IWC lake Tahoe chronograph vs Top Gun Ceratanium 41
Просмотров 579Месяц назад
Thanks to the best watch dealer in Coulumbia SC, Joey at Reeds Jewelers for letting me come demo this customer order, the Lake Tahoe chronograph 44. I brought my top gun 41 for comparison and, although the watch is big, it still sings on my 6.5 inch wrist. I used iMovie sound so as not to get background chatter.

I agree, their 39-40 pilot watches are the most wearable and best fit for a got-to watch. But if you like to make a statement, the big watches are actually worth giving a shot.

      @Randyswatches 26 дней назад

      Well, the Richemont group has a lot of cross-pollination. And keep in mind that just because something is “in-house”, doesn’t make it exclusive… this dates all the way back to the Daytona and Zenith, and Breitling and Tudor, and an endless list of others. An example of an in-house and exclusive movement would be like the Oris 5 day calibre, or certain Omega movements. Regarding IWC, it seems a few models, such as the 36mm pilot watches, use sellita base with upgrades. Otherwise it’s all Richemont owned.

    The overseas is 2.5 times the price, so it's an odd comparison. AP, nautilus is 4-5 times the price. The complaint of no micro adjustment on the ingeniur does not make sense if the watch fits you, so you have to try it on. To say the ingeniur doesn't offer anything over mark 20 is not true. I sat down whith both at a boutique with a jewelers loop. The 2 are very different levels of finishing, and that's one of the most expensive ave time consuming processes of watch manufacturing. Ingeniur has hand painted dial with hand finished bracelet done to a holy trinity level. So to say generic could not be further from the truth.

    The other Spitfire bronze which belongs to the Big Pilot family has a twin barrel system which makes it highly accurate even with the 8 day power reserve. Annoyingly tho, the big date is at the 12 o’clock position so you cannot see the date change at midnight when the hands block your view. The geniuses at the IWC design team felt that this was a good idea, and they also felt the need to put the 8 day power reserve display on the back of the watch, making it easier for you to crash the plane if you lost track of time and decided to take your hands off the steering wheel so that you could take off the watch to see how much power reserve was remaining on the watch.

      It’s a great piece, and more are becoming available. It also wears very light for its size. The cost is due to the ceratanium, which has a high failure rate in production. It’s a very difficult metal to mass produce. There are less expensive full titanium or ceramic versions that I think look great, and don’t discount stainless steel. There’s a specific C.03 with black on stainless steel that is a 250 piece limited edition that is stunning.

    Love your passion for IWC. I’m equally enamored with the brand. I bought the white dial Mark XX last fall. Still love it. But I LOVE the blue dial too. So tempted to buy the blue dial on a blue leather strap, knowing I can switch the bracelet to either watch. Am I nuts to buy the blue in the same model? Have also thought about getting the blue dial 43mm Big Pilot. I owned it in the past and sold it. Big mistake. I’ve done that with watches too many times. That blue sailcloth strap looks amazing on the blue dial.

      It’s a journey. I’m infatuated with them all. I think your journey is your own, and there’s no shame in rectifying a mistake, but maybe consider something outside of your style comfort zone that would be an occasional or weekend piece rather than an everyday. And maybe let it come to you rather than pursuing a look. As for the straps, call the 1916 company and let them know you need IWC straps. The concierge will hook you up with genuine straps at a discount, or consider thestraptailor.com and search IWC.

    I tried the Engineur and liked it but it costs about 2 times what it should. That watch is (to me) worth $5K tops

      Thanks for the input. I wouldn’t go that far. I’d simply say that it not the timepiece I’d engineer in 2024 given the competition. I’d have flexed my watchmaking prowess.

    Love a nato strap. I’ve just popped one on my Omega Seamaster 300m Chronograph. Looks great. I have a nice green one on my Longines steel Bigeye too. Defo feeds into the pilot vibe. That’s for sure.

      Thanks for sharing. Those are great pieces. It’s great to be able to simply remove the strap/bracelet from the mark xx and slap a NATO on it. It’s the best argument against an integrated bracelet watch.

    There are Chopard Alpine Eagle, GP Laureato, Zenith Defy as competitors when they came up to the price. IWC provides some value in that it was designed by Genta himself while the other 3 are Genta inspired/integrated bracelet for their modern releases. Sure there are arguments that GP and Zenith released their original versions earlier than their counterparts historically, but the new releases borrows heavily on the Genta design elements. So if you compare within that space, I think IWC has some advantages. The other point of contention is the movement - it is borrowed, but a lot of other brands do that as well - Rolex recycles movements - Exp II and GMT, Tudor from Breitling B01, VC for the FiftySix. The borrowed movement provides 100m water resistance, 120 hr power reserve. Again if you compare that to the GP, Chopard, and Zenith - not all of them provide that. I’m not attacking you just providing counter arguments.

      I did see an interview recently with the IWC CEO that they have plans on expanding the Ingenieur line later this year

    • @Randyswatches
      @Randyswatches 2 месяца назад

      Thanks, I appreciate the point of view. Maybe I’m salty because I wanted to explore that line, but I just can’t do a fixed-length bracelet, and I love strap options. I just think that, with IWCs incredible engineering history, they could have flexed and made a great watch… a real competitor to the overseas and Alpine Eagle. Keep following, maybe one day I’ll go vintage Ingenieur or buy a new model that they really put some effort into. Especially if it’s in titanium.

      @kbo513 Link?? I hope not, for my bank account’s sake. Seriously though, if they can do it without de-valuing the owners of the current model, I’m all for it. Thanks for the comment.

      @@Randyswatches Yes I like easy exchange strap options too. Zenith is definitely one brand that offers extra straps AND easy exchange. I got to meet and talk to the Zenith CEO in W&Ws - I’m set to get their blue Extreme diver. Got into them when they released the Zenith pilot. The IWC Ingeniuer has half links included for the standard bracelet. I was originally set to purchase the VC Overseas but Richmont group got greedy - made the blue Boutique exclusive and eventually dropped a lot of ADs in my area. I don’t want to play the game all over again for one piece when most of my purchase history was with my AD.

    Swiss watches are like that 😅. They won’t not give the best version of the watch on their first launch. It is a marketing strategy so that you spend the money to buy this version first. When they release an improved version you will upgrade the your current one. Rolex and Tudor are good examples

      I’d like to think it isn’t pre-planned obsolescence. More likely, it is a combination of artwork and machinery, as well as fashion. Since fashion changes and machines can be improved, I think it’s more likely that consumer feedback over time drives incremental improvements.
