  • Zipped pocket, elasticated pocket and a zipped panel, this tote bag is so useful for work, baby, the gym or a weekend away! It's quite a long video but there are lots of sewing techniques for you to enjoy!
And congratulations to Ruth Bilbo Coates from Atlanta for winning the bag!

WHY ARE THERE 258 DISLIKES ??? Debbie's videos are ALL FREE and this Lady gives us opportunities to learn at our own speed and rhyme. And mostly to ENJOY. Please dont be discouraged Debbie. I've been a big fan of you on CC and here on RUclips . Thanks Debbie for taking the time to make these videos and post it on RUclips. It's fun watching you and your furries. Thanks for making me smile. My daughter in law wanted a "largish" tote bag to carry her music sheets as well as my son's. They play in an orchestra and the books and music sheets they carry are worse than kids going to school. As each instrument has its music sheet they definitely need a big tote bag. Both play 3 different instruments each. Thanks Debbie for this video. My daughter in law found HER TOTE BAG. We watched your video together. She will have it on Friday. Thanks for sharing, caring and giving us the opportunity to LEARN and make eye catching sensational tote bags and backpacks. You are truly a blessing. THANKYOU 👍👍👍😘🍾🍾🍾

I just found this video while traipsing through the myre of bag videos. Honestly, I've learned more shortcuts in the 20 minutes I've been watching this video than I've learned in the last 6 months. Every other pattern I've found is so ... fiddly ... with the elastic pockets as well as the zippers. Debbie couldn't have made it easier. As a novice, I really appreciate her tutorial and, like you, I can't imagine why anyone would give this a "thumbs down".

I'm a reasonable sewer - not great, not terrible - but the bag I made from this is absolutely perfect (that never happens to me) and I could not be more proud. All I did was follow step by step and the bag makes me look like I am a trained professional. My mother turns 80 tomorrow, is a committed traveller and I know she will go nuts for it (I made it in beautiful denim-weight vintage map of the world fabric, lined with unbleached canvas). Now to make her a little matching cosmetics bag to put inside...thank you SO MUCH Debbie and I will be sure to like and share wherever I can, and tell my followers how amazing you are XX

I made my daughter this bag during lockdown, when he was born in April 2020. I loved it and made myself one. My grandson is now at nursery and I love the elasticated pockets on the side, which I use to carry hiswater bottle. I am going to make myself another one before he starts school in September. Thank you Debbie Shore for your sharing your brilliant tutorial! @debbieshore

I think it's brilliant that, while sewing the zip, you realized it wasn't right and didn't edit out the redeaux. Everyone makes mistakes, or doesn't like something, and it has to be done over. Most videos don't show that, but you did! THANK YOU for being real. It helps a lot for those of us who are perfectionists and don't get it right the first time when the video is "perfect". Yes, I know there's editing, but when you watch a video and it's perfect, especially from someone who sews a lot, it causes us perfectionists to pucker a little. I've gotten over it because I've had to take out feet of stitching on projects, but knowing that a pro is willing and comfortable adjusting what they just did is not only refreshing, but real, and really, really helpful. You are now one of my fav YT contributors.

My wife and I are new to sewing with our focus on using/combining waxed canvas and/or leather with very colorful lining material purchased from our local quilting shop. This video is hands down the best step by step we have found and provides the how-to do many skills (multiple zipper configurations, stretch pockets) which can then be applied to any bag/purse we are making. We design, build and maintain large estate gardens for three very successful families and we approach that work much the same way you do sewing. We explain the what and how to our clients and then it makse it so they can understand what we are doing. At 65 we are always looking to extend our skills and sewing is a great winter endeavor for us. Once again thank you for a great video!!

4/20/23: Hi Debbie, it’s been a little over a year since I made my first bag which I indicated I would keep for myself, but I wound up giving it to my sister who loved it so much. Anyway, I thought it was time to make another and, in doing so, I found an easier way to do the lining and outside bag with respect to the base panel which can be time consuming (at least for me) trying to get it lined up correctly with starting at the ¼” mark before the corners as you demonstrated. What I did was to sew on the base panel first to the two outside panels. I then attached the sides, and it thereby leaves only the base panel to attach to the bottom sides straight across instead of having to go around each corner matching it up to (hopefully) get it right. (I had issues with it.) It would make it a lot easier, in my opinion, especially for beginners (and me!) doing it this way. Nevertheless, I hope you can visualize it, because it’s more simplified, and it works great! And now that I’ve got the zip panel down pat (remember I had problems with that last go round?), and now this new way of assembling the bag with the base panel, I could make a few more of these without intimidation. This one I made I got jazzy with it and added some hardware to it, so it looks really cool. Thanks again, Debbie, for introducing this project. I LOVE it! 😊

I tried making this bag last year and had a hard time with the bottom. It didn't come out quite right, a bit wonky, but it was for me. However, I attempted to do it your way on yesterday and I had no problem whatsoever, was easy as pie to do and it came out great! Thanks for the tip. It really helped. I am surprised that the creator didn't acknowledge your message cause it's a good one and we can all learn from each other for easier ways to do things. It is a nice bag.

I have sewn two of the 60's aprons and given one as BD gift, the reversible purse - in a gorgeous fabric- the wallet, two simple lined cosmetic bags, and now this tote; which is also a gift for a good friend. I can follow your videos so well! Your voice soothes me which adds to the enjoyment. I just made this bag and I'm LOVING it! So easy to follow most of your directions, although sewing on the bottom panels was a little difficult as a beginner. I figured it out in the end. Thanks for the tip in overlapping the seams by 1/4 inch. Fit perfectly. Didn't do the elastic pockets because I don't need them. Thanks to you, I can add them to other bags later if I wish. You know, if you add a pocket or two, like an "invisible" pocket to the back and a couple of zipper pockets in the lining, it would make a great weekender! Of course, you could use it as that now, but I like zips and pockets to keep things organized.
I very highly recommend that folks try to make this one! Thanks so much for posting!

Cindy McFarland I totally agree with you. I had a FB about a year ago and I wasn't on there very long!!! It was horrible, people cursing each other and the drama, WOW! I do wish that they would consider people that chooses not to be on there and give us a chance in winning stuff.

I love Facebook and have several private or secret pages with sewing sisters and brothers. No cursing. Just encouragement. Perhaps Cindy and Nancy didn't know about turning off notifications from folks you find objectionable. They won't know and it relieves you of hearing their rants. Enjoy your new tote bags!! Debbie is such a great teacher.

I have lost count of the number of these bags I've made. I love making them as gifts. The last two I made for my granddaughter as she wanted them for her gifts to her best friends. I made them larger. With a little math, they are perfect. I made them 18x15. Apparently the last one was a little too small for 14 yr old girls who fill them with clothes. Thank you for your excellent instruction.
I'd recommend this video to anyone starting to sew. It gave me so much more confidence to try different projects.
    Keep them coming Debbie!

Thank-you Debbie! I just made this after seeing this video last week. On the outside I added a two compartment pocket on the blank side and a zipper pocket on the interior with a three compartment pocket on the opposite side. Thank-you for the great instructions.

Made this bag and it turned out great. I used heavier weight upholstery fabric for outside and lining and did not need to use interfacing and it is sturdy enough to carry books and things like that. Very pleased with it! Thanks for the video!
