Kaiju no Kami Reviews - Ultraman Gaia (1998) Series and DVD

- As Ultraman Dyna grew to a close, Tsuburaya was unsure as to how they wanted to proceed with the franchise for their follow-up installment that was set to premier immediately after Dyna’s finale. Protecting the environment and telling us how much we suck as a race had become quite a prominent story telling aspect throughout the 1990s. Therefore, Tsuburaya hired Chiaki Konaka, who helmed an environmental episode in Towards The Future, to take on the role of being the head writer to the next series, which was ultimately titled Ultraman Gaia. As with every environmental social commentary, the question comes to mind, can you do an tell a story without making it feel like you are talking down on your audience? Or was Konaka just shouting his beliefs at the us? Let’s find out.

Fun fact: Gaia had the biggest budget in ultra history and its first episode burned 200 million yen at that time, which could make a new generation series right now…
Damn.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Agul/Fujimiya is actually played by the same actor who is Tezuka/Kamen Rider Raia from Ryuki if you didn’t know! 👍😄
Considering all the defense forces in the Ultraman shows are supposed to be a Japanese branch of an international organization, I think Gaia was the first Ultra show where we got to see several non-Japanese members/allies on a somewhat regular basis, compared to the one off foreign members who appeared in previous Ultra shows at that point.
I think that's the most English I've ever heard from a Japanese Ultraman show.
Now that made me wonder how Tsuburaya will handle New Generation Gaia since OG Gaia has non-Japanese casts in their roster, that includes a German.
I would be upset if Tsuburaya won't hired non-Japanese people into NGG.
Yeah, I believe it was.
It kinda reminds me of shows like UFO and Space 1999, where they have a large cast to encompass the organization, divided into different sections with different skill levels thus visually creating that aspect of a fully functioning and fully staffed organization with a hub of activity continuing to go on in the background while the focus is on the main cast. I believe Ultraseven had that as well, so it was nice to see that again.
@@bobbyshaddoe3004 Agul/Fujimiya is actually played by the same actor who is Tezuka/Kamen Rider Raia from Ryuki if you didn’t know! 👍😄
How Gamu got to be Ultraman Gaia was that in the beginning of the show, he entered the realm of Gaia which the giant of light was surprised to see and Gamu supposedly sees that if anyone's gonna have to do it, it's him.
There's a simple explanation on why he asked Gaia to make him an Ultra. In ep 5, Gamu being a boy genius when he was young, basically got ostracized by kids for being TOO SMART. Even Momoi Taro can relate to. (oh wait...same number and same plot, 0_-) So being an outcast, I say he's not wanted anywhere except for Alchemy Stars.
Boy, I'm started to be reminded of Taiyoh from Machine Robo Rescue.
Haven't seen Machine Robo yet. I have the BDs though.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork MRR was the last anime of Machine Robo so we're not going anywhere unless Bandai miraculously gives us a new anime out of the blue and all of a sudden. The trilogy by Hideki Sonoda is a fascinating one.
Gaia is a HUGE step up from Dyna in every way possible
Agreed.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork one thing that is kind of a shame is that its not another Sequel to Tiga like Dyna was, but given Dyna’s shortcomings that was probably for the best.
If I were to compare these shows... Cuz I once made an analogy to Star Trek and the subsequent spinoffs. Ultraseven is like TOS, Tiga is like TNG, Gaia is like DS9 and Dyna is like Voyager. If you've seen how often they hit the magic reset button on Voyager and tend to be inconsistent with certain things, you'll see how that kinda applies to Dyna. They're still good shows, but not as great as they could have been if they had simply maximized their potential a bit more.
@@bobbyshaddoe3004 That might be why I like Dyna so much I was a huge Voyager fan and DS9 is one of my least favorite it's just so slow and drawn out. I prefer the episodic format to the long serialized story arcs. I just started Gai though and so far I am really enjoying it.
fun fact : that Toy Store guy from Gaia Movie later became a Criminal for countless Sexual Assult
because of that, whenever Gaia Movie re-airs in japanese TV, the Toy store scene was entirely deleted.
That sucks about the dude being a creeper, but that's even bigger bs removing a scene just because of it. That's kind of a vital scene.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Went to look it up and it's crazier than I thought, including getting chased by a man in a bath towel after being caught peeping through a bathroom wall in 2001. Then there was a time when 2chan vote bombed Times "Person of the Year" where he was the top candidate for a brief moment before being removed.
Also he seems to like drugs as much as Lawrence Taylor and opened a YT channel last year.
Gaia = Captain Planet
Agul = Somewhat less evil Devil Gundam without the DG cells but still has issues with humanity until later
Hahahahaha.
One of the things that made Gaia really unique compared to other Ultramen is that he isn't an alien. Not really per se. He is akin to the manifestation of the will of Earth itself. Gaia and Agul are essentially Titans from Greek Mythology, if we're comparing them to anything, and that really makes them unique among other Ultramen in the series.
This is true. I was confused at first with your comment but then I realized you meant for Gaia himself and not his host.
Another stellar review as always, even though I feel Tiga is objectively the best of TDG, Gaia is my personal favorite. Thank God I was able understand the story and characters as a whole because as you mentioned those subs for the first couple episodes were atrocious. I really enjoyed the concept of XIG as it kept everything feeling fresh for the attack teams despite not allowing much character development, though as you mentioned Team Marlin got the shaft (I loved Georgie). I also liked how there were different subsets of monsters/aliens, Melzard (your favorite), the weather machines (my favorite), the metal morphers, the earth monsters, the space monsters, etc.
I also love how informative your reviews are, I feel like a dork not knowing that was not only Tsuburaya's grandson but also not realizing he was Space Sheriff Shaider LOL. It's also cool how Fujimiya's actor and the reporter got married in real life, I was totally unaware of that. It's cool knowing the same happened with Moa's actress and her partner from Geed.
What's even cooler about Fujimiya and Reiko is I guess there is a movie where they appeared with a daughter and their actual daughter played her.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I believe that may actually be the Superior 8 Ultraman Brothers movie, which Mill Creek is releasing in April.
Nexus is boring

So unfortunate that Hiroyuki Watanabe just passed away. He was such an iconic face.
I saw.
He looked like there was an aura about him.
Ah great Ultraman Gaia one of my favorites
:-)
11:00 "It's not because I liked you or anything baka!"
lol
According to a Tweet by Chiaki Konaka, a Foreign Remake of the series was proposed by Oliver Stone (yes, that Oliver Stone), but nothing ever came out of it.
Thank the gods for that.
My favorite episode was episode 34 because I'm a fan of Japanese pro wrestling and featured the late Shinya Hashimoto as himself.
That was cool, also knowing that it was focused on the Team Hercules member who was also one of Gaia's suit actors (the buffer V1/V2 suits & Supreme).
So the actor was an actual wrestler? That's awesome.
Without a doubt one of the better 90's Ultraman shows considering that it was a huge improvement over Dyna. Add to the fact that the show contains some cool-looking monsters (i.e. C.O.V. and Gan Q) makes this show even more iconic and unforgettable.
Yeah, it was very good.
Fun fact: Ultraman Agul was not supposed to return to series at all, but due to his popularity the producer ended up deciding to bring him back....
Also: Marisa Theresa Gow, now Voices Ultrawoman Beth(Eng dub)in the UGF series Currently running..
Yeah, I read about that later.

I have an Ultraman Gaia figure my mom got me from her trip to China. It was then I started watching the series.
Cool. Did you like the series?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork If you're talking about Gaia I only watched a few episodes. But for the Ultra series in general YES.
Gaia has some of the best looking monster designs in terms of executing ideas with some based on the 4 guardian animals of China and some based on demons or elements that corresponds to demons.
There were a ton of fantastic designs that need to come back.
This is my most favorite series of the Heisei era along with Nexus. The series makes me feel like "Man, I can't believe this was made in the 90s". It's a huge step up of Tiga and Dyna. Here are my thoughts about the series:
- The soundtrack is great with those synth patches which gives some eerie and dramatic feelings. Honestly, I'm sick of those upbeat orchestra in most fight scenes of the other Ultra series
- I love how they utilized different XIG members in each episodes. Consider the unmemorable team members in Dyna, I think this is their solution to make each of them relevant this time.
- Those news reporters to me are interesting addtion to the story, it gives me a little Ultra Q vibes
- The "Ransom for a Monster" episode is a relief after a bunch of serious episodes without going into Taro level of siliness
- The Aqbar episode gives me mysterious feeling like Ultraseven did, but with happy ending.
- This show looks like a basis for both Cosmos (not killing some monsters) and Nexus (story progression). Maybe Mebius too, for an anti-hero blue Ultraman.
The only thing that bothers me is that Gamu first met with Gaia is too simple as he just went into another dimension and met Gaia.
I still don't think Taro is any more or less silly compared to Ace and Leo.
You'er totally right about the reporters bringing on some Ultra Q vibes. I never thought of that before.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I still don't have enough balls to watch Ace.
4:10 Now that is a surprisingly good English speaking in a 90s Japanese TV show.
That's because they were English actors. :-)
Ultraman Gaia is without a doubt my favorite Ultra series out of the trilogy and easily my second favorite Ultra Show behind Ultraman Cosmos.
And all for the reasons stated in this video. The story was incredibly engaging in that it’s one of the very rare Ultra shows not to have any filler episodes due to the many recurring aspects such as the monsters, characters and the conflicts between the 2 Ultramen.
The soundtrack is easily among my favorites with the main opening easily being my favorite Ultraman op. And I enjoy the 2 ending themes. Though I personally much prefer Beat on Dream on > Lovin’You Loving Me.
Even the finale to Gaia is among my favorites. And I really like how they handled the message about saving the earth compared to other shows. It’s definitely a show that deserves a 5 out of 5 and I can’t recommend it enough.
Hopefully I'll get to see your review on Ultraman Cosmos as it’s one of the most wholesome shows I have ever watched.
Cosmos may still be awhile, Mill Creek's next releases are Ultraseven X (which KNK has already reviewed) and then Ultraman Mebius.
Yeah, as DLRX said, Mebius is next, so I think Tsuburaya is going to go backwards for the 2000 series.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Well even if Cosmos is not next, it will at least will be a great one to finish the 2000's era.
It's telling that Konaka helmed tiga and Gaia but not dyna lol
lol
Meeting ultraman Gaia actor in Japan World Heroes was so good! 👍
Nice.
The best tokusatsu that was environmentally focused was Spectreman imo.
And now that song has popped in my head, "Fear the flash, like a flame, faster than a plane, a mystery with the name of Spectreman." LOL
@@DLRX The song was actually a track called On the First Day of Forever(iirc)by an obscure band called Mystic Moods Orchestra. They stripped the original vocals with the ones for Spectreman and added moog synth stings and voila the most badass theme song for a localization dub. Plus some episodes have a track clearly by the US dub team that is really.....funky. Just go to the 10:00 mark in the first episode up here and you'll hear the weirdest music for a kaiji attack scene....
I know very little about Spectreman.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork It's one of the two P Productions shows that aired on WTBS and various other UHF channels in the US in the late 70s to the mid 80s. Last I saw the aired on TV here in Atlanta was on channel 69(lol) years before it became a UPN affiliate in the 90s. The other P show was Magma Taishi which was localized here as The Space Giants. Both are only on Japanese physical media for ridiculously expensive prices and no English subs. The most notable thing about the US dub is it was produced and written by Mel Welles,an actor who is mostly known for playing Mr Mushnik in the original Little Shop of Horrors movie, and his borscht belt humor bleeds into the dialog making the dub almost a gag dub. Finally, the creators of The Powerpuff Girls in interviews have stated that Spectreman is where they got the idea for their character Mojo Jojo. They based him on Spectremans main villain Dr Gori. As for notability in Japanese pop culture,Gori and his lackey Ra(Karras in the US dub)have a cameo in the live action Cromartie High School movie. And apparently the Japanese writers had that dad humor thing going on naming the villainous duo Gori and Ra.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Forgot to mention the premise was Dr Gori and Ra(Karras)after being expelled from their home planet finds our planet. They find it beautiful but the beauty marred by pollution. Their idea is to USE that pollution against us to conquer us through kaiju born out of toxic waste. Spectreman is a cyborg who can only transform from "human" to Spectreman with permission from or requesting it from his superiors. The show aired months before the release of Godzilla vs Hedorah and the first kaiju featured in the show was named Hedoron.
My only exposure to the series was that Canto dubbed movie.
Wasn't aware Miyu Irino was in the movie as a kid until somewhat recently.
Really?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork please review Kamen Rider Sangou (2015 Moive)
Sorry for failing to catch the premiere since I had to work, but what a great review! 👍
Yes, Gaia is my favorite outta the trilogy and I've made a comparison between *Gaia* & *Digimon Tamers* in their respective trilogies due to how much more real, detach & savvy both shows are compared to their predecessors. Gaia & Tamers are gold standard on how to bounce back from a lackluster 2nd entry by making a 3rd entry that stand on its own and not bogged down by continuity. Definitely a 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 show.
No worries on the premier.
I actually thought the second season to Digimon was the best, but it has been so long since I've watched it, it may not be.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Well, I've rewatched it and the "Team Rocket"-antics of Mummymon & Arukenimon + angsty Blackwargreymon were just painful to follow episode by episode. It also didn't do as well commercially IIRC. After all, they made Tamers a separate universe for a reason.
Yeah! Another Heisei Ultraman Series to get a 5 out of 5 from Kaiju No Kami. I do see and agree that Gaia is multiple steps up from Dyna with the story being much better. Not too mention, the Radical Destruction had more presence than the Sphere in Dyna did. And they were equally as much of a threat as they said they are in the finale.
The music were the best part especially with the ending being so good.
I find how good they made Agul is and the ways he contribute to the show as a whole.
Overall, I would give Gaia the same rating as you did. So way to go, you finished TDG Trilogy. Now can you do Cosmos or Maybe The Next movie?
Mebius is the next series Mill Creek is releasing, so that will be my next one.

Oh it's definitely way better than R/B.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yeah R/B was the downgraded version of it
For me it was the episode that feature the lake monster that turn out to be the 1945 japan experiment soldier, it was so horiffied that we see another couse of WW2 on modern day and the earth piercing bomb from the previous episode, its so comfort that the monster and the old man name hirano has found peace in the end
That was a really good episode too.
another ultra yes
Yep.
24:53 I remember that scene before, I thought it was something in my dreams or seen it in a different Japanese show.
It look so terrible, even way back then. I was like "something is really wrong with that scene". Either Tsuburaya back then used up most of their budget on the rest of the show that they couldn't make a more realistic background, or the animators were getting lazy.
I had forgotten about that until watching the review (maybe I mentally blocked it out), God that looked horrible. It looks like something out of Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube LOL.
Yeah, I have no idea what they were thinking with that scene. Like seriously???
One of the Writers, Hasegawa, wanted to introduce a new Ultra after Fujimiya planned departure, but when it was decided to bring Fujimiya back they scrap the idea, there wasn't much laid out before it was scrapped besides the Ultra in question being Catherine Ryan.
Why did they scrap it?

To answer your questions on the video, there’s actually an amazing Twitter thread by Ivanhobe and he goes into all of the technical know how as to why the video quality is the way that it is on these DVDs.
He also makes a pretty mean jab at the Gridman Blu Ray
I'm familiar with it.
Just ask, why you prefer Tiga over Gaia?
Story, episodes, I really like the GUTS team and how fleshed out each member was, Tiga himself is one of my top favorite designs, etc.
Good to see you got past the TDG trilogy. Anyways, how would you feel if the next two series following Trigger were also Next-Gen versions of the latter two?
Well we already know a Dyna one is coming, but if they also do Gaia then Tsuburaya is completely out of ideas for Ultra series.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Here’s an idea for an Ultra-show : The lead-Ultra starts out as a soldier of a conquering Empire who gets stationed on Earth to prepare it for subjugation.
His Home world weaponizes Kaiju as a means to attack other planets and he is partnered with one upon being sent to Earth. However, he lets his morality get the better of him and subsequently kills the monster, joining the side of Earth.
That could be intresting.
Agul probably inspired Kamen Rider Knight from Ryuki down to having similar color schemes being blue.
It's possible.
Still currently watching Gaia and really enjoying it! The monsters in the show are awsome as well! I like how a lot of them show up multiple times or get different forms as well. Also X.I.G’s base is just really cool. Hope they can do this series justice when they inevitably make the new gen Gaia.
I have no faith in Tsburuya anymore when it comes to these new Ultra shows that are copies of older ones. Trigger was awful and Decker sounds even worse.
Yeah don’t have too much hope for decker either. All we can do is hope for the best.
Also “SPHERES”
37:01 ¿why that last dialogue was in spanish, that character speaks in that lenguaje or you put for accident the latin spanish dub?
I never noticed that scene was in spanish. Maybe that's why it wasn't translated?
intriguing or the production of the dvd doesnt care the spanish
I do wonder if Chiaki Konaka will return to become the lead writer for the upcoming New Generation Gaia in 2023, and whether or not Toshihiko Sahashi would return to compose music for NGG.
And I wonder how Tsuburaya will handle NGG since OG Gaia make use of the continuing story arcs, and the story itself is more mature than both Tiga and Dyna.
I hope there isn't one because if there is, it will completely show Tsuburaya has nothing left to do with Ultraman.

Decided to come back to this after so long and unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any good subtitles for this show. Not decent fansubs since they just re use the official subs. You can’t escape this show’s awful subtitles. How Ultraman Gaia got cursed with terrible subtitles that Mill Creak got stuck with is a question the universe has decided not to answer me. This isn’t like with Dyna or any other Ultraman show where, even if the subtitles are bad, you at least have better options out there with fansubs, still preferable to buy the blu rays and DVDs, but with shows like Gaia and Cosmos it’s pretty much pick your poison.

I knew you were going to use Duel of the Fates for the opening.
:-D
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork please review Kamen Rider Sangou (2015 Moive)
My favorite ultraman. Tiga has a better look, Dyna is funny and Gaia is more realistic
My ranking goes Tiga, Gaia, then Dyna.
I think Tiga is better
9:30-9:40 I wonder what would happen if they made a show called Ultraman Garo
There'd be lots of death.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I would assume because both series have plenty of that. Especially Garo.
Those light beam sword fights still proved to be far superior than the sequel trilogy duels of SW.
On a more serious note, Gaia is a show that i really struggled with the first time i watched this show, I honestly found it to be quite underwhelming aside from the dual ultra aspect it brought. Looking at it again, I like it a more this time around however the episodes that are not revolving around Agul and Gaia are still hit or miss and XIG is a group that is good in concept however miss in execution. Still noting Tiga as the best of the trilogy (even if some may say its overrated).
3.5/5
I did struggle with the first few episodes to Gaia, though not as much as I did with Dyna as a whole. It was after like episode 7 or 8 where I really started to get into the series.
Also, I never knew the Cake boss from OOO was in Gaia.
No shit? I somehow totally missed that one when I was looking up the actors for the review. Gives me something to mention in my eventual OOO review though.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork The actor is
Takashi Ukaji.
Can't wait for new releases of Cosmos and Nexus....
It will be cool.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Since Cosmos and Nexus are my favorites I will be very mad if the subtitles are butchered.
I watched Nexus on Crunchyroll and the subs were mostly fine, though not perfect. One episode was titled ???.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork I noticed that the DVD exclusive Episode EX: Lost Memories (which is set between episodes 31 and 32) was not included on Crunchyrole.
Edit: The 45 minute director's cut of Episode 29 was also not included.
Did not know there was one, but yeah, Crunchyroll only had the rights to the show that aired on TV, no extras. I wouldn't expect the extended cut on the mIll Creek DVD either.
Maybe they just couldn't get the actors who played Tiga and Danya back.
Either way, it's still a garbage movie.
It’s actually kind of weird why Ultraman Gaia kills monsters and then they explode like Bruh save this suits already
I actually don’t know why and what the explosions are for but still the suits are really cool and they are extremely cool based on of any kind of Kaiju
I definitely love the suits in Gaia.
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork yeah but every time if they died they explode into many pieces it’s just weird why they made this into a decision I do love the monsters they look good but after they die they basically exploding to so many pieces like your flesh and organs and stuff yeah that’s messed up
@@elijahzilla619 I like that more than traditional explode. And fyi, they didn't actualy destroy the suit during exploding scene. They replace it by small clay figure
@@Kepin151 oh
LightSaber Duel Ultraman Style
lol
Oh, if you think that these subs were bad, oh boy, are you going to absolutely despise the Ultraman and Gridman for their subs. They're both way worse than this
I got through Gridman okay, as long as you can understand the story it's not too bad, just annoying.
Are they accurately translated though?
@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork the Ultraman subs are machine translated and left aligned. Gridman uses fansubs for the first four episodes and then a machine translation for the rest of them
@@DLRX Yeah, that is effectively my only major issue I have with Gridman albeit through no fault of the show’s own. Still definitely among top favorite Toku series. My personal list on that is currently a work-in-progress for me.
@@michaelstevens6507 Aren't they just using what Tsuburaya provided for their streaming version? I don't know if they are fan subs. Mill Creek just uses the preexisting subtitles they are given from the source.
Ultraman Gaia Is Like Kamen Rider Ryuki
How so?
😊
please review Kamen Rider Sangou (2015 Moive)
Ultraman Tiga was the first Ultraman series I ever watched, and I thought it was good. Then I watched Ultraman Dyna and and that wasn't so good. Then I watched Ultraman Gaia, and that was great but then they came out with Ultraman neos 😂 and I thought for every good Ultraman series there's going to be a bad one and then Max and Meblus change my mind so you know pros and cons
Yeah, Gaia was so good. Mebius is great too. Not a fan of Max.
URUTORAMAN GAIAAA!!!
