@@sherribatko8981you clearly have little understanding of how exotic diseases spread. That is not birdsnest for ‘personal consumption’; the amount is extensive. Just a small piece breaking off, or falling from a garbage bin, then blowing down the street is enough to begin a massive epidemic of bird flu; which is fatal not just to commercial poultry but to delicate (and critically endangered) wild birds that have no resistance to foreign disease strains. The collapse of a group of birds has significant knock on effects to whole ecosystems. Australian border biosecurity is critically important as many species here are significantly different to and have been protected from species from other parts of the world. I always think about that and they seem to not show that particular case in these videos.
I've read a comment once where a mom imported a mayan sculpture worth 5k and they drilled a hole and found nothing. They let her go with the statue. No compensation plus the item now only costs $500.
My guess is that they're not accountable for it which is messed up

“A hard decision whether to fine or prosecute…”. Prosecute!! These people knew what they were doing, it wasn’t a matter of ignorance, and it wasn’t a small amount. This should definitely be treated as a criminal activity.

People have a lot of nerve trying to sneak stuff into the country knowing very well, it is not permitted. The penalty is way too lenient for this. They should throw away all stuff that isn’t declared and raise the fines..

I don’t understand when the personnel states people are fidgety and that is suspect. On two occasions I have had my bags searched by customs agents. I had no reason to worry, nothing to feel guilty over but, I tell you, I was uptight & fidgety nonetheless.
