- Oumar Diouf is a Senegalese chef whose culinary career blossomed while working in South America and led him to create The Damel, an Afro-Brazilian food truck he operates in Oakland, California. After realizing he wouldn’t play soccer professionally, Oumar chose to focus on his cooking skills and traveled the world in his pursuit to become a well-rounded chef. The Damel, a Senegalese ruler from Wolof kingdom, is what Oumar chose to represent his contribution to the food world; he is the king of West African cuisine in Oakland and is determined to share his culture with the people in his community, one meal at a time.

The fact that he showed off his success by telling us what he did for his Mom, rather than what he bought for himself says everything you need to know about him. We need more positive energy like that in this world.

Nailed it. So many people trying to get money to flaunt it, even when they aint did nothing to earn money. This guy is legit cool.

As a brazilian it's so cool to see a non-Brazilian making Bahia's moqueca e acarajé. Those are amazing dishes that only a few people outside of Brazil know about.
Acaraje actually came to Brazil via slaves from West Africa where Oumar is from.
Yeah but they do like a side dish and we make like a sandwich
Oumar is a great chef, great person. This video makes me smiles. He deserves all the blessed and success!

This guy is like listening to peak performance. Pro soccer player, multi lingual, international connections, global chef, successful entrepreneur, great Uber driver, strong charisma, super hard worker, and takes care of his family. We need more Oumar in this world. Oakland is lucky to have him.

He is at the top and pulling people at the top, which is not easy, saying that blessings are like the sea, everyone can get their part... wish you the greatest success in each small part of your business 💪🏾😉 thanks from Sénégal 🇸🇳 Diadieuf 🇸🇳
I feel like people don't realize that as immigrants, they bring with them a knowledge of their homelands and gift that knowledge and identity back to those who have lost it or had it eradicated from their people in the states. Through these small every day interactions, there will always be somebody that has had a piece of their lost cultural identity given back to them, and that's beautiful.
Sadly a lot of the culture is slowly being extracted even in homelands due to american culture. I know a lot more about mexico's history and ancient culture than cousins living in Mexico. A lot are more focused on trying to be more american in culture
Just like the slaves that were brought over here did so much and recognized for nothing

Smiled the whole video. He is such a humble brother.
Yes i love Africans they are so humble
inspiring story.
love the Brazil Africa connection!
It’s one of the most interesting things about Brazil, how African influence is part of all culture and almost all Brazilians, especially their music and food! I lived there for 3 years.
That is normal in the Caribbean too, slavery and being a majority does that. Regardless of what race you are in the Caribbean, Afro Caribbean culture is dominant
I love how he picks upthe languages and incorporate cuisines from the countries he travelled into his restaurant showing his strive to continuously learn and take in the experiences from his life journey.
And at the same time he never forgot he came from by sharing his success with the people that were with him at the start of his journey.

This is incredibly inspiring and just makes my heart feel full. What a gentleman and completely selfless individual.
I got to try this earlier in the summer this year. Had a couple of the empanadas, both pretty good, though now I wished I'd tried that Brazilian shrimp situation. It's cool that they came out to East Oakland and the Akoma Market specifically. So often lately when I see things about food and culture in Oakland, it's focused on things meant largely for new Oaklanders, things located in Uptown and Temescal. I appreciated seeing my neighborhood shown not just as place where people are killing each other, but also as a place where people just eat and live and do their thing.
