Bánh Mì Isn’t Just a Vietnamese Po’ Boy

- Though Vietnamese and Cajun cuisines share a lot of common ground, it wasn’t until a community of immigrants and refugees came to New Orleans in the 1970s that the flavors fused. Over time, their descendants have begun to experiment and introduce new ideas, from Cajun crawfish to brisket bánh mì (and even a phở-rrito). We explore the best spots in the city to shop and eat like a true local.

No one thinks Bánh Mì Is Just a Vietnamese Po’ Boy.
white ppl.
@@localnatives1 brb currently looking for the nigga that laughed
right? lol white people at it again trying to steal cultural identity
Let it be, bring everyone up :/
Obviously it's about New Orleans.
A Vietnamese guy with a Southern accent. My life is complete.
That's how we all sound down here in New orleans. I didnt know we had an "accent" lmao
Which one? They all have a pretty standard American accent. I didn’t really hear any southern accent
Shit you just wait till you meet a Vietnamese- Australian.
@@reginaphalange1403 2:25 and 6:15 they have more of a New Orleans accent
@@Canoe_XD hm honestly I can’t tell. Just sounds like a standard accent lol
The Vietnamese community has done great things for Fort Worth, TX. Very happy to experience their culture with dozens of spots in my neighborhood
The Vietnamese community has done great things for New Orleans. Thankful that something so beautiful emerged from such an ugly war.
they have a pretty ugly language as well, but i agree with the rest
@@johnlinsky19 that hurts ;-;
@@johnlinsky19 thats really rude and pretty racist! Their language (s) are unique and special as is every language.
@@johnlinsky19 Have you heard German? Swedish is pretty foul, too, and that's coming from a native Swede. Vietnamese has some pretty cool sonic qualities to it.
@@johnlinsky19 Typical thinking of ignorant men.
You can hear their mix of Vietnamese and Louisiana accent. It's pretty cool !
0:25 I thought he’d be an older southern black lady from his voice 😂
😂😂😂 now I can't unsee it
Lmao
Lub dat chicken from PoPeYeS
Nice touch with that gospel humming when he started talking
@First name Last name sounds like the Popeye lady
This story so relatable growing up a Vietnamese refugee.
Her accent is crazy awesome combination
Easily one of the most interesting videos I've seen posted by Munchies.
it's a Vice video 🙌😁
You should see more
This is an excerpt from a bug doco by vice
I want to go to New Orleans just to go to their restaurant.....food looks absolutely amazing.
@Daisy Meaux Juice’ yes ma’am
I’m proud of young Asian generation stepping up and running business and restaurants and shops and I love Vietnamese restaurants and Asian folks and beautiful mix of different culture here in Sacramento California much love ❤️ and keep it up and thanks for sharing your journey and ideas and showing supports all around the world 🌎
Alohaaa Frm Sacramento 🌺🙏❤️
Wow,the story telling with the people, by the people and for these people, outstanding. The cooks and farmers and the communities coming together. Yes this is what America is truly about and what makes us great. Not wearing some dumb ass hat. Munchies you should be very proud of this video. Thank you for sharing this with us. Now I have yet another reason to get down to New Orleans and are and meet these wonderful people. 🦐🍺🦞🍺🦀 😃
heck yeah. this is the America I want more of.
Fantastic representation of a very special and thoroughly Southeast Asian-American community here in the States, that is steeped in history. Love to see it.
I hope you guys do more documentaries covering communities like this because us Southeast Asians can be found in practically every city in America!
I'll be honest, living in Canada I've never even heard the term Po'Boy. But I've been eating Banh Mi since 7th grade.
I live in Canada too and I've had dozens of po'boys hahah... maybe it's a coastal thing? You're not really missing out though, banh mi are way better
@Daisy Meaux Juice’ Thank you. I actually never tried one or even heard the expression before, but I had banh mi a lot.
Funny seeing you here Luke
@Daisy Meaux Juice’ while I understand what you're saying, I don't see why a po'boy isn't also technically a bahn mi? If visit where we're from (Luke & I), I think there's more people who are familiar with banh mi's than po'boys, so explaining a po'boy here would be saying something like it's a bahn mi but with southern style fried shrimp.
Or all of them just be called a sandwich since that's what they call 'em in France lol...
It's all just a matter of perspective.
This literally blows my mind that you appeared in the youtube comments. What are the chances. Also ur right Po'boy is technically a Banh mi, and if the French invented it then they would call it a Pouvre Garcon.
Best sandwich in the world
Nah bro, Spanish jamón with olive oil and tomato
Its a baguette not a sandwich. Im from Vietnam. You can also just call it bánh mì to be honest lol
Hands down. Tortas and Bahn Mi
I’m more of a subway sandwich guy. SIKE bahn mi is my top
idk, a sandwich with ham + cheese from home hits different
NHU all southern accent and lookin cute, dang
As a first-generation Vietnamese American. This hits home. We're all fighting for the American dream in one way or another.
Same here, first gen Vietnamese American, now living in Vietnam. This makes me miss home a lot.
God bless your people. 😍😍😋😋😋
The Vietnamese folks on the MS gulf coast are fantastic. Integral part of the coast.
@@TURBOLANDRAIDER I'm from the bay area of california. A good number of support the San Jose area with a local Vietnamese SuperMarket called Dai Thanh. Been there ever since I was a kid.

If you go to Houston, the Viet Cajun Crawfish is amazing.
Could’ve easily watched another 30 mins of this.
literally have never heard anyone describe banh mi as a vietnamese po' boy, but thanks, vice
I suggest you try a Bánh mi with sunny side up and runny yolk and soy sauce as breakfast.
Basically how I grew up.
Pretty much what most Vietnamese people grew up on
The best and most classic spot is Dong Phuong Bakery. Kudos to yall for showing love for the new wave though.
Nhu is beautiful! 🔥🔥
Couldn't agree more!
Because she works in the kitchen 🤪🤪🤪 agree totally
This is making me miss all of my vietnamese friends from childhood. I should really get on that facebook thing and look some people up.
Good luck!
Good French bread and pickled veggies are the ultimate sandwich hack. You can put any meat option and it'll be awesome.
Thank you for showing the beautiful side of our home. Nola loves you munchies ☀️
Beautiful film and great interviews.
Haven’t had a actual Po Boy in way too long but would love to try this French Cajun vs Vietnamese mashup
Now it all makes sense. I always wondered how they ended up in the gulf states. Need to book a flight ASAP
Really great content and very inspiring!
New Orleans would definitely be one of my top three places to visit if I ever went to the US. The food looks beyond amazing and the communities seem so welcoming and warm.
Love ur content
Always educational
this video really illustrates the essence of community
Id like to think of it as a Po' Mi aka Poor me with the southern slang lol
Great story...great folks...fantastic looking food...and New Orleans🙏
One of my classmates spoke with Khai about the Veggi co-op for a research project last year! Super down to earth, kind dude who's really out here improving the Vietnamese community in nola
Sooo good, I love both

Southeast Asians are resilient, especially Vietnamese and Cambodian
What about the filipinos?
@@cvilla5631 are you guys southeast Asian?
@@lowbvll8969 I think so. They just hosted the latest Southeast Asian Games and was part of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations since its inception, so I guess they are.
@@jocefianrama Yay, I was talking about the wars. Namely the Vietnam war and war in Cambodia during Khmer Rouge regime. I’m Cambodian and Vietnamese and I still consider Filipino as Pacific Islanders and that’s not wrong.

Awesome video, I NEED to visit my vietnamese brothers and sisters in New Orleans!
So proud, love from Vietnam!
One of the reason why I proud to be a Vietnamese
@Chí Phèo nguyễn Trying really hard to sound like a douchebag, aren't you?
@Chí Phèo nguyễn this way of thinking is how people started thinking others as lesser and dehumanizing them. It leads to evil things and is very ignorant.
@@EyDerVu He's partly right though, a lot of Vietnamese Americans can't speak Vietnamese anymore and associate themselves less with Vietnamese culture. Same way German or Italian Americans who have been here generations wouldn't consider themselves German or Italian anymore.
@@richbrook101 He replied to a "true" Vietnamese and not an Vietnamese American, though.
In the past decade there has been a wave of Vietnamese Americans who wanted to to get in touch with their roots and returned to Vietnam. You don't have to be a full blooded Vietnamese to feel like one. You could say the same about first generation immigrants who came to the U.S. Many of them still keep in touch with their traditions and roots and can still be American patriots at the same time.
@@EyDerVu Yeah you’re right, although if he was talking about Vietnamese Americans in general, my point still stands. For example, I’ve seen some of them spelling Banh Mi as Bahn Mi - which is Americanized version and that’s just wrong. First American immigrants preserved the most important aspect of their former British culture - the English language. Same with French in Quebec.
Banh Mi sandwiches are my vice. So good!
Man put the crawfish inside a huge cooler and mixed all the ingredients by shifting the cooler. Yes sir
theres something really satisfying sbout seeing crawfish marinated and tossed in a cooler box! southern style 😁🤓👍
Great video,great content ❤️👍🏼
Vietnamese women from NOLA got that southern twang in them
In Philly and South Jersey we call it Vietnamese hoagies... Yum
Been desperately wanting to try one of these sammies
This video is very well done and the quality is incredible. Kudos to everyone who contributed to creating this amazing video and sharing the Vietnamese-American experience. These are great cultural stories that transcends race and borders. I hope all of these stories become part of the Library of Congress - Stories of Americana.
Holy this looks freaking delicious
It really is an experience everyone should have.
Must try when we visit New Orleans again.
More like this!
It really is cool to see Vietnamese and Cajun food coming together. Both French influenced but in opposite sides of the world.
Nhu is well into her 60’s. She’s still strong and kicking and cooking.
Big EZ is good! I was there this past February and it was super good!

It’s an edit of a doco but I still love it

Yes it is
Dam I'm going here next time I come to NOLA. Gotta support my peeps!
awesome video,💛
Thank you and your community for bringing even more diversity to New Orleans cuisine. The cross influence can be compared with that of Italian and African influences.... but with a KICK!!
Oh I haven't enjoyed banh mi in a long time. I definitely need one of those in my mouth today.
I miss Calgary. So much cilantro so good... :)
I like vietnamese food, they all taste so healthy and use fresh ingredients

New Orleans gave me nine of the best years of my life. Amazing place to learn to cook. Advice for any young, aspiring cook: move to New Orleans, stage around, hell, try your luck at Commander’s Palace- it’s a culinary boot camp.
Miss Vietnam !
Damn this style of Bahn Mi needs to come over here to Socal. It looks so good.
Can i have list name of all theme songs? I love to hear them all. Quite peaceful.
