@@hvysouldg The 15's aren't going to be as "thick" sounding as those 17's but a dark/thin pair of Zildjian Constantinoples would get you going in the right direction!
Used to go hear Clyde play with his weekly blues and soul gig locally in the decade before he passed. He was a treasure & didn’t have star attitude. RIP Clyde.
Damn! You are one of the very few drummers that can accurately play those drum patterns. I was especially blown away when you played “Funky Drummer” and “Give It Up, Turn It Loose”. 💯
Clyde and Jabo taught me all about "tipping" the hi hat. Coming from a rock background, i was used to shouldering the hats to get a more aggressive sound, which was great, but I found Jabo and Clyde taught me how to stay in control of my hi hat work by keeping them soft. I.e "tippin'"

I keep coming back to these videos and trying to add these grooves to my arsenal. Can't thank you enough for this diverse and sharp content. You and Rob Brown are my favorite teachers. Quarantine is a breeze thanks to you guys.

Cold Sweat 4. I Got The Feelin 3. Can't Stand Myself 2. There Was A Time 1. Mother Popcorn I appreciate your admiration for the Godfather. And you're vicious on the skins, bro. Double or triple up on the foot and you'll be outrageous!
@@JeffRandallDrumming Thank you. That's an quite an honor, coming from a connoisseur and student of such master percussionists. I listened to each of your renditions, prior to your introduction of the title and could IMMEDIATELY recognize each song. That says alot. You're amazing! A master in your own right. Keep up the great work.
@@JeffRandallDrumming I'm sure you've already heard this but I consider it the funkiest drum solo of all of James' songs, as performed by William Bowman. It's in Part 2 of the song 'I Can't Stand Myself', staring at the 4:35 mark. If you haven't heard it, it's a real treat: ruclips.net/video/yP1wtlfs8lg/видео.html
Really enjoy your content, Jeff. It's refreshing to watch you play and teach in a space that feels so inundated with flashy, over the top chops. You share practical skills that we can all learn from. I admire your work!
James Brown's song titles were never boring, some were hilarious😂😂, Most reflected the legend's confidence his street cred, swagger and playful nature.
Excellent review and amazingly executed! You most definitely got the “soul” my friend! Lastly, you nailed the “Funky Drummer” beat at the end. I must say, clever technique for easing up on the wrist and forearm because of those continued 16th notes. Keep it up the great work!
Here are a few - There it is - Pts.1 & 2, Give it up or turnit a loose (Nate Smith drums studio rec:), Soul Power (Original version 1971), Talking loud saying nothing, The Payback, Give it up or turnit a loose( Live from Augusta GA 1969)
Great stuff, as always! I'm really excited about that little "trick" for the funky drummer! Makes it so much more accessible all at once!! Thank you so much!
Good Lord man your content is insane!! Great work Jeff!! being following you since a year and your videos never cease to improve! Greetings from Madrid Spain!!
Thank you!!!! Awesome video. I was just noodling around on my TD25 and I wanted to recall some of the grooves my teacher showed me years ago. This is PERFECT ... plus you have notation ... thanks so much Jeff!
Holy crap ... had to come back again Jeff ... just watching you feel the joy of playing is infectious. I'm not that accomplished, I just play for fun, but I do try to learn beats that are out of my comfort zone ... slowly ... and so I enjoy watching players and breaking down what is being played. I'm slowly learning Tom Sawyer and also the Rosanna Groove at present. Just really enjoy watching you on the kit ... cheers!
Really dig your rendition of Funky Drummer. I feel like the quick switches to eighth notes add to the groovy-ness and swagger. 🤙 P.S. feel you on Give it up or turn it a loose as my favorite of the bunch
This was awesome. I would like to see content, tips and tricks about Motown Grooves from you. Your videos are great for someone like me who does not play drums but produce songs. Thank you.
Man that second section of the super bad groove sounds sooooo good, could keep that on repeat all day! Do not know how you get your right hand so accurate with those groups of 3 while getting the snare part crispy too 😥 I had to really think about what my right hand was doing with that! Did not feel natural at all 😂 Keep doing what you’re doing my man! Really enjoy your videos. Love from Sheffield, England!
Practice “throwing the stick” so that its dribbling off the cymbal…if the stick is doing the work for you then you can focus more on cracking the snare 🫡
Awesome grooves! Can you do a video on funky fills as those are the things I struggle the most with? For example breaking down the fills you played in this video, they were pretty great!
Thanks Rich! I had “Mother Popcorn” on there originally but couldn’t get it quite right. Maybe we can do a ‘part 2’ at some point. There were so many I wanted to do but it would have made the video super long.
I’m working on Mother Popcorn it’s a killer. That’s a good version of that groove but I find the beginning of that song even more challenging because the hats are unrelenting ! Hard to keep these grooves nice and light. Thanks for the vid
Hey Jeff, Prayers for Nashville and the entire planet. Great work, this video is amazing!! I was interested in your Hi-hats as they sound perfect for groove based music, when I hit the Hi-hat links they showed up as crash cymbals.
Great drumming. He's really good! I know everyone was waiting to see if he would try The Funky Drummer. Not bad. Still...NOT like Clyde did it. Isn't it amazing that after all this time drummers are still trying to nail that beat down. Just like my man here, I had to come up with my own version of it. I still call it the most spontaneous accidental pieces of funk drumming in the history of music. I've seen numerous interviews with Clyde before he died and he was always asked to play it and refused. I think one time he kind of accidentally did it and everyone's eyes lit up. I'm not sure if it was because he didn't want people copying it or he really didn't recall how he did it in the first place 😂.
What’s up with the “I don’t play a lot of funk these days”??Why the heck not? You need to join a funk band someday, too brother! 👊🏻 You are THAT good. Doesn’t that sound like fun? Jamming like Clide? 💥
Haha, I’d love to play in a jazz/funk kind of group out here in Nashville at a certain point to keep those softer chops up! Just gotta find the time you know? Thanks as always Jim!
