I was just thinking the same! Great teacher. I just started drawing with pencil (and I'm in my mid-50s!). I would love to start trying pen and ink now.
Right off the bat, I noticed when he asked for a review he said “whether it’s something good or if it’s something constructive” Rather than saying good or bad. I love the mindset.
Just found your channel. You have an amazing ability to put what you're thinking and seeing into words. I learned more from this than any art lesson I've ever had. Thank you!
Now that the new year celebrations are over I have made my resolutions and the first one on my list is art related. I have decided to improve on my drawing skills including your wonderful pen and ink series. I have gone out and bought a selection of sketchbooks (usually I do my sketches on scrappy bits of computer paper lying around the house) and I have invested in some new ink pens and other equipment. I'm planning to have a separate sketchbook for each subject you teach. I hope I have the willpower to follow my new resolution into 2018 as I am sure this plan is going to improve my artistic skills in leaps and bounds. Do you have your new book available on Kindle yet? Thank you for being so generous with your amazing knowledge and for explaining everything so meticulously and unselfishly with your calm clear voice. You are truly an amazing inspiration to all artists on this planet! Happy New Year to you.
Just rewatched and jeez, this was helpful!! Originally watched this a couple years ago and it was helpful but my drawing skills were..rudimentary at best! But now I could follow along and my drawings actually looked like his!! Such a wonderful teacher, easy to understand and follow along with, Alphonso, you've earned the title of "Best Pen & Ink Teacher on RUclips"!!! Thank you for getting me over a hump in my drawing!! Thank you!!
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever ever ever seen. I swear I’ve been watching tree tutorials for my art assignment for at least three hours cuz I wanna draw it nicely. And this tutorial taught me so well I got the hang of it right away
This is absolutely the best video on how to draw trees I have ever seen! I have been a high school art teacher for over 30 years and found this so helpful!
During quarantine, I've been watching a LOT of drawing tutorials on RUclips and yours are by far the most informative and instructive. You have inspired me! Thank you so much! I just ordered your workbook.
I’m not a visual artist by any means but I’ve gotten into doodling lately and I can’t believe the tree I just drew after watching this video. I’m in awe. I can draw a good tree now. From my own brain. Without a reference. Thank you
Wow! You've got a great way of explaining shadows with regards to trees. Nobody else ever explains it properly (or at all) in other tutorials - it's something I've been struggling with. Now I can finally make progress in my drawing and painting of trees.Thank-you!
Thank you for your channel! I've never had an art lesson in my life... but I always "wished" I could draw. Your demonstrations and commentary are so clear and helpful! Now that I'm retired, I have stopped 'wishing', and started practicing! Thanks for the thought, time and effort you put into your free content!!!
This was one of your first videos I watched when I started learning to draw 9 months ago. It was interesting then, but the unity and variety went right over my head, and I didn't quite grasp the jellyfish form you were explaining. Now I've been returning to trying to draw plant life recently, with a little success but things just out of my reach. Watching this video again, and doing a drawing while I watch it, it's really clicked in my mind and helped me. I understand and can apply what you're saying. Thank you again for all your awesome videos.
Just a wonderful teacher and I’m so grateful that he makes these videos. I’ve already watched a few of them and like the other gentleman I’m now even more excited to get back to my first love drawing.
Another extraordinary revelation. I was looking at trees so differently today, with such joy and a deeper awareness than ever before. I bought your book and workbook and I am methodically working through. It is wonderful to be back in school again with a compassionate and highly competent teacher. I cannot thank you enough!🙏
This video put a massive smile on my face. I’ve been learning from your books as I’m a manga artist (or gradually working on being able to really call myself that) and it’s been invaluable. I have a scene with my main character soon where I need her to be isolated by a tree and I wanted to see how you do it not just read it and I was blown away. I just love your books, and I love your spirit, be playful, have fun, don’t stress just feel blessed that we have paper and ink and whatever other supplies we love to hand.
This is the first time I’ve come across your drawing technique and what can I say, wow wow wow? Thank you so much for doing this you are an inspiration and You’ve made things so much clearer from the basic tree I just drew from a book/drawing course. I’m going to be practising.
Love his teaching style, calm why/how and not a lot of unrelated chatter. His love of art comes through without all the “fluff” many others incorporate.
You're truly an amazing teacher. With most tutorials, even at the end you think "Wow they make it look so easy but i still suck" but you're tutorials are so clear. You really understand and are able to express how and why you think of things a certain way. I've learned so much in just a couple of videos and I really feel like I've enjoyed this experience of transitioning from just being able to draw stick-figure-like flat drawings to complex drawings that look life like. Thank you so much for taking your time and expertise and deciding to share it with the world! We truly value it!!
its such a relief to find a channel like yours where focus is not on drawing a fantasy; but what, why n how to draw n most important why to draw?? , otherwise everything i want to draw is outside. Congrats for having such great channel !!
I want to give this more than one thumbs up! I watched it multiple times. First time to try the scribbles, then to learn the shading of the trunk. Casual, playful, the strokes just look so good.
Thank you Alphonso, your videos are so helpful, playful and you make pen and ink drawing fun and easy to learn. I just draw my first ever tree from step 1 till the end.
Hi Alphonso. Just wanted to say that I happened upon your videos while searching for ink drawing techniques to further my own skillset...and I struck gold. Thank you for posting your professional and helpful tutorials; they are inspiring, insightful, and jam packed with so many great tips and techniques! In this digital age, you've reminded me of how rewarding pen on paper can STILL be! Now...back to drawing practice... :0)
Thank you Alphonso. I love your teaching style. I have always had trouble with drawing trees because I get bogged down in the underlying structure of the branches and detail of the leaves. Your advice to be playful and yet mindful of consistency is very helpful. Right as I am drawing along with this video, I am starting to get it.
Thank you so much Mr. Dunn. I just started drawing a few weeks ago. I am 55 and I have no knowledge of drawing but already looked at some youtube videos to learn a few things. Today was the first time I saw one of your videos because it popped up after I had seen another one from another channel, on how to draw trees. I am following your tutorial and my trees are looking a little bit more real instead of just a flat shaped tree, like I used to do in elementary school. Thank you so much. I also appreciate the way you teach. You explain things very well. I am so excited to do more trees with your tutorial. Thank you.
Thank-you Alphonso!!!!!!!!! Learning to loosen up my hand and mind drawing and you are assisting me in this process with your very friendly and respectful of ones' freedom style.
After a long break, I am back to watching your videos, Alphonso. I realize what a wonderful teacher you are after watching a lot of other ones on YT! Don't get me wrong, there are lots of good instructors out there, but you are on my short list. Wonderfully done. Ok, gotto stop watching videos and get down to work!!
Thank you very much for this video! I struggle with ink and have trouble using it differently from the way I use graphite, so watching the way you shade has been helpful. I'm excited to go home later and draw some plants!

Hello Alphonso, It's Alicia the draftsman. I finally found what I'm really interested in, "trees". I like the description you give for the branches, "The line of balance". My favorite trees are winter trees. I can draft with tools but I can't draw free hand. Alphonso you’re the most amazing teacher. Thankyou so very much. I am truly loving your videos and I will get your book. You have taught me so much already.

You are the RUclips teacher I have needed for a long time. Thank you so much for your videos! You teach in a way I can understand and I am so excited to get drawing this weekend!
Wow. I'm just watching it and my mind is getting blown of how simple drawing a tree can be. Much thanks Alphonso! You're awesome. I used to hate drawing trees, now you have changed my mind forever.
seriously, your tutorials are fantastic!!! i have been binge watching them over last couple of days and they have helped me improve my drawing so much, even in just a small amount of time. thank u so much for all of the hard work.
Alphonso, You are a natural at this. Not just the drawings, but the flow of the lessons too. I actually have a background in broadcast journalism. Do you too, or do you have someone that edits them for you? No, I'm not looking for a job. I was just going to say, (If you don't already do it), watch your videos over and over always taking notes on what would make the tutorial better. When I worked in radio the station manager use to make me listen to recordings of my show. That way I could hear the mistakes I was making, (trust me, you have to have a very thick skin if you're going to be in the spotlight), and I could work on my weaknesses. I'm saying anything bad about your channel. It ROCKS! Just given some advice. Good luck with all you're doing, Bill
I love this guy! I’ve learned so much from this one man. He really gets into shading and shadows easier for me to understand. I love the way he explaines stroke, shapes and forms as well!! Thanks dude!! You’re the best!
Have been watching these tutorials and have found them really helpful, went and bought the book. Looking forward to reading it and practicing these ideas and techniques. Thank you for your time and help.
I love trees, and have wanted to draw them for so long. I never had the chance to learn the basics. You have made a dream come true for me. I will order your book immediately. You have made it all come to life so beautifully. I also really appreciated your technique in explaining the finer points. It was so awesome watching your trees come to life. Thank you so much.. I am looking forward to more of your tutorials. Please keep them coming.
I don't know what kind of a magic you hold that I am able to draw things easily the moment I start watching your videos. As an archi student, this was very helpful. Thank you for taking your time to teach us well.😊
To do a work and to teach the same work requires different skill sets. The explanations are perfect and beautifully explained. I have been looking for this topic for almost 2 years, and now I have finally got this tutorial. Excellent tutorial, beautifully explained, and lovely output. Great artist and teacher. Thank you very much...🙏🙏🙏
Dear Alphonso, one more time a very useful tutorial. . You're a great teacher and you manage to make clear difficult things with simple words It reminds me the sentence of a former french writer (17th century) who said :" Ce qui se conçoit bien s'énonce clairement" That means that when your thoughts are clear, your words also. I've bought your book for Christmas. It's a must have one. Thank you so much !
This man is an excellent teacher .One of the best on you tube . He has renewed my interest in drawing and I am an old geezer.

You have made it all come to life so beautifully. I also really appreciated your technique in explaining the finer points. It was so awesome watching your trees come to life. Thank you so much.. I am looking forward to more of your tutorials. Please keep them coming.
Thanks much
I don't know what kind of a magic you hold that I am able to draw things easily the moment I start watching your videos. As an archi student, this was very helpful. Thank you for taking your time to teach us well.😊
That last tree was awesome.
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you very much and thank so much for supporting my book :-)
