Nice! I regret not trying a banh mi during my short visit to the north of Vietnam (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Sapa,Bac Ha, Lao Cai). I’ve always loved a good banh mi, and am so thankful that the Vietnamese refugees that I worked with in the early 80’s Silicon Valley electronics industry introduced me to the culture, language, cuisine (and the feminine beauty) of Vietnam, and took me to San Jose’s evolving Little Saigon for the first of countless visits. My favorite version of the icon sandwich would be the banh mi thit nuong, featuring the smoky, sweet, salty and savory charcoal grilled pork marinated in aromatic lemongrass, nuoc mam fish sauce and a host of other ingredients, with extra pate and the optional fried egg. My love of the banh mi truly developed thanks to the Vietnamese mom & pop deli/sandwich/mini marts, one very close to SJSU’s old campus library, where a banh mi could be had for USD $1.50, a banh bao dac biet combo steamed bun with minced pork, a piece of Chinese sausage and half a hard boiled egg for $1, and a pate chaud puff pastry filled with minced pork for $0.50, plus $0.50 for a can of cold coffee with milk & sugar. There was also a Vietnamese restaurant right across from the college library with an excellent ‘fish and shrimp stewed in the pot’, with a small catfish steak and 5 or 6 shrimp tails simmered in a caramelized sugar, nuoc mam fish sauce & fresh ground black pepper sauce that was sweet, salty, savory and black pepper hot, which went perfectly over jasmine rice, with hot jasmine tea as a beverage and a ca phe sua da iced strong Trung Nguyen Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. Another Vietnamese restaurant up Fourth Street had an excellent Vietnamese style dry coconut chicken curry that was a favorite on mine. Now in SoCal, I can enjoy the benefits of the largest Little Saigon in the US located in Orange County, which host an authentic summer Vietnamese night market with lots of outdoor street food vendors, plus a two week Tet Cho Hoa Flower and Night Market annually around the Lunar New Year.

Awesome episode of the Banh Mi! I think that I have an interesting take on the Banh Mi with the Chinese Roast Pork Belly. Here's a few variations on the sandwich: Some American influence: Use the pork drippings to emulsify with egg yolk and make a pork dripping mayo. Spread onto sandwich instead of pate. Some Chinese influence: Coat the roast pork in Chinese Hot Mustard (Also known as English Mustard) after chopping. Spread on one side of the sandwich. Some French influence: Instead of coating sugar for the roast pork belly, use honey to balance the flavors, as a charcuterie board would have. Some Indian/Bengal/Pakistani/Sri Lanka/General South Asian Influence: Make a chutney using fish sauce as a key differentiator. Some Italian influence: Make it a panino (Panini is plural) Some Japanese influence: Add yuzu juice to the pickling liquid for the daikon and carrots. Some Korean influence: Use gochujang with the fish sauce. Spread that on one side of the bun. Some Mexican influence: Create a guacamole with the pickled vegetables and herbs. Spread it in place of a Pate. Some Singaporean/Malay influence: Use a satay sauce to coat pork belly. It's not halal though.

Yay, Andy and Calvin Collaborating!!!!!!! This is so awesome
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thanks for watching Leah!!!
Man I love this channel.. so pure.
I just love your expression on each and every video that you have shared with us.
I’m happy to see you’re in my home country! I’m here as well. Much love from the US!
Wow, I'm excited to see your journey in Ho Chi Minh City exploring the delicious Vietnamese Banh Mi! Your dedication to understanding traditional styles and modern twists is admirable. Can't wait for next week's recipe video, where you'll surely share the best recipes for us to recreate at home.
I'm in Melbourne and something I invented for my self and you must try If you happen to find a hybrid cafe (viet + western sandwitches), try a Banh Mi with the traditional condiments but replace the main meat with a chicken shnitzel!
I love Bahn Mi. The fact that there’s a pop up just behind my house that only opens for 5 hours on the weekends and it’s always packed, shows just how delicious it is. And the fact I can walk 5 minutes every Saturday to go grab a few, I’m spoiled man 😂
Haha I recognised Calvin instantly, even from the back. And then he threw in the peace at the end 😂😂
Those all looked incredible, but the one thing that got me was that bread ❤
I'm mad for Bahn Mi, thanks for the tips in VN. Can't wait to visit. Hi from Newcastle, Australia. 🥖❤️🌏
Bánh Mì☺️😊
Absolutely THE BEST video on RUclips about Bánh Mì.. can't wait to see what you do with this once back in Aussie!
Bánh Mì😊
Hey Andy I'm extremely happy that you visit Vietnam to learn about the roots of Banh Mi, also thank you FlightCentre for given that chance.
I really would love to see a follow-up video in which you show us your favorite noodle soups from the vietnamese cuisine (since there are quite a few)
And maybe what dish you would create with the new learnings from the trip.
Yes gents. Would love to eat a Banh Mi with both of you. I’m heading over to Vietnam on 13 Aug 2023, from my home in Sydney. Looking forward to trying some of the stuffs you have tried.
We are currently here. The Bahnmi from Bahnmi Huyhn Hoa is life changing, ill never see sandwich the same way again! I’m tearing up a little knowing I wont be tasting it again after this trip!
Banh Mi is possibly my favorite Asian food, the best one I had was in Hanoi a few years back.
I am a Vietnamese, I have watched so many videos of you. I have seen you cooked Pho. and today I see this video. it is my pleasure that you visit Vietnam. I appreciate that you like banh mi. To me you are big chef and a professional and I didn’t expect that you love Vietnamese food 😱😱🥰🥰🥰🥰
This sandwich should be always be #1
I had been to vietnam back in may and boy did I have a lot of banh mi
I truly miss that cuisine
Bahn mi is the King of Sandwiches
Friggin love Calvin so much ❤ omfg the ah peace at the end was the absolute best ever!!!! 😉😂❤
100% top 5 global sandwich varieties!
But to be fair, in reality the consumer experience is somewhat different if you don't have a camera / crew with you 😢
After touring Vietnam and Cambodia for some time myself, the reality is in fact a much less filled, yet equally delicious Banh Mi.
Please don't think that if you're traveling to Vietnam for Banh Mi you'll experience a stuffed 'Subway' baguette. You won't... But what you will experience is one of the freshest, crispiest, fluffiest sub filled with freshly cooked meat and veggies served with love 🤤
THANKS FOR THE VIDEO ANDY, I WAS IN THE US NAVY 1986-1990 AND DIDN'T GET TO VIETNAM BUT WE DID GO TO THAILAND AND THE PHILIPPINES. THE ASIAN PEOPLE ARE VERY KIND AND ARE VERY PROUD OF THEIR COUNTRIES. PEACE AND BLESSINGS TO ALL. 🇺🇸❤️✌️
Wow banh mi looks yummy 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤I lives in UK for long time and everytime I watched video about food in Vietnam I missed a lots food and thank you for good videos 😅 god bless ❤❤❤
🎉 Love the series, Andy ! May want to visit Vietnam just for these...or maybe just wait for the cookbook 😊
Awesome episode of the Banh Mi! I think that I have an interesting take on the Banh Mi with the Chinese Roast Pork Belly. Here's a few variations on the sandwich:
Some American influence: Use the pork drippings to emulsify with egg yolk and make a pork dripping mayo.
Some Italian influence: Make it a panino (Panini is plural)
Some Japanese influence: Add yuzu juice to the pickling liquid for the daikon and carrots.
This makes me miss my hometown so so much
Yo I found Andy only recently, I had him on my Radar for a while but only started watching his Videos recently. However, I've been watching BEFRS for fricking Years now and Calvin and Sunny obviously have one of the most amazing chemistries you could possibly have but holy shit is this a Crossover I did not expect ! I wish there was so much more of you two together !!! That was amazing. Thank you.
Btw. I'm obviously binging all of Andy's stuff now. Up there with BEFRS for me. Bourdain, Sunny, Andy.
You barely scratched the surface for banh mi...so many different kinds/combinations out there. I love the pork bell one, but he didn't answer when it was created. I'd say over 50 years ago at least because I grew up eating something similar and I'm decades old. My dad made a char sieu version that I loved growing up using pork belly. That last one looks amazing...but a wee bit too much meat, even for a meat lover like me. Needs more of a balance between meet and bread ratio.
Definitely needs more meat 😅
yesssss. it's a sandwich not a pie, the meat should defo not thicker than the bread. This such a pet peeve of mine.
Banh mi goes well with different kinds of toppings. They're so delicious. Thank you for introducing Vietnamese food to the world :D
I love Banhi Mi there’s a Vietnamese place in my local shopping centre food court that do a awesome crispy pork, chicken or combo Banhi Mi. It’s made up in 5 minutes or so depending how busy they are and tastes delicious. With chilli of course.
This is awesome, more vids like this please Andy and team 👌
In Melbourne, most of the banhn-mi is th pork belly kind, or sometimes lemongrass chicken. So good. Looking forward to going back to Vietnam in january
REALLY ENJOYED THIS EPISODE!
welcome to Vietnam Andy, hope you have a wonderful trip
Only been watching this channel for about a week but it's amazing!!
O.M.G! So many varieties and I want to try them all. We do get Banh Mi locally here, but only limited varieties. I love the Pate (sandwich butter) and the fresh veg., pickles and peppers. I’d love to try that fish one. The texture of that looked like tofu. Loving this series!
You have to come. There's actually even more varieties for you to try 😂 and another million unique dishes
I have to stop watching Andy in the middle of the night, it makes me wanna eat a 3rd dinner.
Every single one of these sandwiches looks delicious. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks Andy, for the wonderful content to keep me inspired in the kitchen!
