    Your "how to" build a cabin videos are one of the best if not the BEST on the internet.The attention to detail and understanding of construction and engineering is to be appreciated. Many of the internet "cabin builders" just don't know what it takes to build a structure that is both safe, durable, comfortable and energy efficient. Your cabin is truly "BUILT TO LAST" and will still be standing 100 years from now. Keep up the good work and keep the videos coming. We can all learn from them.

      Thank you so much John, this is really heart warming to read as this is exactly what I am thriving for with this channel. I really want to convey as much technical information as possivle without turning it into a boring lecture. Yep, the videos will keep coming as there is still a lot to be done before this cabin is complete...

      Thanks a lot! Oh there is so much left to be done, on the top of my head : running the electrical and plumbing to the cabin, insulation, smart vapor barrier inside, tongue and groove, building a full bathroom and small kitchen, installing all the lights, receptacles, flooring … and on and on

    The finished exterior looks amazing. As the builder you are harder and more critical of your mistakes. I am the same way but that's why your end result is so beautiful. I have been bing watching all your videos over that last three days . I have only done that with one other build on RUclips. Keep up the great work.

I wanted to congratulate you on your channel and on your home, I found it interesting that you record and publish all the setbacks and changes that occur in such a complex project that is building a house in its structure, hydraulic and electrical. You may regret installing the siding so tight to the end trim board. No room for expansion, they may buckle. Usually leave at min 1/8 space and caulk with color match exterior rated caulk. Looks great, hopefully it doesn't buckle on you 🤞

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy
      @TheDIYCabinGuy  Год назад +3

      Yeah I was worried about that, having said that, I think I do have 1/16” on the ends typically. Time will tell if this was a stupid decision. I guess if Eveything started o buckle on me, I’d cut a channel at the ends with my circular saw setting the right depth and caulk it all.

    You need to put a backing course of shakes for your first row. Ah, I see you did address that… 😅yes, you saw what the issue was going to be. If you used black tar paper behind it it would have made it much harder to see the gaps. I see you redoing this in the future as your OCD may not let that one go. Otherwise awesome build.

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy

      I wouldn't call myself a professional by any small stretch but if I scratch my bald head enough I can figure stuff out. I purchased a 6 acre piece of dirt out in the middle of nowhere off grid. Been collecting tools and equipment required to clear and do earthwork and getting nervously excited about breaking ground. Your videos and others like it is helping me warm up to the idea. Did you have plans drawn up for your cabin or did you get them off of Etsy or another venue? It also looks like you have been around the trade or may have had some guidance if this has been your first rodeo.@@TheDIYCabinGuy

    Doesn't the second layer of shingles give you more of the sloped look than the one layer does?

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy
      @TheDIYCabinGuy  Год назад

      What do you mean by sloped look?
      What I was supposed to do was to put two layers (one directly on top of the first one, staggered) just for the first row then everything I did for the second row and up was fine.

    • @retired0307
      @retired0307 Год назад +1

      @TheDIYCabinGuy yes, that was what I was referring to. That second layer would lap over the gaps between the first layer shingles.
      If you think you want to , you could pry up the bottom edge of the second row & drive a new shingle under it. Either way, I really like what you've done.

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy

    • @TheDIYCabinGuy
      @TheDIYCabinGuy  Год назад +2

      Would have been better to do that in all honestly, also would have been better to add some rigid foam insulation before putting the siding up to make it very energy efficient.
      Code is fine with the way I did it.

    • @brotesser1
      @brotesser1 Год назад +2

      I see. On my cabin i put battons up and put the siding on them. Also a lot more work because i wanted to make that room behind the siding vermin-proof with steel nets. The rigid foam would have also be a good addition to reduce the thermal bridging from the wood studs. But sometimes life is just to short haha
