The SLR was the car that got me into cars back when I was 12. So it'll always have a place in my heart.
You forget it's nearly 20 years old now yet it can still hold it's own. Quite a testament to both how good it was and how far cars have come in that space of time. But even when new, that gearbox was always its Achilles heel.
I wonder if you can take one back to McLaren and ask them to correct all its flaws.
I do Love the SLR but the old technology will never do it justice. Looks the best though for sure 🙌🏼

Fun fact: The SLR is now 17 years old, and still holds its own against two new cars with more torque, power, less weight and being RWD. That is impressive. The SLR, enzo and carrera GT were the greatest supercars made since the 2000s with no discussion
now this is what most people forget about the SLR, that its like a dinosaur compared to the other two and still can go toe to toe against them, I am a bit disappointed that Mat did not pointed this out, when it was head to head with the ferrari in the rolling race for like 2 secounds my tears started rolling down on my face

Every mercedes owner of the supercharged motor knows that the SLR had a bad intercooler pump...
That’s why the supercharger was disengaging.
Would have been nice to see what would happen if it was running properly.

It's almost shocking that an unloved 2+2 Ferrari, even its production had been ceased last year due to the undesirability, is faster than the legendary SLR.

Actually the g55 amg is the closest thing to the slr regarding the engine. The share the same engine and exhaust, but the engine is detuned in the g55 amg.
Well the G55K had almost the same engine- M113K vs M155K and side exit exhausts so not surprising
SLR Deserves A Dual Clutch Gearbox! 🔥
That SLR is an amazingly well built car. At track events overheating kicks in on many “big name” supercars. SLRs run the track all day without a problem and can do back to back 200MPH runs without breaking a sweat.
Here was clearly shown a limiter at 230 Kmh

But still the nicest of all 3 the enzo is so hyped(even though people hype the sls and amg gtr) but really fans know this older slr is faster om the straights the slr was hypercar of that time the sls is supercar of its own time.. I wonder why the mc12 is such a underrated car tje drag is way better than the enzo. Starting car fans dont know anything of really exotics car. The disco volante, the mc12, thema 8.32. There are so many nicer cars then a hyped enzo or laferrari. 599xx or the superamerica. People stare blind about magazine hyped cars.

Considering the SLR is 17(!) years old now it did absolutely amazing. I’ve driven SLR,s before and they are just incredible on a straight line. The torque is just instant.
17 years old with an awful automatic and no launch control. Fell in love with it the moment I saw it on Top Gear back in 2003, and the 722 made me fall deeper in love.

The Man yeah the limiter was probably a charge cooler issue. Essentially prevents damage to the supercharger... but yeah SLR’s are drag monsters

They’re not the cream of the crop super cars though, they’re half a second off the time of a bmw m8, which is literally a grand tourer. A cream of the crop would be things like the Ferrari F8, Lamborghini aventador SVJ, mclaren 720/765... and they would absolutely obliterate the SLR McLaren

B) define “supercar”?
Because a 992 911 Turbo S can out drag all 3 of cars you named in a standing 1/4 and yet isn’t considered “cream of the crop”
C) Tire technology has come a *comically* long way from the days of Enzo’s, SLR’s and Carrera GT’s... and if we threw modern tires on them and set them around a track the performance gap would drastically diminish.
My point stands, relative to todays super cars (cream of the crop or “baseline”) a SLR has no right being that fast
Matt, I think that the conventional 3rd run (i.e. most aggressive driving mode and specific gear) shouldn't be in a arbitrary gear. That run is about the very best that each car can do in a rolling start. That's would mean to me the gear with the best at-the-wheels torque, and that obviously could be different for each car.
That Mercedes SLR McLaren just is stunning, even to this day~~ It is an old car, but it was still impressive nonetheless~ Love the guy in the Ferrari, his energy was awesome, and I'm sure he's been in most of the other drag races too :)

The only thing that let's is down is the 5 speed auto! But it's just what it was back when it was new. And Mercedes was developing the 6.2 AMG V8 to replace the 5.4 one, which got a 7 speed gearbox.

B4 watching the clip, the SLR will still be struggling for traction as the others cross the line. I've actually driven one. The tech back then couldn't handle that power. It was completely unmanageable.

I think the Aston is pretty fast I just think the driver isn’t doing it justice
