Ultraman: The Next - Ultra Retrospective

- The start of an ambitious but doomed one-off project, The Next is both a standalone film and a prologue to one of the Ultra franchise's most ambitious television entries. Is the movie itself deserving of the hype?

Check out my other reviews of the Ultra series here. The Ultraman Nexus video will be coming out next week :))))))

8:10 So funny thing about that. This series only happened because the author and artist, of Linebarrels of Iron fame no less, had a Kamen Rider inspired series that Toei C&D'd so Tsubu came over and said "why not work for us?"
Ultraman The Next definitely has the most radical Ultraman design, I love the biological look they gave Anphans and Junis. The theme for The Next by Tak Matsumoto definitely stuck with me, I listen to it every now and again just because it goes so hard. Can’t wait to see your Nexus video!
Man says Oven and uses Microwave sound effects, didn’t think we would notice? Not today my friend.
I'm going to delete my channel.
@@ZaGorudan but I love your content, so don’t. 😆
You're really feeding us good recently
u r welcome
He's cooking fr🙏🔥
I really dug the transformation sequence here. The "I don't want to die" line gave/gives me chills. Good shit.
How can there be an Ultraman: The Next without an Ultraman: The First?!
He's called "The Next" because he's the second alien to arrive on Earth after The One.
Meta-wise, though, it's supposed to be the next chapter in the Ultraman franchise.
@@UltraGalaxyify I was mainly asking this as a joke, referencing the film Kamen Rider: The Next, which was the sequel to Kamen Rider: The First
@@otaking3582 Sorry, it's hard to convey sarcasm/jokes online. I honestly thought that was a serious question, because there are people out there dumb enough to ask it.
There is, but it's so obscure it's only got a snippet of mention in Ultrawiki.
If I remember correctly, in Nexus they mentioned how the Ultraman we see in "The Next" is the same ultraman we see during Nexus. No one remembers because the aliens in Nexus wiped the memories of everyone on earth. It was something along those lines
I'm sure the people at TLT used the aforementioned aliens.
during the Next's legacy segment, I would totally agree that the Ultraman manga is more kamen rider/metal hero inspired than Ultraman. there have been times in Ultraseven, Tiga, and Zett where an Ultra is in a human sized form, but the plot makes it known that such a form is very impractical do to it's own time limit.
This is easily my favorite Ultra movie, this movie is what got me to know (and love) the Ultra franchise. I remember as a kid I would rent this movie a lot in a DVD rent store.
"You can be my Ultraman anytime."
Also, the incomplete form of The One, kinda looks like the 98 Godzilla.
Except you know, good.
For all of its problems, it's a thousand times better superhero flick than what's coming out from Marvel/Disney and DC these days.
Not a high bar to pass tbh.
@@dudududu1926The fact that the bar has been so low is already telling.
The fact that it came out the same year as Spider-Man 2 doesn’t help matters
@@deathmetal271 You mean the best of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy?
*this is the journey and story of Ultraman Nexus the god of all Ultras*

The best Ultraman ever made in my opinion
Great review! Despite its issues I really enjoyed this film when it was first released. I liked the darker approach and the organic looking armor reminded me of the Guyver
The start of my favorite Ultraman of all time. Plus this movie actually introduced me to the franchise
First ultraman movie i saw ever, still have the dvd for it despite having no subs lol
Let him cook, guys
Also would love to see you review the Anime NETFLIX Ultraman soon!
I loved that movie, so I'm happy you covered it!
This movie was definitely alright, though Nexus was more fully realized
This was my first ever Ultraman movie I watched as a kid.
The next theme is 🔥🔥🔥
The intro theme goes stupid hard
Matt Frank is a patron 👀
It's RAW
I've been recently watching your videos on the history of the Ultraman series. I was wondering if you had any plans on doing videos on SSSS Gridman and SSSS Dynazenon, which are both part of the Ultraman universe and maybe one on Giant Robo or Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot known here in the United States?
It's really just a matter of time before I talk about those.
There was gonna be a sequel to the next called requiem
Decent enough film. Saw it recently in preparation for the Nexus watch and I liked it, but like you said it feels like it doesnt live up to its own expectations. The characters are super flat, The Next and The One are barely explored as elements and it feels like a barebones story. Functional enough but with little flavor to latch on to. I love The Next's design and is one of my favorites, but thats about what I can really praise the film for.
Haven't watched The Next but I just do not care for that design, it just makes me think "Hollywood Remake Ultraman"
Mildly disappointed that shin Ultraman didn’t look like nexus or the next
Well to be fair, Shin Ultraman is just a completely remake of the OG Ultraman, everything including the Ultraman design did not try to create anything new.
@@wzx6x6z6w yeah but I kinda wanted an Ultraman that looked different and wild like the next for a completely cgi Ultraman instead of a skinny Ultraman
To me lack of color timer and his more uncanny bottom half sale it for me, but i can't said too much about his top half as it's identical to Original@@sedsitametadinterreteliber2937
Yeah Nexus wasn't really well received because it cattered too hard to older fans
Its way to radical for its own good. And by older, it was meant for the kids that watched cosmos (at least that's what the scifi japan interview said)
