Somehow one of the guys who wrote the Grinch was one of the guys who wrote Puss In Boots 2. That’s like making a D essay one year, leaving for a few years, and coming back with an A essay.
I have no idea how this studio made an entire film franchise about supervillains and yet they can't even make The Grinch nasty or threatening. That just embarrassing.
You know how Illumination would feel because of the criticism and hate like Buster Moon. Whenever you give Illumination a backlash, it makes them jumped the shark. After Minions: The Rise Of Gru. Chris Meledandri, The CEO and founder of that company said that they're gonna have to change after using the same methods in their flims. He said that you have to honor the stories the movie tell or flimmakers make. The change is risk. The criticism is what made that happened. So months later, they hired Mike Moon, a former head of adult animation for netflix to be their senior creative advisor of their company. They even partnered with him to create a new division called Moonlight. The goal for that new label is "produce animated flims push beyond the family genre". They're actually doing it to stop the hate. Chris said that "We have a exceptionally talented group of artists, filmmakers, and producers at Illumination and believe there's no compliment to this team but Mike and the new company we are partnering to build" "He has exceptional taste, deep experience and a strong vision we intend to make together. I look forward to Mike and Moonlight making a substantial contribution to Illumination's future" He means that Illumination would go worse without Mike Moon and Moonlight. Mike as a senior creative advisor for their movies and the new label, Moonlight, movies for teens and adults would save Illumination's reputation.
Ngl, I'm kind of hoping Despicable Me 4 pulls a Shrek Forever After, where it completely ignores the third film and tells a much better story. Now of course, I'm not asking for masterpiece (that's just ridiculous), I'm asking for something better than DM3.
Animated movies today are so bad compared to the Pixar dream works sony movies of 15 years ago. Movies now seem so lazy the animation is unrealistic and written for just the lowest common denominator
Following up on my last comment my problem with illumination is that as a studio they are just so hit and miss! It’s like when they announce a new movie there’s no guarantee on whether or not it’s gonna be a good movie! And because of this it’s why I really REALLY don’t know what to expect from their next film “migrate”
Illumination has been harmful for 13 years. Mario movie showed that we will only get worse movies now instead of better ones. That new Sailor Moon movie coming up feels better than all of that trash from Universal. Even Bean movie was a better comedy than Illumination stuff.
Imagine a Super Mario movie that touches on more mature topics like death, grief, oppression, identity, etc. That would be so amazing, instead the one coming out I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a bunch of colors, jokes that might and might not land and a very simple story, I mean the games also have a simple story but they have amazing gameplay.
I still find it funny its Nintendo of all folks that will possibly force them to make a movie beyond just ok. I knew Nintendo made them do a heck of a turn around just from the actual new stylized artstyle and lack of trendy music. But we'll see what happens in the end... Even if the Mario movie bangs though, unless they do a "Emoji Movie to Spiderverse" level of turnaround... I DO NOT want them being in charge of all Nintendo movies potentially. I think some of the lighter IPs they could do decently (WITH strong guidance), but things like Zelda & Metroid? They deserve far better.
The mario movie is also arround bad illumination and their Jokes or memes get old absolutely quickly Including the terrible lazy rushed story And uuugh some models are just ugly as hell
Aside from half of the Despicable Me movies, I’m never up for watching any Illumination movie for how much they pender to kids instead of grown ups too. Let’s just hope that the Mario Movie is a banger so they could make more bangers. (Like more Nintendo movies) And also this might be slightly off topic, if Illumination ever makes a movie about Kirby, they better get John Mulaney to voice Magolor or I’m getting a refund. Just kidding I won’t, but I just hope the film is good too if that ever happens.
Mario movie was ruined and a sham by Teen Titans Go directors. Illumination was the wrong studio for it. Also, the animation systems are too damaged while some great works are out there.
After what Illumination did to The Lorax, The Grinch, and Sing, I stopped caring and moved on. Still avoiding the Mario movie after witnessing so many wrongs from it.
Quit bashing on those guys. They already received death threats enough from haters. And besides, they wanted the movie to be different than what they're known for and wanted to be true to the source material. And avoiding it like it's going to go away is a very petty move.😑
True, the Mario movie was average and didn't even come close to the canon, even if it's not something bad. The problem is that it suffered from the same fault as other Illumination's films like Despicable Me 3, that is to say that the film was filled with unnecessary subplots and moved too quickly.
It’s good to hear people say that the biggest problem of illumination is they don’t want to try and the fact of why they win so much money is just because marketing and the fact they are too much safe so that coward parents can say « this movie is safe for my kid » and the fact that illumination have success at box office don’t mean there Movies was good because fun fact box office numbers =/= movies quality
I just don't like how the humor in the movies is usually very cheap, crude, and just falls off. Every now and then its funny, but it is just annoying at this point.
Personally i just saw the Mario Movie, and Migration when the came out. And I thought they were both really good movies. Okay. Granted, Migration wasnt as good as the Super Mario Bros. Movie. But it is still a really solid Illumination film. At least in my opinion
5:21-5:24 This hasn't aged very well considering The Flash dethroned Batman v Superman and Minions. Minions is now #6 on his list of his least favorite movies. P.S: I would like to see you tear apart The Flash. EDIT : Now he considers The Flash worse than Chip n Dale on his least favourite movies list on letterboxd. Give ILLUMINATION and Chip n Dale some credit, they never animated dead people just to get a cheap cheer of the audience.
Illumination's made some movies I consider guilty pleasures, but I just do NOT understand where the praise towards the first Despicable Me is coming from. AT ALL. In my opinion that movie is just plain meh.
Is it wrong that I like Suki, see potential in her as a character of something, and rather her be in a totally different film with a tweaked personality?
My opinions on illumination movies. Despicable me- the best illumination movie imo. Hop-a guilty pleasure and unique. Lorax-underrated. Despicable me 2-not as good as the first. Minion-ok. Pets-a boring kids movie. Sing-refreshing. Despicable me 3-f..king horrible. Grinch-haven’t seen it but don’t want to. Pets 2-not interested. Sing 2-the same as the first. Minions 2-kinda better than the first. Mario-boring as hell. My thoughts on future movies. Migration-I guess Rio wasn’t enough. Despicable me 4-it better be about the girls.

@channelwarrior861 and @wakspacific6928 Lol That's true, and depressing.

as an aspiring animator, I wish I could make something better. :...(
I think it would be a good idea though if they made a minions movie with live action actors in a real world but the minions are still animated
