  • After several weeks we're back to our country home. When there is no snow, it's not that interesting out here in winter, but we still need to come here every now and then to check if everything is ok. It wasn't and we were greeted by an unpleasant surprise right when we arrived.

    Hi Tommy and Peter! I continue to be amazed at how well you guys work together to harvest your fruits, can and/or dehydrate them, as well as freeze some of them! It’s clear that you guys do not have an aversion to hard, tedious work! It’s great to see you guys making use of the nuts, fruits, and vegetables grown at your country home! That’s outstanding! I understand what you mean about winter being somewhat depressing when the trees are barren, and the flowers are not blooming! However, you still manage to get outside and find areas in which to explore! In the previous vlog, when you were discussing that you are both introverts and preferred to be with each other, I totally got that, since you both are similar, and you have each other. That is very special! I also want to mention that you guys post a vlog every Thursday, without fail! I’m not a vlogger, but I can appreciate how much work is involved in making that happen! I look forward to your vlog each Thursday! However, because I watch your vlogs on my smart tv, I then have to use my iPad to comment, which does not always happen when I actually watch the vlog. I will try to be more timely with commenting, however. Have a great week!

      Hi Will! We appreciate you commenting on our videos, especially since you need another device to do that. It's nice to see some people watching our videos on TV. Nowadays most people watch RUclips on their phones where they might miss some details. We're surprised ourselves that we've managed to post a new video every week for almost two years. We didn't expect that when we started 😃
      We love how much produce our land offers. Last year was really exceptional so we expect less fruit this year. On the other hand we planted a lot of new trees and shrubs so we should have even more fruit in the upcoming years. We can't wait!

It is very unusual to have mild temperatures in January. 🤔 Seeing the approaching fog bank and Peter’s enthusiasm was fun to watch. Here in the middle of Canada, we often have a fridge/freezer in the garage. It gets very cold here in the winter. The conventional wisdom here is to unplug a fridge/freezer when the temperature inside the garage drops to +4C (39F). That is often said to be the lowest temp at which such units should operate. According to Google, some people report that their fridge/freezer actually start heating-up inside at such temperatures. I can't help but wonder if maybe that's what happened to your fridge/freezer(?). In my experience, older fridges & freezers last a LONG time and are much better at cooling than their modern equivalents (unless of course they loose their coolant). Don't be too quick to get rid of an older unit. It may be because it is running in too cold an environment. Just a thought. 😁

    • @PAfarmboy
      @PAfarmboy 2 года назад +2

      A good point. I was going to mention that to them. Here in the northern US, most "newer" refrigerators will not cycle correctly in a cold house or in an unheated space. It will make you think it is broken. I just searched online. Some manufacturers say the room air temperature must be above 50 F/10 C for the motor and condenser to work properly. Others say above 60 F/15.5 C. If that is the problem, buying a new refrigerator will not help them.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 года назад +1

      You're most probably right, guys! The fridge seems to be working fine when we're here, but it malfunctions when nobody's home (and the heating's off). I heard about fridge climate classes, but I never realized it could cause the fridge not to work properly. Our fridge is designed to function at 10+°C but it was only 7-8°C when we were gone. We'll keep testing it to prove that theory 😃

  • @donwolverton6222
    @donwolverton6222 2 года назад +2

    I was thinking it might be your surge protector is going bad. But when someone else mentioned your not heating the country home when you are not there. That could very well be the problem. Had you had this happen other years. Or did you heat the house those winters.
    Your fruit harvest looked amazing. I'm so jealous. With our spring we did not have any fruit this year. However the weather did not seem to stop the black walnuts. I picked up a full pickup bed full of them.
    A little different then your thin shelled walnuts. We have to use a vice to crack ours open LOL . Just a little more work, but the flavor is worth the work.
    You boys stay safe and warm bye.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 года назад +1

      Indeed, the low outside temperature might very well be the issue. We used to turn the fridge off the previous two winters, so this is the first winter when it keeps running constantly. Our freezer in the city was too full, which is why we kept the rest of the fruits at the country home. We'll keep testing it, but it makes sense now that we think about it.
      Sorry about your lack of harvest. If we could send you some of our apples, we would 😁
      I'm not sure we would have time for your walnuts, we still need to finish working on the rest of ours!

    Your reverence for nature, environment, self-reliance, and healthy living are very inspirational. I wish more people in the states appreciated and cultivated fruit, nuts, and berries as you do. Personal gardens made a small comeback in 2020/2021, but in Europe they have been part of village life for centuries. Also inspiring is the amount of time you guys spend preserving your bounty. Keep it up!

    • @tommyandpeter

      Thanks, Brian! Personal gardens and allotments have always been very popular in our country, not only in villages but in cities as well. Even people who don't own a garden and live in an apartment often rent an allotment to grow veggies. Gardening is a very popular hobby here. Once all our new trees and shrubs start producing fruits, we'll be able to feed the whole village 😃

    Another good video. I viewed the one from last week and enjoyed it but never got the time to answer. Always things going on in the country that need attending to. Our weather the past two weeks has been good. Not too cold, the temperature hovers between 30 F in the mornings to the mid to upper 50's F in the afternoon with very little rain when the northern fronts come through. Every once in a while the afternoon temperature reaches into the mid to high 70"F. We do get frequent fog when the temperature rises.
    Really enjoyed you walk, no so much the mud but the forest roads and the very green fields. Here the sugar cane harvesting and grinding season are coming to an end. The sugar mill should be shutting down in another week.
    Can't get over how many apples you guys harvested and how you preserve them. A good walnut crop this year. Our pecan crop where I live was virtually nothing, not worth picking. It appears that we get a bumper crop every second and third year. All depends on the weather and the amount of rain we get when the nuts should be forming.
    Sure hope you can resolve the fridge problem. Good idea to transfer to the other fridge for now.
    Hope you stay well and you get at least one last snow storm. Covid is rampant again in this state but not much is being done or enforced as no one listens or tries to follow policy. Such selfish people. Tony

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 года назад

      Hi Tony, don't worry about commenting. We're still happy you found some time to watch both videos 😊 It sounds like your winter is quite warm, we don't hit 70 degrees here until March or later.
      The walk in the forest was very pleasant, once we didn't have to worry about the mud. Unfortunately we always need to get through the mud first, since it's right at our doorstep. It would be nice if we could harvest our own sugar cane, but you can't have everything, that's how climate works.
      We keep dehydrating our apples almost every day (when we're at our country home) but it's going quite slowly. It looks like we had a bumper crop last year, so we don't expect much this year, I'm sure a lot of trees will need to rest. So we better preserve as much as we can.
      We had a record number of COVID cases before Christmas, then it was decreasing for a few weeks, but this week it's going back up thanks to Omicron. We'll see how big of an effect it will have on hospitalizations.

    Rather than a hammer, invest in a Nutcracker, Peter...$2.50US$!! The hammer is too labor intensive...and having a nutcracker would cut the cost of manicures for Tommy!!! Lol! Also, it's possible to purchase or lease or exchange National Forest land, or an existing Forest here, but the legal and technical issues involved, like you in your Country, are supposedly a huge nightmare. So, continue planting at your Country Home and you'll have a beautiful forest in 10 years...give or take. Stay well guys. Cheers!

    It could be that it got too cold inside the house for the fridge to work. They need a certain ambient temperature to function, and you commented that you don't leave the heating on. People here try and put fridges and freezers out in garages but they don't work. I remember when my parents had a country cottage that they had to empty the fridge and turn it off when they left as they weren't able to leave the heating on, it was a coal fired boiler. So your fridge could be working ok when you're there and the heating is on.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 года назад

      That's a really good point, thanks for mentioning that! At first we thought it was because there was too much ice in the freezer and it needed to be defrosted, but if that doesn't help, it'll be probably the low house temperature. Our fridge is designed to operate at 10+°C and it was 7-8°C while we were gone. We'll keep testing your theory 😊

    Hi Fellas..
    Iv had problems with freezers not working in commercial kitchens in the past.. Start cheap by replacing the adapter you are using to plug the fridge into..These over heat or diminish through time.. No sign of ware and tare need to be eve dent for this to happen.. Leave a plastic container in the freezer when you are not there with water in it..See if it is frozen when you return.. Also look at plug and check for any signs of ware.. Strip plug down if necessary and bare fresh wires in the plug.. Check the lead is connected correctly to the fridge.. both ends with no brakes in the cable.. if all is well then the thermostat regulator in the fridge may be faulty and worth looking at replacing it.. this may be cheaper than a new fridge.. Hope that may help.. Freezer should be

    Oh yeah. It was really an unpleasant surprise for you!! I think it would be convenient to subject those fruits to heat before consuming them. Sorry, maybe I'm sensitized because there were some cases of botulism here in my country last week
    Pecan walnuts are also very popular in Argentina.
    Here all the country is going through a heat wave that the forecast says it will end this weekend. Fingers crossed.
    Now in my city ( Paraná/Entre Rios/Argentina) 42 degrees Celsius ( and 131.000 cases of covid yesterday in all the country).
    Kisses and good week lovely boys.

      You're right, we should be careful when eating the fruit. But we weren't 😄 We already ate some of it (just a very small part) and fortunately nothing happened. I think (I hope) that since the fruit was partially still frozen, there was no time for any bacteria to spread. But maybe we'll be more careful with the rest anyway.
      Pecan nuts are not very common here, we have our European walnuts instead. So pecans are a bit of a rarity for us.
      42°C is so hot! We've never experienced such heat, the all time record in the Czech Republic is around 41 degrees.

    Been there done that - had an entire chest freezer to "bail out" it wasn't pleasant (thermostat on the fridge went). If you do replace it id strongly recommend one with a completely separate freezer.

      We've been actually thinking about buying a completely standalone freezer in addition to a fridge to store all the produce we harvest. From what we've been reading, it should be more reliable and should work better at lower temperatures.

    Yeah, I'm glad you're going to replace that mini-fridge, because if it's technically failed twice, once while you were away and once after Peter's dad fixed it and got it working again, then definitely, I wouldn't have any trust in it, either.
    I loved that walk you went on together. It was so lovely and the mist that covered everything definitely had a magickal quality to it, which I love. The way your country house almost disappeared was like all the old fantasy tales from Europe that I read as a child. The descriptions of the mists and fogs in European fairy tales were always so detailed and enchanting, giving you a very distinct idea of how a place must have looked (or not looked, if obscured by the mists) against that kind of fogginess.
    A bit less happening than in some of your videos, but that makes sense, given that it is January, and you say in the video that you typically spend less time there at this time of year. I don't mind that there's less happening, because your videos still possess that kind of magickal quality for me. The house and the food that you've grown and work with to preserve, it's an amazing little world you've created for yourselves there, almost like a fairytale but with more work involved.
    Looking forward to your next video as always, Tommy and Peter! Big hugs to both of you!

      It's so funny to hear you associate mists and fogs with Europe 😃 Don't you get foggy weather? Sometimes the fog is so strong you can only see a few meters ahead of you, but that doesn't happen very often. I certainly wouldn't wanna drive in such a fog. It does create a very mystical atmosphere though. We once spent a whole day hiking in a foggy weather and it felt magical, especially when we were in the woods.

    I think I might know what went wrong. There could have been a power cut for several hours or even days, everything in the freezer defrosted, and the juices from the fruits started to run and dribble out on the floor. Then the power was restored, the fridge and freezer compartment started working again, so when you got there, the fruits were all frozen again.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  2 года назад

      That's a theory we were originally working with as well, but we never get long blackouts here, we've never seen one that would last for days. Sometimes they cut power due to maintenance, but they announce it in advance. Our neighbors didn't tell us about a blackout either, so we ruled that theory out at the end.

    tip for walnuts, maybe you already discovered the way how to dry them without using too much space and in same time big amounts of them. we had 3 huge walnut trees, so amount of walnuts was huge. best way to dry them is when you pick them up while they are still in that green shell ( befoe it becomes black, coz when that shell becomes black it means it rottens and it is filled with wet) to put them in big bags with holes, think rachel is their name ( here usualy potato and onion is sold in them), this one images-popusti.njuskalo.hr/data/image/500x705/12/krumpir-bijeli-vreca-10-kg-metro-57935.jpg and just hang it spmehwere where it cant get wet, it can be warm place or place where some air circulates, important is it does not get wet. coz the green shell will dry too instead to roten, you know it is roten when it is black and all gushy and slimy.. also walnuts can be bad coz of the walnuts flies, that is some kind of walnut parasit wich attacks tree, dont know do you have them there. here they appared in 2015 and can be mistaken for small wasps.. drava.info/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/P1010021.jpg thaz how they look. we would leave them in those bags for few weeks, before cleaning them and storing them.
