- Building your own off road trailer
This video will take you through steps on how I built this off road camping trailer for a fraction of what it costs to build one outright.
Camping and Jeeps seem to go hand in hand, and my enjoyment of going off road in my Jeeps led to me building this trailer, but it all started with a kayak.
A few years back, I purchased a folding trailer to haul my kayaks and paddle board. I built a little platform on it to double my space, and the trailer did well for me. I enjoyed family time at the lake camping and being out on the water, and being the Boy Scout that I am, tent camped most of the time.
But as we know Mother Nature has a mind Of her own and all too often this, turned into this with unexpected storms, and that made tent camping rough for my little ones especially. I looked into a small camping trailer to pull with my Jeep, and was surprised at how expensive many of the options were, with some costing anywhere from $10k to $30K dollars.
So I decided I could build something to meet my needs, and that’s just what I did. Starting with the folding trailer, I attached 1/2” plywood tonthe floor with high grade bolts, waterproofed the underside, and framed the walls with 2 x 3’s (as you would a house with 2x4’s) every 16”. I used vinyl hopper windows, wired the trailer for lights and power with the help of my neighbor, and installed double garage door foam insulation and wood paneling on the interior walls and ceiling. Once the plywood was attached to the exterior into the 2x3’s, I sealed every joint and screw hole with waterproof caulk and used aluminum to trim the corners.
I painted the entire exterior with a high quality exterior primer and topcoat. The axles on this little trailer weren’t sufficient, so I had a 3500 lb. axle custom made to fit a 5 on 5 bolt pattern to run stock 32” Jeep Wrangler wheels and tires.
Standard plug-in 120v power was run in the front of the trailer, and as an alternate source to campground hookup and to give myself the ability to be off the grid, I built a removable locking quiet box for my generator also out of plywood, aluminum, and the same primer and paint. Exhaust is on one side and the intake on the other.
I used Jeep Wrangler TJ fenders and trimmed the exterior with a second accent color.
The floor was finished with vinyl tile for easy cleanup, and everything trimmed out in white. I installed a removable 5000 btu AC unit, which was inexpensive and easily replaceable should any issues arise. Three power outlets and dimmable LED ceiling lighting wire installed in the interior, and I purchased a memory foam mattress that doubled as a chair. The door was made out of three gorilla glued layers of plywood, trimmed airtight with weatherstripping, and finished with a locking exterior door handle.
To finish off the trailer I purchased the Smittybilt Overlander XL Roof top tent, and attached it to the steel roof rack I made out of super strut, which was primed, painted, and screwed into the 2x3’s in the roof. I used a trimmed stock JK Wrangler tire carrier for the spare, and the trailer was ready to put to the test!
Oh, and in case you were wondering, I found a new place to haul a few kayaks....
Overall the trailer worked great, offering sleeping for five between the camper itself and the tent. At less than 1200 pounds and a narrow profile, it pulled very easily with my Jeep and provided lots of cargo space for long trips. It took us on a few adventures and was a fun and rewarding project that all in cost less than $2000.
The trailer eventually found a new home to make room in the garage for other projects, but I plan to start another one in the future.
With time, planning, and determination, you can build one too.
Thank you for watching, and see you on the trails!

Do you and your wife sleep in the trailer and the kiddos in the tent? I would think that its safer for the children to sleep in the trailer as it has a lockable door. Have you ever heard of Runaway Campers? WeeRoll trailers?
Building is way better than buying, companies put the worst materials in to their products and sells them for many times the cost, even when certain ones do a decent job they charge even more. Good for you for using your head!
Robert Forester thank you, even with the time involved I feel like I came out ahead and learned some things along the way.
@@AmericanJeeper Exactly learning is a huge benefit to making your own. I know for people in my age group we didn't grow up working on cars and building houses so learning with projects like this really helps teach us useful life skills
Robert Forester plus the sense of accomplishment is nice too. I am really thinking about getting another one started after I get my Jeep a little more squared away. Thank you for the kind words!
American Jeeper Yeah you should do another one that would be great and make another video! Thank you as well have a good one
Robert Forester likewise 😀
This exact trailer now resides in Manhattan Kansas to be used by Olympus Reptiles when we travel (and expand our filming to more animals in nature to go with breeding). Our patreon members helped us purchase it, and came up with the name Haulin' Balls for it. I have yet to use it on actual camping, but have pulled it and set it up a few times for trial and error prior. I can say it is built well, simple to use and I can't wait to put it on a few trips behind my jeep.
Olympus Reptiles very nice-glad you surfaced here! Super glad you are enjoying the trailer and love the name!

VERY interested! I think I'm going to start on a 5x8 and try to do something identical
vanillagorilla911 you’ll have a blast with it!
Where did you get the door for this?
Bryson Jeppesen I made it. I cut to size and Gorilla-glued three pieces of plywood together, sealed the outside, and just had to buy door knob. Made the door frame too.
This is an amazing video and when I get more money in a little while I plan to build a trailer using your video as a guide. Also I am an Eagle Scout from troop 5 in b-ham, im assuming by the way that you made these plans and executed them well that you are an Eagle Scout too.
Thanks for sharing this build American Jeeper! I've been tossing around the idea of buying vs. building a similar set up. You've inspired me, as a handy guy, to build out a camper trailer that will work for my family and I without killing the budget.
Timothy Taylor my pleasure and I love knowing that you are going for it! I am sure it will be a fun project, and I would love to see the steps and results. Are you going to document the build anywhere?

I've nearly overloaded on youtube diy camper build ideas not finding any I particularly liked.Until yours, it really describes and illustrates exactly what I have in mind. thanks!
I am glad you like it and thank you for the compliments. Good luck with your build!
The weather is why I built a teardrop camper I just wish it was this nice, love the paint and fenders
Next one extend the fenders out and use that space for storage. Tool box on one side and jack/stands. Also in front you can add shovel, tools that clamp in place. Have fun with it! Great Work btw. People shouldn’t fear Wood as most OL camper makers are not using wood when it’s actually in some cases stronger than aluminium
Would have built the frame out of steel but solely because i possess the skills and tools to weld it. I honestly love the simplicity of your design and simplicity of the construction process. As admittedly stronger a steel frame would be, wood is more than enough for 99% of humanity to live with. Steel is really overkill and overweight. Still love it
Callsign Nomad thank you for the kind words. I think I’ll go with steel on the next one!

Awesome job, was looking around for ideas on a good platform to go off of. You answered that with the harbor freight trailer! 👍
Thank you!
Pretty cool build. And all out of a Harbor Freight folding trailer base. Smart upgrade on the axle.
Thank you!
Good job. I built my Bug Out on a Harbor Freight trailer. My trailer came in at 372lbs and cost $1200.00 to build. Super cheap if you can do it yourself for sure. See you on the trails, George.

Nice touch putting a spare on the back of the trailer. That looks amazing! I think my plan is to get a truck that can tow my Jeep and then I’ll put a tent over the bed somehow.
Jameson Miller thank you. That’s a great idea on the truck-maybe a Gladiator?
@@AmericanJeeper Ha, I'd love a Gladiator for that purpose, but it would tie up too much cash flow that could be used to build my JL Rubi. I'm looking for a 3/4 ton truck that's ~10 years old. Something that can tow 10k pretty easily.

Nice work. Great creativity. One thought, everyone these days uses the "smug hipster" jingle music - you know, the music that screams "look at me make a cup of coffee for 39 minutes straight and check out this table I made from the dried bark of an acacia". Hard to explain but it just sounds like a Subaru commercial. Rant over. Great work.

Getting ready to order a #3500 axle for my HF trailer. Only springs i can find are double eye and not slipper so will need to weld on rear hangers. But i need it because i roll heavy and plan to rebuild the body on it. I build odd stuff but it's fun to do. You did a great job on this one.
Ramblin Rogers sounds like you are up to the task. I kept my springs but considered having a leaf or two added. Thank you-how heavy are you going?
@@AmericanJeeper fully loaded we were around #1900 on a #2000 axle. Pulled it from south florida to western washington though. But with that much the tires wore only on the inside because the axle tube was flexed beyond the straight point. A #3500 axle and a lenth of square steel tubing under the tongue should get it to where i need. This will be my spring project. Going solid sides and not a folder like it was before. You can see what it looked like on my channel if you like, just scroll down to before the vardo trailer build. I'm no pro but i do like building things.

Looks like he used 12-2 Romex wiring. You'd wire all the outlets and then use a male connection to plug it into the generator. Pretty easy to do. Another option would be to either use a solar setup or a power station like a Goal Zero Yeti, then you wouldn't have the noise or fumes of a gas generator.

Are the HF trailers even worth the savings? While it's some work - I bought a junked 14' camper (for the frame) for $200, gave the shell away (free!), sold the old axle/wheels for $50, upgraded to a 3500# axle and wheels for $150 (axle/bolts/leafs) + $170 (rims/tires). Scraped the paint, repainted for about $75. All in at at ~$545.
