VW Amarok V6 v Ford Ranger V6 Dragparison: Drag race, sound test & 0-100!

  • As promised, here is a set of performance runs and then a drag race between the 2023 Ford Ranger Sport V6 and the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok W580X! It's much closer than we thought it would be!
    Some things to note - this is the only spec of Amarok we could get our hands on. Despite all of the equipment it has on it as part of the W580X pack, it's still around 50kg lighter than the Ranger.
    Big shout out to Berwick Volkswagen for helping us out with sourcing the Amarok! They have stacks of these available, so if you're in the market for any Volkswagen products, please have a chat with Mervyn at Berwick Volkswagen!

The ford will increase its sales, now that it has a serious engine. It will be interesting to see whether the the ten speed or eight speed proves most popular.

    Amarok is quicker in “D” than “S”. It’s quicker again with manual shifts. “S” holds the gears well past peak torque. You should be able to get another 3 tenths out of it. It look though that the Ford is torque limited in the lower gears to protect the gearbox.

These people just don't drive the car the correct way and are just trying to create interest in the new ford/vw amarok. If you want a true test get an amarok owner and car with no association to these people and try and keep up. Ps the S mode is only for off road really.

      I've only got a 4cly amarok but i find manual shift 1st into 2nd at 3000rpm is best then shift 4300 in the rest of the gears.
      I fitted a bigger intercooler and bigger intake pipe.
      before the V6 came out i used to love overtaking other new utes and the look on their faces seeing the amarok overtake them from behind before reaching 100km/h was priceless.
      before the intercooler and pipe it used to back off around 3200rpm but with the mods around 3100rpm you could feel it pulling harder all the way to 4500 cut off.
      it really felt more like a gas engine and it was hard to remember to up-shif.
      i think if the ecu was set to rev higher it would pull to 5000 before losing puff

    Ex Landrover tech here, the v6 they are going putting in both utes goes very well and can have anything up to 306 bhp depending on tuning/turbo configuration, great engine but my god it explod’s way too often! Apparently though they are going changing the crankshaft from cast to forged which is there main cause of failure so hopefully the newer one may hold up a bit better!

      In the UK the fully emissionised VW V6 in the Amarok has not got the best of reliability reputations. It’s the emission system that has failed multiple times with two of my friends. One of them was on contract hire and it was out of commission so many times and for so long, he terminated the contract. The other was bought slightly use but with warranty and they can’t get parts for long times and when they do, it only sorts it for a few months.
      Oddly, I’ve not heard of this issue with the engine in Audi cars. New Amaros have not been sold in the UK for about a year, possibly longer, for some reason. Used values are very high.

    it's a known fact that the w580x is slower than the adventure. if you want compare apples with apples you should have had both of them on the same tyres.

      It’s the only one they could get, the true apples to apples comparison would be the v6 sport vs the v6 Highline 580 imo

    This is embarrassing.
    The Amarok W580X is a stock Amarok with off road suspension, taller ride height, more off road focused tyres, a snorkel, lightbar and under body protection. It is a SLOWER off road version of standard Amarok 580.

    • @glenns7175
      @glenns7175 Год назад

      You have to keep both utes at the same weight and test it that way because the ranger is and always has been heavier and has higher GVM and GCM. Its stronger and everything is heavier on it, more extras in safety and the low-range box, and its quite a lot longer in the wheelbase. And test them again with a trailer or decent load in the back and see how added weight affects performance and the extra torque on the ranger engine might put it a bit more in front. I'm not a fan of the latest ranger because I think its now an ugly car but that's just how it is.

    I tested and locked in new v6 the other day, however while testing i wondered if the transmission restricted it a bit? almost felt like it was holding gears a bit long and power would drop off - remember thinking gee stop mucking around with so many gears and get going! I wonder if you manually changed it would be better.... ? Getting desperate i know.

    • @deangrima

    The amarok will always be a bit of a modern legend but I think the rangers v6 has a huge amount of response and power tuned out of it.

  • @CM303898
    @CM303898 Год назад +4

    Lots of comments suggesting "just do this", or "use this setting", or "even out the tyres", or "equalise the weights exactly" etc. If you have to pump lots of settings, and configure more parameters, it's not just a stock "Turn on and go in default" comparison then. It's a test for those that are chomping at the bit to win. That hardly happens out in the real world.
    Maybe the Ranger could be faster if it could skip some gears. Maybe it'd be faster in other driving modes. Likely would be better in towing acceleration at speed. Lots of "other" ways to compare the two.
    Either way, it's not a lot of difference. You'd be pretty foolish to opt for an older Amarok solely for "can beat a new Ranger by 0.2s to 100kph" though! There's so much more to it, and literally no one else would care. You'd have to be a fairly shallow person to make that your justification for owning a decade old model.
    This was for fun, but not a scale tipping consumer review. If the Ranger had been 2 seconds slower, that might have been concerning. Even if it had been a second faster; that would have been seen as "to be expected". 0.2s is reaction speed difference for most people. Certainly if you were at the lights where 2 lanes merge to 1 on the other side, the driver who reacts faster will get the right of way.
    Great review for the sake of clearing any doubt, but in no way an outcome that would sway a buyer.

    If it is like the RR Disco, it changes the Auto mapping to increase reaction with the box.
