  • IWC Portofino perpetual vs portugueser perpetual vs pilot watch perpetual. Vintage vs modern, and collecting after you already own more than enough watches.

I love and feel your love of IWC man! I've been collecting luxury watches for almost 15 years now, and IWC watches remain very close to my heart. Just something about the brand and their pieces.

They just speak to me. I’m afraid that the next brand that will speak to me later in life is going to be Vacheron.

@@Randyswatches Snap! I'm retiring this year at 54 and VC is my top choice as my retirement watch. Probably either a Traditionelle, or a Fiftysix

If I could only have one watch forever, I guess it would have to be an overseas black dial, probably dual time. But I’m wearing my spitfire today and I would miss it too much

Nice Job on all the videos, really enjoyed the 4 vid series. Once you get the Portofino, please share it with the watch geeks.

Absolutely. I’m considering the Portuguese over the Portofino. Hope I get it this year to share. Thanks for the nice words

I would throw some caution to the IWC perpetual calendars. You can't adjust the calendar backwards if you accidentally move it forward. Or just wait for it to catch up. You would need to send it back to IWC and they charge near $1K to reset.
I think you're getting to a point where if you want IWC, it may be worth looking into an Aquatimer to add a diver element unless you really want an office watch, dressed up. I would wait for W&W to happen in a couple of weeks to see what they release next.

That’s a great thought. We will just see how it plays out when I’m ready to make another purchase. Maybe a hand wound 8 days will strike next. Appreciate the comment.

save your $1,000. if you accidentally advance it forward, just let it wind down. time will catch up.

Any consideration on the rereleased Ingenieur? I placed an order for the black variant back in October and received it the next month. I did ask the IWC boutique if any strap options would be available for the model, last they said is no.
I was hesitant when the Ingenieur was first announced due to everyone’s comment about the price, but if you compare it to similar offerings - Chopard Alpine Eagle, GP Laureato, Piaget Polo, it’s not bad. Also seeing all the colors in person and trying them on really impressed me that I left the store placing an order. I was also initially not part of the integrated bracelet crowd - only the VC Overseas and this one interests me in this design space.

I think it’s slick, and I’d love to own the titanium version. My problem is I simply can’t wear non-adjustable metal bands. My wrist fluctuates quite a bit, probably up to a full centimeter. And I hate the feel of a watch bouncing off of the top of my hand.
I think all that matters is, how does it make you feel? If you don’t miss the money and you love wearing it, it should be good enough for a one-watch collection for sure!
If I were to build a collection with the ingeneiur, I’d have a titanium ingeneur, a blue dial portugueser 40mm, and a big pilot 43.

Great collection. I've got a Portuguese "Vintage" (IW544501) in my small, brand diverse collection. I enjoy that watch the most and have been considering shifting to an IWC focus as well. To round out a hypothetical 4-piece collection, I'd add a Pilot Chrono, an Ingenieur, and leave the last slot open to rotate through some cheap and cheerful microbrand divers.

Thanks for the comment. I’ve thought the Certina titanium or the Scurfa would be cool to own as beaters.
I never set out to collect one brand so heavily, but after the Spitfire, I just couldn’t help myself. If the ingenieur had an adjustable clasp a-la Vacheron, I’d spend the asking price for the titanium, but I won’t buy another metal bracelet without quick adjustment again.
Hopefully after the perpetual, I’ll back off and scoop up the occasional rare piece that speaks to me. Happy collecting.
