      @@TheBritishRunner though it’s only touched upon briefly in the lore it would make sense that the Marker would have some form of protective field around it. Think about it for a moment, that artifact is the only thing perpetuating the outbreak, weather with or without the help of a recombinant life form. You also have to take into account how the Necros will target essential systems and bring them down themselves, as seen recently by the scene in the remake, with the whippers lashing at the singularity core in the Kellion. It would equally make sense that the marker would want to protect itself from any unwanted damage amidst the chaos. Maybe it’s just me but after playing through the last mission in DS1 I noticed that the Necros became less aggressive as they approached Issac as he was moving the marker through the colony, not to say they wouldn’t attack him but it seemed like to me they weren’t as urgent as they could be. Could just be a gameplay thing but or It could just be me. But when you really think about it with how ravenous and destructive Necros can be even if for the purposes of self preservation it would make sense for a Marker to have some sort of dormancy field. However I’d be of the mind that the closer you get to the marker the easier it is to influence you as your right next to the source of the influence so it’s not like it would be a safe haven like gram gram says.

      @@azazelsiad3601 Roanoke's theory make's sense; the area around the Marker is a false safety zone, where you feel like the sickness has lessened and the necros don't attack (there's a novel whete the Necros will not enter a certain range around the Marker at all), but in reality what it's doing is suppressing both your immune system and all disease while tinkering with your mind. You feel safer, but all you're doing is being set up for enslavement and death all the quicker.

      I have a feeling it was likely engineered at some point and intended as either an bioweapon or some sort of defence field for an alien civilization.
      First theory means that it was an weapon developed eons ago that went out of control and swallowed their creators before continually spreading and continuing to do so for eternity.
      The second theory might be that some advanced civilization came up at some point previous of the markers being made, it turned very advanced but then it started meeting other advanced alien races and going into wars with them. After getting tired of these wars they developed the Marker and brethren moons as an advanced pre-emptive strike mechanism for any civilizations that might grow advanced enough to develop space faring technology and challenge them.

      My theory is the Black Marker was a device created by the first ancestral race (that pioneered civilization) in the universe billion years ago powerful enough to terraform / transform any planet to be able to sustain any life form, not some sort of weapon. But, these thing came at the cost of massive amount of energy needed to do their work, so they created the First Brethren Moon, the ultimate life form. The first ancestral race collected sample of creatures across the universe, combine and refine them until became the form we know. At first, things work really well. The Brethren Moon supply the massive amount of energy required by the Black Marker to do it's job properly as their creator intended. However, the first ancestral race left the Brethren Moon unchecked without purpose after the process of transforming the planet done (bear in mind that this process take million of year). The First Brethren Moon came to the conclusion that it needs new purpose for existing, which is to transform other life being to become the form and flesh intended in order to spawn few Brethren Moon to power up more Black Marker across the universe.

    I think the hallucinations that tell people to not do convergence or hide away the marker or not go thru with what they're doing. I think it only happen in certain few humans with strong willpower or mental resilience, and that these helpful hallucinations are the "human" or "good" part of themselves that's fighting back, trying to get them to stop doing what the marker does.

    Wouldn't the recombinant microorganism and the marker radiation two sides of the same coin? Like the way an infector can rapidly dispatch and change a person into a slasher seems like it's a bit more efficient than just the marker's radiation slowly altering a corpse by itself. It would make sense that the marker would attack from multiple fronts in this way in order to maximize efficiency, the same way it uses coercion and outright deception to get what it wants through mental manipulation.

    • @DerDrecksack87
      @DerDrecksack87 10 месяцев назад +3

      I think the marker doesn't need anything except dead tissue, in DS3 it reanimated every dead body at the same time when containment was breached, the infectors/hallucinations & indoctrination is a slower but much safer way for a marker to start a necro outbreak, if it just sends the massive reanimation signal it would be clearly identified as the source and could be destroyed before it reaches its goals. The slow & subliminal way it starts with the first necros & infectors most civilisations would first think that its an alien invasion or some new plague, when they realise that the marker is the source, its already too late for them. In DS3 the Volantians built hundreds if not thousands of markers before the markers started their mind games & went all in with an outbreak and later on the convergence, so they either have a will on their own or the brethren moons know everything the marker can see and dictate its behaviour as it is a conduit to them, or a mix of both.

    Very interesting. Damn Dead Space always had a amazing lore.

  • @XxTaiMTxX
    @XxTaiMTxX Год назад +15

    My understanding of the markers was this:
    1. The red marker wasn't just "cosmetic". It was somehow altered or defective in some way. Earthgov had likely "understood" the original market enough that by the time they could create their own and experiment with it on Aegist 7, that they knew about the properties of the outbreak, so tried to limit it. It's why we see that the "dead space" around the markers only exists on the ones that EarthGov has built. Whereas there was no "Dead Zone" around the original.
    2. The marker takes all "dead tissue" and doesn't care what it is. It alters it JUST ENOUGH to be useful to its purposes. It's why I think there's "The Leviathan" in Food Storage on the Ishimura... all that food is technically "Dead" and just sitting there, ready to be converted into a very large biomass. It would also explain the random growths on walls and such everywhere as people frequently leave "dead skin cells" everywhere they live for prolonged periods of time. I think this function is also how it "slowly infects" people. Small bits of you die every single day and are expelled from your body as waste. But, what if there was a signal that turns every single dead cell into a piece of Necromorph? Inside your body? Which would explain why the "changes are slow". It might even explain how the brain is being altered as well... headaches can be symptoms of brain cells dying... or ruptured blood vessels. The marker Signal turns dead tissue into Necromorph Tissue...
    3. The hallucinations are actually a form of brain damage coupled with the information the marker is giving each individual cell. As of yet, we don't know whether or not OTHER SPECIES have these hallucinations, or if it is unique to humanity. We see no evidence of "in fighting" what-so-ever on Tau Volantis. On top of which, that alien species, in the midst of a massive outbreak, was able to construct a HUGE weather control machine, which must have cost thousands of man-hours to build, lots of their best and brightest to work things out, and a very long time to put it all together while holding off the Necromorphs. We see how fast they spread on the Ishimura. We see how fast they spread on The Sprawl. Tau Volantis was the only planet those aliens had. They never made it into space. It is likely their boosts to Stasis and Kinesis were a result of them only able to live on their planet and a dwindling population from the Necromorphs. They had to move much larger masses with fewer people and move them much farther, so they had to improve Stasis and Kinesis to get the job done. Lets also not forget that it "came down to the wire". The machine was activated at the MOMENT of convergence. At the HEART of convergence, no less. Which means, everyone else was probably already lost. For them, it very well could be that they were fighting a typical zombie outbreak, rather than what humans face. For them, it might have been as simple as "the dead coming back to life" and no mental repercussions what-so-ever. There's actually plenty of evidence to support that this is what happened. But humanity? As our brain cells die, they might get flooded with the information from the Marker, and this is a "slow realization" to us. We then either "embrace" this information, or we reject it out of self-preservation. The "Hallucinations" may not actually be the marker "talking" to us, but just our own interpretation of the signal broadcast to us. It probably also explains why "the smart people can build new markers" and "the dumb ones go insane". The smart ones are capable of parsing the data and separating it from their mind. The dumb ones can't understand the information at all and only get general broad strokes of what is happening to them.
    4. The "dual voices" makes complete sense. Even if they're never mentioned again. The markers seem to "present a choice" to everyone. Only those who build a marker can destroy it. But, they must "go through all the steps" to be able to do either of those things. I don't think these were "retconned" all that much, or all that hard. I think the "dual voices" was really just the "one voice", but the species it acted on needed to make the choice. Preserve their own species in a galaxy devoid of resources and love... or submit to the marker and "make us whole". The markers lure in civilizations with the "unlimited energy" they produce. What sort of civilization needs a marker to do that, except one that is basically in a state of "circling the drain" from lack of resources, over population, and all the societal and personal stresses that brings about? Hence, why they go "active" at that point. Because, at that point, there are people who would listen to The Marker. People it could CONVINCE. Isaac even hears the "dual voices" in the second game. Nicole is sometimes mean and terrible to him... and sometimes kind and caring. It is only when he "resolves to see it through to the end" that Nicole becomes genuinely comforting to him. She leads him over to the Marker and "attempts to make him" start Convergence. But, he comes to his senses immediately. He makes the choice right then and there and has to destroy the Marker. So, he does. Once he has made this choice, his body is now "immune" to the signal somehow (hence why he has no hallucinations in Dead Space 3, or at least, I don't remember him ever having any, though I did not play the DLC, and I did play as Carver with a friend and I don't recall ever having my friend try to show me things I couldn't see, while I was constantly trying to show him things he couldn't see).
    5. The markers seem to be intended to "seed life" on barren planets in order to create sentients that can then be turned into "Bretheren Moons". In essence, they are "galactic sperm, landing on potential eggs". It might even be that "dead Bretheren Moons" actually become the habital planets life is seeded upon. Earth might be the corpse of a long dead Moon, seeded with the potential to create new life and new moons. My personal guess is that the Markers are little more than a strand of DNA being shot around and built on a galactic scale, with each civilization being nothing more than "new cells" to create them. That we live upon the husks of much larger organisms. That we are the cells of said organisms. Created and destroyed to propagate the life of the organism we live upon.
    Anyway, that's my understanding of how the Markers work as well as their goals. Just based on what limited media I've interacted with, this is what I could piece together of the LIKELY intentions of the story and the writers on staff. But, they might have "dumbed it down" for the sake of appealing to an audience.

Such as a dead planet on the edge of the known universe showing plans of an insane engineer or scientist who wanted to achieve immortality or to control everything or creating the markers as a tool to drive an enemy species against themselves by driving them insane but back fired on the creators. I like the idea of humans developing genetic/mental defenses as we evolve combating the Markers influence. Their might be a point where if intelligent lifeforms become strong enough mentally the marker has a harder time spreading. This might be why the marker springs up cults to kill anyone who resists more effectively then Necromorphs. Overtime Isaac does develop far better resistance to the markers influence by the 2nd game which allows him to destroy it from within.

    I wouldnt have liked it at all if they went the halo route. Instead they went kinda to the direction of Mass Effect or at least how mass effect should have been. A scary solution to the fermi paradox.
    The moons do say "you can kill the prophet but you cannot kill the god" and they still say "make us whole". Somewhat lovecrafty. So there is a bigger entity the moons or markers refer as god or maybe they refer to themselves as the god, which is really weird.
    Im not a writer but I dont know how one would make this into a scarier thing. I guess it wouldnt make sense to reveal who or what are the markers. Mass effect did that with the Reapers and it was bad. I would have prefered at least hints that markers and the moons are way beyond imagination for humans. Maybe finding a planet full of markers but no life, except these markers are natural rock formations. Sort of like there is an entity shaping rock to its will.
    Imho, flesh can be uncanny. Even rock being uncanny is very scary in my eyes.

    After diving back into the games, comics and animation I can gather that the civilisation that made the markers wanted immortal life, they found a way to reanimated tissue but underestimated the true power of what they had formed, they would have started small and ended up with the first marker causing mass death and wiping out all information holders as to why and what happened. The people that died with the first marker must of had some psychic powers which would explain how the marker can reach into the heads of those around it, and the last psychic thoughts and feels being projected would of been painful horrific deaths, these would be the visions they inflict on new victims

    The only part I don't agree with is that markers rebroadcast a signal rather than create it themselves. Well, to broadcast signal, you have to receive it, right? Were there signs of such receiving other than one note hypothesizing on it? I think not. Markers demonstrate independent behavior, they act and react depending on circumstances, that hardly can be seen as being just a transmitter. The most appropriate term for it, as I said here already, is "seed". Very advanced seed.

      The Marker even in the first game echoes the Unitologists' beliefs of unity and becoming "one". Hence the Marker wanted them to "take it home" as put by Dr Kyne. The writers didn't put much thought into it beyond that.

    Personal theory, though I got nothing for the originators of the Marker itself, the process moves in a cycle that rolls for hundreds of thousands of years (wake up, eat, go to sleep), and stalled with the last alien race, giving humanity time to spread further than most.
    Black Markers: Made in abundance, strewn through-out the galaxy, ment to guide life into sentience, or from sentience into intelligence to build more markers
    Red Markers: Markers made by humans that were altered by the black marker. Perhaps the red is in connection to our blood?
    Any other color of marker: Made by a different alien race, from a different seeding of life and awakening of the brethren moon. It's why/how there can be multiple ones of them.

      After consuming pretty much all DS related media, i highly doubt the sigma grindset of the brethren moons ever goes dormant, they don't send the markers out to hit a planet that might be supportive of life just by chance, they have an atleast rough idea where to send them & where the markers could kickstart evolution. When they absorb a civilisation they get all their collective knowledge, including surveys for inhabitable planets, similar as NASA does it right now and the moons will use it as an indicator to where the next harvest might come from, this is an ongoing process as one civilisation gets devoured another one might just have reached their industrial age and another few have just mastered fire & agriculture while others have might just emerged from the lovest evolutionary form. This way when a civilisation is "ripe" to be harvested and start building markers because of their juicy overpopulation, the moons spread out trough the galaxy like a fishing net (their network) picks up on the convergence and swoops in calling its buddies for dinner & to welcome the new moon.
      The size of the creatures seems dependant on the native life, in DS3 the standard Volantian necros are as big as brutes in DS1&2.

    Remember how only certain people are given visions of marker creation like Isaac? The markers can see the mental makeup of the people it effects. The helpful and harmful visions aren't an inconsistency. The marker is telling people what they need to hear to manipulate them into doing what it wants. Even if those orders seem counterintuitive. How else would people who'd never (in their living moments) been exposed to the markers like people's dead relatives, know what Convergence is? Unless they were all Unitologists, which is exceedingly unlikely.

    This surprised me while I was watching stalker lore vids...I missed the notification I guess. Had to pause that shit, cause the markers interest me. more than any other aspect I think...I was a nerdy ass teenager but Ive always been a bit obsessed w Kubrick..(I see I was a pretentious little shit as well, having put this in writing) but 2001 space odyssey always had something else...something more existential and maybe even basal in some way for me perseonally...and this is entirely due to the Monolith scaring the fuck out of me. Even so, Imo its one of the most fascinating concepts to have ever been written about. Clarke is a fantastic author as well....if any of you guys are fascinated by the marker specifically, you'll probably love the book series too. Hugely different plot obviously but the monolith apparently can trigger evolution to advance very quickly, maybe instant in some cases...and its absolutely artificial in every sense...origins and intended use are initially unclear...but its very very threatening somehow. im rambling but check it out !

      It may just be a way to get people to become overprotective of the Marker, thus increasing tension and mistrust within the colony. We see this in the prequel comic as one of the people guarding the Marker becomes aggressive when told they're being replaced, rants about how "they want to hurt it" and then murders their colleague.

      I think it may be a clue that ghosts may indeed be real in the Dead Space universe. To add to that, humanity is among many other creations of the Necromorphs' rivals who have been experimenting with psychic potential. I imagine the key to defeating the Necromorphs might involve fully unlocking humanity's psychic/spiritual potential, but in the process that may unleash other supernatural threats that are harder to stop. Maybe humanity's creators will decide to 'ascend' humanity once they prove their worthiness in defeating the Necromorphs, and we have a 'god AND devil are both evil' situation. I'm sure there's a way to shoehorn some sci-fi technobabble into rationalizing magic.

    A very well done video! its been a long time since i played through the games, and i never did get a clear grasp on how the makers worked, and the why(s) of the story. with the remake on the Horizon, i have found this franchise increasingly on my mind, and now, i know why it seemed like the story was inconsistent. it is. I actually recall when i played the first game going, O'! they are the flood", so i cant say they were wrong to feel that people would make that connection, but things would have been nicer if they had either been open about the soft rewrite, or fabricated a reason for it.
    I have never been fan of "Aliens created us " stories, (just my personal opinion, i don't mean anything by it) and have to admit, when they started to talk about that in the games, i was REALLY hoping it was a red herring, but I have to admit, i think you outlined not only the in game evidence for it, but justified it well enough, that I have to say it all makes good sense.
    When i first played through, i thought the fact that details didn't line up were planned, as a way of showing you how effectively the Markers can warp how people perceive reality. I didn't know however, about the two alien races being at war. Once you said it, I realized that, that must be the heart of the retcon, i wonder if the remake will start of without it, or include that kinda abandoned plot line.

      I think Dead Space 3 really captured a sense of humanity's cosmic insignificance by doing the opposite of Prometheus' obnoxious anthropocentrism. In DS3 one among countless other Markers hit a random planet, and it was by coincidence that the creatures that would eventually enact the Marker's goal of awakening the Moons happened to be the distant descendants of some shrews that were around when the dinosaurs got nuked. The fate of Tau Volantis only underscores that they and humanity were just casualties in an incomprehensibly vast cycle of genocide.
      Whereas Prometheus had humans made in God's image and strongly implies that God wants to kill humans because they lynched Jesus (and then revealing that the Xenomorphs were the product of a vengeful human robot), the Necromorphs are simply timeless, hungry and apathetic. The latter feels much more intimidating while the former plays into an overinflated sense of self-importance.

    The recombinant lifeform doesn't need to be constantly mentioned as it is present in all games and midea, just for the sake of player, viewer, and reader not feeling board by a concept. if you pay attention, some of the lore and general background indicates that some form of the corruption/recombinant lifeform is constantly present if not directly mentioned. DS1 had the lifeform from experiments that were performed which allowed for the bacteria to be present for all DS1 sub midea. DS2 mentions the sludge, and as for the claim that the marker is doing it that is true but it is using the bacteria and corruption as its weapons. all of the sub media linked to DS2 and leading into DS3 submit to given concept that this is an Infection not an assimilation process. The concept of Good & Evil, right and wrong. is NOT a matter of perspective, or a human invention. Nature have made you a moral compas, people refine that, and religion perfects it. For that reason it is commonly known as a human concept. So yeah, when a marker kills your species, turns them insane and reanimates them horrificly. That is pretty darn evil, yes by human definition, but you're human, so there is no reason to take the markers in defense. But seeing as they're machines or enchanted pillars, they're as evil as a toaster to which you put in your hand. Anti-human necro-romantic.

Its evil to the ones it pursues yes that is correct. But when looking at it from an objective standpoint no they aren't that was my point. I wasn't defending the markers or necromorphes I was simply pointing out a fact from a different perspective. Also good and evil is entirely about perspective, do you really think that people who are classed or were classed as evil really know they are no one ever thinks of themselves as the villain everyone always tells themselves the lie that they are good even when they aren't.

So being the Marker in 1 was legit cut apart and was in the middle of Convergence when it was stopped that means the Marker would want to make itself whole as if it wasn't then convergence wouldn't happen. This also explains why the Marker attacks him after he leaves. As because of him the Marker gets destroyed ended its connection to the chain failing its purpose. Isaac was no longer a tool it could use to fix itself but instead could be used to make more Infecting him with the Markers code.

    The main reason why I am pushing the idea of the marker being made if biomass with the consciousness of other living species trapped inside is because it can explain why the marker drives some people insane to kill, while it manipulates more intelligent people to build more markers similar to how a cult manipulates people, but attempts to warn other people of the danger the marker brings. Because it's the consciousness of individuals breaking through to some people warning them. As the for the energy part scientists have proven the human body is constantly producing different styles of energy such as Heat Energy, Organic Electro magnetic pulses(brain sending signals to the body) and many kinds if chemical energy such as fast twitch muscles reacting, digestion etc. So would it make sense that an alien species that is scientificly advanced and has exhausted their natural resources would find a way to convert living beings into an unlimited power source, reduce their population but because of their desperation and haste created the markers but did fully understand what would happen.

    Hmm, my understanding was the signal animates bacteria (power source) that cause the corruption. Also I think it is undeniable the red marker IS flawed relative to the black.

    Considering the narrative lead / lore creator has already explained all of this, this video is pretty diluted.
    There's not a lot up for interpretation in reference to the markers. I believe the exact quote is the marker produces "builders and fodder"
    The intelligent portion of a host race is manipulated into producing more markers.
    The fodder are just bodies, people driven insane to produce more bodies to help fuel convergence, which is unequivocally the formation of a brethren moon.
    The apparitions that speak against the marker are only experienced by a small handful of the population described as a "white blood cell response" to the markers from a host species.
    My guy your lore is all over the place and not accurate...
    Unitology is the result of the builder side, this is why every species that is ever encountered the markers has a sect of their species that builds and worships markers...

    With so much thought towards research and painstakingly theory-crafting about Dead Space, I wonder what 'TheBritishRunner' thinks of the biology-theory videos made RoanokeGaming?

    0:42 "I also stated i did not read the books" Not that the books matter in the slightest. They are all pretty much fanfiction written by multiple different authors, non of whom had anything thing to do with the story development of the games. With that said its hard to make sense of a lot the DS lore because its been retconned every single game. Which if you read up the history of EA Redwood Shores / Visercal it becomes slightly more obvious why.

    There's definitely a lore inconsistency in regards to the markers:
    To me it is still unclear if those artifacts alone make necromorphs like in the second movie or if an infection needs a specific source like portrayed in dead space 1 (infection caused by setting free the hive mind due to mining on eagis7).
    The remake definitely has to make things more clear.

    • @TheBritishRunner

      So you say the developers who say the marker reanimates corpses into necromorphs are wrong???

    • @TheBritishRunner
      @TheBritishRunner  2 года назад

      @@nihilityjoey So because one thing was incorrect slightly the entire source is to be deemed to be fake? What about the other two sources that I showed you? Let me guess they were to be ignored aswell because not in line with your interpretation. Your recombinant theory is just a theory nothing more as there are logs that detail the marker reanimating the corpses into necromorphs and none that state otherwise in the sequel games. The fact you choose to ignore them is startling lol.

    • @TheBritishRunner
      @TheBritishRunner  2 года назад

      @@nihilityjoey Your entire comment is not worth reading after seeing "You are claiming stuff, yet not providing proof" maybe watch the video for the proof where I actually tell you where you can find the logs I reference as I do state which is which. The only reason you can't find the logs that tell you these things is because you ignore them along with anything that proves you wrong instead you constantly reach out to grab things that aren't there or twist them to suit your narrative. Yes some of the things you state are factual but the rest aren't.

    • @TheBritishRunner
      @TheBritishRunner  2 года назад +1

      @@nihilityjoey You say dead space 3 puts the recombinant life form back into the series but yet there's no mention of it. There is no evidence after dead space salvage that suggests a life form recombinates the dead into necromorphs. Hell I'd even suggest that little theory you have there is based off of thinking the corruption and recombinant life form is the same entity. Which hasn't been confirmed. I'm going off of what is mentioned in the media. And the media doesn't talk about what you think, after salvage. You have your opinions but yet no source material in salvage or afterwards that suggests what you say is correct. As I certainly didn't see any lines of dialogue or logs or quotes in the book about this life form.

    why can't the markers do both? say the markers have a microorganism that it spreads out via the air, water etc. and it does that until it detects something from corpses withing x area around it then it starts releasing the signal for the microorganism to grow x forms to spread and produce more of the microorganisms with infectors, slashers, the bio growth, etc. like slashers to make corpses and infectors to make more slashers, etc. i mean if it was canon at one point it still canon otherwise people would not be arguing over it as much.... maybe. but everyone has their own opinion.

    • @TheBritishRunner
      @TheBritishRunner  2 года назад +1

      Because the developers and writers confirmed it already sources are in the description along with that the logs don't talk about both scenarios being factual they instead point to the marker as the root cause for everything.

    What drives me nuts is what EA did at the end of the series. If you wanted the “true” ending you would had to buy the Marker Edition of Dead Space 3. It was $120 and only could be pre-ordered at EA website and no where else.
    It contained:
    A 6’ tall mini Marker
    A small 8oz reusable water bottle that looked like a small Health pack
    A book with concept art
    2 posters
    A Dead Space style note book
    Dead Space game
    10 different pre order bonus equipments
    Lastly Early access to all 4 DLC
    (1) Awakened
    (2) Severed Moon
    (3) Freedom of Madness
    (4) Fermi Paradox
    Once EA got annoyed that it could not make money from micro transactions because of fans feedback, they decided not to release all DLC.
    Also if you try to play the other DLC’s on Live Streaming system, EA will sent notices to your accounts or even sue you.
    What’s worse is the details are banned from non EA companies and contents providers. Basically the Dead Space Wikipedia pages are censored for “copyright” issues.
    I am very happy that one of my friends purchased this and other games highest cost editions.
    Did you know the Europeans legendary edition of Residents Evil Village came with a working Type writer from the game instead of a giant Chris statue?
