    I recommend for anyone that's thinking of getting a pet to make a simple excel spreadsheet. List out all potential costs that may happen, for example, cage, food, medical, toys, and etc. It's sometimes hard to grasp the cost unless it's actually laid out on you. Also keep in mind that you don't have to get it today, make sure everything is ready before getting the actual animal.

    Thankfully for making such educational videos, when I wanted a hamster a few years back I saved £37 to get "everything it needed" I searched videos on how to clean them as it had been a while since my last hamster and I had no clue what to do. I clicked on one of your videos and the next day I went and returned the bits I had already bought and saved a lot more. I'm so glad I did click your video, as I now no so much and since I have watched your channel, I have never had an unhappy hamster. 3 years later and I'm still learning more each day.

    I love to see more people around the world popping up with proper hamster care and actually doing research before getting a pet. 😃
    I unfortunately still see a lot of people with Critter Trials that think their hamster is ‘Just fine’ and ‘They love their cage!’ 😢 I really feel bad for all the hamsters that have to live through that. Your channel has helped so many people (myself included) learn proper hamster care, I constantly think to myself each week; “Oh! Victoria’s video is going up Saturday, I wonder what she will post..?”

    When I worked at petco I would always tell people to wait to buy an enclosure (a proper fish tank that’s at least 40 gallons) when the tanks went on sale since those are the most expensive immediate purchase. It usually had people genuinely consider their purchase as well as how much they wanted a hamster. Either that or they just went to another store where the employee didn’t care. I made sure those hamsters had an incredible home.

It’s usually behavior made out of boredom and can be potentially harmful if they fall from a high place or get stuck. Again, it’s your hamster and your money, but I would suggest investing in a tank that way they dont get hurt. Besides, the 6 inch wheels those things come with aren’t big enough for almost all hamster breeds. I also don’t love the tubes since hamsters can get stuck in them.

    I have close to $1,000 worth of hamster supplies picked out for a future ham😂
    And to the people that say that it’s “too expensive for something that only lives 2 years,” one, if your not willing to put in the money and time to care for one, don’t get one. And two, it’s also an investment. Most hides, chews, and of course the enclosure, can all be used for future hamsters! Your still gonna need to buy food and bedding and replace things here and there, but it’s gonna save a LOT of money in the long run

    • @VictoriaRaechel
      @VictoriaRaechel  5 месяцев назад +1

      Me and my boyfriend discussed this when I was editing this video! I personally always assume people will continue to own hamsters at least for a couple years so they'll likely get lots of use out of the items they've purchased!

  • @ShaneH42
    @ShaneH42 5 месяцев назад +3

    I think the cost of buying a hamster, especially from a pet shop, encourages people to think they’re inexpensive. In the UK they can be bought for about £15, about half than the cost of a reasonably good wheel

    • @VictoriaRaechel
      @VictoriaRaechel  5 месяцев назад +2

      Definitely! It's also why people have such poor attitudes about proper care with them, the amount of "well I'll just buy a new one if it dies- it's just a hamster" is so horrible.

    Thank you so much for all the guidance on proper hamster care! I wanted to get a hamster back in the beginning of October so i watched your videos and found out i needed a lot more money and a upgraded enclosure! (I had a hamster about 6 years ago and i was too young for understanding proper care so i had him in a very small tiny tales cage and i put him in a hamster ball..) so i saved ip lots of money tons of chores and stuff and when i went to buy everything , my dad wasn't having any of the big enclosure or lots of bedding things. So i eventually got two gerbils instead because they don't need as much space because they get territorial. My dad loves them as much as i do and i told him to watch some of your videos on hamster care since it is pretty similar to gerbil care, i just told him whats different with gerbils from hamsters and he understood and now he knows how to have a good habitat for gerbils/hamsters!

I did just want to mention one thing, and I promise I’m not trying to be rude or anything like that😅 but Gerbils do need the same amount of space and bedding as hamsters, if not more! They probably burrow even more than hamsters, so it really benefits them to have it deep😊

    Hi Victoria I am late but I just got a hamster on 26 December. If I didn’t come across your channel my new hamster frosty would be living in a tiny cage and not have bedding to burrow in. Frosty’s cage has 900 square inches of floor space and may be upgraded. Once again thank you for helping me with my hamster care 😁

    Great video! A lot of people don't know that just because hamsters are small doesn't mean they're cheap. An example of that is temu's hamster cages, they're awful. A lot of them are getting sold because they're cheap and the images make them look like these "luxury" cages when they're really not. 😥

    I've had hamsters in the past and plan to get one in 2024. I'm going to have to save up and buy things slowly but I'm going to do it. I'll be making your diy cage as well. I've loved your videos for years and am so happy I found you when I impulse bought my last two hamsters

    Hi Victoria!
    I got a 3 month old Syrian hamster for Christmas this year (family pet, but mainly for my ten year old). We have watched all of your videos and listened to your suggestions and researched a ton! We made a really awesome habitat that I am proud of (properly sized wheel, nine inches of bedding, lots of sprays, hideouts, and substrates, sand box, all the things!
    The hamster we picked out had been handled frequently, is super sweet, and according to the employee has never bit anyone, all good things!
    My concern is, we brought him home and let him explore his new surroundings. We didn’t try to pick him up (and the kids know to never corner him). We have been super respectful of his space and try to let him come to us. He has taken a few sunflower seeds out of my hand but beyond that he is still ridiculously scared of us. We have hardly seen him at all in the week that we have had him and I don’t think he’s even been to the other side of the enclosure. We have become rather discouraged. When he does come out (which is rare and only late at night) he hides with his back to us in the corner until we leave. He seems really sad and not very active. It’s hard feeling like you need to stay up until midnight in hopes you might see your hamster. Also, it has been impossible to get in there and figure out where to spot clean because he never comes out! Do you have any suggestions? It’s really hard to bond with a hamster that never comes out!

      Hello I am sorry about your hamster never coming out. I do have a few suggestions though for you. First some hamsters do take longer then others to get used to there new home so it might take a little longer then you expected. Second your hamster could be a ghost hamster ( she has an entire video about ghost hamsters) and for spot cleaning, you can spot clean when he is in the enclosure and if you want to get where he is sleeping then maybe try to get him out with a treat. Also nanny cams are a great way to see if your hamster is exploring his cage and also a great way to see when they last were active. I hope this helped:) happy new year!

    For those thinking that it is too much money, you cant be peaky when dealing with living beings, but for example. You can choose to give in hard work instead of money!!! For example, I made my own cage with the retails of an old desk (it was a really goood desk made with good wood) and buying only the acrilic, which made it so that a 150x50x50 cm cage with 4 5mm acrilic walls cost only 70 euros. Also, I made my own branches treating the wood and desinfecting it with 96% EtOH. I also made all my platforms with dollar carpboard and thick wood sticks (and nails, be careful hamsters cannot acces the nails). For a very long time I also made my own paper beding with toilet paper and a hand blender (it makes a lot of dust so filter the dust before putting it in the cage. With all this, I could start with no more than 150 euros and believe me when I say that you will get a super huge and nice set up. Up to know I made other things DIY (Victoria has always been a huge inspiration to a lot of the things I have made) and also bought a bunch of other things. With that said, give your pet the best you can offer!

    Hi Victoria! You probably won’t read this but you’ve guided me through my hamster care journey. I have a Russian dwarf hamster named Rosie whose birthday is in two days and a long haired Syrian named muffin who’s only 9 weeks. They both have ikea detolf cages and amazing care thanks to you! If I never found your channel on my reccomended one day if I had hamsters they would be in tiny pet store cages and what’s worse is the cages where I live average about 60 square inches which honestly is disgusting.

    I am in the UK and my start up costs were definitely around the £1000 mark.
    I added up my monthly costs too, for replenishing stocks of food, sand, toys, sprays, paper bedding, coco soil, beech chips, aspen, forage, and treats. I got to £55 per month!
    I strongly disagree with anyone who thinks hamsters are cheap pets!

    When I bought Phil Donahue the pet store only had reptile sand with calcium in it. The associate said that won't clump properly and the Hampter wouldn't like it. Also when shopping for a playpen I thought of getting a tent. That way I could sit inside with DukeM, my guy that passed recently. He didn't try to dig at the edges or corners. He loved it. The tent I bought at Walmart was thirty dollars. It is in my apartment. PhillpD will try it sometime soon.

    I definitely used reptile sand. And I must say, Hamtaro’s fur has been so much more softer, fluffier, and cleaner.

    We've had two hamsters now (trying hard to not get a new hamster, but they are so cute.....) and I have no idea how much I've spent. Except that it's a lot! Because buying new stuff (hideouts, tunnels, new wheel once a year, etc) for your hamster is just fun and good for the hamster. I have a large box of hamster-stuff now and two cages in our basement room. But when you want to do your best to give a small animal the best life, it's worth it 🥰
