    I say the Overlord from Overlord 1, he was a hero that fought the previous overlord and became literally a fallen hero by grabbing his foe and plunging them both to the bottom of a tower. After that, creatures called minions healed his body and he became the new overlord and conquered all the land while killing the other 7 heroes off that helped him

    No honorable mention for Handsome Jack? He was a good guy with good intentions (Borderlands The Pre-sequel) and slowly became corrupt with everything his friends did to him (ending of Borderlands The Pre-sequel). He WANTED to be a good guy, but all his so called "friends" betrayed him. He was amazingly developed and he became quite awesome.

      Martin Ipsen He wasn't good though because he always had the intention of trying to take over pandora and destroying the bandits from space, it was one of the reasons he tricked the OG vault hunters into opening the vault and hence why he had the destroyer's eye as a weapon on board the space station, he was never truly a good guy everything he did was to serve his own purpose, yes the vault on elpis corrupted him but he was already corrupted before that and a lot of the stuff he does in Pre-sequel (before they betray him) shows that,

      Ace Darkheart I dont think they should of put out WOTLK so soon. Its like they took two of the most fan favorited villians (Arthas and Illidan) and killed them off with the first two expansions. I could honestly give two craps about the burning legion because those two characters were so much MORE to us, the players.

    Artorias was never a villain, he was just another victim of the Abyss you had to mercy kill. He was literally corrupted RIGHT as you come into his boss area. He was FIGHTING against the corruption up until that point The Lore around Artorias was fabricated by Anor Londo because, they didn't want the people to know one of the four Knights was corrupted by the Abyss.
    So gotta say big negative for the Artorias entry; not a villain, just another victim boss of Dark Souls.

    • @MatOliveira00
      @MatOliveira00 8 лет назад

      +XenoJehuty84 Almost exactly. My interpretation is that he was defeated and corrupted inside the abyss, when he sacrificed himself using his shield to save Sif. So, yes, he's a victim, it was not his choice to become a "bad" guy... They didn't get it right into the video, but when you meet him, he is this corrupted a long time ago version of himself, without self will or anything like that, like a zombie of the abyss.

    I don't think these guys understand what happened to Artorias. He didn't really "fall to the dark side" like Darth Vader did. Darth Vader made the choices that led him to be evil. Artorias, by definition to the best of my memory, was so far on the light side that as soon as the Abyss touched him, he had no chance against it. It essentially infected him and corrupted his soul into a mindless killer.

      Not in more recent games, no. But in Metal Gear 1 & 2, he's the quintessential villain. And the purpose of MGSV's darker story is to show us his transition from hero to villain.

      kopopo23 I'd like to disagree, but in all honesty I seriously hope you're right. XD In any case, despite Kojima constantly trying to convince us that BB is super bad now, none of the footage we've seen really supports that. :P

    • @kopopo23
      @kopopo23 9 лет назад +1

      SalmonOfK84 kojima started off BB as a bad guy but he's progressively made him a more "good guy" so to speak, as the series progresses. it's in mgs3 and onward that shows his true motives and intentions and really blurs the lines of good and evil; no right or wrong, just who's side you're on.

    I remember reading somewhere that Arthas the Lich King was based on Siegfried from Soul Calibur the only difference between them is that Arthas let himself be possessed/controlled by the sword while Siegfried was sort of against it (although Soul Edge told him he could revive his father or something like that)

  • @razvanhellsing
    @razvanhellsing 9 лет назад +19

    *Spoilers alert? :D*
    What's REALLY awesome about Artorias is that even if he fell victim to the corruption, he fights you for *2* possible reasons:
    1. The first reason might be that Manus sent him to stop you, which would be the obvious one.
    2. He fights you to prevent you from suffering the same thing that happened to him. Notice that when he enters the "arena" he kills that monster. He could've tagged along easily with the monster to fight with you since he's also a product of Manus.
    If you look on the Wiki you will see some deleted Artorias quotes which point out to the *2nd* reason - he tries to save you.
    So does Sif. You can see this better if you play the DLC before the boss fight with Sif. If you do that, he sniffs Artorias's smell on you AND you, because you meet him in the DLC to fight manus along with the grey wolf. Sif wants to prevent you from taking the ring because, as Artorias, he wants to stop you from having the same fate as his faithful companion Artorias did.
    THIS is why Artorias is and will be one of the greatest boss battles and character in game that I've ever and will ever meet.

    • @Mystic_Texan
      @Mystic_Texan 9 лет назад +1

      All of it was basically right. Just the fact that he wasn't corrupted until you met him. He was fighting it off but he was too weak to continue. He had one broken arm from his fight with Manus. When he looks at you when you enter, he tries to warn you to leave before he got corrupted by the darkness.

    • @razvanhellsing
      @razvanhellsing 9 лет назад

      Well I might have gotten a little bit of the last part wrong but still, he is somehow still trying to warn you/protect you from what's about to come.

      Angelo Petrillo By all mean, i don't mean the game is bad or anything. Heck i don't even play WoW pass the vanilla (have too much shit to do, can't devote in that massive game. Plus, i'm poor). But i do read about the lore now and again, and in my opinion the best part is Arthas portion. And now that he is dead, i lost a lot of interest in that universe in general.
      I'm not gonna judge anyone, because your opinion are your own. And mine simply is "I got bored because my favorite character died."

      Shinigami Sama to an extent i agree when i played WoW when i was young lich king was the shit the whole story behind arthas and just the lich king in general was amazing but i still think that blizzard have done a good job keeping WoW alive throughout the years instead of completely ruining it

    • @ShinigamiSamaH
      @ShinigamiSamaH 9 лет назад +1

      Will Tyquin True that for each individual tale, they are pretty good. But with the entire lore as a whole, it isn't the same without the old Scourge, the Lich King and his vile blade. As someone who played through Warcraft 3 and TFT, i know that Arthas is one of the key role and main focus, the one man that trigger many events destined to re-shape Azeroth itself.
      In general, they could have done so much more with the Lich King. You know, instead of let him sit on his ass for god know how long in his castle, being an NPC that give out quests, and then constantly being mauled by raid parties days and nights.
      Sure, it would eventually become 'character milking', but it doesn't feel like so *yet*.
      Another thing that bother me in WoW is that major characters doesn't do jack shit, most of the time (until an event trigger a cutscene). For instance, the old Death Knight Arthas would of personally lead his troops and raid the heck out of the Alliance and anything that breath, for that matter.

      Since this is already spoiler territory, gonna throw bits from first Diablo most fans these days aren't as much aware. Aidan, or the dark wanderer as he is called in Diablo II, was the son of King Leoric, or as we know him, the skeleton king (who, I might add, could easily be on this list too... especially if you account what you find from him in Diablo III). Aidan also killed his little brother while fighting Diablo who embodied the young boy after Lazarus inserted the big demon lord's soulstone on the poor boy's forehead, and proceeds in an act one can only call hubris, to attempt controlling Diablo's essence himself, thus becoming the dark wanderer.
      Also in the Diablo universe worthwhile mentions of good guys turning bad:
      Tal Rasha, sacrificing himself to become the prison of Baal... and failing miserably, becoming host instead.
      Zoltun Kulle, who is probably one of the best characters in Diablo III... starting out faintly noble Horadric mage, only to be corrupted by lust for power and to become the unkillable terror he is.
      Izual, the shining lieutenant of Tyriel, who again, in hubris led an attack on the Hellforge, getting captured and corrupted in prisonment, thus becaming the most fearsome fallen angel before...
      Malthael, not going to spoil this one, if anyone reading hasn't played through Diablo III and especially Reaper of Souls, do so. Those who have know exactly what I mean, this also applies to all the angels under the charge of wisdom, so cool and so damn well written.
      And of course Blood Raven and The Summoner as mentioned by others on this post, in-lore fighting alongside Aidan only to become maddened monsters themselves.
      Even a few quite well fleshed out minor ones, like the guy Kormac is hunting when you meet him in the depths of old Tristram cathedral. Or the ruling council of Zakarum, the high priests in Diablo II.
      Pretty sure one could come up with other characters as well, because Diablo is chock full of great tragic characters becoming the very thing they tried to stop, but I'm sure others will add up to this :)
      People give Stracraft and Warcraft much praise for their writing, and for good reason. But I still thing Diablo saga as a whole is the best of the bunch, even though much of the writing has sort of faded into the background due to the way the games tend to represent it.

    Cloud is boring? As a main hero in a Final Fantasy, he's one of the most complicated in the entire 30 year history of the franchise. I would say the original game could have done better in revealing how fucked up he was psychologically and emotionally quite a bit sooner than just before the end of the game...but that doesn't change the fact of Cloud's character and his overall fragmented psyche. Still, as clliche as it is, Sephiroth is a pretty awesome villain, so I give you points for that at least.

    Going for a lesser known character, I'd like to bring up Orsted from the Japan-only game Live A Live. Live A Live is a JRPG with a chess-like battle system that follows several separate stories from different time periods. After you beat all the other stories, Orsted's story is unlocked. His story starts out how you expect, a medieval knight trying to save the princess from a demon. As his journey continues, though, things just get worse and worse, with every action of his resulting in the death and destruction of everyone and everything he cares about. The end result is that he eventually embraces that fate, taking on the name and power of the demon and threatening all of time, resulting in the heroes from all the other stories assembling in his time to put an end to his threat. Bonus points for the option to play as Orsted in the end, thus giving the player the chance to play as each chapter's final boss and wail on the heroes, in one case even having the option to destroy everything with the push of a button. Great way of building his menace.

    Loghain from Dragon Age: Origins. At the beginning of the game, he's established as a war hero who rose from humble beginnings to being former King Maric's greatest friend and ally. He's also fiercely nationalistic and puts the good of Ferelden above all else (though he's deluded into thinking that the neighbouring nation of Orlais combined with the new king's weak leadership is Ferelden's greatest threat).
    He's a villain but his motivations aren't selfish. He truly thinks he's doing what's best.

    • @Archimonde45
      @Archimonde45 8 лет назад

      +Jordan Cantrell I'd like to see those statistics. Regardless, from a story perspective, the case that Arthas's fall from being a hero is stronger. Illidan's tale is one of unrequited love and, upon it not being returned, choosing to pursue power - perhaps why it might be able to garner so much sympathy. Don't get me wrong, Illidan's story was done in a fantastic way and I empathize with his character; unreturned love leaves a terrible void in one's heart and most people would do anything to fill it with something else and I think Illidan's choice is very fitting. That said, Arthas's motivations are much more grand and truly moving.
      Where all of Illidan's motivations were self-driven Arthas has been motivated heavily to do right by his people. Never were his intentions about him, but about serving those he represented. This is a strong theme of his upbringing in more than one way. As heir to the throne there was a burden on Arthas to learn that a King must ever serve their people, a theme that Terenas touches on more than once during WotLK; meanwhile, as a paladin his code of conduct was to aid those ever less fortunate than he, who truly needed aid in a world that would give none. His entire ascent to power was not for the sake of curing a broken heart, or a lust for power, but to have the strength to protect his people from whatever would do them harm. But he shouldered that burden alone, even forgoing the love he felt for Jaina, to do what he felt was a King's duty.
      It can even be argued that as the Lich King Arthas continued seeking to do right as he saw it. Rather than waging a genocidal slaughter as a surface look would suggest, Scourge writings within WoW strongly imply that the Scourge's goal was the unification of Azeroth in the event of another Legion invasion. A unified world would stand a better chance than one divided.

    • @probablynotdad6553
      @probablynotdad6553 8 лет назад

      Thats way too much shit to read first off. Secondly, you can't forget what happened to Illidan. After helping to save the planet from the burning legion, having his love shot down, he even helped save the planet again after being imprisoned only to be betrayed yet again by his own brother and the woman he loves. They call Illidan the betrayer, but in reality he's been betrayed more by the two people he loved most then he has betrayed anyone else.

    To be honest... i'm not sure Gabriel should be on this list. Playing through the two games, he never REALY did anything evil. Sure he killed a bunch of templars and others, but that would just count as self defense. They invaded HIS castle and attacked him, whet were they expecting. And when he killed the girl, he was controlled with that mask, not realy his fault. The way i see it, he's more of an anti-hero who took on the burden of those curses (the gauntlet, the sins, the vampirism) because someone had to.

    WoW really does expand on Arthas by showing as still kind of a hero. The thing is, the Lich King controls the Scourge not just in a sense that he decides which battles they fight, but also by keeping them in line. If it wasn't for Arthas, the Scourge would've swept over Azeroth in a chaotic killing spree, but with Arthas keeping them on a leash, they mostly stayed in Northrend.

    The thing about wheatley that I found most interesting was that it wasn't just the programs designed to make GladOS, well, GladOS, that changed him. His entire exchange during that cutscene shows there was more to it than that. "Tiny little wheatley did all this!" The entire time, he was struggling with a sense of worthlessness, with feelings of having never been appreciated. He worked and he worked, and in many ways, you wouldn't have made it out without him, but he never gets any thanks. All of the times he took a leap of faith, taking the risk that the lies he was told that he would die if he did certain things may be true, just to get you out, never once do you thank him, or even speak to him. He feels worthless, unloved, and empty. And then, he gets power. Lots of it. He's not useless anymore, he's important! But then GladOS needles him, insults him. "You didn't do anything, she did all the work." That's what truly pushed him over the edge, beyond any measures put in place in the system itself.
    He fell to far more than a few lines of code, and that's my favorite part. Despite being a machine, he displays the most natural and human fall to villainy out of any villains I can really think of.

    • @KazumiKiguma
      @KazumiKiguma 8 лет назад

      +Jarsia Actually, yes and no. He was a jedi who rebelled in order to help fight in a war against the Mandalorians. After his side wins the war, he learns about the Sith Emperor and tries to kill him alongside his not-really Padawan Malak. The Emperor was too strong for them and brainwashed them both into becoming Sith and going back into the known galaxy while the Emperor remained hidden. Then he had his mind wiped by the Jedi and canonically became good again. Then he got kicked out of the Jedi AGAIN because he got married to Bastilla, who also got kicked out. THEN he vaguely remembers the Emperor, meets Lord Scourge who is part of a plan to betray and kill the Emperor, tries to fight him again, and gets betrayed by Scourge. Instead of getting brainwashed again, he's locked up in a hidden prison for hundreds of years, mentally fighting against the Emperor's will while being sustained by the Emperor's power. He's eventually freed by your character in SWTOR if you're part of the Republic, and then killed by your character if you're part of the Empire. AND THEN we find out he somehow survived it and is using a secret organization of people that worship him to try and destroy the Emperor. While that sounds good, the Emperor is recovering at the time, and is basically asleep, and in order to kill him, Revan planned to wake him up, which would cause a lot of bad shit to happen considering the Emperor's plan the entire time is to sacrifice everyone in the entire galaxy to make himself more powerful. After beating up Revan, we learn he didn't really survive, only his Dark Side did and was acting on pure hatred and rage, while his Light Side was already a force ghost. Then he finally fully dies.
      Revan's gone up and down on the see-saw a ton of times, but several of those times were mind control, or not even the good part of him remaining, so it shouldn't really count for this list.

    they didnt give Artorious enough credit. when you fight him, his sword is in his off hand. His dominant arm got broken protecting his companion sif. (who is his dog buddy and also a sad boss fight in the vanilla game) He went to the abyss to stop its spread, but what ultimately defeated by the lord of the abyss Manus. But he clings to life, and when you find him he is still killing the creatures of the abyss, and only fights you as a gatekeeper of sorts. so not only does he fight you with his off hand, he has no shield, and still manages to be one of the most memorable and more difficult fights in the entire franchise. Artorious is a fucking badass

    I don't know if any games has Satan as a character, but he is definitely the ultimate good guy turned bad guy. He was god's right hand man, naturally a position one would assume would be filled by the most good being (excluding god), and then he became the opposite of god. He went from most good to most evil.

    Man, you guys missed a big one. Big Boss from the Metal Gear Solid series. He starts out a hero, and slowly over the course of his games, you can see his transformation from Naked Snake to Big Boss. Its rather major since he's actually the main character of the series. Solid Snake is like a transitional character, holding his place, for his games, and the series does a great job of masking Big Boss as main character.

    What always made me sad about Artorias is because he was corrupted so badly by the Abyss because he wanted a human. Because he was something more pure and good than a human it was easier for him to fall to the darkness.

    Sigma from Mega Man X started out as the best Maverick Hunter ( or Irregular Hunter as they're sometimes called ), but became the always resurrecting badass villain. In fact, he went Maverick around the same time Zero was cured of the Maverick virus iirc....

    I feel like artorias didn't really give in as theyre saying. its more of he used himself as a human shield to contain the abyss and in the process became absorbed into it. so its almost as if even when he's your enemy, the simple fact that he is corrupted is a heroic act in itself. he allowed himself to be corrupted to prevent the abyss from corrupting the world

    So you missed Big Boss,Deathwing,Garrosh,Illidan,Sylvanas Windrunner,Kel'Thuzad,Sargeras(heck,you could make a top 7 list on warcraft villains alone),Handsome Jack,Comstock from Bioshock Infinite(kinda fits into this list) and i guess there are a lot of others i didn't mention....

    I was hoping Gabriel would be number 1
    his transformation wasn't "good is boring" it was more of him being slowly being forced to sacrifice more of himself until there was nothing left to give
    and he lost faith in the world and how he couldn't save his wife.
    I'm not doing it justice with this description. the music the animations the voice acting, his physical transformation they all make his development so briliant

    And artorias' is even stronger knowing that, he is fighting you with his left arm broken and fights you with his right hand. He is a natural left handed soldier, as well as giving his shield to protect his dog.

    the owner of apatur sciense was dying of chanser and wanted to be made into a machine to save himself but couldent get there in time.. he left it to his assistant who he likely had a relationship (its very likely he is shells father)
    we can tell that this is the likely senario by various hints scattered around and then by the latin lyrics of the drone song at the end...

    I'm so freaking surprised Sephiroth wasn't number one because everybody goes gaga over him (I've never been a Final Fantasy fan). Wheatley's transformation broke my heart even though he became even MORE interesting as a character.
