It’s like as you get older, you appreciate and understand what the director of Ultraman Nexus has in minds, to teach the kids not to give up, stay true to their own ideals, and to the older audience, a strong motivation toward both sexes. Also how they incorporate how real world politics would do if such cases of monsters appear.

  • @Kostte-zp6he
    @Kostte-zp6he Год назад +3

i really love how they use a new concept and make it into some plot in the series.
the meta field, (i heard that they made the meta field for budget reason) it is a really cool concept that not only look sick but really useful to minimaze environmental damage. then experimenting on nexus to upgrade the night raider equipment, the logic and the ethic of that really hit, like nexus will be reborn why not do it. then the passing of dunamyst, jun see it as a punishment for his life that set him to unending quest to destroy space beast and ren see it as opportunity that he use to leave a useful life.
the writing is just that good. the acting is not a 10 but the writing just carry the whole show. and its a really sad how the series got cut off and showing nagi be a dunamyst while she does not have pure heart.

Oh boy, where do I start? Overall I didn't hate Nexus but you can see the lost potential all over the place, especially by the second half. The Next movie had good action but was just kinda there IMO, and in the end didn't feel too connected to the series itself. As far as being a 'dark and edgy' series it definitely felt like Nexus was trying to be Tsuburaya's answer to Kamen Rider Kuuga and more, at least that's how I felt. Agreed, I liked Jun, and Ren was a total downgrade. Hell, the entire second half of the series was a real let down compared to the first half, and I know it's because of the cancellation but still. Lastly, I won't spoil it for people who haven't seen the series yet but man was that final villain completely out of left field.
At the end of the day it is a little sad, I give them credit for wanting to try something new, and the potential was there, unfortunately it's a case of just too many factors working against them, and as an end result the final product suffers.
*Thanks SEED Destiny (I hate Shinn and Rey so much)😡

I watched Ultraman: Nexus around the early 2010s. I consider it to be the Kamen Rider Black and Jetman of it’s time. The dark and gritty tone was a good fit for it to make it standout a from the previous Heisei era Ultra series. Ultraman Nexus has a good smooth complex design that is good unlike some of ridiculous designs of few of Showa Ultra’s like Taro and Leo. I heard the show was supposed to have 50-55 episodes in plan, but due to struggles due Japanese audiences not liking the new twists and being placed on morning children channel later half the shows run, it was force to end sooner. Overall a good entry probably the top three Ultra series of 2000s.
Mr. no Kami. I have couple of questions.
    1. What if Nexus actually did better in ratings and got acclaim response from fans and critics on par to Ultra Seven and Jetman and what if of Ohranger(Had they didn’t change and kept the dark tone)? What impact would it had on Ultra series of the 2000s and would it’s successor Ultraman Max for example been a dark entry as well?
    2. On Kamen Rider Black dvd it is released by Discotek Media. Just curious. Why is Kamen Rider Black release from Discotek instead Shout Factory? Is there some collaboration between Shout Factory and Discotek for future releases of Rider series from both Showa and Heisei era entry’s?

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork

I'm sure if Nexus had been popular, it would have lived out its entire run. I also don't think Max would have happened.

Regarding the movie, There were plans at one point to make a sequel movie to this film, titled ULTRAMAN 2: Requiem, and two costumes created for the film - however, the film was cancelled due to the poor ratings and subsequent cancellation of Nexus itself. These suits were later reused for Space Fear Demon Z and Ghost Sorcerer Reibatos; at one point in production, the latter was even named Requiem.
At one point the production team considered making Ultraman simpler instead of more complex in an attempt to be realistic. In designer Maruyama's own words: "He ended up looking like Pepsi Man, and that was no good, so we went in the opposite direction."

Despite the flaws, I'll add it to my favorite Ultra series. One thing I like about Ultra series is that they went into dark/horror and serious theme sometimes (I rarely see Godzilla franchise went on this direction). Still, it seems like Tsuburaya got cursed; everytime they made a serious show, shit happened (e.g. the company went bankrupt after Seven X). If this show was aired on the right timeslot, I believe it would be a huge success.

Awesome review and I do agree with where you're coming from in regard to Nexus. This is a show with INSANE potential to be much better but had to sadly be bring down by other factors. This had to do with how in the past, shows would spend like shit ton of money and by tons I meant alots. The old spending habits had no real set budget per episode and an entire show could cost at least 52 million USD to over 100 million USD (Source: Nexus Production History). You can guess, how ridiculous it is and Nexus and The Next movie did got hit hard by this.
I do liked TLT and how they operate which added to the realism of them needing a memory police to deal with situations in regards to the Space Kaijuu like. Their ship remains one of my favorite designes and still is today, and them having cloaking tech is a good for secretcy.
The heroes are great to me, I liked the developement of Komon which is where it shine. Komon is a call back to those old Ultra Protagonist but got thrown cruelly into a decidedly not-Ultra world. Not help that Komon faced lots of tragedy and sadness (Riko death, Almost kill an innocent child, and his friend Himeya passing), he still managed to be a good person in the end sealed it for me. Nagi is an example of a person so consume by rage and vengeance that it bite her back hard in the final episode when this flaw reach it conclusion in allowing Zagi to return to fullpower.
I dont know why but I liked Night Raider Captain. He is a great captain with actual morals in a Not Ultra World and his action when rescuing Ren is heartwarming to me. As for two other members, if Nexus had allow to gone on for much longer, we would have got more backstory for Shiori and her character arc in the main story not in EX Episode. Ishibori too not having one is a foreshadow to his reveal, my guess is that they would eventually shows us his dark deeds in the Night Raider in a quick several shot of flashback. This would be him deleting Ultimate Vanisher, offering Mizorogi power, killing Nagi parent, and of course summoning Space Beasts. I like Matsunaga due to his connection to The Next, his manipulative side and drive to have Ultraman power against Space Beasts. The show actually made me sympathize with him when it reveal his other side like being a caring father to his daughter and mourning feeling towards his decease wife.
Now let's get to our Dunamist, I truly loved Himeya and his character arc in the show. His arc is all about forgiveness and redemption, he saw Ultraman power as his own punishment for the death of a little girl named Sarah. But at the end, he earn his salvation after learning the reason why he was given Nexus power. I want to say that Jun himself is already a veteran who had to harden himself with his emotion way before lest he be driven to self-harm. Ren is a good dunamist and would have been better if the show didnt cut itself so short, and more developement was given to him. I believe you have misinterpret Ren and his arc, he is like that because he is hiding the fact that he is going to die soon and doesnt seem to care about his own life. May I remind you that the guy went from being an innocent kid to literally grabbed and choking Komon in one episode. And how he doesnt seem to care for his own life to the point of not avoiding damage, in a way he is suicidal by his own genetic defect.
Nexus design and form are awesome to me since it look so good! Their fighting style also fit their form too, as one youtuber put it best: "Junis Red is built for strength and Himeya himself was a lot more cautious and perceptive in combat, a trait that shows in his fighting style. Junis Blue on the other hand is built for speed, while its user Ren was young and inexperienced, coupled with the more "I'm going to die in a year" mindset he had, his fighting style was a lot bolder and reckless."
Meta-Field is an awesome concept that I never see another Ultraman used ever again to a great degree which is a shame. This is one of those time where even though the idea is to save money only made Nexus more unique. I say this is the first time that an Ultra ever care about collateral damage.
Other than Dark Ultra being great to look at. The monster to me represent how a deep space monster should be: very scary and "lovecraft" enough to where I surely would shit my pant and runaway than taking picture since after all they are Space Beasts. They actually did more with the Space Beasts which gave them more reason to be around and I cant help but applaud them for that.
Aside from decent effect and CGI, I loved the Sountrack to dead. It even remain in my heart for so long that I still remember it. I too liked second ending song the most due to how the beginning and ending of it just makes me wanna dance with it.
I want to say that regardless of what happen to Nexus and its episode and story flaws due to factors outside of its control (Which I can say, does excuse it). I loved Nexus as a show and what it offer and it still hold a special place in my heart, I dont think other ultra shows had such impact on me as much as Nexus did when I first saw it. Nexus is still an ultraman show regardless of its darker theme and realism, because it also shows that you can still have hope and goodness even in a place where there is darkness and despair. It's also because of those darkness and despair that we can find hope in our life and in the world.

I still loved the idea behind Meta-Field and the atmosphere that Nexus exude with it soundtrack and the tone that accompanied it. If only we can get an animated version of Ultraman Nexus like the Showa one then they can probably try Nexus again to achieve it full potential.

Personally THE series that I liked the most.
I won't deny it has flaws though.
I DO like Ren's arc, but if given more episodes the second half would be better.
Nagi deserved SO MUCH better. Give her a Junis form (Junis Rouge from the concept art would fit her personality the most, and compared to normal Junis, Rouge would be more feral and aggresive, and I headcanon it's attack to be Burst-Ray Schtrom (think of the attack as basically similar to Dyna Strong's Gulnate Bomber).)
Ishibori/Zagi's reveal... COULD have been better. Problem is is that he's rather forgettable. I say make Ishibori someone who is close to Komon and Nagi so that his betrayal would actually hurt and the reveal would be more impactful.
The final battle against Zagi honestly COULD have been better, show more feats to show WHY Zagi is a threat and why Noa is powerful and considered a God-like Ultra, possibly even surpassing King. Ginga had the right idea for that. I DO like that we see Komon going from Anphans to Junis, Junis Blue, and finally Noa, THAT should be kept.
Overall, Nexus is good, but with tweaks it could be perfect for me. And I LOVE Nexus' designs, my personal favorite. Helps that I sorta imagine different Junis colors.

The entire focus shifted from Komon to Ren, Komon's plot about his childhood trauma was dropped, the UFO conspiracy people completely disappeared without any resolution, Jun's formers coworkers just having their memories wiped out without their story going anywhere, rendering everything they had done in the first 24 episodes moot, and Ishibori being the actual villain was random without any development to back it up, make all of that way too hard for me to believe it was planned out from the getgo.

@@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork it was, it was just that the show was cancelled. What was actually supposed to happen was that Ren would have a few more episodes dedicated to him to better resolve his storyline, and then nexus would jump around from different female hosts like Shiori, Ren's love interest, and then Nagi to avoid dark Zagi. Nagi would be nexus for a mini arc and would end up saving komon from drowning in the past and thus learn the source of his motivation, then giving him the ability to be nexus, where he would face off against dark Lucifer. I suspect the twist with Dark Zagi being there the whole time wasn't planned and everything was changed due to cancellation because the show was planned out at 50 episodes

You can tell it was planned out for this arc because if you look closely the arm of the person pulling him out of the water is wearing night raider gear, so it's Nagi

No, episode 4 showed a shadowy figure. there was nothing that signified it was Ishibori. In fact, it could have been The First from The Next for all we could have known. There was no development at all for Ishibori to be the villain.

good show, though I do think the 'dark and edgy' thing is good as a rare experiment only, not as a foundation for the Ultraverse. I wasn't surprised of it's lack in popularity at the time (despite the scheduling mistake)

@@androyus I agree definitely. Things are getting more grim regarding kaiju count. I think Tsubs has forgotten that new kaiju (yes, every episode) is a big part (perhaps the biggest part) of what built the franchise, including toy sales! If a series has 50 new monsters, thats 50 new toys to collect. There are only so many 'forms' the heroes can have. (of course Kamen Riders are getting more and more forms every second....ugh)

Tsupro was still in financial dire straits and even if Nexus was a commercial and ratings success in its intended time slot that means no Seed destiny, it still would have been a one-time thing, those last few episodes were originally to be made into a movie instead once the series got canceled before that got scrapped too. They trusted the wrong show at the time it's creator well, I guess JNN didn't want to lose the Gundam series back to ANN (UC and first three alternate timelines) or Fuji TV (Turn A) after airing nothing more than more than a over glorified gunpla CM. (And don't get started on it, Brought back the franchise It only brought interest in the model cuts because it was the directors intention to have people be interested otherwise it contains the same bad stuff from the '90s model kits.)

    • @MichaelSerrano-sk1vq
      @MichaelSerrano-sk1vq 10 месяцев назад

When I say '90s kits, I mean all the timelines had this problem when the economic bubble burst, frankly, if I Sunrise I would have let MBS lose Gundam but not go back to ANN or Fuji TV but try another network like Nippon TV/Yomiuri TV or TV Tokyo to compete with the Ultra Series, and to high definition and wide screen, if Mitsuo Fukuda and Chiaki Morosawa want to do a sequel to that series, let it be an OVA it doesn't have to be a full television series. The only reason why JNN picked up Gundam in the first place is because they lost the rights to air Kamen Rider When they misheard they were developing a show for the year 1999 or even 2000 when Toei and Ishimori Productions were developing Kuuga in 1998, thinking they were going to have a Ultraman series only for Tsuburaya were not going to have another show for another or two when they were developing Cosmos. TV Asahi picked up Kuuga and you can tell that the show had to be rewritten for the 8:00 AM hour, but the rest they say is toku history. JNN has a history of choosing their cash cows instead of taking risks. Back then it was Ultraman, today it's now MSG, someday it could be a different property, That could be a revived property, the Brave series (Sunrise), Galaxy Express 999 (Toei), or even Cobra (TMS) and it gets picked up by JNN and it exceeds not only current Gundam numbers but Seed sales numbers. Maybe I'm wrong maybe it's a brand new property that is a commercially successful prospect. MSG would not be in a good place.

Max would have still happened but much different circumstances, the kid friendly tone would have been still there but I think they would have been much better casting, much better writing, tighter direction. There is actually a lot more to the Max and Mebius productions, But yes, I do think those shows would have happened under much better circumstances.
