The gear lever on a modern auto is only a switch lever sending signals to an ECU; all the manual work is done by solenoids and servos. So, you can't wear out the gearbox dodad thingamijig flange by holding the gear lever switch.
I have to say. Having spent a considerable amount of my upbringing in Africa where the roads weren't so great, these are everyday cars and they make alot of sense. But in Britain, they are an odd car to own unless you need a workhorse. The running costs thanks to fuel prices aren't great whereas in Africa it's not unheard of to get diesel at just over 80p per litre if not cheaper.
Bit of additional info... all the v6 engines in these are mechanically identical, they just run different maps. So buy any power level v6 and get a simple remap from somewhere like darkside, and you’ll have 300bhp. If you look hard enough you can find these with rear lockers. Worth having.
I had two Amaroks, the rear seats were I’m told not very comfy. Sold the second one when diesel-gate happened and it came back from a service and the MPG had dropped considerably. The dealer plugged it in to do a software update, and I’m convinced VW retro downgraded the car to lessen the sh1t storm coming their way.
How could the MPG possibly change? You put fuel in and get miles out. Software doesn't have anything to do with it, unless you just didn't compute your fuel spend
Just my own experience, but I've also had 2 of them with the current one a 2018 68 plate now with 47K miles. I've only ever seen the mpg improve with age.
@@mvubu6823 Of course software factors in on any modern car. Do you have any idea how much software and computing goes into a modern engine. The ECU controls how much is injected, throttle response, power output, timing, ignition etc. Unplug the ECU on your car and see how it runs without it.
@@mvubu6823 Of course software has something to do with it. Especially with the VW Diesel scandal. They had software which recognized when the car was being tested for emissions and ran the car with a different engine map (which meant less performance and fuel efficiency, but also less emissions). Later, they removed that cheat, so even in normal driving, you had less emissions and less performance/efficiency. So it could very well be that once your car went to the dealer after the emissions scandal went public, that you got your car back with worse fuel efficiency if they removed the cheat via a software update. In fact, that is exactly what was reported in German car magazines by people who had the software update done on their cars.
Nice to see chrome bumpers on these, i can't think of any other modern day vehicles that have chrome bumpers, makes you feel proud to polish them. When i were a lad, chrome bumpers were common on almost every car, it's was normal.

G'day, I've got one and it is good for long trips. 2400km in 24 hours, 2 drivers. long range fuel tank, Bull Bar and lots of good lights. It is lousy when you need a VW dealer and the closest one is 900km each way. I have the fancy "sports bar" and it is the dumbest idea for a tray addition. It blocks access and you cannot tie rope's onto it.
My main gripe with the Amarok is that it's built in that bastion of quality vehicle manufacturing, Argentina. Which means the build quality is at best shaky. I have less of an issue with buying a ute made in Argentina than I do with paying made in Germany prices for the same ute. A friend who runs his own electrical contracting business bought a brand new Amarok last year, and the rear door handle came off in his hand the day he got it home. The following day the rear courtesy light fell out. It's had a CEL on the dash for 2 months that VW keep resetting but not actually fixing, and Apple Carplay works as and when it feels like it. By comparison, my 2020 Mitsubishi Triton (L200 in the UK) hasn't had so much as an oil top up despite doing about 40000kms more.
Can't comment on your region, which I'm guessing is Australia. But they are made in Hanover, Germany for the UK market and I've found build to be extremely good, and in line with what I expect from VW group vehicles. The only fault on the 2 of them I've had (2027 & 2018 models) is a NOX sensor failure at 45,000 miles, which was sorted under warranty.
@@highlandmalt6368 Yes, we don't tend to get the same vehicles as Europe, which makes the ridiculous prices we pay for German cars even more of a joke. Yet we pay way more (usually 30-40% more) for them than you pay for the equivalent German-built cars sold in Europe.

Would something like adding Redex Diesel system cleaner in each regular diesel fill up do the same job? It would be a quarter of the price.
In regards to diesels. Although not exactly legal you can semi restrict the egr value with a blanking plate with a small hole in the middle of them. You will improve lower end power and run them on the motorway as expected.
Love the Amarok I really wish the classifications for pick-up trucks were changed. My understanding is that ALL are commercial vehicles. You can buy van based MPVs to benefit from the lower cost and huge room. I wish you had similar with pick ups where you have to have the canopy on the back for civvy use and have one removed for business.
Out of all the pick ups, this has gotta be my favourite. Especially that v6. My boss had a couple of them for work vehicles, I was trying to get 1, but gotta stick with my Vito. Can’t complain really.
when my l200 pick was nearly 3yrs old it had a recall i , when sat waiting for the recall to be completed, the service manager said we notice your side steps are slightly corroded bring the truck back tomorrow and we will replace them F O C , unlike nic woods treatment , iv owned 3 mitsubishi`s sorry to see them pull out uk market as they all gave good service , rip cant see where a pickup especially in auto mode more difficult to drive than a car for instance i don`t like front wheel drive cars but they are not difficult , how hard can it be
The last Amarok I saw, had just come back from a service. In the night, the Amarok caught alight because of a fuel leak. The house it was parked next too, burned to the ground, fortunately, the family got out thanks to a decent fire alarm system. Volkswagen of Dover, Kent, were the last 'people' to touch it. Apparently, the leaking fuel system was a well known fault - wow, some 'fault'.
If you need a truck that drives like a car buy a car, these things are too big for day to day joe blogs who fancy one just to be king of the road, pointless unless you've deep pockets, my old 1985 Hi Lux 4x4 I reckon would be more fun to drive, and it's still on the go 😁 good review again though 👍
Your old hilux would be horrible on the road uncomfortable gutless unrefined polluting dangerous with woeful brakes and steering very poor safety and probably shouldn't even be on the road 😄
I run a 62 plate 2 litre twin turbo version with no issue's. Ride is good, better than any other pick ups I have owned. Constant plus 30mpg around locally an nearer 40mpg, giving me a comfortable 750mile run to Scotland. Well pleased and don't see the need to upgrade to big engined versions. All VW Amaroks seem to be coming sort after as Ford Rangers are just to big and brash.
We're always interested in the cup holder situation. MOST important. And did you wear that top to match the colour of the pickup? Is this going to be a 'thing' now? Fascinating and very fair, as always, Matt.
I have no need for a pickup whatsoever but so want a V6 Amarok lol My neighbour has a black V6 which I have been in a few times and it is great, we took my garden waste to the tip, that would be all I would do with it!
Hi Matt I Looked at all these and test driven them and went for the ford wildtrack myself the amount of extras and weight it can pull and carry in the flat bed type was why I went for one , their are a few downsides like you need a step ladder to get in , so no good if your a umpa lumpa 🤪👍and rubbish cup holders , I do like the amorok but was a bit to car like as opposed to workhorse but still a nice truck , 🙏🙏👍 keep safe and all the best

Had the V6 on business lease for 3 years. Super strong residuals meant I got all my deposit back selling it back into local VW dealer. DPF failed but was faultless other that. Brilliant tow vehicle.
Good piece and informative but customers are staying away in droves which is why VW are collaborating for the next model. Theyre quite popular here in Australia, enough that theres a good selection of offroad mods. I’m still driving around in a (mildly lifted and modded) 2011 and its been pretty much faultless… and that includes several long outback trips and proper four wheel driving. Id only get rid of it to get a newer V6 model
Mmmmmmmmm, my first experiences with the Amarok was being driven from Rio Gallegos to Cabo Virgenes and back, sitting in the back. Not a great experience, apart from the team I was travelling with and the mate (local "tea") that was shared around. It is not very comfortable on the gravel roads but then again, it is not a Range Rover (mine was quite comfortable on the gravel :)). Note: they did have an issue with wheel studs breaking at some point. So worth checking if that is still an issue.

We have a 2016 Ford Ranger at work and I hate the thing. It is crude and uncomfortable to drive with bouncy suspension. It is hard work to load anything into the back of it because of the load floor height and limited space. It has 4 wheel drive but we have absolutely no need to go off road. The 4 wheel drive lacks a limited slip diff so it is hopeless on tarmac but we never need to go offroad anyway so all that extra hardware is essentially useless ballast. However, that problem is rather academic as the hire contract it is on, would you believe, actually forbids us from taking it off road.
Never been a fan of how pick ups drive but have only driven two. 1 Nissan nivana and Ford ranger. Nissan was some crappy base spec with a manual gearbox which I didn't like. The ranger Apple car play and Automatic gearbox which made the experience not soo bad
I used to drive with my hand on the gearstick constantly... then it snapped where it connected to the selector (was an E30 318is, so it was old, but still). Was enough of a pain in the arse that I stopped doing it
@@darrenquarterman2611 Oh same as the ranger, i use a ford ranger for biking so i can throw my bike in the back but changing it to a custom van as they are so much more practical and drive better then pick ups. Thanks 👍
Out of all the pick ups, this has gotta be my favourite. Especially that v6. My boss had a couple of them for work vehicles, I was trying to get 1, but gotta stick with my Vito. Can’t complain really.
when my l200 pick was nearly 3yrs old it had a recall i , when sat waiting for the recall to be completed, the service manager said we notice your side steps are slightly corroded bring the truck back tomorrow
and we will replace them F O C , unlike nic woods treatment , iv owned 3 mitsubishi`s sorry to see them pull out uk market as they all gave good service , rip cant see where a pickup especially in
auto mode more difficult to drive than a car for instance i don`t like front wheel drive cars but they are not difficult , how hard can it be
The last Amarok I saw, had just come back from a service.
That’s terrible. Good job they were ok
That vw Amorak is a cracking truck...ive driven many of these and they just make you realise just how good they are
Interesting review on a vehicle I'd never consider, but your narrative and similes are just a hoot! 👍
Thanks!
Just changed an add blue pump on one of these at work and my thoughts were the same, the later models really are much nicer.
We're always interested in the cup holder situation. MOST important.
And did you wear that top to match the colour of the pickup? Is this going to be a 'thing' now?
Fascinating and very fair, as always, Matt.
He’s starting to copy Tomas with the matching outfits. Next he’ll have one of those folding tape measure things.
Love those reviews! Seriously! I am going to subscribe. Thank you
Thank you!
Mythical wolf like creature. Thanks. New learnings occurred. Appreciated. That blue works so well.
Thank you! Cheers! Nice colour isnt it
@@HighPeakAutos it’s a Bobby Dazzler truck that. … something my dad would say but I’m kinda my dads age now born 77.
I have no need for a pickup whatsoever but so want a V6 Amarok lol
My neighbour has a black V6 which I have been in a few times and it is great, we took my garden waste to the tip, that would be all I would do with it!
Someone needs to do a one liners compilation 😂
Love the one liners
Thanks!
Hi Matt
I Looked at all these and test driven them and went for the ford wildtrack myself the amount of extras and weight it can pull and carry in the flat bed type was why I went for one , their are a few downsides like you need a step ladder to get in , so no good if your a umpa lumpa 🤪👍and rubbish cup holders , I do like the amorok but was a bit to car like as opposed to workhorse but still a nice truck , 🙏🙏👍 keep safe and all the best
If anyone needs a pick up truck for work, the Ford ranger from 2006-2011 is the best. Mine’s on 180k of hard farm and landscaping life and nothing has gone wrong. Can get a really nice late wild track for less than £10k and it’s the best money you’ll spend. Mine does about 20k miles a year and it’s never let me down
Nah
@@ln5747 okay
its a good pickup for hills and some snow but with out low range and locker its useless for something more than towing on roads.
You could spec a rear locker on these, to go along with the standard torsen centre diff, but virtually no one did.
It has rear diff lock. Low range isn’t needed they give everywhere
Bill Collins the vast majority don’t have a rear diff lock in the uk, but it was an option.
@@kristoffscuba5466 I didn’t know the spec was different over there? Can you buy v6 manual? Over here they have low range if manual and diff lock standard on all models
@@THEROADSMITH Yes we got the 6 speed manual V6, but its very, very, rare over here. I'm not sure if it has low range. I didn't think it did in the UK, but couldn't swear to it, I've never actually seen a v6 manual in person over here.
Great unbiased info. Regards AJ
This Amarok seems the kind of car that suits you the best!
youre my fav youtuber on cars! just want you to know :)
Thanks for letting me know 😉
Nice pick up only problem is vw for some reason won't fit rear airbags so bit of a problem if you have kids
Had the V6 on business lease for 3 years. Super strong residuals meant I got all my deposit back selling it back into local VW dealer. DPF failed but was faultless other that. Brilliant tow vehicle.
Just what I thought really
The only cure to the dpf and egr valve nightmares is to delete them and tune the engine.
That’s what I’ve done with my Isuzu dmax plus a remap, completely different vehicle and without the dpf egr worries.
Good piece and informative but customers are staying away in droves which is why VW are collaborating for the next model. I have had four Hilux and the whole world rate them for function and reliability .They may not have 8 speed auto or until recently apple car play . Afraid i would not trust the VW to be reliable -despite your great review.
The Hilux diesel has a serious issue with the DPF shitting itself. Bad design compounded by a bodge solution from Toyota.
Nice quality looking bit of kit, great video as always 👌
Thanks 👍
“It almost makes me feel like chopping down a tree, then wolf whistling at some girls at a bus stop, and then going and glassing somebody at a suburban pub with a flat roof” 😂😂😂
He forgot to mention the obligatory dog roaming round said flat roof!! 🤣
Another brilliant review 👏
Love these videos, still sore from missing out on the raffle think you need to give a little warning next time . Back to the video would be good to see this against the Toyota equivalence
Sat in the same Amarok last weekend during a driven hunt. 14,6 L/100km.... Those are Range Rover numbers... Comfortable enough. Love the video's Mat.
Rubbish
My brother has one says it’s a great vehicle, he’s says the only problem he has is parking it in car parks……says it’s just huge, but reckons it’s a really good drive.
Good evening Matt 👍
Hello! Hows it going?
@@HighPeakAutos Yeh all good mate. I have been watching a load of RUclips crap most of the evening, so it was nice when your download popped up and I could finally watch a friendly and knowledgeable face for once.
Thank you as always
I reckon every Amarok I've seen is in that same electric blue. I'd be interested to see a review of a newer generation Duster, Matt. I know you reviewed one a few years back now. I like these little videos.
Thanks. Will do
i have corris grey v6 amarok it always seems to look cleaner in comparison to other colours and it is a bit rarer.
I don’t think it’s that great looking and I would never have another VAG product.... ever. But a well informed video for me to compare my partner’s Deranged with.
Can you review a land cruiser 200 if you find one one day
Keep up the good work love it
When are we auditioning for Top Gear? Paddy an the cricket bloke need replacing. 😂 you should approach Amazon or Netflix with a car show concept I’d watch it. 😉
You guys need to see a Silverado. 8' bed, quad cab.
Looking forward to the new calendar, which month are you appearing in? Is Matt in March, using your handbrake to clutch 2 flat tyres and a broken exhaust pipe, thanks Matt your the greatest….
You should try my Bro-in-laws Dodge 5.9ltrs hemi. Smoth as silk, very comfortable, and BIG. But then he does live in Tupelo.
You need to come to the states. We have trucks for real. You’d love a GMC Sierra Denali.
Would be so interesting if you reviewed an American pickup. A Ram 1500 or Ford F-150! Think it’ll also get a lot of views
Never been a fan of how pick ups drive but have only driven two. 1 Nissan nivana and Ford ranger. Nissan was some crappy base spec with a manual gearbox which I didn't like. The ranger Apple car play and Automatic gearbox which made the experience not soo bad
Great video as always, keep it up 👍
Thanks! 👍
Lifestyle vehicle but pretty decent at that especially with a remap!
It beats every other Pick Up in a drag race on CarWoW.
I used to drive with my hand on the gearstick constantly... then it snapped where it connected to the selector (was an E30 318is, so it was old, but still). Was enough of a pain in the arse that I stopped doing it
Never actually seen a pickup truck with anything in the back in the UK. Aside from the old Toyota ones used by gardeners.
Their bad on fuel high maintenance compared to a van and can’t carry much I don’t see the point of them either
Lots of sheepdogs use them as taxis! Empty feed bags !
@@darrenquarterman2611 I think they are only good for towing big weights
@@UnderWarranty transit can tow 3.5 tons or custom 2.8 i think
@@darrenquarterman2611 Oh same as the ranger, i use a ford ranger for biking so i can throw my bike in the back but changing it to a custom van as they are so much more practical and drive better then pick ups. Off roading capability is handy in the ranger as you can find lots of places to park at bike trails.
Off topic. 12grand to spend on large estate heavy enough to tow caravan. Narrowed down to Eclass estate 5seriestouring or audi a6 avant thoughts Matt? Loving your work cheers
Interesting but will stick with an L200. VW prices/parts are stupid. Interesting comment on DPF. I cured mine by switching to Shell V Max for every fill...expensive but no more clogged DPF.
I do the same with my own cars
Just bought one to replace my recovery truck for collecting cars
A friend of mine has a top of the range Golf GTI 2021 model , it has spent more time in the garage than on his drive and less than 600 miles !!!
