My favorite RUclips show. I literally look forward to this, I finished my 30 plus year law enforcement career as Airport Police and this reminds me of being on the job. It was much nicer than other law enforcement as no one was shooting at me.
A lot is blatant. But I fly internationally and it's easy to forget snacks or (processed) items brought for gifts or taking back home. People just don't tend to think of processed items as something that has to be declared. As in, it doesn't occur to them. Just as you wouldn't think to declare a pair of shoes. It's not hard to get yourself in trouble.

Any time you cross a border into a foreign country, until you're safely out of the terminal and on your way, you're in a kind of legal purgatory, and authorities will use the laws as they see fit.

We are always stunned to see people with meat or fish or some other kind of meat in their suitcase. How on earth do they think it's even safe to put fish or meat in a bag without ice or refrigeration? It would have to spoil wouldn't it?

Every time I watch this channel I am angered by the disregard people have for the country in which they are visitors. Even those who live in Australia are often customs offenders. If customs ever checked my phone about all you would find is multiple videos and photos of my dogs and cats. Maybe a few of my family but mostly my English Mastiff and Great Pyrenees both are over 225 pounds and adorable and my two kittens who love to play with the Mastiffs tail.

You know it occurs to me, if customs and border were Really trying to protect Australia, Then EVERY TIME they caught people smuggling food, bugs, tobacco, etc they wouldn't "fine them", they would just take the items and either jail them, or send them back to where they came from (or both). IMHO fines should only be for citizens and only imposed by a judge (because then there would be more appropriate and ever increasing fines as well as possible jail time). Come on, the guy simply paid the duty on his undeclared cigarettes (that he tried to conceal)? People declaring them properly would have to pay duty on them too in order to keep them. Essentially he was not punished for his deliberate attempt to smuggle. That only encourages people to try to smuggle, since there is no consequence.

I'm wondering how they had the authority to examine his phone? I've never had my phone examined by customs when we've gone through a port of entry back into the United States. Obviously Austrailia is different and they don't have the same laws of protection that the United States do regarding searches.

The declaration form covers common Customs issues. The video on the phone doesn't fall into that category. So why are Customs personnel accessing his phone? Because, if you are applying for admission to a country (and that *is* what you are doing, legally speaking), regardless of whether or not you are a citizen of that country, everything and anything in your possession, including your electronic devices (like phones) and anything saved on them are on the table and may be inspected. Write that down. It's not just Australia.

For such an ecologically security-conscious country, AUS certainly has rather lax infraction penalties. Want these travelers to cease this behavior? Confiscate ALL undeclared items and slap a $1000 fine on top. Word will spread and things will change. Duh.

It wouldn't have to be the species of cockroach that's the problem, but rather the (unknown) bacteria, fungi, and parasites carried by the cockroach.

A fine for a video on his phone, really? I've never been asked if my phone contains violent videos. If it's not on the declaration card they shouldn't be allowed to fine people for it.
The declaration form covers common Customs issues. The video on the phone doesn't fall into that category.
So why are Customs personnel accessing his phone? Because, if you are applying for admission to a country (and that *is* what you are doing, legally speaking), regardless of whether or not you are a citizen of that country, everything and anything in your possession, including your electronic devices (like phones) and anything saved on them are on the table and may be inspected. Write that down. It's not just Australia.
