For those looking to do this tutorial in 4.1 and can't find the "vertex colors", you have to use the "Add Color Attribute" with "Face Corner" and "Byte Color" to achieve the same result as in the tutorial ! o/ Thank you very much Simon, as a total noob to blender, I love your tutorials so thank you VERY much for the knowledge !
For anyone trying to follow this now - everything works ok with the color attributes instead of vertex color. If you're not seeing your brush affecting your canvas at the beginning, set the distance attribute to something below 1.
Thank you so much! If you don't find "Vertex Colors" at 1:43 just go to 2:16 and choose the auto-generated "Col" that Blender creates, when you just click at the "Paintmap Layer" box . The same at 3:33 : Just search for "Color Attribute" instead of "Vertex Color". This worked perfectly for me!
yeah, i used same workflow, because in blender 3.5 something has changed, but i managed to solve the way of the nodes, but my screen is just black, no blue color like showen here 4:10 ...anyone same problem ?, i used the auto generated vertex color and connected it with color atribute, but it dosent work. thanks all ciao
For those having transparency issue in Cycles where broken black meshes are showing Go to Render Properties>Light Paths>Max Bounces>Transparent and increase the number until its done
Hey man, I really appreciate you for uploading your files to be able to look at them. I followed everything in the tutorial and for some reason the very first part woulnd't show the blue paint brush, not sure if it was something I did wrong but I can confirm after downloading the file it does work with the latest update
Thank you!! I am working on a 3D brain simulation where neurons charge up upon reaching their action-potential threshold. This is exactly what I needed!!
On the 2d version couldn't you make it so the 2d plane of the effect was always parallel with the camera. so no matter how you moved it it was facing the right way to the camera.
5:56 is the most interesting tid-bit for me. Being able to control the brightest and darkest parts of a grayscale is something I always often find myself in need of, when working with materials and images. However, if I am not working with an image editor or a material-editing package frequently, I forget what every blend mode does. I wish there was a small table of graphs that shows the transformation of input data being an image and a grayscale gradient to output data with transformations being different blend modes. Much appreciation to anyone that can provide a link of something matching my description. Not just from me but rest of the community on this channel!
This is incredible, absolutely great tutorial. For some reason, when I'm editing keyframes of moving the plane through an object to make it look like it is lighting up with electricity, it will completely stop working and I have to ctrl+z back through keyframes until it begins working again. anyone having on cycles issues just. 1 click on your electric effect on your viewport 2 click on vertex groups 3 in vertex colours press + jobs a good un 😁
A bit late to the game, but just watched this and the idea is brilliant to me. I have a lot of ideas what to do with this. A note on trails in 3D space. Couldn't you just use the same technique as the 2D plane. But use a 3D cube. Since your using 4D noise (the W) then the noise pattern should be the same in 3D space as the driving noise uses 4D space for the shift. For this you would need a cube with a lot of geometry, which might be a drag in viewport. But in theory it should work the same.
