VW is a good engine and good car, the ranger also now looks ugly im my opinion so im not rushing out to buy one anymore. But the ford engine is quite old also, just new for the Ranger. Power is power, one makes a little more torque, the other a little more KW, one is 8 speed and one is 10 speed. The 10 speed might be better for fuel economy but it might not be the best in 0-100. We don't know if the Ford may be the fastest with a load with total weight of both being equal and there are variations between different cars, another ranger or amarok may perform slightly better or worst than another. The Ford is also engineered for newer emissions regulations so much more power can be had with aftermarket tuning. The difference in performance in this test is quite small as expected as the power is near enough the same but there is a weight difference. Take out the extra safety, strengthening and low range gearbox and the weight would be reduced closer to the amarok and the performance would improve.
This is embarrassing. The Amarok W580X is a stock Amarok with off road suspension, taller ride height, more off road focused tyres, a snorkel, lightbar and under body protection. It is a SLOWER off road version of standard Amarok 580.
You have to keep both utes at the same weight and test it that way because the ranger is and always has been heavier and has higher GVM and GCM. Its stronger and everything is heavier on it, more extras in safety and the low-range box, and its quite a lot longer in the wheelbase. And test them again with a trailer or decent load in the back and see how added weight affects performance and the extra torque on the ranger engine might put it a bit more in front. I'm not a fan of the latest ranger because I think its now an ugly car but that's just how it is.
It was first released in 2004 as a 2.7 variant. It’s been in Fords, jags, Land Rovers, Citroens and Peugeots. So it’s anything but new. Decent donk though.
Hi Paul. Love this dragparison all the way from South Africa. What if you hooked up some caravans or trailers and repeated the test? Could be very interesting....cheers

my 2015 trendline is 2200. i think if they put them or a proper weighbridge it would be different weight even with only 10L of fuel. plus also the DPF loading would effect the times as my 2014 always felt like it gained 50 hp 10 min after a regen lol
Snorkel facing the wrong way dude. The ram design is engineered to collect air facing forwards. Why do something people only do in extreme dust conditions?? Just curious
Well Paul shows if VW could have addressed the rear airbag issue and infotainment it would still stack up well! Its still a cracking beast can wait for the VW tuned version of the Fjord no so wildtrak Has the wildtrak been tamed ??
@@perpelle A slightly longer cab would have been great, add in the extras for safety and tech, it would be my choice. In the end it still seems to me we don't have one ute that is perfect. The Ranger has everything you would want now in features but the cab looks too narrow for the wide front that put on it. And the frontal design is just a bit odd looking and so the black paint work helps cover that up a bit but in white its quite awful, especially is the lower spec models.
Remove some of the added strengthening, safety equipment, extra low-range gearbox that the Ranger has over the Amarok and then see which one is faster. But i'm sure its a good engine and i'd trust the 8 speed ZF, it makes good power but probably no longer meets emissions.
The Ford TDV6 was first used in the LR 319 ( Disco 3) way back in 2004. To be honest this engine was also used in the Peugeot 407 Coupe before that as it is a PSA designed engine.
@@johnboy5167 just how it is. The Ranger weighs more. Its much longer but power is similar. But Ford meets newer emissions and safety standards, the old amarok does not. If you swapped the engines around I'm sure the results would still be much the same. Or load up the amarok to get the weights similar.
If the engine in the ford is in actual fact the same or similar to the Landrover v6 that makes me nervous because they break crankshafts on a regular basis.

Breakfast menu might have caused the slower ranger compared to few weeks earlier? Just a thought.
So the V6 isn't a new development, but from a landrover?
It was first released in 2004 as a 2.7 variant. It’s been in Fords, jags, Land Rovers, Citroens and Peugeots. So it’s anything but new. Decent donk though.
The original Lion V6 diesel was a joint venture design engine used by multiple brands built by Ford UK since the early 2000's.
The numbers are close but I would rather go for ride quality, maintenance costs especially fuel economy
Go the amarok then, better fuel economy
Hi Paul. Love this dragparison all the way from South Africa. What if you hooked up some caravans or trailers and repeated the test? Could be very interesting....cheers
Why is the snorkel on backwards on the amarok
Well there be a Amarok version of the Everest?
Great video as always Paul👍🏻
I personally test drove amarok 2.0 biTDi manual. My goodness, that amarok is quick!
nice trucks...
your contents should be how much fuel consumed with that v6 in an hour on that rqce track!
i bet its quite expensive for an ordinary persons fuel expenses....
W580 could be little heavier than 580 Highline, because I can get 7.2 seconds 0-100 in my 580 Highline.
my 2015 trendline is 2200. i think if they put them or a proper weighbridge it would be different weight even with only 10L of fuel.
plus also the DPF loading would effect the times as my 2014 always felt like it gained 50 hp 10 min after a regen lol
can you do a float comparison next see which floats longer in a river crossing....
Chance it could be 17inch rims on the xlt that's quicker off the line than the 18inch wheels on the sport?
How many Ks does that ranger have on the clock, compared to the Amarok?
Snorkel facing the wrong way dude. The ram design is engineered to collect air facing forwards. Why do something people only do in extreme dust conditions?? Just curious
hi could you do the new raptor ranger vs the amarok v6?
Hey Paul, are you going to do a Sport review?
It'd be pretty cool if you also added brake tests to these videos. Cool video as always, keep it up!
That would be a good idea as that is really even more important than the slight different in 0-100 times.
Are they both Diesel Turbo?
Liked before watching
Well Paul shows if VW could have addressed the rear airbag issue and infotainment it would still stack up well! Its still a cracking beast can wait for the VW tuned version of the Fjord no so wildtrak
Has the wildtrak been tamed ??
It needs the full safety tech as well including keyless, higher wading depth, more cab choices etc.
What are the price differences between these?
I thought the amarok would have been quicker, Its still very impressive considering. how long that engine has been around without a rival.
Nissan V9X killed the amarok original tune that’s why they steeped it up more than 10years ago.
@@glenns7175 excuses typical Ford lover 😁
@@johnboy5167 just how it is. The Ranger weighs more. Its much longer but power is similar. But Ford meets newer emissions and safety standards, the old amarok does not. If you swapped the engines around I'm sure the results would still be much the same. Or load up the amarok to get the weights similar.
please remember to also give us a comparison with the new Amarok when its ready.
The amarok will always be a bit of a modern legend but I think the rangers v6 has a huge amount of response and power tuned out of it.
do dmax vs bt50 cause they share the platform with isuzu
Hi, Paul can you please do the rolling race❤🙏
Thank you Paul
The snorkel was backwards aswel that is a significant disadvantage
Waiting for the top speed test.
Video starts at 11:43
You should doo an 1/8th mile towing test with a 2 tonne trailer, same format and see what happens.
It would be the same, Ford heavily torque reducing first gears to make warranty period. Amarok has no transfer box with low ratios.
Doesn’t the Walkinshaw have a tuned engine?
Nope.
Wat about the nissan navara v6
Walkinshaw Amarok tuned hey ??
It's not tuned
Hmm.. Off late Paul has been super crazy about UTEs LOL!
Ide like to see this done with the normal amarok instead of the w580
the normal ones are faster
W580 only has suspension and tyre difference. No engine mods.
That’s interesting, have a look at fullboost’s video with the ranger breakdown, they weighed the xlt at 2.3t exact
Nice job, could you please review honda passport also
If the engine in the ford is in actual fact the same or similar to the Landrover v6 that makes me nervous because they break crankshafts on a regular basis.
Apparently they have switched to a forged crank like in the f150 to stop the Jlr crank snapping party piece
@@billytremoloband7456
I would have thought all Diesel engines had forged bottom ends.
It’s the CGI blocks chocking oil to the bearings. The CGI V9X had the same issues, I have done oil samples and tested mine. Brass was common made it to warranty period. I still believe also 5/30 drains out to much it’s thin shit.
Did you check tyre pressures between the XLT and the Sport? A big difference could impact rolling resistance and therefore acceleration.
Interesting video, doesn't change my mind on which to buy, but still fyi....
honestly would 've thought the amarok was going to leave the ranger behind because of the Walkinshaw enhancements, but was the amarok just stickers and a name ??
Why not try the new bt-50 SP vs the dmax X terrain. Almost everything is the same
