Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster; six-time Tony Award® winner Audra McDonald as Madame Garderobe, the wardrobe; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.
Directed by Oscar® winner Bill Condon from a screenplay by TBD based on the 1991 animated film, the film is produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman with eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, who won two Academy Awards® (Best Original Score and Best Song) for the 1991 animated film, providing the score, which will include new recordings of the original songs written by Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as several new songs written by Menken and three-time Oscar winner Tim Rice.

I'd say not just Beast and the servants, but also the towns people as they were also condoning the prince's behavior. Belle and Her father never quite fitting in because they were free thinking and inventive.

I was thinking maybe the enchantress could be Belle's mother because we never actually see her mom die, Maurice takes baby Belle away before the plague takes her. But does it? Although now I'm thinking maybe she's the prince's mother. Teaching her son a lesson about love and being a decent person, reversing what his father did to him. Instead of just letting the curse take place, she keeps an eye on them and when she sees that Belle really does love him, she reverses the curse not only for Belle, but for herself because she didn't want her son to die.

    • @FlicksAndTheCity
      @FlicksAndTheCity  7 лет назад +17

That's a really interesting point, Abbey, about Belle's mother. I thought it was very intriguing that Disney produced that YA novel where the Enchantress is actually Belle's mum! :-)

I relived my childhood seeing this movie. Any time Emma sang, I cried. All of the music made me cry, really. It reminded me why I loved this movie so much; I identified with Belle because she loved books and she felt like an outcast, both of which are still true. This seriously deserves a 2018 Oscar nomination, as well as the cast.

I don't think she's cruel at all. She was trying to not only teach the prince a lesson but save him from a worse fate. I think that maybe she had Belle in mind for him all along and that's why she led Maurice to the castle in the first place. She intervened on several occasions and showed compassion, not cruelty. I really liked her character in this version. I don't think she's Belle's mother though and doubt she's the prince's. His mother may have sent her though... ?

The one think I really loved about this movie is that with every pedal fallen the hole castle was grumbling and eventually if the beast was not going to find true love and remain a beast forever the hole castle was meant to be distroyed and disapear from the face of earth like there was never there.

This movie is simply amazing to me. I'm a production designer and just looking at all the period accurate costumes and sets just blows my mind. I know how hard of work it is to make something period accurate and it adds another level to the film for me. Another thing is seeing all those extras in the opening town scene dancing along and singing blows my mind. Extras tend to do whatever the hell they want and seeing them all so well coordinated just threw me through a loop.

Really loved how Disney added more about the Enchantress. And I really like what you said about the Enchantress being a mother figure for the Beast. Feel like that is definitely true because the Beast needed an intervention! Really loved the ending to the new movie. It was definitely an emotional moment when they turned into the antiques. And liked how they still had Belle say I love you as that was a cue to the Enchantress that she loved Beast. Thanks for sharing!

Love the way you put it about the Beast needing an intervention! :-) The way they tweaked the ending was very effective, I agree, and yes, very emotional seeing everyone turn into ordinary antiques. I think the enchantress IS the wolves. The wolves stop Belle from escaping the castle, fighting and losing to the Beast and prompting Belle's decision to return with him. The next time we see Agatha she is nursing Maurice and has a black eye and a long cut on her face. I think these injuries are as a result of the fight with the Beast.

I like how it shows the Enchantress more in this movie. Watching the cartoon I always wondered what happened to the Enchantress at the end. In the cartoon it seems like the Enchantress is the bad guy. She curses the prince and disappears. It was great in this one how she kept an eye on the curse and was the one that broke it at the end. Although I did miss the magic fireworks changing everything back...

  • @markandersh
    @markandersh 7 лет назад +4

I too took note of Mrs Potts accepting responsibility on behalf of all of the staff, for doing nothing to stop the prince and this being the reason that they too were punished too. They were not innocent victims of an indiscriminately cast spell.

As soon as Agatha helped Maurice I had an inkling that she might be more than what she appeared and then when I saw the owl (Greek mythology/Athena) I knew who she was and was happy every time she showed up. When Gaston insulted her as not being worthy of being a witness I thought to myself, "Buddy, you're toast!"

    • @elcucy

Thank you for posting this. When I went to see Beauty and the Beast, the theater was having technical errors and started the movie at Belle's opening number and we missed the entire Enchantress story. I was actually the person to originally come up with the "the Enchantress is Belle's mother" theory. I have proof in that I wrote about it 6 months before the "Old as Time" book came out, and I posted it online, with a time stamp verification. But I keep getting quite a bit of rude replies and harassment from others whenever I mention this, so I won't speak further about it.
Anyways, I now think that the Enchantress was a mother figure for the Beast after his birth mother died. Her name in the film, Agathe, matches that of the surrogate mother / guardian / nanny for the "Lost Prince", Louis XVII. She raised him like her own son, was devastated when he disappeared during the French Revolution, and even (like the grandmother in the movie "Anastasia") judged men who later claimed to be the "Lost Prince" in order to claim the French throne.

Am I the only one who prefers animated Enchantress over the live action one??? It gave her much more mystery and having her just during prologue provided even deeper meaning to 'you need to pay for your mistakes' (like karma)
In 2017, she appeared out of nowhere at the ball, not to mention her walking in like a cheap Scary movie zombie... Prince didn't turn her away, neither begged for mercy. In the finale, I dislike how soooo much attention was put into her
instead of Belle & Beast - she could reverse the curse from afar, not to come inside.
Btw, her role being expanded is nothing new, it was already done way before this remake, in 2011 Beastly - Mary Kate Olsen played her and she did interfere through the story.

Loved this live version of Beauty & the Beast. Thank you Bill Condon cast & crew for breathing additional life into an Alan Menken & the late Howard Ashman score for giving a Beast his soul...The casting, filming, costuming, location, & score were beautifully combined, and while I loved all the characters, Gaston stole the show for me personally...loved the expanded role of the Enchantress too with her guiding hand, but also wish some of the deleted scenes had made it into the original film to round out this live version of the story...I have to admit I was perplexed with the ending of the movie as the last petal fell and Belle had not yet declared her love for Beast. After hearing this secrets montage, it makes sense; even tho the beginning of the movie dictates that if he could love & have someone love him in return before the last petal fell could make for an interesting debate.

I loved seeing more of the Enchantress. I didn't find her cruel at all. Turning the prince into the beast was warranted--and there wouldn't have been any story without that happening. :) I enjoyed seeing more of her in the live-action version, just as I loved all the backstory that was conveyed in the live-action. The ending was perfect. Until you mentioned in this video that the Enchantress reversed the fallen rose petals, I hadn't really thought much about that. I did wonder why Belle didn't tell the Beast she loved him before the final petal fell and before the Beast died and the other characters became simply "antiques." Your theory on this was perfect and added a new dimension to the movie, which was already a wonderful piece of storytelling!

I think the Enchantress was probably a faerie (the mythological kind, not the tinkerbell kind); not only were faeries known to occasionally disguise themselves, not only were their true forms explicitly said to possess otherworldly beauty, but they were also notorious for cursing humans who didn't treat them with respect, and rarely cared for the potential collateral damage of their pranks. They weren't necessarily evil, their concepts of morality were just alien to mortal men. In the Enchantress' case, she figured she'd test this mortal for whatever reason, then when he failed the test she punished him--and the servants just happened to get caught in the crossfire.

(I am female, I just use my husband's log-in.) I loved the cartoon version of course but love the live action version even more! I loved how the live action version showed the castle servants turning into inanimate objects and although I KNOW they will be restored back into their human form, I STILL tear up each time I watch it, as they say their goodbyes. I also LOVE how the coat rack's final act is catching Chip (so he doesn't break like the saucer did) and gently place him by his Mother! Great call on ALL OF THAT! The entire part was beautifully done and showed what a true family they all had become. It was one of the greatest parts (in my opinion) of the movie. And although it COULD have NOT been shown (as the Disney movie did not portray it) it added so much to the overall movie I feel. Bravo!!

Thank you for expanding upon the story of the enchantress in a older version I watched (sorry I've no links) the beast is revived but not transformed into his human form as it stands true to the title beauty and the beast she marries the beast and the enchanted objects such as clogsworth stays a clock and they seem to be happy about it I love that twist it seems more well interesting thanks for the great expansion on agatha your videos make my day

Not really they are just hiding their true feelings I wish I could have done more and helped the innocent villagers from fighting us rather than attacking us since they are technically family. There are other ways the villagers could have just turned on Gaston and put him into the insane asylum or killed him

Mrs. Potts' throwaway line about the servants being cursed because of their partial responsibility in how the Beast turned out is a neat way to "fix" the "problem" of why they were cursed too… except there was no such problem to begin with, even in the original version.
The thing is, the Beast was cursed because of his own selfishness and lack of empathy, alright. But his selfishness does not only affect himself, it's something that ends up making everyone miserable, including his loved ones. It makes perfect sense for his servants to be cursed too, because that taught him (and the audience) that one's selfishness has very real consequences on other people's lives too, even if they have no fault of their own. Indeed, the fact that it has consequences on and makes faultless people miserable too was the whole point, in my opinion. Perhaps too subtle a point for someone, I concede, which is why I don't take umbrage with this little change.

Awesome video! I've been thinking the same thing. The Enchantress and Cinderella's Fairy Godmother are very similar because they do the same thing, which is disguising as a dirty old lady and revealing their magical true self. However, Cinderella treats the Fairy Godmother nicely so the fairy helps her; while the beast, gets cursed because of being rude and arrogant.
In this case, the Enchantress looks more like a fairy with that bright light around her. However, another version says that she's a witch.
I love both Helena Bonham Carter and Hattie Morahan. Their acting is great and their faces fit the characters.

It seems a bit unfair for the Enchantress to leave Gaston to his own devices and not try to whip him into shape, considering he's just as bad if not worse than the Prince was pre-curse. I get that the Prince is more politically powerful than some hunter in a small village, but Agathe was around Gaston for a decade in Villeneuve and did nothing to help him, and then he even ends up DEAD in the end for his trouble. All the while, the Prince gets cured of his dark heart and ends up happy with Belle. I just see it as unjust when both men were awful and needed her help.

I noticed something. Remember what the Beast looked like in the 18th-century French story of Beauty And The Beast by Gabrielle-Suzanne? Look at the sword fighting scene in the song 'Gaston' The moment he poses after the sword fight, I can see the 18th-century BEAST! See for yourself! 8:24 PAUSE and look at that wolf-like creature! It looked like the Beast! It looked so similiar! I mean look at the FANGS!

I love that the enchantress has a big role in the movie because she is one the one that helps the story move along and and is actually helping and leading Maurice in the castle in the movie made belle arrive to save him and hem meeting so the enchantress is basically the one that is the helper.

Part of me wishes Gaston had survived, simply so the Enchantress could hex him next. I absolutely loved Agatha in this film as soon as we saw her on screen me and my Bestie knew she was going to be important as she just seemed like one of those characters that was more than just background.
I think my only gripe with this move (2 technically) is that I wish they had used the deleted version of Days in the Sun, and that the Beast's transformation at the end more closely resembled transformation sequence in the original e.g. used the coloured magical rain, I really loved that in the original. other than that I loved everything about it. The stakes felt higher and I honestly found myself far more emotionally invested in the characters this time around.

had anybody notice that in the movie (quick spoilers) when bell is being dragged in the acumeme cart that the 3 girls were smiling and laughing at her. and that the 3 girls got weapons and comes with Gaston and everybody else to the beasts castle (which had you notice is shaped like the rose the enchantress/adaga/bells/beast's mother (a theory on my own.) gave him) and attract it. just shows that those girls love Gaston and follow
his behavior though out the film even if he doe's go WAY to far and cross the line (well in
bells eyes) when he doe's try to put moruese in the assume. even lafu regrets following Gaston's plot trough out the film and that Mrs. pots says ''your too good for him any ways''
meaning that lafu should let him go. and that I think the enchantress is bells mother after she left her crude husband and died to come as adaga to brake the spell after one of the castle's bridges fall down, thus killing Gaston. I bet those girls are crying right now. in my head watching it I was like ''sorry girls even though that Gaston's my second favert Disney villain w/h 1st one being jafar because addladen is my 1st fav Disney film (true fact) which means this is my 2ed fav Disney film fairy tale he still was a jerk to bell and kind of deserve it.'' * I know I gave away a lot more than I got but I couldn't help it.

I think the expanded role of the enchantress made the story more magical. Having her around more and watching showed she wasn't just some angry crone who cursed a little boy. The curse while harsh was truly something she wanted him to learn from. And having her around also showed how magic is a living thing not just as simple as snap here's a curse. I loved how the castle would crumble more with each petal falling. The fact that it was also then the enchantress using the cursed object essentially ( the rose ) to undo the curse played more into that feeling of magic having life. All in all very good move imo.

I thought the enchantress is the one who was entrusted by the queen to take care of her son (maybe they used to be great friends). That is why she care about the prince so much and guided such a 'lesson' to both the prince and his potential princess. Besides, I did not think Gaston really got death in the end. In most fictional scenes, characters did not die even they fall down from some high and dangerous places. I used to think this is a clue to the sequel (fan disc).

I think that she was probably included more because in the original she just abandons the Prince but to prevent her from becoming a bad character she watches over the beast and ensures that he learns his lesson. Also since she watched over it all it shows that she never wanted him to suffer and always intended for him to be free again. And with regard to things like Maurice taking the rose and things it was probably because you can't make a film for children teaching kids to marry abusive people so I think Maurice took a rose to give the beast a reason to be angry instead of just being cruel. also it was beasts dad's fault he was horrible and the film tells you this, telling children that beast isn't actually horrible and belle hasn't married and abusive person

They could have use the same actor for her fathers roll but they didnt on purpose. different actress doesnt mean that Agathe isnt belles mother. look at the painting, belles mother looked exact like Agathe in the end.

When I saw the original cartoon version I wondered if the mother had a fairy be a god mother to her daughter. Hearing this video it seems sensible that if Belle's mother had been a fairy her sister might look after her niece. Who's to say that a fairy who married a human might have to give up her magical heritage. Her sister might not have had to give up her fairy heritage having never married a mortal and from a distance could care for her niece's future.

There are other things, worth also to notice. In Beauty and the Beast, The Enchanted Christmas, we learn that the Beast can't read, and Belle teaches him. In the new real-life version, the Beast have got a proper education, and taking the place as a private pupil with Belle, is in stead a little town girl.

Marianne Jensen I think the beast could read in the original. Considering from the story, he was a boy so he went to school. Since he was already really rich obviously his parents would send him to the best school out there. He asked Belle to read because he wanted to hear her read and also because he hasn't read in so long he needed to catch up again. But he obviously knew how to read before, he just hasn't done sit in a while probably

I'd say the Enchantress is neither good nor bad. She's a magical being, barely affected by the mortal realm, and as such, can behave however she pleases, no matter the moral implications. It's kinda like trying to argue with a hurricane, you kind have a toss up of whether or not you'd survive something so powerful while doing something so stupid.

I thought that was a lovely addition to the movie too, Raghu, the way they slowly became more like objects (gaining feathers or their joints seizing up more) until at the very end they were totally inanimate. And I loved the way they came back to life as well, for example, Plumette appeared out of a pile of feathers! :-)

I loved that as well. I like the slight changes they made to the film where the cursed was lifted by the Enchantress but in the animated movie Bell's love to the Beast is what set everyone free reverting everyone back to human. I also loved the voice Cast as well and most of the actors had similar voice characteristics to David Ogden Steirs, Jerry Orbach, Angela Lansbery, Robbie Benson, Paige O' Hara. Some of the actors sounded like the younger versions of Lumiere, Bell while Dan Steven's voice was close to Robbie Benson's voice but I feel they modulated that to match it Benson's which I thought was perfect.
