Ray Charles isn't the King Of Soul-he is SOUL-he is America-he's the greatest that ever was and will ever be. If America needs to come together, it should be over
the great Ray Charles. We should all be able to agree on that.
I won't lie, I cried through this whole thing. I really miss the way our world used to be. It's sad how it has changed. God Shed His Grace on Thee.
Mr. Ray Charles is THE GOAT !!! He is sorely missed !!
This World Series took place exactly seven weeks after 9/11 and had everything - The tattered and torn American flag recovered from the wreckage at Ground Zero, which had been used at funerals of fallen Port Authority police officers after the attacks, was flown over Yankee Stadium during the series. President Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch of Game 3 in Yankee Stadium, not far from Ground Zero where the ruins of the World Trade Center were still burning. He wore a Kevlar vest under an FDNY jacket for what would become arguably the most famous first pitch in history. That first pitch was symbolic. Bush walked to the pitcher's mound, alone, unescorted ... though snipers were stationed among the light and Secret Service agents were on the field. He didn't step forward to shorten the distance. He wound up and threw a strike and the crowd exploded in cheers and chants of "U-S-A!" The Yankees represented NY City and was a remarkable boost in morale for the fatigued city. Most importantly, there were questions at the time. Could you even play a game like this? The World Series was one of the most visible sporting events in the nation and baseball is literally "America's pastime." What better target would there be for another attack? Would it be safe? Security would be tight...but yes, it would be played. So what happened?? We had a World Series that is considered one of the greatest of all time (two extra-inning games and three late-inning comebacks). In the final game, the Yankees led in the ninth inning before the Diamondbacks staged a comeback against the greatest closer in MLB history, Mariano Rivera (the only player to ever be elected to the Hall of Fame unanimously), capped off by a walk-off, bases-loaded bloop single by Luis Gonzalez to clinch Arizona's championship victory in only their fourth season as a franchise.
You captured that feeling of anxiety so well. We didn’t know if we could gather in large groups, or if or how we could be safe if we did. We didn’t know our fears should be IF we were attacked again or WHEN. There was such a feeling of anxiety in our lives.
Then to hear Ray Charles sing that song. An ode to America, sure, but a song about faith. Faith that “God done shed His grace on thee”, and that “He crowned thy good (He told me He would) with brotherhood.”
Whether you’re a religious or spiritual person or not, the optimism in that song and the way he sang it is contagious, and it really lifted up the spirits of so many of us.
You captured the moment well.
We were United back then . 😢
I have no idea how Ray was able to sing so far behind the melody. It's amazing. He's amazing. This was amazing. ❤🗽
Yes. You are not going to match his phrasing
Ray Charles helped heal and unite a hurting nation that night right after 9-11.
Many in the crowd were in tears due to the fresh memories of the attack. You can feel it when watching.
My absolute favorite version of this song.
Ray Charles was an American treasure.
❤ Ray Charles ❤
Willie Nelson's best friend...
Nobody and I mean nobody could sing it like he sung it. His performance of America has no equal
This makes me emotional, I miss him and his amazing voice!!! I remember listening to this live. Thanks for the reaction!!!
This was very soon after 9/11, performed at Yankee Stadium; it was the first time after the terror attacks where a large crowd gathered in one place. His other performance (very popular on RUclips) is also legendary - and I love some of his ad-libs and his subtle lyric changes in there. You’ve got to listen to it!
Man of greatness. When he sings I tear up.
This version brings the tears every time. Every. Time.
I watched a special about the recording of the "We are the World" song, and they had all the biggest stars. It was mentioned that nobody wanted to sing the part after Ray, because he was that good!
Ray Charles was such a phenomenal artist. He could sing R&B blues country and they gave him a little static is recording artist and stuff when he started mixing a little country and with his music they didn’t like it but it was very very successful you one in a lifetime singer, he was just, whatever he did was just simply great
When it was still ok to love America !!!
We all should be this patriotic
Not blindly...we should be patriotic toward each other or it means nothing...
Yes, always not just cause something happened. But sometimes that's what it takes. God bless you all.
Some people are going to bitch that it wasn't the studio version...Forget them, this was just as good and in some ways, better! Thanks for sharing!
This is better.
Watching Ray help heal and unite a nation was epic!
Not only was Ray the best male singer ever I can't wrap my mind around anyone being better. And to have him and Aretha around at the same time brings a smile to my face.
One of the local TV stations in STL used to play this before signing off
Ray Charles did a fantastic job singing, what's considered to be our unofficial national anthem AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL. But ever wonder how a person could sing our national anthem in a P.D.C. Way. Then check out Marvin Gaye's version of our national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. Great reaction.
A true legend ! God truly blessed us when he brought this man into the world !! Once again a great reaction Britt
My favorite version of this song. Ray Charles was an inspiration and so missed. ❤
A Legend. Miss him
If you haven't heard it, check out Ray singing GEORGIA. Amazing! Also, another great soulful tune is RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA, by Brook Benton! Thanx for another great response, Britt! ❤😊❤🎉😊
He was special indeed, very special.
Within the music industry, other singers didnt refer to him as Ray Charles, they called him The Genius, for a reason, his understanding of music transcends what most other people call "music".
I love everything about his singing. Just everything and what a great treatment of that. And yes you are thinking of the World Series of baseball.
Gotta ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Great Ray Charles! An absolute one of a kind! ❤😁👍 You're getting there Britt, we all love watching your reaction vids. Keep them coming! (By the way, it's called the "World Series") 😁👍
The best EVER. Such a wonder voice, great songwriter, innovator, great mind for the business, and loved this country.
Ray was a Baaaaaaaaaaad Man.....LUV LUV
Indeed
Ray could sing a Toothpaste Jingle and make it a hit.
Or at least a Pepsi commercial.... 😊 Uh huh
Ray is the best...no two ways about it. I've always loved how he switched the verses around. His emotional impact and delivery is unmatched!!!!
I miss Ray Charles!😢 He was and still is inspirational.
Chills
Honest to goodness...this brought tears to my eyes.
American GOLD.
ICON💯💯💯💯💯
I love anything Ray sings!
Ray was the first concert I ever saw it was 1964 I belive and it was great
Incredible!
Pure class
Literally!
Peace, Love!!
Superbowl of baseball. Basahhhaaa. Ray was a masterful artist, universally loved. The mans voice brings joy!
This is my favorite version!
The man, the myth, the legend. There will never be another like him in our lifetimes.
I remember some people being outraged by Ray’s version of this song. He is the first artist I recall singing a National Anthem in his own style. And then it became popular! No one wants to sing the Anthems straight any
more. Ray took us to church!
When I'm in LA I go visit him in Inglewood. Along with Etta James Sugar Ray Robinson too. Inglewood Cemetery on Florence.
Love his voice one of the greatest of all time's. Still listening to his music today and I just turned 55
The LEGENDARY Iconic Mr Ray Charles aka Brother Ray
Brit, I'm not sure if anyone has told you yet but Mr. Ray Charles and Billy Joel have a song together. It's called Baby Grand. If you want to check it out ☮️❤️
Classic !
Oh man, this song brings back memories. In high school, my summer job was in a small town where the local radio station turned off at midnight, and this was the last song they played every night. Sometimes I would stay up til midnight just to hear it.
In college I got the opportunity to see him in concert, and it was amazing. He was so old he hobbled up to the piano, but when he started playing it was magic. His voice was just as pure and wonderful as any recording I've ever heard of him in his younger years. I feel so blessed to have been able to see this legend in person.
If Ren isn't inducted into the PDC yet, he will be by the time u r done hearing his newest track... it's pure soulful magic!!
NO ONE SANG THIS LIKE RAY, EVER ........AND NEVER
I get chills everytime I hear Ray Charles Robinson sing this song. No one sings it better ever.
Aretha Franklin introduced him as the "Right Reverend Ray," in Live at Fillmore West, during outro to 'Spirit In The Dark.'*
Thank you for this & previous, "The Star Spangled Banner - Like You Never Heard It". The lost 2 generations should heard both! America's coming back! Now, a request...? Sgt. Barry Sadler's - Ballad Of The Green Berets"... This ol'man's generation would appreciate you getting it out there too... .
I never heard anyone sing it better
I was at that game as a Yankee die hard from Jersey... I like when you where their hat!!
He was amazing
"The Superbowl of baseball." I'm still laughing....😂
If there's a better version of this song, I haven't heard it, and I've been listening to music for over seventy years.
We all needed Ray Charles at this time.
Ray was simply incredible! God Bless and thank you God for blessing us with this man. Amen.
We agree!
Very nice!!!
Bonnie Raitt: Can't make U love if U don't.True Dat.
Mr Charles could turn a two minute song into a ten minute song - and that was not long enough. I saw two of his concerts around 1999 - he was awesome.
Hahahaha!!!!! "What's the Super Bowl of baseball?" hahahhaha!!!!
always, more Ray is always welcome. A good follow up would be Ray Charles - "What'd I Say " --some young Ray
Back in the day, there was none better than Rachel and B.B. King. BB was a legend all of his own. He’s a good man.
Hey man! It's Ray Charles!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍🤘🤘
Wow....have never been disappointed with RC's version of this.
He sings it the best, Mark Levine signs off his broadcast with Ray Charles American. This is the greatest.
A man and his soul was the title of one of his albums, I believe double album, was gold with a silhouette of Ray’s head🎶🎶🎶
One of his most legendary songs
100%
Britt, marleybob has explained the situation at the time perfectly. We were all still holding our breath after 9/11.
National Treasure!! Actually, just Human Treasure!!
Not going to yell at you🎶🎶🎶
Ray Charles and Willie Nelson were the best ever at singing behind the beat, and when they sang together……….magic!!!
They sang this song together along with several others. Check them out doing Georgia On My Mind and Seven Spanish Angels. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I'm yelling at my computer "WORLD SERIES, WORLD SERIES!" Lol
I recommend reviewing his performance of “Shake A Tail Feather” in the movie “The Blues Brothers” a great performance that justifies Dan Aykroyd’s appearance in the “We Are The World” video.
I could listen to Ray all day long he's that good. Just like Elvis, Neil Dimond, Kenny Rogers, Cat Stevens, Dolly Parton, well you get the picture.
Ray was a player. Straight up player. lol
Ray is awesome. If you get the chance ck out Michael Grimm live singing this song on Huckabee.
World Series
👏👏👏👏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤❤❤❤
Without a Ray Charles sang the best version of this song bar none!
I realize this wasn't the National Anthem but still there wasn't anyone kneeling!!!!!!!!!
If you want a musical joygasim try Billy Joel/Ray Charles colab "Baby Grand"
You should check out ,old violin, by johnny paycheck. I love that sing it makes me hurt in a good way
Please react to Marvin Gaye singing the Star Spangled Banner at the 1983 NBA all star game. He might be the first inducted into the PDC for singing our national anthem! 🇺🇸
You have to react to Georgia on my kind. Wow
World Series👀👀
The World Series is the Super Bowl of Baseball.
