I first became aware of Russel when he was touring with Joe Cocker and Mad Dogs and Englishmen. Later I found out he was part of the famous Wrecking Crew. The stuio musicians that were solely responsible for the sound of popular music in the 50s 60s and 70s. And he helped George Harrison out with his Bengla Desh concert. For Cocker and Harrison he wasnt just a musician, he was the musical directer and arranager for Cocker. To me, he could have never done a single song on his own but would still deserve to be in the HOF, he's contributed that much to popular music for decades

I saw Leon Russell at RFK stadium in D.C. in 1974. My friends had to cancel and I was so disappointed. I wanted to go so badly. I got up the nerve and didn’t tell my parents that I was going to go alone. The stadium was huge and I was a little scared, but I found my way onto the field and pretty close to the stage. It was fantastic and he was amazing! I may have gone alone, but I still remember what a wonderful time I had watching and listening to Leon Russell with thousands of other fans.

Leon was the epitome of the long haired country boy. He was from Oklahoma, and his musicianship was off the charts. You might also like his Stranger In A Strange Land and Home Sweet Oklahoma, both from his Shelter People LP. He was also part of the infamous Mad Dogs & Englishmen rock & roll tour with Joe Cocker back in 1970. You two should check out some videos clips from that tour sometime. It was a testament to the rock & roll excess of the times, and it was eventually turned into a documentary dvd. If you haven't heard Joe Cocker yet look for his With A Little Help From My Friends clip on YT from that dvd. Epic. Leon even wrote a song about the tour called The Ballad Of Mad Dogs And Englishmen, very wistful and bittersweet. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂

I am a fellow Oklahoman, and I have always been a huge fan of Leon Russell. He was an incredible songwriter and performer. He did a heartbreaking version of this song on his last album that he released before he passed away from brain cancer. The album is called "On A Distant Shore" and contains more of his original songs that were covered by many artists such as "Masquerade". Another great song from Leon Russell is "Tightrope."

It was long thought that Leon Russell's muse for the song was the singer Rita Coolidge, who claimed to be the inspiration and called it "the most beautiful song ever written." They met in the late '60s when Russell was one of the top session piano players and Coolidge was getting started as a singer. Russell wrote a song called "Delta Lady" about her that Joe Cocker recorded in 1969, but at a 2015 concert in New York City, he said "A Song For You" was not about her. Amy Winehouse also covered this song. Peace out.
