  • Is Google open to a diverse array of viewpoints? Or is it an ideological echo chamber? Just ask former Google software engineer James Damore. He was fired for disagreeing with Google's (left-wing) orthodoxy. In this video, James shares his story.

    Script:
    I used to be a senior software engineer at Google. Until they fired me.
    For doing something unforgivable...
    Something so controversial that it was the number one news story for days.
    My crime: I wrote an internal document that, among other things, suggested that men and women, on average, are different.
    Like I told you: Unforgivable.
    The politically progressive viewpoint, which is dominant at Google and in the media, is that all disparities in society are due to injustices. Or, in this case, that the gender gap in tech is solely due to some form of sexism.
    But is this true?
    The politically correct answer is: yes. And Google acts accordingly. It treats men and women differently during hiring and promotion, holds official women-only events, and gives mandatory sensitivity training on how to combat alleged sexist bias.
    Of course, all of this makes sense if sexism is indeed the sole cause of the imbalance.
    But what if men and women are not exactly the same?
    Then, sexism is just one of many possible causes of the imbalance, and exclusionary programs and differential treatment can be a counterproductive form of sexism. These practices actually increase tensions and make some feel like Google cares more about their gender than their programming ability.
    As an engineer, when I’m faced with a problem, I want to solve it. So, I decided to research the premise: that men and women are exactly the same.
    I wrote my findings in a 10-page document titled, “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber.” You can read it online.
    What did I discover? That not all of the male-female disparity in tech may be the result of sexism.That at least some of it may be attributed to men and women having different goals for their careers and their lives.
    To cite just two examples:
    In the study, ”Women, Careers, and Work-Life Preferences,” published in the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling, the study’s authors conclude that women across populations tend to look for more work-life balance, while men tend to have a higher drive for status.
    And according to a study by Cal State Fullerton psychologist Richard Lippa, men, on average, tend to be more interested in things, while women tend to be more interested in people.
    These findings have been replicated many times. They’ve actually been cited by other researchers as a cause for the gender gap in tech.
    In other words, I didn’t make this stuff up.
    In fact, after my document came under attack, evolutionary psychologist Geoffrey Miller said its “empirical claims are scientifically accurate.”
    But Google disagreed. Like…really disagreed.
    First, the company’s newly appointed VP of Diversity, Integrity, and Governance, Danielle Brown, posted a memo that said my report “advanced incorrect assumptions about gender.”
    Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, sent a memo to all employees saying that I “cross[ed] the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes.” This was, he added, “not O.K.”
    Then, he fired me.

      Google isn't shutting anyone up. You have a right to free speech. You don't have a right to make money off of said speech.
      PragerU's videos are still being shown. Being demonetized doesn't mean people can't see them. PragerU just can't make money off of it.

    • @amykelley666
      @amykelley666 6 лет назад

      Jeffrey Grimm: Actually, TYT has had videos put on restricted and demonetized. So has Kyle Kulinski from Secular Talk, and many other leftist youtubers. All google has to do to disprove PragerU's claims is show that they've also demonetized videos from leftists(which I know HAS happened because I also watch leftist youtube channels), and PragerU doesn't have a leg to stand on
      Anyways, what does restricted mode mean exactly? Doesn't it mean it prevents users who are under 18 from watching it? I don't see why that's preventing free speech. If you consider that preventing free speech then parental controls also prevent free speech under your logic.
      And if you think parental controls prevent free speech, I won't argue against that, but now my point becomes this: These things are done by individuals. Individuals and private companies don't have to respect free speech laws anyways(only the government does), unless there is a specific free speech law that applies to companies, which I don't know of one that exists. If one does exist, then PragerU would have a point here, but I don't think it does.

This has ceased to be a social discussion and instead is a political one.

      That is just the snake oil pundits sell you. There is spectrum of opinions, not collective one. The left is as much collective of SJWs as "the right" is just gun toting homophobes. Some people wish Twitch would open a video uploading service since Twitch is well known for caring about their community.

      Except diversity makes teams happier/more productive (all members regardless of background) and brings in different viewpoints. Protip in the future, when you apply for anything, they're not looking to put people onto a single scale and rate them on some imaginary one-dimensional merit, they're looking for team members, and a diversity of backgrounds and experiences is 100% important to that. It's not PC, it's good business sense. So yeah, any large company should be (and is) looking to diversify their hires as much as possible.

    • @VueiyVisarelli
      @VueiyVisarelli 6 лет назад +10

      Angel nailed it. What Umbrall said is only good when it's diversity of _thought_ that we're talking about. Yes, different ideas, opinions, and viewpoints are helpful, and sometimes that is in part fueled by people having different socio-economic backgrounds and the like, but merely looking at skin color or gender is quite clearly missing the point. They had some diversity of thought (and it sounds like lots of good ideas) with Mr. Damore...but they fired him _for_ it. It's hard to believe, but I wonder if Google, an _internet-based company,_ forgot that the _internet_ exists, and that this would eventually get out...and make them look like the hypocrites they are.

    • @endorbr
      @endorbr 6 лет назад +5

      Diversity of thought is great. That's how you get new ideas and avoid stagnation. Relevant to business, diversity of thought is derived from experience and education, certifications and training. It has little if anything to do with how much melanin someone has, what country they're from, or whether or not their genitals dangle. Too many businesses simply look to hire more women, more minorities, more people with disabilities... because the checkbox they're looking to fill has everything to do with image, which creates diversity of people but not necessarily a diversity of thought.

    Essentially, if you have a different viewpoint than the one that's being echoed in the "echo chamber," you are immediately shamed and punished for dissenting from the status quo, which should be seen as absolutely ludicrous in a society like ours where diversity and differing viewpoints are a central tennant. He even states in his article that his "larger point is that we have an intolerance for ideas and evidence that don’t fit a certain ideology," like his paper. Yet when he goes against the status quo (he barely went against Google's ideology imo, his simply pointed out its flaws and gave reccomendations on how to fix them) he is fired! Absolute madness.

      Ironically, Prager does the same to the Alt-Right by falsely accusing them as white supremacists and racists. People on the Alt-Right are being maligned all the time by the media and society, but Prager says nothing until he personally has been lumped in with them. There's nothing noble about Prager having James Damore on his channel, because his motive is based on fear for his business. Conservatives are virtue signaling to the media and to the left that those bad racists called the Alt-Right are really the bad guys. It ain't going to work, because the Alt-Right knows the future is identity politics. The future of the right is the Alt-Right and conservatives are finding that out one by one.

    The funniest thing about this is that having men and women be biologically driven towards different goals and interests is fundamentally good. Not because this puts men in the natural status of breadwinner and women in the natural status as homemaker, but that men and women can make up for each other's failings while sharing in their counterpart's natural successes. If men are on average more interested in things and women on average more interested in people, maybe as a group they can come together to make a program or product that can be both internally efficient and outwardly user-friendly rather than just one or the other. Biological differences do not make genders separate castes, but they are nature's way of making sure that humanity always has two hands on the steering wheel and doesn't end up in an echo chamber of its own.
    In a society where men are forced to think like women and women forced to think like men, everyone loses. Let people do what interests them - whether that makes them apart of the average or an outlier - and stop yelling at them for being who they naturally are.

      I'm not disagreeing with you, but your argument won't convince anyone who already thinks like that. The reason being is that they would be offended by your assumption that men and women NEED each other to make up for the others' failings. Because that would imply women have failings that men need to rescue them from.

    • @jacob00bell
      @jacob00bell 6 лет назад +3

      Evan Huizenga too true. They would view this as a statement that says "women need men to save them" when the argument CLEARLY STATES THAT MEN EQUALLY NEED WOMEN TO SAVE THEM. We all have deficiencies, and only a fool believes that we can be all perfectly balanced and fulfilled in this life without help from each other.
      This hyper focus on individualism in gender roles and equality is killing the family unit. It drives men and women further apart and weakens them, but claims to empower them both.
      The irony physically pains me.

      Orppranator We're not talking about war, we're talking about the workplace. It is true that men have an increase in hormones that lead to muscle growth, but this never meant that women did not participate in manual labor. In most societies that are truly fighting for survival, you want every able bodied worker doing their part to contribute. All sheltering women from the workplace does is create a culture unprepared for harsh realities. Should we send most women to war? Probably not. Should they be earning their keep in society? At all times.

But coming up with things like "hurr durr that means women should be given different roles because I 'studied' that", which he did, is another thing and it's pretty blatantly inflammatory. I wouldn't be surprised if he asked them to be interviewed, not the other way around. Never underestimate how much idiocy humans are capable of just to feel recognized.

      To be fair, he was making a _lot_ of assumptions about his specific environment. He may have been right, but regardless of his correctness or intent, he went against Google's policies and jumped to a lot of conclusions about how other employees (male or female) feel.
      He approached the situation wrong and as a result, it should've been no surprise that he got fired. I'm not saying he should have been, but at the same time, his argument (at least based on this video) is incomplete.

    In his letter, Mr. DaMore was right to point out that women are generally more interested in people while men are interested in things. Even the women at google proved him right by complaining to HR and taking several days off to work out their emotions shortly after the "incident."
    You'd think that many women would be interested in acquiring a firearm to feel safer and more empowered in a world where they believe any man can rape them at the drop of a hat.That is not the case though. Most gun tutorial videos are made by men and I personally love to find the ones where women are the ones doing the reviewing and the shooting. They know the technical specs and take initiative to empower themselves instead of giving more power to the government.
    THESE are the rare cases where women take interest in things. These also happen to be non-leftist women who actually command respect and admiration much like Ms. Dana Loesch. This is in stark contrast to the RUclips CEO who liberally uses terms like Mansplaining and Microagressions.
    One of these two generally looses the public's respect very fast every time she opens her mouth.

      The whole "women are generally more interested in people while men are interested in things" was taken from a British study. I'd say that America does not work the same way. I have an innate ability to read anyone and I will say that with all of the women I've encountered in my life time... it is not true at all. Women tend to even be more selfish. Do we think it is a coincidence that it is so easy for women to manipulate men? Women are not as nice as they were back in the day and connections are really only about getting ahead or having someone around who has something you do not and can learn from. In most cases, women do not even realize that it is a thing, but it is always present in a female group dynamic. Trust me, there are just as many female duds as there are male ones, but I kind of appreciate being underestimated by the majority of men. It makes it easier to win.
      I could care less about most people and this manifesto for that matter. I find it more intriguing how everyone responds to it. I think it is utterly ridiculous that everyone calls him 'smart' when he was legitimately stupid enough to write something that would obviously get him fired. At the very least, it makes him clueless. Anyone who truly knows people will tell you that men are far more predictable. In all honesty, I don't even like people until they display some sort of common sense (which is rare in our society if this whole situation is any indication of it). Safe this... respect that... No one is ever truly safe and with the majority of cases where a weapon is taken from the victim and used against them, I would test my luck with just gouging out an eye or ripping out the carotid artery.

      I always thought the main difference lied in the types of objects. For instance, men being really into cars, while women are really into shoes and jewelry. I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say women are more interested in people when, at the same time, women are known to be less confrontational and less likely to initiate the conversation compared to a man. Also as the person pointed out earlier, British and American culture are fairly different from each other.

    My workplace forced me to sit through sensitivity training, where the definition of sexism was listed as by a man against a woman. Sexual harassment was similarly defined as being by a man and against a woman. It was specifically stated that he neither case can the men be the victims. Meanwhile I have seen several good candidates refused promotions and candidly told that the reason was because they were male, and that the person was required to hire a woman instead. But somehow that's not sexist!

    To all the people commenting that gender differences are indeed simply the result of stereotypes and roles pushed on us from an early age, how do you explain the fact that, in virtually all sexually dimorphic species, there are significant behavioural differences between the male and the female of the species? I'm genuinely interested to know, because I've never heard anyone of the "gender is a social construct" mindset attempt to give a rational explanation for that. And if there's no evidence that women are more suited to being the primary caregivers for children, then why can't men breastfeed? I don't doubt that society does influence the way we behave, but I think this is a secondary factor, the primary factor being directly measurable biological differences. Science has proved time and again how much our behaviour is influenced by hormones; for example, men tend to be more aggressive than women as a result of higher testosterone levels. Furthermore, brain scans have shown that the brains of men and women are wired differently, and we therefore think differently. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but they are just that: exceptions. Who actually benefits from this aggressive denial of reality? We're different for a reason, and our differences are supposed to complement each other. Instead it's turned into a competition, and society is becoming progressively sicker as a result.

    • @rinnypoo__7958
      @rinnypoo__7958 6 лет назад +4

      I’m no biology major or anything so take what I have to say as an opinion and I’m not trying to present it as fact but I think that women are biologically here to create offspring and men are biologically here to protect the offspring they create. In nature this is great but nowadays our main goal isn’t to pass on our genes. I believe that women are pressured into fulfilling their biological needs while men aren’t. Women are pressured to have children and raise a family. However, men don’t seem to be pressured to take care of their family. Instead they’re pressured to make money and be successful which will give their families the money to obtain resources to survive, but men don’t need a family to take care of. This causes people to be assigned to “boxes” that tell them what their future will be like. Honestly I don’t think it’s possible to know if these boxes are legitimate and valid at all. Perhaps men and women really are different. But in this day and age our main goal in life is not to pass on our genetics, it’s to be happy. Why should we be assigning people to these boxes and saying that “a family will make you happy” or “money and success will make you happy” when we don’t necessarily know that that is true. I think that if there are biological differences between men and women then they don’t seem to be terribly significant. Therefore, I think we should try to dissolve these expectations based on gender. It’s reasonable to assume that plenty of women would be happiest with money and success and plenty of men would be happy with a family. My biggest problem with this video is probably that they showed a women’s goal as being a house with a white picket fence and the men’s goal as sitting behind a desk. It kind of implies that women couldn’t survive without men, but men could easily survive without women. It makes women look useless and only good for taking care of the family. This leads to a negative stereotype that will cause a lot of people to follow a path that won’t make them happy. I don’t think that holding meetings for women only is gonna do anything about it but also consider that those meetings could be( though I admit probably aren’t) about things that only affect women. Like what brand of tampons to put in the tampon dispensers. Or how much maternity leave is necessary. If women only meetings really were about those issues then it would really suck for men (who have no idea how much time you need to recover from labor or what kind of tampon doesn’t damage your vagina) to be the ones finding solutions to these issues.

      kkkacid I think your right about todays mindsets and and really not needing to check a box to be happy. But that's only on the surface because as you pointed out the biology deep down says different in both men and women. Being free from the box is liberating. But can it last forever ?

    TRUE STORY: I was at a shopping mall with a friend and her son and daughter. We went into a candy store and noticed they had chocolate lollipops shaped like cute animals. My friend and her daughter said, “Oh, how adorable.” My friend’s son walked over and said, “Yum, chocolate.”
    I realized, this was an EXCELLENT example of the differences in the sexes. The girls saw cute cuddly animals and the boy looked at it and only saw chocolate.

      The Evergreen State College in Olympia made the same change in 2017. Now, instead of hiring a brilliant chemist to teach a chemistry class (for example), they will only hire a chemistry theorist who will have to prove that they "dedicated their career to fostering equity", according to their new Equity Model. So, unlike when I was attending Evergreen, professors won't be hired and graded for their excellence in their particular fields, but by how much effort they've put into 'equity'. Other universities are doing the exact same thing, which should terrify all of us, because our kids are being taught by people who are thoroughly unqualified to teach. I swear, everytime I see "Evergreen" on my resume, I feel compelled to delete it and write in a different college altogether, lol.
