So, I have what is arguably the most idiot-proof outdoor tool I have ever owned...a string trimmer with a rapid refill line. I've used gas trimmers in the past, and threaded the head by taking the cover off and wrapping. I was struggling like heck to thread the Ego, you explained it perfectly in less than 10 seconds. Thank the Lord I found this video (almost by accident). And thank you sir! And Ego!
Thank you! I recently purchased the EGO mower, line trimmer and blower. This week was my first attempt with the line trimmer and I scalped parts of my lawn...I should have watched your video first!
Great video. I learnt two valuable tips from this - swinging from left to right with a clockwise spinning trimmer, and not moving too close to the brush (grass). Works wonders and makes my life a whole lot easier. Looks like I’ve been doing it wrong all this while. Many thanks.
Your PRO tips is so helpful. I have used trimmer for years and two very important tips from you. One is about where to position myself based on the rotation of the head. Habitually I like to stand on the right side of my trimmer and often got nik from flying debris. Now I realize my position must be relatively to the direction of the rotation. I also learned to adjust the shaft length so that my arm is extended straight. I made adjustment today based on these two tips and what a difference it made. THANK YOU.
I will let you know how these tips work. After a great deal of frustration trying to load another trimmer, I purchased the EGO for the fun of loading it last summer. Looking forward to becoming more proficient using it 😂
@@Kitearmy did they come out with the power load after the bump? Is it a pricier version or something ? Otherwise I don’t get why they sell both. It honestly feels like squatting down and using a hedge trimmer would be far more effective and quicker for sure. Actually wishing I had picked that up before the string trimmer now 😂 Is there string/line that’s stronger or more slicey etc…and do you want thinner line for stronger growth because it slices through it easier, or heavier line because it’s stronger than the growth and less likely to break. Or none of the above.
Mine spins counter clockwise, but I've cut with right side anyway. What's taking getting used to is standing on the right side. I'm so used to the left. I might need a clock-wise trimmer
Do you guys swing the trimmer back and forward when cutting down brush or only cut in one direction? I see some guys swing and some cut like a lawn mower.
Tip #3 is subjective. I found it best to edge against the spin of the string it makes the cleanest cut and also the string doesn't propel the head of the weadeater when you make contact with the ground which can gouge the grass. If you're going to trim with the spin of the string it's best to do it walking backwards to avoid debris flying at you.
Biggest tip here is in which direction does the head rotate. This will save windows and car windshields etc from being broken. I know some take the guard off but to me that's a no no. Reduce the guard down for edging purposes only, so you have a better sight line whilst doing so. Didn't read all of the comments but in case no one brought it to your attention. When your using a file to sharpen something you don't drag it back and forth over the surface, you push it in one direction which is forward. Then do the same thing again until your done.
Holding trigger in right hand, I always had to walk backward with a clockwise trimmer to keep the line from digging into the dirt! Now I'm using a counter spin, and I get to walk forward. What you are saying is ass backwards to me!
Its a little hard for me to tell from the pictures. When you say clockwise spinning do you mean clockwise when holding the trimmer during use or do you mean clockwise if you turn the trimmer over like you were going to change the spool of line? The picture looks like it might be upside down/turned over but I cant tell for sure.
If you prefer to work without the trimmer guard, I've noticed that it will allow up to eight inches of string on each side of the trimmer head. More than that, and the electric motor shuts off momentarily to protect itself, e.g., overloading or overheating. If you tap out too much string, snip the length back to 8-inches or slightly less, and you're good to go. 👍👍👍
I have one of those electric weed eaters and the battery always dies when I get about 1/3rd of my work done weed eating around the property. Then I have to take a shower because I'm covered in particles, meaning a 1 day job turns into a 3 day job because of having to charge the battery

I didn't realize my EGO multi attachment spins CCW. It's a good thing because by default, I stand on the right side. I don't think I got it in me to get used to holding it on the left side.
To fix the string issue dunk your roll of string in soapy water and it makes it straighten when it comes out and also makes it cut a straight edge instead of looping out
Love this guy! Very thorough ever time! I’ve watched all his videos and have bought all the merchandise, including the $99 dollar #2 pencil!! Way to go, sir!!
A tip that you didn't mention that not alot of weedeater operaters know about is the underhand throttle grip. It's better for wrist fatigue and weedeater control. As well as it levels the head of the weedeater for a more effective pass. Your throttle hand is palm facing up with your thumb on top and your throttle using your middle and ring finger
I have a question, I just purchased a new fs61r and it spins ccw, yet, in the manual I found online and in most videos I've watched people using ccw trimmers stand to the left of the trimmer, I tried standing to the right of the trimmer as you suggest and I had a very difficult time... what do you think I'm doing wrong? Standing to the right of the trimmer, left hand on the throttle, right hand on the handle, feels super weird to me, any feedback, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers sir, good info here, thank you!
First tip is in the intro to the video on what not to do. Do NOT bump your trimmer head on grass, it will push the head down allowing the string to cut half an inch or more into the grass. Creating this odd looking disk shape pattern in the middle of what would or could have been a good cut. If possible; find a hard surface to bump the head on to avoid getting fired.
Simi pro... Used to do it as a full time job but for a few years and years way back... I don't use a guard because it hampers the performance of the machine like one commented treat it with respect, respect others around and property, it goes a long way. Second...Being at six foot, I prefer to widening the handel all the down do to the fact, handling and feel of not having my arms close together, specially in tall grass more so tall weeds wear I'm welling it back and forth all day... Works good like that on hill side to as you'll find yourself lifting it up quite a bit...
Great video! One thing on tip 1 is that you should avoid having the clippings go away from you if you are trimming by a mulch or plant bed, because you’re gonna get clippings all over it. If that’s not a problem for you then all power to ya. But personally I will be walking the other way. I am not getting hit by debris, and do you want to know why? Because of that shield guard. It’s there for a reason.
I had to go in the garage to see which way my trimmer rotates. Since the guard cutter is on the right of my old cheapie B&D and still on the right of my EGO Line IQ wonderful trimmer, I'll just keep doing what I was doing.
Yeah those guards aren't the best, I get debris thrown at me all the time, so much so that I continue to wear safety glasses, especially when hitting that overgrown stuff under the hedge 🤦
i use the ryobi 40v epand it weed eater and i love it!! even when moving slow while edging wth the weed eater, the string still gets eaten down and i am having bump feed a lot and replace the string at least twice a month!?? how can i make the string last longer to replace every 3 to 6 months to save money on string!?😢😢
Great video and tips are very good. It.s incredibly harder to operate a trimmer in my country. Unfortunately I have to do it every summer. Mediterranean vegetation is a lot rougher and if string is not at least in the thickness of 3,8 or 4,3, it would break in seconds.
Throughout the WHOLE Mediterranean region, the vegetation is tougher than anything we would be cutting in the US? Hmm. Well that doesn’t sound right. That’s an incredibly broad statement!
Is there a rule of thumb of how long to have the string, just bought a house and have a yard now and will need to get good with one of these for my fence area and edges
Now if I could only get a guard/deflector that would let me trim right up to hedgerow stems. A tree trunk is "easy" since you can walk around it. The hedgerows are another matter - especially when they are a random pattern of plants - and sometimes a "double row" of plants. EdgeIt Pro looks like it might work or simply a stationary disc to keep the trimmer head just far enough away to not damage the stems.
You forgot to add the 8 years of schooling at loserville U that really puts the “pro” into string trimmer technician. The two rio grande swimmers I got are wizards on the string trimmer. You could learn a lot from them .
LOL - I hope you not suggesting that you hire employees that have entered this country illegally. I know that we agree that doing so would be very un American.
Yeah - I operated one of these things a few days ago for the first time and was completely covered with debris 😂Anyway, love the Dewalt 54V trimmer 🙋🏻♀️Anna
What debris? I use mine bare footed and wearing shorts and I have never had anything hit me. Even when cutting grass with pebbles up against a wall. Please.
Andrew, do you have any recommendations/preference for the actual string you like to use in your EGO string trimmer? I have used several different brands over the years and I'm currently looking at the EGO Premium Twist Line AL2470B. Have you tried this EGO twist line? Does anyone else have recommendations? Thank you, Bill
Is there a way to reverse the spin of the head on an Ego trimmer? I just bought one and it spins the opposite of the one I have been using for years and it's going to be hard to learn to use it from the other side.
Some go left, some right so you stand either one way or another, something to do with alternative current i believe but make no difference just stand and swing ti your left or right!

Thanks for the information, now I'm doing the trimming the right way.

Yes - it is the new version of the powerload
I have 2 of the older Ego trimmers and I love them.
Great machines
Why are you walking forward to edge for a clockwise head? I thought you were supposed cut in the direction of the head?
Would a face and ear guard not be a reasonable idea?
face for sure - not sure how helpful the ear guards would be - that is often to protect from noise
Is the Fs61r and Echo or Stihl by chance? That model sounds familiar
Great job telling them about the rotation
Thanks mate
Clockwise the best to do lines ..
First tip is in the intro to the video on what not to do. Do NOT bump your trimmer head on grass, it will push the head down allowing the string to cut half an inch or more into the grass. Creating this odd looking disk shape pattern in the middle of what would or could have been a good cut. If possible; find a hard surface to bump the head on to avoid getting fired.
true
Not a good idea to tell people to take of the guard - it could save one persons eyesight
I wish you would have addressed guard on vs guard off, and using a harness or shoulder strap. But thanks for the tips.
Taking the guard off makes the tool less safe to use - that is not for me
Great video!
Thanks mate - these are just general tips. I'm sure we all find our own comfort level to get things done....
Also, White fence throwing the debris on it is not nice.
Im nervous of trimmers i definitely used the guard and dont raise it i want to keep my legs safe 😊
i use the ryobi 40v epand it weed eater and i love it!! even when moving slow while edging wth the weed eater, the string still gets eaten down and i am having bump feed a lot and replace the string at least twice a month!?? how can i make the string last longer to replace every 3 to 6 months to save money on string!?😢😢
Try flower arrangement wire, worked a treat for me!
I think the first clip of tip #3 is CCW and the second is CW.
Can you do at-house demonstrations? Weekly would be best until about September so I get all the useful information beyond this video.
Come on over - anything you need to see
@@Kitearmy I was hoping you could visit Austin for weekly demos 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great content regardless if you can't make it!
@@jasonwojcik I was thinking daily, but okay, weekly it is
Great video and tips are very good. It.s incredibly harder to operate a trimmer in my country. Unfortunately I have to do it every summer. Mediterranean vegetation is a lot rougher and if string is not at least in the thickness of 3,8 or 4,3, it would break in seconds.
Oh no!
Throughout the WHOLE Mediterranean region, the vegetation is tougher than anything we would be cutting in the US? Hmm. Well that doesn’t sound right. That’s an incredibly broad statement!
I love loading string it lets me have a sit down and refill the machine and myself before going back at it again.
Cool
Could you talk about manual lawn edgers?
yes
I check your link for the trimmer but I do not see which one is clockwise?
Is there a rule of thumb of how long to have the string, just bought a house and have a yard now and will need to get good with one of these for my fence area and edges
for most applications keep it as long as possible - if you need more control shorter is okay

Very helpful for me. Thanks.
Thanks mate
Great video! Thanks much!
My pleasure!
i thought you forgot how to keep the head of the trimmer while you cut (at what angle).
Yeah - I operated one of these things a few days ago for the first time and was completely covered with debris 😂Anyway, love the Dewalt 54V trimmer 🙋🏻♀️Anna
Hopefully these tips help
Great tips . thanks for sharing 👍👏
You are so welcome!
Great video. Very informative. Thank you
Very welcome
What debris? I use mine bare footed and wearing shorts and I have never had anything hit me. Even when cutting grass with pebbles up against a wall. Please.
I get a stone every now and then
Is the blade made of the same material as the trimmer guard?
nope - the blade is metal
Great,Informative Video..😄👌👏.
This is a native handle holder on the trimer
Another tip, bumping on pavers or concrete destroys the plastic on your trimmer head. Always do it on what you're cutting.
Andrew, do you have any recommendations/preference for the actual string you like to use in your EGO string trimmer? I have the EGO ST1521S with the PowerLoad head and a carbon fiber shaft, which uses a 0.095" line. I have used several different brands over the years and I'm currently looking at the EGO Premium Twist Line AL2470B. Have you tried this EGO twist line? Does anyone else have recommendations?
Thank you, Bill
The EGO twist line loads very reliably in the EGO powerload models
Is there a way to reverse the spin of the head on an Ego trimmer? I just bought one and it spins the opposite of the one I have been using for years and it's going to be hard to learn to use it from the other side.
Some go left, some right so you stand either one way or another, something to do with alternative current i believe but make no difference just stand and swing ti your left or right!
