Leon was a mentor to Elton. Read up on that story - a special relationship. And one that seemed unlikely at the time - a trained pianist from Oklahoma and an eccentric pianist from the UK. Different perspectives, different piano styles. Elton said in an interview that he didn’t think he would have survived without Leon’s friendship and support.

1972 - The Carpenters used the song for the name of their hit album A Song for You, and included it as the first track and the last track (in the form of a reprise). The Carpenters took Leon Russell's lyrical idea and expanded it to frame their whole album as a concept album.[9] Though the song itself was not released as a single by the Carpenters, they performed it on a Bob Hope television special that aired on October 5, 1972.[10][11] Their version is considered a standard of adult contemporary music

This song is all Leon Russel, even the piano part that Ray played. He played it true to Leon's original. I first saw Leon Russel with Elton John together on tv back in the late '60s. as up-and-coming piano player singers. It was either on the Merv Griffin or Mike Douglas show. Elton John later helped resurrect his career in 2010 with a collaboration album. I also saw him live at Filmore West and again at Winterland in 1970 when he played with Joe Cocker on his Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. I love his "Will O' the Wisp" album, especially the song "Back to the Island".

Britt, if you never heard of Donny Hathaway are you in for a treat, he's right up your lane, dead center! You have got to react to this one! A Song for You" is a song written and originally recorded by rock singer and pianist Leon Russell for his first solo album Leon Russell, which was released in 1970 on Shelter Records. A slow, pained plea for forgiveness and understanding from an estranged lover, the tune is one of Russell's best-known compositions. Russell sang, played piano, and played tenor horn on the recording. It has been performed and recorded by over 200 artists, spanning many musical genres. The Encyclopedia of Country Music, 2012: "In 1970 Russell released his self-titled debut solo album, including such enduring songs as 'Delta Lady' and 'A Song for You,' both written for versatile vocalist Rita Coolidge.

These guys are obviously young here as this rendition was released in 1970. The Oklahoma guys who played with Leon and Joe Cocker are all over seventies records

legend is that leon and willy knew ray was ill, so each did a verse and then turned over the stage to ray. Leon Russell wrote a great song. You got it, I believe it is a chance to let Ray take a bow still at his best. Being a big Simon and Garfunkel fan there is a duet of Paul Simon and Willie Nelson doing Paul Simon's "Homeward Bound" as a duet, as a nod to a flip side of Willie's "On the Road Again".

Other notable versions were recorded by the Carpenters in 1972 and Herbie Hancock in 2005.

My own story goes back to 1976, met Leon and all the Shelter people at the bar at the Hilton in West Springfield, Mass. What a night! We were all up until 5am, smoked some, crashed an all-night diner, etc etc. Luckily, I was young then and recovered quickly.

I’ve always felt Willie’s voice is very specific and unique, and has his own style. Check out his song “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground” and “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain” The song “Always On My Mind” which was written and recorded by Willie and also recorded by Elvis Presley to me sound like two completely different songs, not because of the singers different styles, but Willie’s voice just makes a song sound so original to him no matter what it is.

i read somewhere that Ray had informed Willie of his stage 4 cancer just before they went on stage. They said Willie couldn't hold back his emotions.

If you notice the sad look Willie gives Ray when Ray starts singing us because Willie knew Ray was dying

Not sure anyone commented, but Willie knew this was his last ever performance with Ray. He knew the cancer was going to take him before they could play together again after a very long friendship of love and admiration for each other and it’s why Willie was emotional.

"rocksteady" is also a good one from Remy Shand ! this record of his is 20 years old, and he was 23 then. he ended up on the Motown label, but it was ahead or behind its time or something... youll will want to hear reny shands entire album when you hear one song

So this was a celebration of Willie’s 70th birthday. This is Leon’s song but Ray’s portion just moves your soul and brings you to tears. This was his gift. He left us the next year. ❤

Britt, you give unusually articulate and imaginative reactions. I normally watch reaction videos to enjoy performances i love with someone else who seems to feel the same way. Once in a while i learn something about music. But your reactions are like being in an inspiring English or Art class. From the little bit i’ve seen, you just seem to have a unique take on things.

Leon wrote it and first recorded it. Ray recorded it and I know I've heard Willy sing it with Ray but I don't know if they recorded it together. But THIS always moves me to tears just seeing how happy it makes Ray to sing it and how much it moves Willie to hear him sing it. This was at Willie's 60th (I think) Birthday celebration. Check out his most recent BD( 80th I think) with Snoop Dog.

You still need to peep Ray and Willie’s It Was A Very Good Year from his final Genius Loves Company album. Bonus homework is Ray and Sir Elton John’s Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word which is hauntingly Charles last sang song.

Check out some Leon Russell with New Grass Revival. He was looking at doing some acoustic shows but decided to get New Grass Revival to open and be his backing band.
