He didn’t really miss out on Leaf. The chargers didn’t have the opportunity to draft Payton. But yeah they totally traded Drew Brees but Phillip rivers was a pretty good consolation price.

Unlike more recent tanks, I feel the Dolphins actually built some hope and trust in Flores’ regime in both players, fans, and management, which was desperately needed after the start they had. Also they still got Tua, who, make no mistake, is far from a bust.
Idk Tua was bound to be the first pick overall but his injury and Joe Burrow happened. I think they got what they deserved.
The Dolphins would be under the category of failed tanks that worked out because the idiot Giants took Andrew (HAHAHA) Thomas at #4 to protect franchise quarterback (HAHAHAHA) Daniel Jones (literally pissing myself laughing at the Giants draft failures).
They also thought Testaverde might be color blind and he was tested for it. He was also admired by Parcells. He was a pretty solid quarterback compared to they way he is remembered.

1986 was actually a worse Testaverde Tank Job by the Colts than the Packers. The Colts started 0-13, fired Frank Kush, won game #14 improbably on a blocked punt, then won out to go 3-13. They lost out on Vinny, and drafted Cornelius Bennett in the first round... who pulled an Elway and swore he'd never play with the Colts (though he did late in his career after Manning arrived lol)... leading directly to the Eric Dickerson trade in 87. The Colts did get a QB in that draft...Jack Trudeau... and the Colts did make the playoffs the next year...but mainly because the replacement players during the strike were better than the regular Colts

One of my favorite NFL stats: under the current scheduling system, it is mathematically possible for a team to go 16-0 and still have to play in the Wild Card round. It is also mathematically possible for a team to go 0-16 and only get the #4 overall pick in the draft.
@Travis Reyna Except the NFL doesn't have a draft lottery. The reason is that, because of how NFL scheduling works, up to four teams can theoretically win or lose every single game in a given year.
So for example, say the Bears went 0-16 this year. They only played the NFC North and South, the AFC South, the Giants, and the Rams. (Remember that every team who played against an 0-16 team gets a win and therefore cannot be 0-16 themselves.)
Therefore one of the other NFC West or East teams could have also gone 0-16, let's say the 49ers. They played the NFC West and East, the AFC East, the Packers and the Saints.
So one team from the AFC North or West could also go 0-16, say the Bengals. They played the AFC North and South, the NFC East, the Chargers, and the Dolphins.
Three teams are left that didn't play any of our 0-16 teams and thus could also go 0-16 themselves: the Broncos, the Chiefs, and the Raiders.
In this scenario, 4 teams went 0-16, so one of them is going to pick 4th in the draft. The same logic works in reverse, too: 4 teams could mathematically go 16-0, and two of them would have to play in the wild card round.
The year that really sticks out as a Lions fan is 2001. Detroit started the season a perfect 0-12 despite coming within one score 9 straight games. The expansion Houston Texans were guaranteed the first pick in the 2002 Draft but the Lions were clearly on track to get the second choice. However they suddenly won 2 of the last 4 games and the Carolina Panthers somehow lost 15 straight after an opening week victory. Carolina ultimately used the second overall pick to take Julius Peppers, who had a long career including 9 Pro Bowls and 159.5 sacks. Detroit settled for Joey Harrington, who had a forgettable 7 year NFL career that included more interceptions than touchdowns and a 69.4 passer rating.
Now do the same for the MLB. The Mariners missed out on drafting Strasburg in 2009 because one of their players decided to have a sudden hot streak in the last 6 games.

To me, the value of a tank depends on the consensus surrounding the #1 pick. This is why the Jets' blown tank is the worst of all-time: Trevor Lawrence is the surest thing since Andrew Luck. Vinny Testerverde? Not so much (everyone who saw the Fiesta Bowl vs. Penn State could tell he had serious problems with decision-making).

Here's some stats you didn't need to know. Vinny Testaverde in games against the Packers threw 3,299 passing yards, and that's the most against any team he faced in his 20+ year career. In case you were wondering he had 8 wins (Vinny's most against any team) 7 losses, and 15 TDs/17 INTs against Green Bay.

My personal favorite failed tank is in baseball. I don’t know if it had any significant impact on losing out on a once in a lifetime player or anything but here’s the scenario. San Francisco Giants were set to get the first overall pick, last game of the season all they needed to do was lose to secure the first overall pick and they were doing okay as they headed into the bottom of the ninth tied 4-4 then Pablo Sandoval hit a walk off homerun to win the game and lose the first overall pick.
I work as a pizza delivery driver in Trevor Lawrence's hometown. For that last couple of years, about 3/4 of the houses with something out front for the local high school (yard flags, full flags, signs, etc) also have something for Clemson. I'll be interested to see if that translates to his nfl career.
