Best String Trimmer Review: • Best String Trimmer EV...
So we all love DeWalt shop tools, but the big question is how good is their outdoor tool line?
In this video I review and test the new 2021 Dewalt 20v 14" folding brushless battery powered string trimmer (model DCST922P1). This trimmer includes a fast charger and is powered by a 20v Max XR 5Ah battery. It has a cutting swath of 14" and uses .08" cutting line.
Watch this video to see if this tool deserves to be in your garage.....

Had a Husqvarna gas trimmer, got tired to mix oil and gas, tired of getting to start it at the new season, so I sold it. Bought this Dewalt trimmer, and for my use which is just normal grass edge trimming, it is outstanding. Easy to use, store and operate. If you are someone who think that you can abuse it like that old hammer you picked up at the dump, then this is not for you. I always say, if you look after your tools then they will look after you.

Had this trimmer for a couple of years now. Here are my observations: Upgrade the line to the echo or milwakee 0.08 line, these seem to be tougher. I haven't yet experimented with a thicker line. The head is fine, although you can't really let it "float" on the ground like some other speed feed heads (echo, husqvarna). I'll be upgrading my trimmer head once this one bites the dust.
Also for those who have some difficulty with the balance, you can move the handle to the lower section of the trimmer shaft where it's more neutral.

The manual actually shows the loop mounted on the lower section, as far up to the folding joint as it will go, and angled back toward the battery end. It is very well balanced in that location.

Just bought mine in Aug. 2024; hope they fixed whatever causes it to die. I had the same problem with the trimmer being too back-heavy. Was really muscling it. I just installed the handle right below where it folds, and it is perfectly balanced. Agree the battery charge-status LEDs should be visible without removing the battery; kinda silly oversight. But this is my first string trimmer, and I am happy with it so far.

I found myself in the camp of needing a trimmer and owning Dewalt batteries already, after 5 minutes of fighting the terrible balance on this thing I rubbed both of my brain cells together and moved the handle below the joint and angled towards me. HUGE DIFFERENCE, can't speak to the longevity or loading the string but the balance is fixable.

Maybe they've changed something in the past year but mine is perfectly balanced with the battery in. Still heavy, but definitely rests with the head level. I'm using a 10ah battery that came with my mower though. Even with that there is a lot of room left in the battery compartment. I feel like these were designed with the flex volt batteries in mind even though they have a different model for the 60v batteries.

    • @RJMachine62

It's because he installed the handle on the top section instead of the bottom section and then didn't take time to adjust it. Mine is on the lower section and it balances fine. Also, the trimmer guard has a latch built in to latch the head in place when folded, it was intentional.

  • @John-B69692

I use two of these for my lawn and tree business. I use 6AH batteries (the added weight helps with balance) and I have installed the handles below the knee turned around backwards so the grip is over the knee and it balances almost perfectly. I believe they still weigh less than echo gas weed eaters.

I have the first gen DeWalt trimmer and it doesn't have that out of balance thing going on at all. I put the 9 amp flexVolt battery from my circular saw in it and adjusted the handle a little bit and it's perfectly balanced. And you can tell it could be balanced with any size battery. I was regretting not having the foldable one when I first saw it now I'm glad I have the old version. Mine is a pain in the ass to load string into it, but it holds a lot of string and I put the expensive stuff in it so it lasts a long time.

I have over 300ft of trimming to do, plus around 2 trees and swings, and I rarely use more than 1 bar on my 5ah battery during a normal weekly mow. For someone who doesn't own this battery platform, I think your review is spot on for reasons why someone shouldn't buy into the platform if this string trimmer is one of their end goals. Contractors that might need to cut a little bit of grass around where they want to set up their miter saw stand or table saw or work table, will find this string trimmer a godsend. It's hard to compare a 60 volt ego against a 20 volt anything, but you do make a good point for anyone who is looking for a dedicated string trimmer platform. That being said, I don't know that I have seen a 20 volt string trimmer yet that isn't unbalanced. It's all because the motor is at the front at the string trimmer head instead of the back where the battery is and it is going to weigh more. You are acting like the metal at the head of the string trimmer added all the weight, but that string trimmer head weighs barely anything. It's the motor inside that has all the weight with the copper windings. That aluminum head hardly weighs anything. Your review definitely brings some valid concerns to mind, but seeing it in action definitely helped me see that this string trimmer may actually be what I'm looking for.

@@Kitearmy I'm not quite clear, why do you see visual access to Power meter as issue at all? While using tool you are doing exactly that - using tool to have a job done. When battery is dead you simply replace the battery and you move on. How many bars is left or used ... that's irrelevant. But if you are so interested in battery status you simply take battery out, check the level, plug it back and keep doing your job. I'm sure no one expects DeWalt to change complete engineering of their battery operated power tools just bcs of this particular trimmer. I have several DeWalt power tools and was never interested in battery status while working with my drill, impact drill, 50-90mm nail gun, Brad nail gun ... and a couple of other DeWalt tools. It's simply pointless remark.

I've never needed indicator lights to know my power tool is running on low charge. Weed whacking is based on light resistance. There isn't a true need for a charge indicator. Additionally, when you fold the trimmer, it snaps into the string guard - it appears it was designed to do so even if it does feel a little forced. With the handle on the lower end and the battery compartment snapped it, it transports very nicely when carried by the handle.

So I had the 60V for two years. Not bad. Got the 20V as a replacement since I can run both 20 and 60 on it. Thing isn’t even powerful enough to to cut the string when it’s too long on the head. It immediately shuts the motor down. Piece of junk. Kept the battery, tossed the tool. Got a gas powered Husqvarna.

My biggest question with trimmers is: How do you edge with them?? My old B&D lets me push a button and flip the end, so I'm still holding the handle and trigger the same way, and I can cut a dead-straight line along the sidewalk at a fast walking pace. I'm really confused and sad to start shopping for a new trimmer and see this feature isn't on hardly any of them! Am I missing something? I see a shot at 4:40 where you are edging, but I can't see how you're holding it. I tried to hold this trimmer inverted in a store and it felt very awkward.

I have this trimmer also. Bought it cuz I have several large capacity DeWalt batteries. It’s true that it’s unbalanced. I’ll move the handle down to get a better balance point. I don’t really like the hinge for two reasons: when I would fold it in half to store it in my shed, by hanging it from the handle, it sticks out from the wall a little too far for my liking, also when folded I fear breaking the plastic shroud when it contacts the battery housing. And a third, after a year of ownership, I can feel “play”, looseness in the hinge while trimming. “No bueno”!
