G’day guys, cheers for posting the Amarok video. I bought a 6speed man trendline in 2011 on the 2nd day they went on sale down here. 6 Years later I traded it in on an 8sp Highline. I trust it totally, I’m heading in to the outback next winter with it. Happy Amaroking guys
Hi Guys, A sensible real world review. I tried all the competition over 3 months and bought a 12k mile 2016 non-Ad-blue model VW Amarok 2.0Ltr BiTurbo High-line Auto. It does all I need on and off road in real comfort (I just traded a Lexus GS450h); I'm not loosing much comfort. The load capacity is more than enough for my expeditions along the Welsh riversides and the car feels totally dependable. The 3.2 Ranger was agricultural in comparison, and the Toyota Hilux felt under powered. Navarra always seem to rust on the chassis rails, even from new! Although the Navarra run the Amarok close. Keep on trucking!
Great review totally honest and unbiased. I have a 63 plate and totally unhold every word said. Yes 3ltr is awesome but because of UK law is too heavy for the limit on a Dual Purpose vehicle (2040kg) and so has speed restrictions as for a van imposed on it. 50 mph on unrestricted single carriage roads and 60mph on unrestricted dual carriageways. Remember that the new Smart Cameras are linked direct to DVLA records. The 2 litre is perfectly adequate and can be remapped to improve on the edges.
I've got a 2010 Golf. I've had it since it was 8 months old. I've always wondered why Golfs were so popular but once you drive one you know why. It's like floating on a cloud!
Thanks for the vid... I'm getting my Amarok shortly! Not the V6 though, way to expensive. Settled for the BiTDI instead, with all the pots and pans (still cheaper than the V6). Will miss my Navara...
@@LordMuck subscribed but not delved into your channel much, but I gather you'd have a lot of experience with landys. Is the amarok that much better? Head says amarok heart says defender 🤔
Good video Kurt, the amarok is certainly a worthy successor to the caddy, I bought a 2014 navara in December and really like it, so much more comfortable the our L200, the only thing that let's it down is fuel consumption, struggle to get 25 mpg BUT it's got some oomph, the 3 litre 230hp V6 pulls well.
Great review as always Muck. My D-max just hit 100k today. Probably going to keep it a while longer yet and see how long it will last under mostly heavy towing. Had it from new so always serviced as well as I can. I’ll try and get some working footage up one day got the camera just need the time to fiddle with it and work out this editing lark.
Wow, what a great review! Your a natural - yet another string to your bow! How on earth do you do 36,000 miles in six months? Don’t you like home? Brilliant video Kurt ha ha.
I was like you few years ago deciding what Ute to chose yeah Ranger had big motor but cabin feel tight for size. Towing was not big factor but L200 n Toyota was low. Service cost and Insurance rule out VW so that left me with Holden, Isuzu and Nissan. Well after 60,000 km on clock my uncle has Holden and it dash switches were stuff. Out blue on day found space cab Nissan D40 for right price with 40,000 kms I went and brought it. Today Ute market has change MBenz has Ute now, L200 can tow 3.1t, Toyota n Holden r having engine problems so my decision might be different but enjoying my D40. Although I did look at Mahindra Ute but doesn’t come with automatic transmission but who know in few years. Great vid👍
Great video once again funny enough I bought my first vw golf last August with the dsg gearbox would never of considered a auto till I test drove it now thinking when I come to changing the navara I'll be tempted to go for a auto oh and maybe amarok very pleased with the golf so far.
The big engine might work out more economical. a bigger engine working at its ease, compared to a smaller engine under strain. 2 liter seems a bit small for this type of 4 by 4 . Very good video 🚙🚙🚙👍👍👍👍
Fine looking truck to be fair. Hard to beat German Engineering, although I would buy a Hilux or an Izuzu if I were after a pick-up as our 2006 Landcruiser is as tight as a drum still after 250,000 kms.
Sounds like the VW suits you Kurt I got rid of my ford ranger that was a good truck and bought a crew cab transit 3.5 tipper 2 years ago and it has been great for my business should i have bought one years ago
i went with an L200. cheapest pick up i think. 15.000 euros less then a hi lux, and its a better truck then the toyota. had it two years soon and i love that little thai truck. a joy to drive and works very well up here in the arctic. the defroster on the front window could be better, but thats the only thing i can put my finger on.
Could you do a follow up vid if you've still got it? Any breakdowns, common faults to look out for when buying? I drove a mates today and it was night and day compared to my td5 110. Never had an auto but I think I've been converted....
Lord Muck great video, really liked it. So will you be keeping the VW 2014 or are you planning on purchasing a new one? Also do you mind me asking how much you paid for the 2014? Cheers
Looks bigger but is actually smaller in most dimensions. I love the Ranger but the Amarok, especially with the permanent 4x4 just stays ahead. I want to see what the new Ford/VW truck will be like.
Been looking at the Amarok for the last few months and your videos have been very reassuring that I’m on the right track. Looking for an older model because of costs; where would you say the sweet spot is for a year / mileage?
Nice review, at least you're man enough to admit your mistakes. I always thought the small engines would be a bit useless either in performance or reliability. And as for your mileage, don't you like it at your house?
My work takes me all over the UK and Europe. I have a hectic 6 months and then it normally settles for 6 months. To be fair I’ve done the mileage in nearer 7 months than 6.
well i bought a toyota hilux in 1997 its been though all mots like a dose o salts and still going good i will keep it till it dies like u say there all good
Blimey im in cornwall so very short roads apart from one. I think between 3 vehicles I may do 15 to 20k over 12 months using for business duties. Just surprised the amount you do. Cheers for now.
Here’s a question, what’s your thoughts on the fact that vw lied about there emissions? I’m surprised that people would be willing to give there hard made money to a company that is happy to lie to its customers? Can’t understand it, I enjoyed the video none the less and have followed you for a few years now 😀
If I’m totally honest I can’t see what the fuss was about. VW had tweaked the cars to give more power and the emissions were more than the Californian laws allowed (read up on Californian state laws - even military trucks had to have reduced emissions they are that anal about it all) A lot of people saw a chance for compensation so they joined in with being ‘upset and outraged’ in an effort to get money. China pumps billions and billions of units of dirty air into the sky every year and we’re all getting upset by a Golf that can do 0-60 in 3 weeks ? I’ve checked my box of F*cks and believe me, it’s empty....
I’ve got a 2013 L200 Barbarian but looking to change as I don’t feel it handles having 300-400kg of weight in the back along with towing all that well, so was thinking maybe a ford ranger 3.2l or an Amarok, what would be your suggestion for the above, baring in mind I work in the same industry as yourself, and would you say the auto is a better towing gearbox? Any info appreciated?
I suggest you go and try a few for yourself. You've seen what I found in the vids and I didn't find a bad vehicle among them and so I'd encourage you to try them for yourself now and see what suits you. Auto all the way....!
I'm 6ft and I reckon I could go back a couple more clicks if I wanted on the seat rail so you should be okay. As comfortable as any pickup on a long journey I would say.
It used to be 50-60,000 but these days it’s probably 40-50,000. The VW mileage has been done in nearer 7 months. Travelling decreases for me this time of year but don’t forget I travel all over the UK and Europe.
The Merc is actually slightly redesigned (70mm wider overall with wider track setting than the Navara) but yes, chassis, drivetrain and engine are the same.

I've had my Amarok High line 180bhp for 3years now. Loved every day I've owned it. Will plump for the V6 next I'm sure. Great vid, thanks.👍
Great trucks. Glad you enjoyed the vid
Loved the review mate, currently looking at the Wildtrak and Amarok 2.0, this video has been a huge help many thanks!
Another fab review Lord Muck! Have always liked the look of the Amarok. Always seemed like a handsome truck.
Eating your words and admitting it. Nice one Lord Muck. Glad you're liking your pick up too. I am thinkong about one rather than the Transporter.

In a pickup George it’s a game changer.
Lord Muck yes I was shocked at the difference when I changed from a 110 defender to a Navara
