  • Iconic drum beat played by Clyde Stubblefield on James Brown’s classic “Funky Drummer”.
    This is one I get asked about all the time in my lessons here, and it featured in the 2012-2018 syllabus of Trinity Rock and Pop Grade 6 drums.
    The groove changes as the song progresses, but this version is what I’d consider the most iconic version - it’s played in the lead-up to the drum break and in the drum break itself at 5:21 on the original.
    Have fun and please let me know if any questions :)

    I started learning this beat about 10 years ago with Jeff Randall's video, gave up, tried again, gave up. Years passed and I found this. So much malpractice is slowly being phased out and I think you've got me fixed up. Thank you so much.

    This song was one of the main things that compelled me to finally take up drums after wanting to my entire life. Earlier on I just couldn’t get it, but I guess i’ve advanced enough that now that I have stumbled upon your video, I could start to play this fairly quickly. Thank you!

    I play this on the ride cymbal like the Amen Break, for it's much easier for me.

      @@MikeBarnesDrums lol, I remember the feeling. There are so many versions of this groove, all taught slightly differently. You did an excellent job. Starting slow is always the most important pt of any lesson. Getting that sound has been tough. I'm just entering the world of DAW. I'm also trying to re-teach myself how to play after some health bs.

    I’ve watched numerous tutorials on this beat, and this is by far the best! I’ve almost got it, but for whatever reason I lose the beat whenever I try to add the open high hat. My brain just isn’t playing ball on this part. Any tips?

      Nice one Mike, yes - work on building your general open/close hi-hat and kick/snare coordination up over time, as well as focusing purely on this groove. A real combination of skill sets at work here IMO. Cheers!

    I can play this already even though I am in Grade 4

    Clyde playing it: ruclips.net/video/_55a_Sje0lY/видео.html At this point, I'm almost certain that the 16ths you can hear on the recording are overdubbed or someone else playing at the same time (listen close... There's some hi-hat bits where the hat is open but the hat playing the 16ths is closed...)

    • @poserp
      @poserp 5 лет назад +1

      I tried to do the 16ths thing on and off for years (I made the mistake of thinking he did the 16ths too), and it never came out right. Try it the way he does it here, and things kinda magically fall into place.

    • @poserp
      @poserp 5 лет назад +1

      ...One final comment, one cool thing is the way his snare pattern against the hi-hat makes it _seem_ like he's playing 16ths the whole time.

      @poserp 5 лет назад +1

      (no really, last comment...) One other neat thing about this video -- the "effect" of hearing the syncopation between the snare and hi-hat is mostly lost with the close mics, but is very audible with the room mics. Reason numero uno in my book to avoid close mics when doing funk drums. My opinion, of course.
