AB. B., Same, where, the begining is just praising their representor.
My heart is broken for all the artists that are stripped from the chance to participate. Really do wish all artists from 2020 would be automatically invited back for 2021.
AB. B. performing at Eurovision is a huge achievement and definitely a highlight in their careers. This quite literally can be the worst thing to happen to them.
@AB. B. what do you even do here
AB. B. There are way worse things that are happening to people out there, I wholeheartedly agree, but that doesn’t mean that this is not a valid reason to be upset. We should stop encouraging the mindset of “others have it worse”, because everyone’s problems and worries are just as important.
@AB. B. you are so hateful! Why do you even want to express that so called realism? Like seriously do you think you are achieving something with this? Eurovision is an important part of some people's life including mine and there is no need to let us feel bad about that.
@AB. B. you get over yourself. Such a pity that you spend your time trying to make others feel bad. Oh wait for you I don't think that's a pity. Have a nice day
This just showed, why I want everyone that were supposed to participate this year, to return next year.
Good or bad songs, doesn’t matter, let these people have their chance!
This was really heartbreaking to watch I hope James Newman comes back to Eurovision in 2021
Yep, I couldn’t help crying. I hope BBC honours James with the selection for next year and we all have our healing
I really hope so too, since James really deserves it. But choosing a song better than "My last breath" will be titanic, almost impossible
@@danieljano88 Disagree. The UK can do so much better. They got the second biggest music industry in the world after the US.
@@kennet7837 I hope the UK industry proves me wrong for next year and the years to come. They must just leaving behind the prejudice of Eurovision as a "career burner" for the UK artists. I want to see big names for UK in Eurovision in the future. Only by doing so, the UK will be one of my favourite ESC countries again.
He's been confirmed back for 2021! :D
Whoever cut this video, thanks for making me cry! 😭
I'm glad it's James this time. As he's already a respected songwriter I feel like the UK media have been much less spiteful than usual- so thanks for bringing in some more positivity dude
Šviesa I’m also happy that the selection was different
It’s always better when they write their own songs
Is it normal that I´m almost crying because of this video?
no
Canada calling
I am
I had it too and I am not even from UK
@@tabithadehaan8405 Yeah same I'm from Germany
Yeah, all I could think while watching the ending was just how much I love eurovision for all it represents and all that it actually is. And even though it's not happening this year it's nice to see the contestants united through the message of staying safe and loving music.
This is the exact content we fans love to see, although the contest has been cancelled. It has showed the entrants are all struggling and sad about this as much as the fans are. For the love of god, just confirm James for next year already! The lad clearly wants to do it and thats rare in big artists these days because of the UK general view about Eurovision being "a career killer". Just let him loose on every aspect of the song next year, he has talent.
I hope that all the class of 2020 comes back for 2021, that all the traditional NFs are cancelled and that they concentrate on new and better songs for them and that next year Eurovision comes back stronger and better than ever. All the talented artists of 2020 deserve their Eurovision!
They say that hindsight is a wonderful thing - but after watching this, I realise that hindsight can be a terrible thing as well.
I love how he is a little weird. Like you know the way is he is interacting with the camera and stuff. It makes him seem so relatable. Amazing
This is so touching and emotional - I'm in tears! What a nice guy - and so talented! Really hope he performs in 2021! Can't wait for the rest of the shows this week!
Thank you to this documentary for liberating the tears that were hiding inside my face.

Legitimately teared up at the end there
Thanks BBC. For once, I am incredibly impressed by your coverage of a Eurovision story. Please keep it up!
So heartbreaking to watch. This brought home the reality of how dreams can be shattered. Best wishes to James and to all the artists for gifting us with your talent and amazing songs. Hope to see you at Eurovision next year. Stay safe everyone.
Beautifully made, sensitive yet captivating. It's refreshing to see something on bbc were they take Eurovision, the artists and this year's situation seriously
😭😭 Still ugly crying. Thank you BBC for this documentary and highlighting the amazing artists!!! Eurovision is just one of those special things in life. ❤️
I'm from the Netherlands. It's so sad that we have to wait until we finally can host the contest again, but it's especially sad for the artists. All these songs deserved to be performed on such a big stage for a worldwide event.
I am sad for you, I know you have been waiting a long time to host this. But rest assured that we will all celebrate with you next year and give your country all the love and recognition you deserve
@@filmgeek520 thank you
Such a letdown for all the artists to have it cancelled, you were all excited and building up to it and then, that’s it 😢😢😢😢😢 now there are 41 equal first place winners, but I feel you have all been left hanging, you need closure.
DAMN PROPS TO THE EDITOR
IKR ITS INSANE
Thank you so much for making this video. One of the most beautiful things I've seen. Stay strong, stay safe everyone all over the world and I hope you do well and I hope I'll see all of you beautiful people again next year in my home country The Netherlands.
That was emotional!! 😥
Thank you so much for this heartbreaking Documentary!
I really hope that James will come back in 2021! Stay healthy! Greetings from Germany!
ten seconds in and im sobbing
Nice to see the BBC giving us non-mandatory Eurovision content! I think the song was definitely better than last year's entry and would have come 25th @ ESC2020
It is heart-breaking to see this but I just love how you put the lyrics of the Eurovision songs that sounds like it will fit
We’re gonna go even harder in 2021! James Newman ❤️🔥
What a down to earth ,ordinary guy.Hope to see you on the Euro stage next year!!
I'm not crying ...
You are
😪😭
im in love with james' song!
This is so upsetting. I should be there right now. We would have flown out on Thursday. :( I really hope that James gets his chance next year.
Please come back next yr with a belter of a song please something we havent heard before
Ah, i was so excited for Latvia and Lithuania this year...they had a good songs, well maybe next year😔
Hi from Ukraine. Thank you for this video ❤
The contest was not held because the Rotterdam city government would not have enough time to dismantle the field hospital prior to the contest. The Rotterdam city government declared a public health emergency on March 13 because of the pandemic and they decided to convert Rotterdam Ahoy into a field hospital.
The King has returned
I miss Eurovision so much 😫
this is really sad 💔
cant stop crying
Are you sure that you didn’t forget someone at Eurovision 2020 acts?? (at the end of this video)
Everyone is a winner this year.
James newman to win eurovison in top 10
I don't care what the ESC jury and voters said. Newman was great. Such a positive vibe.
olly murs was in this video ??? can u say which second
Theodora Kerckring 7:20 and after
Send him.
😢😢😢😢😢😢
Most of these clips were filmed prior to the cancellation. How did they know they had to film this? What was the original intent of these James Newman clips?
In the Netherlands they always make some kind of documentary about how the contestant prepared for ESC in the months before. I guess the BBC does something similar for the British artist. Therefore they have this footage.
They made a film about his prep for 2021 which did go ahead. I guess they thought people might be interested.
🥰🥰🥰
How lovely of Lesley to tell us to listen to other countrys songs
I wanna scrum against james - he must be so awesome to play against :-) To BBC PLs keep him as the same artist as he rocked!
James Newman
they should let 2020 artist sing in 2021,they worked so hard and it is ashame they can't perform on the stage.
How they are related to John Newmann?
Atong Badong James is his Brother
Shame we couldn't send him.
The elves went too far :pepehands:

This is just silly. No way is Eddie Yates gonna get outta the bottom five. Sorry to be so blunt but someone's gotta say it.

To be honest I liked 2019 entry more
Although I really like the UK song, it would have been bottom 5 at best.

@@coolguybrian Guess we'd never know
No, not even close...

@Carlos Grimaldo Hëxëř Because we don't try. Why would Europe vote for a country that isn't bothered. Bit of a waste.
Cancelled for the best ai.
Lol! The British beast corporation has another dead channel. Not surprisingly.
Until the UK sends a GOOD song, Eurovision is canceled. Karma, anyone? 😞
🇮🇱💕🇬🇧
I dont like him, just saying and the song it's just ok until THAT HIGH FORCED 'BREATH' comes...
My heart bleeds, NOT. DOWN WITH THE BBC SCUM
Paul Shutt ok calm down we’ve had people like you before (2018)
It seems people are more heartbroken because of Eurovisión not happening rather than the amount of people dying and how people are having a bad time during these though time... That's a shame
Nobody has said that but we don't have to keep taking about it all the time. For many of us this contest is our love and not having it is devastating and once in a lifetime opportunity for these guys. So yes it is heartbreaking
@@carlthompson1247 but we do have to keep talking about the artist that won't perform, and we have to keep talking about the songs that won't be on stage ? Because right that's more important than human lives...
@@carlthompson1247 what I am saying is that the main reason Eurovision was to reunite Europe, the approach could have been different but you are not ready for this conversation...
I can't speak for you, but most people are able to care about more than one thing at a time.
@@theadopou oh wow didn't know that...
It’s the best thing that’s ever happened no fooking Eurovision. Free the planet from crap tunes.
Yeah 2021 called and said you're full of shite.
Thanks peace love and stars
