(edit: I made this comment before watching the whole thing, sorry about that!) 6:28 that's an interesting design with the transfer ports. They reduced the piston skirts sides to make for a transfer port passage instead of making a hole beside (or sometimes all the way through) the cylinder. The piston ended up looking like a from a 4 stroke dirt bike. I wonder why they went with this design (maybe an attempt to stuff the case?) but man, it does the job really well! I love how it sounds and it seems that the power is really there from down low on the revs. Good stuff!

From what I've seen, the bottom end of this motor including the piston rod are Identical to the YD100. If you swapped the cylinder jug, piston, and added the reed valve and the proprietary exhaust pipe, you'd have a Phantom 85
Yeah by the time you try to do the upgrades to a YD 100 to match the power of that phantom you would’ve spent enough money to get 2 YD 100s I just want to know how much this phantom deal cost delivered to my house I just bought a YD 100 did not take it out the box yet ready to return it now just to get this phantom everything about this motor kit is awesome no complaints I don’t need the huge expansion pipe and The noise it comes with
Have always wondered why there isn't a variator/clutch cvt made for these. Seems like it would help bottom end and allow better gearing. I guess it's just too much. Lower power motors would probably not like the parasitic losses, but it seems like it would be great for something like this. Would probably require a freewheel and pull start tho
They seem to be originally go ped engines, being on the back of a scooter I'd imagine size and placement would be the reasoning. Elsewise you'd essentially have what is the Ruckus-esq design
You need a bike with a bigger frame! With your size its hard to keep your weight from dumping the bike when you are going down hill or turning. That is why taller guys ride bikes with longer frames. A longer frame would help you keep the front end on the ground.
Wish I could justify getting a kit like this but concindering my current engine runs good and I now have a identical spare engine cause got my wife one so we could ride together and it was too much of a pain for her to start and the kit dont really like to ride slow. So we got her a friction drive, making it an automatic and turned out that's perfect. Now she can start it before she gets on the bike and ease up to whatever speed she wants.
Stock mix sounds perfect 4 stroke when you let off is what you want . 25/1 on an air cooled engine with a good load will keep it happy for a long time..My engine after 8 years is still perfect chec it out.
It's not uncommon on the smaller engine MX bikes to have the engine load up with excess fuel after getting out of the throttle. If you watch any MX bike videos you'll notice riders revving out the engine with the clutch feathered in the corners. This is actually for 2 reasons, to control the power delivery and to help clean out the engine before really hammering the throttle before a jump or other obstacle.
@user-vh7ki7xu7o yes, it does not hurt to have the extra fuel and oil coming off wide open throttle like that, two strokes are rather finicky. When they run well, they scream!!
Last year, my personal bike had a genuine zeda motorsports engine (one of the last ones). I dremeled a 3rd transfer port, and cut a window in the piston. I put a oko21 carb on it. It had 36t. It's not a Minarelli or a saw engine, but it did 53mph on a good day. It never ran perfect, and in the end my build was more reliable, and almost as fast, With a mildly ported g4 cylinder and the stock intake and carb. In my opinion... This looks just awesome. No hacking, waiting 3 months for a custom engine, seems like a powerhouse (for a bicycle), and all the parts are made better! $300? $250 for a Minarelli cylinder.. than where do you buy the exhaust and how much $$? Couple of questions my man. Have you ever noticed what is stuffed about the YD bottom ends? Are they considering the larger bearing hub casevcasting as stuffed? Do you get your YD100 to accelerate when going up steep hills? Does your YD100 take off from dead stop? Just wondering because everything you described on this engine I am or was lol getting on my YD100 too. Maybe not as much but curious to know. Perhaps I am doing something correctly. Also pushing my engine to the max detonated the top of my stock piston but luckily the cylinder is unscathed. Waiting on some base gaskets and in will be back in action.
Sound like you got a runner :) good point about the bearing hubs possibly being the stuffing. As for this 85 vs my yd, it's a night and day difference. We did to get to open her up in this video, but soon ;)
I just ordered one for myself xD what do you recommend for tips on installation? Should I grease anything up or is everything ready right out of the box?
When I tested it a few months ago I could instantly see the problem, which unfortunately you didn’t show or notice. The four stroke is caused by the mismatched transfer ports and stroke. There is not a single point in the cycle that the intake port is fully opened. Not a fan personally due to the four stroking. Wait until the OD-911 comes out….hint 54mm 😈. Good vids, bro.
Do you know the hp of this motor? Great test and video I think this motor could work for a jet board , also 32:1 oil ratio seems a lot of oil could it not run 50:1 like an mx bike? Sorry if I seem dumb I have never owned a bicycle motor
The excessive 4 stroking is overly advanced timing, the woodruff key slots are super inconsistent on the cranks I’ve seen so the timings are all over the place. If you try removing the key and carefully retightening the rotor 5-10 degrees CCW of the original spot, I guarantee it’ll be fixed (I had to figure this out myself on some real rough running engines)
@@LAHover it’s too bad the nut wants to advance the timing when tightening the rotor, I’ve been jamming a wad of paper between the rotor and the stator when tightening to keep it in the most retarded position
I just purchased a phantom moto 85cc. So am I understanding right? That the 36 tooth is the sprocket to use for cruising and long distance? And did you find out yet if you need to move the clip on the needle up? Hopefully you are doing better. Thank you for the videos.
Hey there, would you mind explaining to me (new to these higher quality engine kits) what advantages and disadvantages each sprocket tooth count would offer? Things like top speed, power off the line, fuel consumption, and overall ride-ability?
Higher the tooth of rear sproket the more torque you get but lower top speed. Lower tooth gives you less torque and take off but helps when you get to the top end and gives you more speed for a given rpm.
Saw your video so thanks to you I am now the proud new owner of a phantom 85 n holy crap u we’re not joking about the power. I have a pk80 with so much aftermarket parts but this thing outta the box just blows the pk80 away
The transfer ports still help I have two engines one with stuff ports one with regular ports. The one with regular ports seem to drive better for some odd reason I’m still messing with it, but I need to know more.
What oil do you use for this engine? I can’t seem to find what’s mentioned in the instructions as “Valvoline Two Stroke Racing Oil,” is this the same as Valvoline multi purpose oil for two stroke engines? I also already have Lucus’s semi-synthetic 2-Cycle oil, is it safe to use?
getting this engine for my 29 inch hyper bmx bike!! ik this is random but if aliens threaten to destroy earth and asked whats something i could show them to change their mind, i would show them you're channel lol. I love ur vids mann hope youre doing amazing!
I would put the tensioner on backwards, then replace the tensioner wheel with one of those fatties with the two berrings, like the ones that come on the spring tensioners that bolt on to the 2-stroke engine cases, with a long 8mm bolt.
Yeah, what do you think of the "side ways fins" Mr Hover? Obviously the unitized Jug/head cannot be installed incorrectly, so why do you think the fins are perpendicular to normal air flow on a typical bicycle install? Thanks for the vid! Sorry you had a camera casualty. Peace.
What kind of bicycle is ideal for this kit? I have a 27 inch Trek beach cruiser that I am thinking about putting this motor on, is a Trek beach cruiser a good choice for this kit?
Hey man I’m planning on buying the phantom 85 as a new bike builder and in another video I think you exchanged the bushing for the piston and with the new phantom it has a bearing system instead of the brass bushing and I was wondering what would you prefer? Bearing or solid bushing?
Hey is your phantom 85 still running good ? I’m breaking mine in now it’s running good but it’s knocking and rattling sounds like in the top end. Thanks for the great vids 👍
I think you should put this on a budget fatbike to see if it'll still be able to pull like it does now. I also haven't seen any cool fatbike builds really so this wpuld be super cool
Who do you use to buy parts from and stuff I've been using bikeberry but they don't seem to be as good as I would like having problems with one of their engines tons of vibration doesn't seem right can't get no direct answers I need to find another supplier for stuff
I do have a question. Do you need to lube or grease anything. From like the piston or to the sprockets? Because I’m very interested into buying this engine for my bike aswell
First of all I appreciate your videos and all the effort. I would like to build a hill climber utilizing the yd100. Imagine a San Francisco Hill climb. Curious as to which rear sprocket size to use. Thanks
LA Hover Bikes, I wonder how it would run with a modified KX 65 or 85 expansion chamber and a pro circuit silencer? I think for a complete kit it isn't a bad deal for a step-up from stock China Doll, but some of the design cues have me perplexed and they are not very truthful with the language regarding what has been done to the internals of the case. Did you split the case to verify the larger crank bearings and seals? I mean for an engine around the 300 dollar mark it is an impressive kit and you can notice the performance advantage over a stock 66/80; however, I do not think they did near as much as they claim to have done and that worries me a bit. Like you mentioned several times there is no way to discern whether they truly provide an upgraded CDI or magneto. That being said, if they did beef up the lower end and with the cylinder and piston mods it is definitely something to build upon and comes in at a price far cheaper than a custom case reed engine. My only concern is if it would not be more advantageous to save and spend another 150 to 200 bucks and get a Smolik or Blakoon built engine that you know has had the bells and whistles treatment? Hope you recover from your spill quickly, and PLEASE keep us up to date on your findings because this package seems too good to be true for the money. Just saying.
I noticed when you were ride testing the motor that it was not running smoothly at cruising speeds. The reason for this could be the reed valve not properly working and I've heard of this before on many other engines. That sound when cruising means the reeds are too stiff and are not mixing the incoming air mixture properly. A less stiff set of reeds should, will, solve that problem with out effecting the strong acceleration or high end speeds.
I want to convert my fatbike to gas. Everyone seems to say I could get it to work with a jackshaft. I'm unsure about gas engine stuff. I can work on bicycles and have practically rebuilt mine over the years.

I just ordered one for myself xD what do you recommend for tips on installation? Should I grease anything up or is everything ready right out of the box?
11:50
I watched this video 5 times and didnt catch it till you timestamped it xD thank you so much
@@calebjohnson6596 bro tell me how it goes im thinking of copping one
When I tested it a few months ago I could instantly see the problem, which unfortunately you didn’t show or notice. The four stroke is caused by the mismatched transfer ports and stroke. There is not a single point in the cycle that the intake port is fully opened. Not a fan personally due to the four stroking. Wait until the OD-911 comes out….hint 54mm 😈. Good vids, bro.
Is there a way to correct this..??
Four seconds in ....sounds like a beast.
Do you know the hp of this motor? Great test and video I think this motor could work for a jet board , also 32:1 oil ratio seems a lot of oil could it not run 50:1 like an mx bike? Sorry if I seem dumb I have never owned a bicycle motor
i need to get one of these
The excessive 4 stroking is overly advanced timing, the woodruff key slots are super inconsistent on the cranks I’ve seen so the timings are all over the place. If you try removing the key and carefully retightening the rotor 5-10 degrees CCW of the original spot, I guarantee it’ll be fixed (I had to figure this out myself on some real rough running engines)
Thanks for the reminder. I remember doing this on my yd100 and if smoothed out a good bit.
@@LAHover it’s too bad the nut wants to advance the timing when tightening the rotor, I’ve been jamming a wad of paper between the rotor and the stator when tightening to keep it in the most retarded position
Hey thanks for the tip! Why did I not think of that...
@@LAHover no worries, loving the videos! Btw impact driver helps a lot too lol
I just purchased a phantom moto 85cc. So am I understanding right? That the 36 tooth is the sprocket to use for cruising and long distance? And did you find out yet if you need to move the clip on the needle up? Hopefully you are doing better. Thank you for the videos.
36 means more top end speed. A little less torque(for hills) and acceleration. With the larger bore piston that'll take care of your torque. All good.
Lower tooth gives you less torque and take off but helps when you get to the top end and gives you more speed for a given rpm.
definitely going to check out this motor....killer preview.bro
Thanks 👍
A beefier exaust would be great!
Saw your video so thanks to you I am now the proud new owner of a phantom 85 n holy crap u we’re not joking about the power. I have a pk80 with so much aftermarket parts but this thing outta the box just blows the pk80 away
Hope your safe in this storm homie
The transfer ports still help I have two engines one with stuff ports one with regular ports. The one with regular ports seem to drive better for some odd reason I’m still messing with it, but I need to know more.
I would be curious about how it would perform with a fmf fatty for a 2004 ish Kx 85 welded onto the stock flange...
Odd how the cooling fins are not aligned with the wind direction!
It’s a chainsaw cylinder all there air comes from the flywheel. It fine run good oil you will never have any issues
Peace.
Guys this cylinders weren't designed to be riding into the wind. They are saw cylinders
To Daniel Johnston, Ah ha, cyl head fins designed for fan cooling from chainsaws! That makes sense to me, thanks!
What kind of bicycle is ideal for this kit? I have a 27 inch Trek beach cruiser that I am thinking about putting this motor on, is a Trek beach cruiser a good choice for this kit?
I will give you a like and a comment for the wheelie fail alone.
With Amsoil dominator you can break in with 50to1 really good oil there's also amsoil Saber I've personally broken engines in with at 90to1
Hey man I’m planning on buying the phantom 85 as a new bike builder and in another video I think you exchanged the bushing for the piston and with the new phantom it has a bearing system instead of the brass bushing and I was wondering what would you prefer? Bearing or solid bushing?
I'm not sure how the newest ones are doing. Mine was a mess tho...
Definitely not recommended for your first build.
@@LAHover ok thanks for the insight bro!!
How are you recording yourself riding from a side angle?
360 camera on a selfie stick
Hey is your phantom 85 still running good ? I’m breaking mine in now it’s running good but it’s knocking and rattling sounds like in the top end.
Thanks for the great vids 👍
Did you find out what was knocking around? This engine doesn't have great reviews 😕
I think you should put this on a budget fatbike to see if it'll still be able to pull like it does now. I also haven't seen any cool fatbike builds really so this wpuld be super cool
Hold my beer.
This is not my bike, but it's very cool: ruclips.net/video/Dxgt5U_BYeY/видео.html
@@ChuckHaney yooooooo
Now that's an engine !!!
Price of this.. I got a different kinda bike though, one of them ones with the dirt bike accessories. Would it fit? End of day, price
Who do you use to buy parts from and stuff I've been using bikeberry but they don't seem to be as good as I would like having problems with one of their engines tons of vibration doesn't seem right can't get no direct answers I need to find another supplier for stuff
Would love to get it, but can't because I'm in the EU
Has a great sound!
I do have a question. Do you need to lube or grease anything. From like the piston or to the sprockets? Because I’m very interested into buying this engine for my bike aswell
yeeees
As far as looks, its like we are going back in time....
(Posted by Rick Pickell) Pretty sure if I build another bike. That I now have my next motor picked out.
if you turn the main plate on the chain tensioner it will tension towards the rear
Well now I have to buy one 😂
Great video as always!
Thanks for the info. I swapped the piston and got rid of the reeds. Runs about the same sadly.
I want to convert my fatbike to gas. Everyone seems to say I could get it to work with a jackshaft. I'm unsure about gas engine stuff. I can work on bicycles and have practically rebuilt mine over the years.
