Hope you guys enjoy this rare look at this forgotten gem! This has been a long time coming as it has taken about a year of on and off research to get this game running. Never before have I personally hyped up a game so much. Even though I can't fully play it yet, the real Japanese cars, wicked courses, fast gameplay and energetic personality have already shown me that this is a match made in heaven. If there were any games that were top-notch predecessors to the Initial D Arcade Stage series, Racing Jam and Racing Jam Chapter II are it. Let me know your thoughts on the game in the comments! Time codes and loads of other info on the game is in the description.
Vikrinox Nah, I've spent under $150 for the whole setup. Many arcade boards can go for several hundred or even over a thousand dollars, but sometimes with games as forgotten as this one, the demand isn't really there.
Vikrinox Anyone who is serious about arcade collecting will usually have a KLOV account, so the website gives an idea of which collectors own which games, but it generally isn't an indication of a game's rarity. There could still be hundreds of Racing Jam machines still in arcades, we just don't know, but considering its age and the deal with the suicide battery, there's probably not a lot. Arcade machines and boards don't always cost as much as some people think, I traded an Xbox 360 for my Asteroids machine a couple years ago.
Vikrinox I see, yep arcades in America are few and far between as well. A former shell of what they used to be. I like a good hardware boot up as well, you can literally see the components of the PCB that are being checked. I think it's a lot less interesting if a game boots up immediately.
Wow! This is the game that I could remember so much from my childhood years. Thanks a lot Vectrex for this video! I played that game (Racing Jam Chapter II) back in 2008 - 2013 (I think?), in WalterMart Dasmariñas, Cavite, Philippines; spending some arcade quarters (not real curency - aka Philippine Peso) to the game in which I am fan of nostalgic driving games (esp. 3D games at that time). I always played the Beginner A race track (BANK) and chose random car(s), just for elegantly fun (not even a pro chance, lol). Then after those years, the arcade management pulled over that game - due to possible "spare parts" issue (or other matters), and I was so sad as well. Man, if they (Konami) could port into the PC version (Windows) and on Sega Dreamcast, plus maybe on PlayStation 2 + Nintendo GameCube in the first place, then I would be very happy (and might get addicted as well, if they could also add the "Local Play" or even "LAN / Internet Play" on Multiplayer mode, because why not?) to see and play this game for good! Can't wait to play this game again, once I found it soon (esp. in Japan or other countries - if there's any chance)! More info: •I recently discovered the Japanese flyer of Thrill Drive (1998) just now, and this is the link: maedahiroyuki.com/20200113-%E3%82%B9%E3%83%AA%E3%83%AB%E3%83%89%E3%83%A9%E3%82%A4%E3%83%96/ •On the technical software side - both Racing Jam and RJ: Chapter II ran on *fully 60fps (frames per second)* , while Thrill Drive is only at *30fps (or likely in 32fps)* ala Midnight Run: Road Fighters 2 - Winding Heat tandem & GTI Club. •Also, *the official soundtrack of Thrill Drive (1998), is out here: (Please check it out!)* ruclips.net/video/W4ptvErLW54/видео.html (Over 10k views!) •Right now, I spend playing on Thrill Drive on older MAME versions (esp. on 0.147 / 0.148) due to compatibility (faster emulation speed up to normal). Remember, the newer version of MAME, it's getting worse than what you expect (and might crash the emulator). Also, there's this weird issue that I cannot select countries, only Japan - unless you're playing with "enable mouse input" (but yeah, the problem still exists because at some point, it causes to turn left or right randomly or for worse). •Lastly, the JAE version of Thrill Drive (the only working one so far, the JAB and the European EAA had "Hardware Error (-11N)" issue) is the *Deluxe version* (which has 5 + Reverse gear shifts).
That kill switch really makes sense.. and gives me closure to one of the best multiplayer racing games in the 2000s. This game was MAJOR in Hawaii, almost all major arcades had a cabinet. But the main arcade franchise "fun factory" had that big screen cockpit. The pearlridge location on Oahu had 6 of those fuckers lined up at the front of the entrance. It was a great time. One of the best things about this game was being able to gain speed. And drift/clip opponents and make them spin out. 😅😅
This takes me back to Junior High School days. Used to play this a lot along with Battle Gear 3. Unfortunately as the arcade there closed nowadays the game is also gone. It's basically a once-in-a-lifetime experience haha. The game does have banger soundtracks as well.
Loved this game. One of few arcade racers that had an actual H pattern shifter and clutch pedal. Racing Jam, Ridge Racer, Ferrari Challenge, and Race Drivin to my knowledge.
Lots of games have an H gate shifter. What is rare are the ones that have more than 4 gears and a clutch. The San Francisco series has a clutch, and a version of Battle Gear 4 has a 6 speed shifter and a clutch.
You sir are a legend for the setup alone. I've only had the pleasure of playing Racing Jam once, but it left such a great impression that I often think about it to this day. Which is why am here watching the video. Thank you!
25:47 "Alright, let's see how i'm gonna move this car" 25:56 "Good, 3° gear but i need the firts one" 26:00 "Maybe this one? nope, it doesn't work" 26:03 "FU#% THIS SH#%!!!!"
God I hope this channel isn't dead... I really wanna see you figure out this game. You got me into going down to my local arcade to start hitting the initial d cabinet, which I probably would never have picked up otherwise. You would think I would be tired of driving (and the eurobeat) after my delivery job, but you introduced me to a game I'm actually in love with, (that's been rare for me this time of my life) and I can't get over how high the skill ceiling is. Best of luck to you my man!
Ah, thanks! Arcade Stage is truly one of the best racing game series. The channel isn't dead. I've been working on an hour long, heavily edited eurobeat mix. I'll get back to Chapter II by making a full playthrough of it. I actually got a fully working board set for the original Cobra version of Racing Jam. It's even better than Chapter II and I'd call it the greatest forgotten arcade racer of all time, so it has priority over it. Those playthroughs will be coming after the eurobeat mix is done, because I feel I should return with a big video. In the meantime, follow me on Twitter @Vectrex4Life for video updates.
@@Vectrex4Life hey, so I just realized the initial d arcade cabinet I go to has a borked wheel. I was wondering if you have any recommendations for a wheel and pedals, thinking I may as well just emulate it on my pc at this point.
@@shaneme3 Hey, sorry for the late reply. My best PC wheel is a Logitech G25 and I like it but I can't properly mount it to my desk so I haven't really ever had a good PC wheel setup.
@@Vectrex4Life feels bad man, I just found out this weekend my roommate had a race wheel this entire time. Mounted it to a fold up desk in front of the 55" TV and got ID6 on technoparrot. It's an amazing setup, but I still think I'm jealous of your actual cabinet because nothing can move around on that thing :p
Damn, you don't get games like this anymore! RACING JAM looked far superior than other racing games at the time in my opinion. I wish there was more footage of the COBRA version other than a teaser shown in ASI 1997. That looked like a complete beast compared to the NWK-TR version in terms of hardware! Hope you'll find more rare arcade games like this in the future.
Hillustration No problem! I'd love to get my hands on the prequel. It actually had 4 variations of Gymkhana and the ability to custom your car's performance (only for Gymkhana it seems), but I guess it was unpopular so it wasn't included in Chapter II. Both games seem to be identical visual wise, they just have different courses.
Speaking of games that doesn't work on MAME, have you heard of the racing game Thrill Drive? Its a racing game that prompts you to drive carefully while trying to finish a race. Cause' if you do crash, its realistic as it is horrifying (for its time). First time I crashed, shock of my adolescent life. I actually played Thrill Drive 2 and I think like Racing Jam was an update to the original. My god the memories of that game stuck with me, its like when its a Burnout game that treats its crashes as horrifying consequences instead of awesome spectacles of flying metal.
Oh yes, and I think it's pretty good. Thrill Drive actually does work in MAME, despite being on the same NWK-TR hardware that Racing Jam 1 and Chapter II run on. It is possible to convert a Chapter II PCB set into a Thrill Drive so maybe I'll look into that sometime.
Was this the game that had a screaming woman and broken windscreen as the artwork on the side? If so then I've seen only one machine and that'll have been like 16 years ago.
Thrill Drive is cool. I currently have a video on the Japan course, but I plan on doing it again because of the newer MAME versions, along with the USA and Europe courses.
I bet Racing Jam Chapter II plus Eurobeat would be cool. And it’s sick how you tracked down the machine and got it working. Really looking forward to anything else you make about this.
Thanks! That's a cool idea, and it would work because there's an option to turn off the music in the test menu. Maybe I'll have to include eurobeat in a race or two when I make the full playthrough video.
I'm terrible at giving accurate time estimates so....sometime. I have a few working scripts for heavily edited videos that are similar in style to Forgotten Games. WTF Craigslist Ads 5 being one of them.
Spatializer 3D Stereo, developing company, who work with Konami, not only they work with the Racing Jam franchise, but also, they made a Gradius spin-off game with 3D element concept like starfox named Solar Assault. They where 2 versions of the game, a Japanese only version named Solar Assault Gradius, featuring 5 stages, while there is a 2nd revision titled Solar Assault Revised, features 6 stages, 1+ extra stages, and the last stage was length with an additional boss, it also features some graphic fixes in some stages, and bosses. Meanwhile the US version, we had the Revised version (with the extras I mentioned) under the title simply as Solar Assault. Amazing for SPATIALIZER 3D STEREO company, for the ideas 😎😎😎 However, just like Racing Jam, Solar Assault, also had multiple technical work with this, as the MAME emulation community, struggled to get this to work, now is playabke, but with some slight bugs, depending with what MAME emulation are you playing with.
Oh my god I Finally found it!!! After YEARS OF SEARCHING!!! *Cries* Thank you you beautiful person!! I remember dumping all of my quarters into this game at Chuck e Cheese when i was younger. For god sake's I even learned how to drive manual on this thing. Hahha~ I remember it had everything that worked. Clutch.. full 5 speed manual.. and even a working hand brake right behind the shifter in a real car position. I remember this game being way ahead of its time in terms of how a setup was. Haven't seen a arcade game with a detailed layout like that since. :( And I've been looking for it ever since. Game was so fun.. I remember they had a contest and the winner got to pick one of these systems or any one game system out of their establishment for their own. I got 3rd. So I didn't get it... but I wanted to win so badly to get that setup!
Vert344 That's awesome, thanks for sharing, so glad you found it! You're right, no other game had the same set of controls, it was something entirely new. I think the Racing Jam series are the best forgotten racing games ever. I will be making a full playthrough of the game soon once I complete the setup on my Initial D machine. (Follow me on Twitter for photos)
Holy shit. I've been looking for the name of this game for ages. The last time I've played this was back when I was 8 and it only appeared in one arcade in one specific mall here. Thanks for giving me some childhood flashbacks.
Issues with this game on mame: Car textures are not right, proably due to the konami 2d chips not figured out. The textures are random every time the game boots up. Ex: The skyline with a finish flag texture. Slow, proably due to SHARC emulation. Game freezes, like some other konami 3d games. (Winding heat, fighting bujtsu, thrill drive, teraburst) Sound hardware emulation is not perfect. Cobra version did a gfx test, then crashes.
Hi vetrex i just want to tell you are my favorite youtuber and my first vid i saw of you was one of the lego racers vids also hpw much was that arcade system and how does it work like how do you sort put the games and how do you know which is which
Thanks, I paid just over $100 for the PCB set. I didn't wanna get too technical with the setup, it's really just a matter of studying the wiring diagrams in the manuals and stripping wires.
No problem, glad you found this video! Beginner B is actually a slight twist on the Beginner B course that was in Racing Jam 1. That version was pretty much a tight figure 8, where as this one has more corners. There are a few very low quality videos that show it. My board set is being preserved at the moment by another enthusiast, but once I get it back, I'll make a full playthrough of the game. Believe me, I'm looking forward to it myself.
such a shame that this was our only opportunity. along with a few other unplayable games unless with the real hardware like Wangan midnight (Just Maximum Tune 1 and 2), Ollie king and road burners. (some of these games need its very own emulation that isn't MAME at all.) but other than that those memories of playing this game in 1999 was awesome, it also had some music that i remember too but sadly forgotten.
We'll get there eventually. I have no idea about Chihiro emulation, though I know you can play some of the games on a real Xbox, including Ollie King. I defintely wanna get the real hardware someday. What I'm still baffled by is the fact that the Racing Jam games were arcade exclusives that have suicide batteries, on top of poor sales. There's probably only a handful of machines that are still on location. Aside from the suicide battery, Konami boards from this era aren't exactly bulletproof, so MAME or similar emulation is the only long term solution.
Differences between racing jam 1 and 2. (̶N̶o̶t̶ ̶c̶o̶u̶n̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶C̶o̶b̶r̶a̶ ̶v̶e̶r̶s̶i̶o̶n̶)̶ seems that the cobra version has some hidden differences. Obviously gymkhana courses were removed, getting rid of it's gran turismo tuning qualities. new music is added to chapter ll, replacing the vocal tracks. i like racing jam 1's music. (P.S the music in cross roads is the same music in hillclimb in the original). Some courses ( other than gymkhana) are modified or removed entirely. Racing Jam has more emphasis on the clutch than Ch.ll Chapter 2 includes 3 new secret cars. In the sound test, dont stop the music is the music that plays in the volume setting. Chapter 2 has the bank melody as the volume setting music. Game over screens are different. Course pics are different. Interface is different. When you gain a place in chapter 2, it makes a slot machine like sound. Unlicensed opponent cars (seen in the attract mode spinning out) dont appear in original racing jam. Update, chapter 2's attract music is a remix of the original. Overall, chapter 2 is more wacky compared to the original. cobra version has unique music for the open road gymkhana section. NWK-TR removes this track and replaces it with the regular gymkhana music due to ROM chip limitations. cobra version has options in the test menu to check the boot sectors. due to it having a hard drive. cobra version has a sound dram option in it's test menu. gymkhana's skybox in cobra version is different than the nwk-tr version. cobra's test menu font looks like thrill drive's test menu font. Cobra version renders everything in quads, while nwk tr renders in triangles sound channels are handled differently on the cobra (2 channels for sound effects, 2 channels for music) while nwk-tr has the channels mixed together. And also, that weird flickering is proably caused by the failing custom konami 2d chips. Thanks for reading this comment. It means alot to me.
I find it impressive that you know this much about them. Do you have a machine or the PCB sets for these games or did you play them back then? I actually now have the Cobra version and it has superior graphics (though not by a lot), better sound and maybe better physics. Other than that, the games are basically the same, with the same courses, hence why both are just called Racing Jam. All 3 games have a hidden Nissan Stagea Wagon that can be unlocked if you hold the brake over the Skyline GT-R. I definitely think the original Cobra version is the best of the 3 as I see Chapter II as more of an "expansion pack" rather than a fully fledged sequel. The winding road course is the same and the circuit night course is a slight variation, so Chapter II basically has 2 and a half new courses. If I get the ROMs for Racing Jam NWK-TR, I'll have all 3.
@@Vectrex4Life i didnt know that theres a secret car in the original. Best of luck for finding racing jam nwk tr version. And no, i do not own any version sadly, i would like to find the cobra version though. The problem is the battery and the hard drive. If the battery dies, then the board is useless. I the hard drive fails, then you're stuck with a dead board. (P.S, Can the Cobra version use a compact flash card for storage? Just wondering.)
@@Jack-fe6vv Thanks. The thing is, I bought the Cobra with a dead battery. I sent it to a fellow enthusiast who grabbed the data from MAME, installed a socket on the board and made the battery changeable. I have the original hard drive and it's still working fine. You can use compact flash, but I haven't tried it. If the hard drive dies, I can just pull the data from MAME and put it on something. Aside from the hard drive and suicide battery, the Cobra is very power hungry and is unreliable to begin with. There's 6 boards in total and it was expensive, over-engineered and wasn't nearly as successful as Sega's Model 3. (Scud Race/Super GT in particular) My board set has several, very intricate repairs done to it. Whoever did them definitely knew what they were doing.
@@Vectrex4Life yeah, the cobra was expensive as hell, and your right. It was over engineered. I think it is a hornet board that replaced the PPC 403GA with a 603e, the 68000 replaced with a PPC 403GA, the SHARC replaced with a PPC 604. and 3dfx hardware replaced with a ibm custom graphics chipset. (Proably based of the GXP2000P opengl accelerator.) What you get is an inefficient system. And P.S, is the attract mode different than the nwk tr version? And fun fact, the 604 can support multiple CPU's, so it's use isn't very surprising.
@@Jack-fe6vv I see. Honestly I'm impressed that the NWK-TR version isn't that big of a graphical downgrade. Visually, the attract mode seems to be identical, other than the 1997 copyright year.
This is awesome, Lucky you for getting a hold of this PCB! For some reason, there seems to be a lot of really nice looking Konami racing games that are still unemulated to this day, such as Over Drive or Racing Force. The strange thing about those is that Over Drive is the only game running on Xexex hardware that doesn't work, and Racing Force is one of two games that run on Konami's System GX hardware that doesn't work. Perhaps sometime in the future you might get a chance to look at those.
ColonelSandwich Thanks, yeah I know about those two. I actually came pretty close to buying a tested and working Racin' Force board set on eBay for under $30 total, but the wiring for the analog controls stopped me, as I'd probably need the wiring harness to control it. But yeah, Konami has a ton of great forgotten racers, GTI Club, Winding Heat and others. I think Midnight Run 2 is pretty good but there's still flashing every few seconds in MAME which is strange.
CursedChad I do as well. The only ones I think that have one is the San Francisco Rush series, F355 Challenge, Battle Gear 4, and a variation of the original Ridge Racer. The original Racing Jam had 4 Gymkhana courses as well as lots of tuning options, so it totally made sense to have one. Chapter II removed the Gymkhana courses and the tuning, though I think they just kept the clutch and H-gate shifting for the sake of being easy to upgrade the game in the same machine.
Hey man if you get this message could you please give me some links to the manuals you have for this game? Mine is coming up with a error on the display on the board and isn't outputting any video, but I don't know what the error means without the manual. Do you know if the game will boot up to the self test with just one video board installed? I have 6 of them and that will make it easier to find working ones if it does.
Bammer2001 I do have a couple of gameplay clips on my Twitter, @Vectrex4Life . Once I have all the controls wired up, I'll make a properly recorded full playthrough similar to how I made the Sunset Riders one.
I remember there being an arcade racing game that played replays when ever you crashed with this somewhat dramatic music. It was kinda like in Stunt Driver for DoS, but this was a much more traditional arcade racing game. For years I've been trying to figure out what game it was. It appeared in arcades somewhere between 1997 and 1998, possibly 1999 but I highly doubt that one.
DjannoBin - Free Music Actually, it's not. I've played it in MAME and you can find numerous videos of it on the RUclipss. So it makes me wonder what's the real reason why either Racing Jam has yet to be emulated correctly.
Really? I'll try it as soon as I can. And yeah, really odd; same hardware yet only one playable with the same emulator... I hope i'll get to play this gem someday
This game and the original are quite rare. I'm not aware of any machines that are still on location. Even in Japan, some arcades have several Konami racing games, but no Racing Jam.
Pretty good for a game running on 3dfx voodoo hardware, proably why this is because of the SHARC doing all the T&L. Much like the PPC 604 on the Cobra version.
Wow, I’m surprised to see that this game even has station wagons in its roster. Particularly the Gen 1 Impreza and Legacy GT/B. I mean these days station wagons are largely absent from racing games I just don’t think they get the love they deserve.
I hate when companies kill games, but i always thought that the issue was mostly reserved to games that require an internet connection. This just shows me how many games we probably can't play anymore because of a stupid kill-switch the devs probably included so they could sell replacement cabinets. Just imagine working hard on a game just so nobody will be able to play it in a few years. I hope somebody finds out how to emulate this game, since it looks awesome.
And the whole kill switch practice should just stop in general, too many people get ripped off by printers with predetermined shelf expectancy, and other stuff like that. I get that companies want to sell products, but this goes against the consumer, i'm stunned that this isn't forbidden by law or something.
Any chance you could rip the music from the sound test menu? They released the OST in a rare Konami music album years ago but nobody got their hands on it and uploaded it yet
@@St_Rizla I don't need the hard drive to upload the soundtrack since it's already ripped. I'll try to upload it soon, I just haven't quite decided how I'll go about doing the video portion.
Oh, I actually have faint memories of this game. Sadly, it was one of those games I just spent up to 3 games to try it and never thought about it afterwards. But it was indeed fun like the same level as Daytona USA. And like Daytona, I wasn't perfect at them but fun nonetheless.
Vectrex4Life Asia. It was early 2000s. Back when arcade games didn't have progress saving gimmicks and was all about getting initials on a scoreboard (and I never got any :p).
WTF Craigslist Ads 5 will be the next major video from me, then it's back to Forgotten Games. These arcade and eurobeat videos are not replacements for the heavily edited content.
PttyBlue43 I believe the 3 hidden cars are unlockable by holding the foot brake on the selection screen. Same sort of thing to unlock the time trial and mirror modes.
Racing Jam was supposed to actually run on more powerful hardware than this board; maybe Cobra, or likely something more powerful. I remember watching a video of the original Racing Jam demo supposedly running on the hardware and it looked much closer to, even arguably better than Scud Race on Model 3.
ETM316 Hey, it turns out that Racing Jam 1 DOES run on the Cobra hardware. I recently bought the PCB set. I've been told it doesn't work, I'm waiting on a power supply setup to test it but I'm really happy to own it regardless. It seems that the Cobra hardware was so expensive and so unreliable that Racing Jam was ported to the much cheaper NWK-TR under the same name. It featured different courses, but was definitely graphically inferior. Despite giving the Model 3 a run for its money, I think Konami realized they couldn't compete with it, as the 70" machine cost $24,000. Then when it came to Chapter II, it was a simple ROM swap on the NWK-TR. So there are actually 3 Racing Jam games, but one looks much better than the others.
The Japanese and European versions have been dumped and you can try launching it but it freezes as soon as you get into any race. My American version has not been, but it will be soon. It's the same sort of thing with Racing Jam 1, except the 4 Gymkahana are technically playable in 1st person, with lots of graphical issues.
Chicken Master02 That would be preferable but the wiring is so different that I'd have to hack a lot more cables to get it playable. Plus you'd need a handbrake and clutch, which none of my machines have.
I missed out on most of these Konami drivers; probably cuz my local Chuck E. Cheese never had any of them unlike others who have commented. Also yeah man, I love hacking into them old PC/console steering wheels, but I prefer using something I can easily maintain, and I've opened up that Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1 before; it is absolute GARBAGE!! The potentiometers are stubbornly bridged together and even the clamping sucks. Heck even the Dreamcast official wheel has better quality than that lol. Have you modded another wheel to play this yet?
Since I got the entire Racing Jam Super Deluxe machine, there's no need to mod anymore wheels. But I still keep the Thrustmaster around for the heck of it.
After actually (attempting) rewiring one to try using on my Model 3 driving game boards and PC (with the Ultimarc A-PAC), it WORKED but the pots for the hand pedals lose calibration quickly. I have no idea how to replace them. I was able to isolate the lugs of the pots inside by carefully desoldering them and daisy chaining the +5V and GND. Theoretically you'll need to run a new Mini DIN (6-pin) connector to the wheel attachment completely, and I think there is an unused pin on the 6-pin connector inside the base you would need to solder in order to properly use everything. Not a difficult wheel to mod but you're lucky if yours has working pots. Did you get the other buttons and paddles working on your GP1 for this?
solunasunrise What was painful? The gameplay? I explain in the description that I currently only have 1 analog control wired up, (steering or acceleration).
It looks like Gran Turismo 1 on Steroids. I have a guilty pleasure for 90's arcade games, they remind me of my early childhood.

•On the technical software side - both Racing Jam and RJ: Chapter II ran on *fully 60fps (frames per second)* , while Thrill Drive is only at *30fps (or likely in 32fps)* ala Midnight Run: Road Fighters 2 - Winding Heat tandem & GTI Club.
•Also, *the official soundtrack of Thrill Drive (1998), is out here: (Please check it out!)*

•Right now, I spend playing on Thrill Drive on older MAME versions (esp. on 0.147 / 0.148) due to compatibility (faster emulation speed up to normal).
I learned to drive stick from this game 😳. Didn't realize how rare it was. I played it at a Game Works near me.
I used to be a general manager at chuck e cheese and we had many of these at a bunch of locations. Fun game
Used to play this at a Chuck e cheese in monroiva ca
That kill switch really makes sense.. and gives me closure to one of the best multiplayer racing games in the 2000s. This game was MAJOR in Hawaii, almost all major arcades had a cabinet. But the main arcade franchise "fun factory" had that big screen cockpit. The pearlridge location on Oahu had 6 of those fuckers lined up at the front of the entrance. It was a great time. One of the best things about this game was being able to gain speed. And drift/clip opponents and make them spin out. 😅😅
I remember going to a fun factory and I saw a Maximum Tune cabinet there.
This takes me back to Junior High School days. Used to play this a lot along with Battle Gear 3.
Unfortunately as the arcade there closed nowadays the game is also gone. It's basically a once-in-a-lifetime experience haha.
The game does have banger soundtracks as well.
That start menu 2nd BGM... got that CapVS SNK vibe... smooth ~
8:10 - "Do you like some House music?" - That line was also used in Tekken 3 Tiger Jackson's ending!
Oh, nice! I always thought it was just "Vox, voxy" or something like that.
Honestly amazes me all the crazy arcade and retro gaming equipment you have and the setups you need to create to make it all work. Awesome stuff.
S-Tuned It's all out of my love for the hobby. =)
You sir are a legend for the setup alone. I've only had the pleasure of playing Racing Jam once, but it left such a great impression that I often think about it to this day. Which is why am here watching the video. Thank you!
JDMs realistic controls in a crazy ass pace track, Sound awesome!!
25:47 "Alright, let's see how i'm gonna move this car"
25:56 "Good, 3° gear but i need the firts one"
26:00 "Maybe this one? nope, it doesn't work"
26:03 "FU#% THIS SH#%!!!!"

I think he forgot the fact that you probably need to use the clutch when you start...
maybe..
I didn't have the clutch or the other gears wired up at the time I made this video.
I wasn't sure until I saw the track map with the green squares, but I played this game as a kid! I'd forgotten all about it. I was never much good.
@@Vectrex4Life can't wait, it's the only thing I listen to at work (even it it makes me do dumb shit)
I just love 90's arcade racers!
Thanks for the video! I really like to see more footage of this game and the prequel.
You are one seriously intelligent and dedicated guy. To figure out how all this works... my man, well done :)
Thanks, the arcade hobby drives me crazy sometimes but it's very rewarding.
S-Tuned It sure is. Though there have been 3 sequels since the original game's release in 1999.
Thrill Drive is cool. I currently have a video on the Japan course, but I plan on doing it again because of the newer MAME versions, along with the USA and Europe courses.
burnout ( the first two ) was inspired by thrill drive
I bet Racing Jam Chapter II plus Eurobeat would be cool. And it’s sick how you tracked down the machine and got it working. Really looking forward to anything else you make about this.
Thanks! That's a cool idea, and it would work because there's an option to turn off the music in the test menu. Maybe I'll have to include eurobeat in a race or two when I make the full playthrough video.
I don't mean to be that one guy, but...
More Forgotten Games? :P
I'm terrible at giving accurate time estimates so....sometime. I have a few working scripts for heavily edited videos that are similar in style to Forgotten Games. WTF Craigslist Ads 5 being one of them.
Honestly, if I ever got an original Racing Jam PCB set, I would consider making an episode on the games. They deserve it.
@@Vectrex4Life well, now you can take your time
Awesome job capturing this!
Alrighty!! Will do. :) Again thanks for this. ^__^ Hehe~
Holy shit. I've been looking for the name of this game for ages. The last time I've played this was back when I was 8 and it only appeared in one arcade in one specific mall here. Thanks for giving me some childhood flashbacks.
No problem. =)
Issues with this game on mame:
Car textures are not right, proably due to the konami 2d chips not figured out. The textures are random every time the game boots up. Ex: The skyline with a finish flag texture.
Slow, proably due to SHARC emulation.
Game freezes, like some other konami 3d games. (Winding heat, fighting bujtsu, thrill drive, teraburst)
Sound hardware emulation is not perfect.
Cobra version did a gfx test, then crashes.
Oh cool, another one these. Keep up the good work.
This game looks EPIC!
Racing Jam is The best game i ever been played on Arcade Better than any racing arcade :-)
The series is absolutely one of my favorites. Have you played any of them recently?
A under subbed RUclipsr. You derserve so many damn subs. Keep it up! :)
Thank you very much!
PLEASE SHOW GAMEPLAY OF BEGINNER B. THANK YOU FOR THIS NOSTALGIC TRIP. LITERALLY HAVE BEEN LOOKING EVERYWHERE FOR THIS GAME.
WOW, I never heard of this game it looks really fun
Wow I never heard of Racing Jam, that's so cool
Amazing find Vectrex
Racing Jam has more emphasis on the clutch than Ch.ll
Chapter 2 includes 3 new secret cars.
Cobra version renders everything in quads, while nwk tr renders in triangles
sound channels are handled differently on the cobra (2 channels for sound effects, 2 channels for music)
while nwk-tr has the channels mixed together.
I wish there's more arcade racing machines with a clutch.
Chapter II removed the Gymkhana courses and the tuning, though I think they just kept the clutch and H-gate shifting for the sake of being easy to upgrade the game in the same machine.
hey off topic though , the unknown konami pcb for the puri puri game, have u got it to someone who can help you dump it ? Thanks !
I subscribed to your channel homie , your channel it's cool really
Hi there! Wish we can see some gameplay of both the original Racing Jam and this...
Bammer2001 I do have a couple of gameplay clips on my Twitter, @Vectrex4Life . Once I have all the controls wired up, I'll make a properly recorded full playthrough similar to how I made the Sunset Riders one.
Vectrex4Life Thanks, buddy.
I'm thinking of Thrill Drive from 1999. It actually runs on the same, Konami NWK-TR hardware. system16.com/hardware.php?id=581&gid=898#898
Vectrex4Life ..... And it's still impossible to emulate on mame
Hmm... I'm still thinking it may have been something else. But I was so young I can barely remember what it looked like.
Never seen this at the arcades.
Thats crazy! Dope vid man. Nice job bringing back the dead. Keep up the good work. Cant wait for another forgotton game. Hilarious series 😂Thumbs up👍

I really like how your intention for reviving the nearly forgotten game like this by hacking the arcade system itself. Good job!

Cool . Like
Racing Jam was supposed to actually run on more powerful hardware than this board; maybe Cobra, or likely something more powerful. I remember watching a video of the original Racing Jam demo supposedly running on the hardware and it looked much closer to, even arguably better than Scud Race on Model 3.
Yes, I have heard about that. Interesting, but even so, I think the game doesn't look half bad.
Have this game ported to MAME?
The Japanese and European versions have been dumped and you can try launching it but it freezes as soon as you get into any race. My American version has not been, but it will be soon. It's the same sort of thing with Racing Jam 1, except the 4 Gymkahana are technically playable in 1st person, with lots of graphical issues.
@@Vectrex4Life i hope it would fixed
holy shit they installed a suicide clock
Why didn't you hook it up to your real racing arcade machine?
Chicken Master02 That would be preferable but the wiring is so different that I'd have to hack a lot more cables to get it playable. Plus you'd need a handbrake and clutch, which none of my machines have.

It looks like Gran Turismo 2 with better graphics. I could see this being on the Dreamcast during that time.
That driving segment was hard to watch, man
Benzodiazepine Having only steering or hardly any throttle was not my choice. Read the description.
This game is part of my childhood, but the game ruined nowadays. Dang.
Emulation will eventually become an option. But it is Konami's fault for the suicide battery and for keeping them as arcade exclusives.
