I appreciate that this is a lesson on UNDERSTANDING trees, because so many drawing tutorials will just be like "copy how I draw a tree" but you don't necessarily learn from those. this is so very helpful

I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your videos on drawing, the first few especially ("How to draw #1" etc.). I'm 36 years old, I haven't dared trying to sketch and draw since I was a child. I've always had a tortured relationship with artistic expression of any kind, and your spot on, slow, and gentle approach has helped me take courage. Thank you for that.

    Arborist here.
Something to consider: trees grow according to their environment. They grow taller or lengthen their branches in protected areas, such as when they're surrounded by buildings or other trees where wind or snow loads don't threaten to break their limbs. In unprotected areas, it's the opposite. You can read something about wind patterns that way because sometimes a tree will only have longer limbs on one side while the other side will be short and stubby, or else the entire tree will be very stout with thick connections between the trunk and limbs because they get battered by the weather and wind.
Something else: the crotches of the branch unions aren't always V shaped. Often they'll have more of a curve. Most have a branch collar, so they'll have a donut shape where the limb grows from the parent stem. Most every single tree has some deadwood which typically curls up on the ends. The longer the tree has been dead, the more bark will slough off. The limbs will become brittle. The sun can, but does not always, bleach the heartwood once the bark falls away, so it's possible to have a dead tree that is white or off-white. Trees in a stand will attempt to grow away from one another to get maximum light. In a tight forest, trees might grow straight, thin and tall, but may not send out as many lateral limbs lower in the canopy because light simply doesn't reach the forest floor in great enough amounts.
If you glance through a tree nursery's catalogue (J. Frank Schmidt for example), sometimes they'll feature a silhouette to indicate the tree's growth habit at maturity. If there's anyone on this planet that can appreciate the shapes of trees, it's an artist. There's so much variety, it seems almost endless.
Just some facts to inform your art. I hope it helps someone.
    Thanks for the lesson!

Lol, I can't believe I've always made the "fan" mistake! Yes, trees are 3 dimensional so branches don't just go up or sideways. And that's why I love your videos. You point out "obvious" things that beginners can totally miss. Thanks again for the help.

Thank you so much! I was just sitting in my room and had the idea to start learning how to draw. I propably didnt draw something in since my childhood . I just watched your video and i was so fascinated how you just put the pencil on the paper and made such an amazing tree. I really was in the flow with the pencil and the paper. It was the first time I decided to just draw a tree for myself without anyone wanting me to do it. I always thought i was horrible at drawing. I did draw for over an hour and i am so amazed by the results of my first tree. I will keep learning how to draw as ahobby for myself. A big thank you. This video were my inspiration to finally start learning to draw. I will keep this hobby up hopefully for my lifetime. Thanks to you

( I have been sketching for a little longer than a year now ). Just.... Respect. I always had trouble doing this and it is absolutely amazing that an adult can explain a thirteen year old girl ( THAT ISN"T EVEN ENGLISH ) how to draw a tree. I am definitely checking out your account and im definitely great full for this video. I really hope to become an animator or an (manga) artist in the future. Very nice video. I can tell you respect trees. I love trees. The first one you drew I thought that tree has personality. And then you mention that they all have individual personalities. It's good to hear from others who appreciate trees, there is 3 dimensional aspect to drawing them. Now that it's winter here, I can take advantage that they have leaves on and see them up and close and really see their branches. Thank you for a pleasantly informative video about drawing trees. I'm going to be more aware of their shapes as I hug them!

There was useful information in here I won't deny that, but it felt a little redundant after the first 3 or 4 minutes, and you really down played the real problem with drawing trees, leaves , if I avoid evergreens I can draw all the trees I want in the fall and winter, I can observe bare branches and make sense of them, leaves are the amorphous mass that people struggle with.

      1) how to sketch two objects with a proportion,
when each one r in different point perspectives, like one forward and one backward but different points in horizon.
i cant guess the size of the object with the distance between.
      2) i am able to sketch something pretty acceptable from real life, ( if i draw from seeing that ),
but if i draw something similar to that on my own ( imagining ), i am not able to like get it look as good.
      its some what off,
like the picture in the mind is really good, but when i draw that, i feel its ok but in the end it looks bad.
something like proportion or lighting r wayy off making the picture totally different from what im thinking.

I'm very new to drawing and my big concern is how to draw the clumps of leaves. I seem to have trouble making it look more 3d. Is it too advanced to draw this and I should start with more basic and simple things to draw
