Focusing on what different limbs are doing, is a very good way of learning these funk beats
As a band director who is a trumpet player, this is SUPER helpful. Can't wait to show my students this.. NUANCE!
Very cool! Please show them! 🙏🏼
In over a quarter century of interviewing or otherwise hanging out with musicians, you definitely fall into the "you'll never remember me I'll never forget you" category. Much love from Drum! and Drummer magazines. All love.
Don, I do remember you! Thanks for the interviews over the years. I appreciate the coverage! 🙏🏼 SM
Another great lesson from Stanton!
THANK YOU, STANTON! A great presentation on the foundations of funk!
I'm all over this! These guys inspired me more than I realized. To the kit!

Love it. I've picked up funky grooves from my youth in the sixties and didn't even know it. Now, with these lessons, I can perfect them and relive the love!

Cool. Always did love that Tower of Power Garibaldi-ization.
Met u in Cleveland at a drum clinic many years ago and bought your "Take it to the Street" book that u signed. I was soo impressed by that Nawlens swinging feel you showed us that I followed you to your gig downtown. Great stuff! Hope you visit Cleveland again! Keep those funktasty nasty beats coming!!! Great vid!

Thank you. 🙏🏼
I only recently discovered this channel. One of my favourite drummers!
I jam along with Stanton during demos...😊

Oh and I play bass btw. So your lines without accompaniment are fantastic to loop and groove along with. Thanks!
That’s snare sounds tasty nice grooving Stanton 💯🎼🥁😆✌️
Very good lesson. I played drums with Leslie West Vagrants in the sixties. All James Browns drummers were a huge influence on me. I always say Soul music if Funky. Reggae music is Kinky
Evangelist Roger Mansour
🙌🏼🥁👊🏼
Stanton is a modern legend
I think the black drummers he is imitating are the real legends 😁✌🏽
I’ve heard the name before, but never really studied Stanton Moore.
Damn this guy is good!
Thanks Jim! 🙏🏼
Yay! Tho cold sweat kicks harder with single kicks only (IMO)
Great video and WHAT A HI HAT SOUND!!!! wich one is it? it looks bigger than te typical 14'' isn´t it.?
Thanks for this content
Jabo 4 President !!
Thank you! Speaking of dynamics, are rim shots essential to playing funky music?
@Rioken Vjai, for me it depends on the volume level. If I'm playing funk with my piano trio, or in a low volume situation, I usually hit lighter and don't play rim shots. In my opinion, you can definitely be funky with out playing rim shots.
❤
So that’s* what these are called. I’ve jammed with them a bit not knowing what it was, just sounded familiar
Wait a minute Stanton. Where does the "boom-boom-shacka-goom" land in the measure, lol? Love this lesson!
sounds like some james brown. a very good video, thanks.
🙌🏼
Stanton, when did you switch away from Crescent/Sabian and over to Zildjian’s?
@Seger Marion in Jan 2020.
اپنے چینل پر اپنا ہی انٹرویو۔ واہ بھئ واہ
Ok that’s where they come from
🙌🏼🥁👊🏼
When I listen to Cold Sweat, it sounds like the high hat is open on 1 and closing on the and of 1. Or maybe like he is keeping it open on both the 1 and the and, and then closing it on 2. Am I mishearing it?
@chuangtsu, the hi-hat opens on the and of 1 and then closes on beat 2. I hope that helps!
Great lesson sir! Also, is that a Snareweight M1 on your snare?
It is! I really dig it!
Me to ! I have all of the Snareweight products myself. I became great friends with the owner/creator Snareweight, i need to put you in contact with him. ✌🏾🥁
May 21st? Wait a minute, that's my birthday 🎈🎂💕😘🥳🤩🎉! 3 more months until is my birthday 🎈🎂💕😘🥳🤩🎉
There are millions of people with birthday on 21st May, relax.
12:33 😆
And every Deitch groove. Most notably Nyack, and the last suppit.
Jabo's thing is more of a bones/tap dancing pattern on the hi-hat, with fewer notes on the snare as the snare and hi-hat are trading notes (almost in a linear fashion), it's what keeps things from sounding too "busy" which is what happens with too many notes on the snare. Ex: ruclips.net/video/oEkbr7PiM8k/видео.html
...Adding, where most people put an extra ghost note(s) in the second half of the measure (leading from 3 into 4), Jabo plays alternating notes on the snare and hi-hat. It's a 4-note pattern, and on the last note he hits the hi-hat and the kick at the same time. This gives the illusion of a snare note without the extra weight in the mid-range..
1:31 / 3:29 /
He kinda looks like Stephen Colbert in the thumbnail.
got Gretsch?
🙌🏼
lmao at "smaller notes quiiieeeter"
Kick drum be like.....😏
Don't know why but I find it awkward playing the snare accents at the same time as the hihat/ride subdivisions
Talk
How about Funky Drummer though? ;)
Funky Drummer is in the full course here www.stantonmooredrumacademy.com/offers/omB2PFp8/checkout
This video is just part of the course. 👍🏼
Stanton is starting to look like Stephen Colbert
I didn't know Stephen Colbert plays drums so well
Follow your indication...i slow down the video, u sound drunk XD...great tutorial by the way , thanks!!!
I'm just watching this because I thought it was Stephen Colbert in the thumbnail
Stant dog
The beat at the end..was not the worst beat ever it's drum n bass 😅
Black drummers are the best at playing black American music 😄✌🏽
Adam Deitch
Allow me to fill in what you might of forgotten. Black drummers also do an excellent job playing Hard Rock, Metal, Reggae dance hall, traditional Reggae, Gospel, R&B, Blues, popular, Rap, House, Jazz and Swing.
I have been to several drum clinics. I have seen some amazing talent from Kenny Arnoff, Zorro, Leonard Haze and Will Calhoun. All performed extreme top notch talent.
The one performer that really made a life long impression of positive vibes of peaceful worldwide
Unity, not to mention jaw dropping and a skillfully polished performance was none other than my
Favorite Drummer and Human Being,
Wil "2 cool 4 school"
Calhoun.
Youre not fooling anyone colbert
🤣🤣🤣
I am a bass player, what am I even doing here ?
I couldn’t give a funk.
Why is this an ad that got shown to me it looks like a reg RUclips drummer video. I don’t get it I don’t get RUclips ads at all but Jesus they’re getting so bad. Interrupt your video 20 times in 10 mins. Some are 20 mins long themselves they’re making RUclips unbearable
Stanton you are to quiet can't here you playing
his jaw move side to side too much
