    thank you so much for the video and all the amazing info in the comments. I tried 2 air layered emperor (one outdoor in CA and one indoor in AZ) and both died. Very little roots. Now I tried few times with seedlings and finally I have 4 little guys growing (indoor in AZ, about 6h of sun/day in the winter). I watched many of your videos to learn more about watering, soil, fertilizing, and what they like, because I am getting some brown spots, probably not enough drainage, not enough water, soil too alkaline and no mulch - I will correct those and see what happens. If not doing well, I will drive to Florida to buy one from you...One way or another I will get lychee.

      Buy a tree and don't invest too much time in seedling lychee trees. Make sure the tree is a named variety that is well known. Also, they need plenty of water, organic fertilizer and mulch. Just saw this so sorry for the late response.

    Cheers Pepe!
    I am a little amazed to see you growing lychees as I had read years ago that they would only fruit in China in localities where a certain bacteria was present in the environment. I have raised plants from seeds before but did not think they were worth allowing to progress into fruiting sized plants for that reason.

      HI Michael, Yes Lychee trees grow in Subtropical climates and they are all over South Florida. The seed grown trees are not the way to go if you want fruit within a few years. Get a tree in a 7 gal or 15 gal container from a reputable nursery. They will offer you a tree that is air layered (Marcotted) the tree will be an exact clone and able to produce fruit. Hakip, Sweetheart, Brewster, Mauritius are some of the more popular and well known varieties. Take care man it's lychee season in Florida and they are delicious!!! :-) Not aware of a requirement for a special bacteria in the soil.

    i found more videos, Yay!
    Quick question: for #1 and #6, can I apply the minerals and spray the same time when i fertilize in spring and summer or must they be done at different times? if so, how long apart?
    thank you- again

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  5 лет назад +2

      I prefer separate applications about 3 weeks apart spring and summer depending on the trees needs. I look at leaves and overall growth for hints of possible nutrient deficiencies. It takes time to get the hang of it. Many factors can influence the growth. Time of the year, rain, temperatures, soil and more. Go with a weak solution more frequently to be safe. Don't over do it. They benefit from good organic nutrients.
      More Tips:
      Here are are some of the most common issues you may encounter when growing your lychee trees. This section is set up based on the questions I often get regarding lychee growing.
      How do I keep birds away from eating my fruit?
      The most effective way to stop them is to net the tree. Other methods that may work to some extent would be plastic hawks and owls placed near the trees.Sometimes it scares the bad little birdies away.
      What is eating my leaves and leaving missing chunks around the edges?
      Caterpillars and leaf-eating beetles (Leaf Notchers) attack new, leaves. This is a big concern when trees are weak and more than 20 percent of the leaf flushes are damaged. Large and healthy trees typically bounce back and spraying may not be required. Young trees really need to be protected and sprayed. Chose organic pesticides for everyone's health and safety!
      Why does my fruit split?
      This can happen anytime excessive rain prevails for longer than normal. It is more commonly an issue where insufficient watering early in the season is followed by heavy rain storms. The sudden additional water causes the fruit to swell and split.
      Poor tree root health can also contribute to the problem. You can reduce fruit splitting by maintaining a uniform soil moisture during the fruits growth. Practice heavy mulching and be sure the trees are getting sufficient calcium. This also happens regularly in over watered container grown trees. Often times, over watering causes trees to die as a result of root rot.
      Why are my leaves distorted and have bumps?
      Distorted leaves, with or without bumps are symptoms of damage caused by insects. Often times the insects are mites, leaf miners and caterpillars. Herbicidal spray drift can also cause a distorted appearance. Young trees are highly affected. A copper deficiency will often times also be recognized by leaf distortion and curling.
      Why are my leaves turning brown around the edges?
      Brown edges are usually a sign of one or more of the following: Under watering of trees, salty irrigation water, applying too much fertilizer (particularly nitrogen or boron) It is a good idea to do a leaf and water analysis and review the results. If the tests indicate all is normal you should, review your watering schedule.

      Why are my lychee trees flowering but not producing fruiting?
      This occurs for the following reasons:The tree produces only male flowers.
      Sometimes trees flower very early and produce only male flowers, no fruit can set without pollination. Poor pollination: Pollination sensitivity to the weather may result from low humidity, high and low temperature extremes and even overcast conditions. Pesticides: Excessive pesticide use and poor timing of the application can kill insect pollinators and reduce fruit set.
      My trees are setting fruit, but it drops off. Why?
      Unfortunately, lychee trees sometimes set more fruit than they can handle, causing excess fruit drop. The fruit drop is more common in trees that are stress. Stress can be a factor of unusual temperatures, nutrient deficiencies and prolonged drought.
      Green fruit can also drop due to insects (especially stink bugs) feeding on the young green immature fruit. To confirm that insects are the issue, you can cut open fallen fruit and look for light brown/tan lesions on the seed or brown spots inside the skin. Stop the damage before it ruins the crop by applying an appropriate insecticide.
      What are the large black and brown marks on my fruit?
      Young immature fruit is sometimes damaged by insects, branch and leaf rub or stresses such as drought, excessive heat and nutrient imbalances. These factors can damage cells on the fruits skin. As the fruit grows, more cells around the damaged area die, causing the brown marks to become larger and more noticeable.
      My fruit has holes in it or is lleaking?
      Holes in the fruit are often due to insect pests that include fruit piercing insects and boring caterpillars. Examine and squeeze the damaged fruit. If the hole squirts out juice then insects are the culprits. most of these bad bugs can be controlled with Thurcide or Spinosad.

    Do they need grafting like mango tree? Or the fruits can grow without grafting?

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  7 лет назад +1

      The best way is to do an air layer aka marcotting. That gives you an exact duplicate or clone that can produce fruit the next season. Seeds will germinate easily but you would have to wait many years on average 5-10 years in some cases and the fruit if any is a gamble. I have not seen grafting done but it's probably possible. I have seen grafting of longan trees in some cases. Thanks for visiting my channel. :-)

    How big should my container be if I want to grow the lychee in a container?

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  7 лет назад +1

      That depends on the size of the tree really. A five foot tree can produce fruit if an air layered tree. Usually a 7 gal container will work and a 15 gal for say a seven footer. Good soil good drainage and plenty of water and sun. Best wishes happy growing!!

    Hi, I have my lychee seedling in a new pot and today i noticed that the tap root [the thickest root] grew out from the bottom via a drainage hole. I decided to prune it, but i'm worried that this will affect my seedling. The reason I pruned it was because i had left the roots on another seedling grow out of their small pot and it started to wilt from what i guessed was most likely root rot as the exposed roots had died. Could pruning the tap root also cause root rot?

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  5 лет назад

      Lychee seedlings are tricky to get going. Cutting the tap root should be O.K. The tool used was clean and sharp right? You don't want to spread disease. For a field planting the tap root is important to help anchor the tree reach water etc. If you plan on growing in pots no worries. A healthy tree will have lots of lateral roots.

    What time of year do they usually flower ?. Im growing one inside in the UK using 1x 300 watt cfl grow light and 1x 300w Mars led grow light and its putting on loads of new leaves, and the leaves are getting huge, they all look happy anyway. Its a 4 foot air layer I think as it has all the grower branding on the label etc (was imported). I just need to simulate the right time of year day length to get it to flower.

    Hello, I recently purchased a Hak Ip Lychee tree, and it's about 3-4ft tall. I heard they are fussy to deal with..any truth to that? What would be the soil conditions? Acidic soil? I'm considering planting this in the ground but if not, maybe in a container. I've read that Lychee is more of a Sub-tropical tree than tropical. I live in zone 10a Northern California where my weather isn't hot but a temperate cool summers and winters are only down to rare 35 degrees but mostly 40's. Just seeking advice thank you and love the channel!

    hello, just wanna ask, i want to grow lychee in a container, is 30gal container ok? n is it better for a low n wide one or skinny and tall one. wat kind of soil i need, pot mixxing one or garden soil, which one is best with mycorrhizas fungi, thanks

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  7 лет назад

      How big is your tree? You need to use potting soil not garden soil. When you plant a tree in a pot you go up gradually from say a 3 gal to a 7 or a 10 gal. A 7 gal goes to a 15 gal. Once the tree is in a 15 gal and is well rooted go to a 25 or a 30. You then prune the tree to maintain a manageable size and you also root prune once a year. Make sure the container grown tree gets nutrients on a steady basis at the appropriate times during the year. Fertilizers leach out fast from container plants. Happy Growing! : >-)

    Hallo! Nice vid! I wonder if you can help me with a promblem with my lychee tree...its about one meter high ,i grow it in Greece, and its having lychees that fell off the tree after two, three weeks growing :( is this a watering problem? Especially at summer with temperatures almost 40 degrees celcius i water it day by day...

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  6 лет назад

      Does it hold onto any fruit or all drops off? It is normal for a small tree to shed fruit if it is immature and unable to handle a heavy crop load. You may have a nutrient deficiency, lack of sunlight. Did you water heavily when the flowers started to emerge?
      That is when you need to water heavily to minimize stress. Hope this helps, all the best.

      If your tree was a seedling you may have a long wait for it to mature. Grafted trees produce quickly. They like full sun and moist well drained soil. A regular monthly fertilizer like 10-10-10 or similar works well. Only fertilizer in spring and summer. Best wishes

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  Год назад

      Most lychee, Litchi are propagated by air layering. That creates a clone and they fruit within a year or two but depends on how much chiil hours they get. If they are treated too well with plenty of water and lots of fertilizer sometimes that actually inhibits fruit production. Fertilizer needs to be slow release if synthetic and best practice is to use organic fertilizers monthly. Plenty of mulch to protect the roots. A little stress not too much always helps trees to fruit. Also only prune after the harvest or you probably wont get fruit either.

      If it was an air layer then it should produce fruit within a year or two. If it was a seed grown tree who knows? Could take 20 years or 5 years. Your climate and sufficient chill are also factors. Assuming it was an air layered tree or a graft you might girdle a few branches to promote fruiting. hey can I grow lychee in California

    • @Pepesplants
      @Pepesplants  7 лет назад

      Yes you can. Don't know your location. California is a big State.
      Here are some tips:
      Lychee trees need to be protected from frost until about 3 years old. Mature trees They can survive temperatures as low as 26 degrees F for short periods of time. The tees originate from China where winters are dry and summers hot and very humid. Do you have this climate? That is the climate they require in order to set fruit.
      They are Subtropical trees. Lychee trees need a seasonal variation in temperature to produce fruit. The chilling requirement is estimated to be about 100 to 200 hours. Chill temp begin at 45 degrees F and as low as 32.
      All the best and thanks for visiting my channel.
