Oriental models have for too long held sway in the UK pick-up truck market, a state of affairs that for some years now, Volkswagen has been looking to change. Having established itself as a purveyor of 4x4 passenger cars, the German brand sought to cross over into the off-road commercial vehicle market with the original version of its Amarok pick-up, a model we evaluate as a used buy here and one that was only offered in the UK in doublecab form. Big, economical and very capable, Volkswagen's off-road load-lugger aimed to give the Japanese contingent a few sleepless nights. But will it give you peace of mind as a secondhand purchase?

At 6.32 you say that "all wheel drive is the first option and should be fine for slippery on-tarmac use". I believe you are wrong and it is actually four wheel drive (locked centre diff) which will create binding and stress on the drivetrain on any surface with decent traction. I'm hoping to be proven wrong as I've actually just bought one and was sad to hear that it doesn't have a full time 4x4 mode (all wheel drive). Other varients of 4motion are all wheel drive for use on all surfaces. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My Amarok is from 2011. It has 200,000 kms and I don't change it because I can't find a vehicle of this quality/price on the market.Of course, some expensive maintenance operations are essential, but given the prices of new or used pic-ups, it's worth it. It's a Swiss knife I need. This "truck" loves the road, loves the rutted paths of the countryside, likes to transport people, plants cut after gardening, materials, tools etc

The ranger needs to settle for scraps he says? It’s been the best selling pick up in my country in the last decade ahead of the hilux

Decent truck until the rear half shaft seal starts to leak and VW want approx 1k for a shaft as the seal and bearing are not sold seperate.
