Fire Emblem Path of Radiance had a mechanic wherein you could get some pre-battle dialogue in the preparations before the next map. Some times, this mechanic was just some optional story, some times it was a hint about what to do on the map, and some times it was goodies, like items and even new characters. But while doing another playthrough of the game, I noticed that if you try to skip through these scenes, the game turns down said optional recruits. You can say yes or no when they ask to join, and the game defaults to no if you try to save a minute of cutscenes.

FFX-2 can be far worse too, it's not just 'not getting the 100% because you skipped dialogue' it's 'not getting 100% because you haven't seen every piece of dialogue in the game'
For instance, you walked past an NPC? Perfect Ending gone, was that NPC hidden behind boxes or not at all important to the quest you're on right now? doesn't matter, Perfect Ending gone,
    It's brutal.

I generally like the Option to Skip, regardless of intent to use it.
Because sometimes you died to a boss right after the scene and need to reload, or sometimes it's painfully obvious the sidequest in question just isn't that interesting or your brand of humor.

I feel like the fact that the Yakuza games are kinda punishing as if you skip the cutscene you will be completely confused and totally lost as to what exactly is happening at all. Like i skipped a scene and i was sunddenly in a gokart race. I have no idea why or how i got there.

There's a certain type of ADHD that makes it really hard for people to concentrate on long dialogue and cutscenes, even if they're interested in them. I know several people this way who very often skip things for that reason. I also have ADHD, but mine is a different type that doesn't have that problem. It could be my 10th playthrough, and I'm still likely to watch all of it. I only skip if it's a case where I'm replaying for achievements or something after just finishing the game.

A friend of mine got The Song ending accidentally, because he spent too long admiring the area she's in. When he asked me what happened and I explained, he went to resume on stream. I knew what was about to happen and he was confused. So I told him "That IS an ending, after all." His response was "Oh. Oh that I hate." and proceeded to first try slaughter his way back to the song and immediately run for the elevator this time, utterly pissed at what happened. Then he needed to rest for the night after struggling a dozen times or so on The Song. Point of order about this, it doesn't matter if your moving about the area, if you don't get on the elevator soon enough, you get The Song ending.

@@jekw23 You can 100% FFX-2 on a 1st playthru, but it is one of the most convoluted, tedious, patience-burning, and easily failed experiences in gaming. Even diligently following a guide, since the playthru is so long, you can easily make 1 minor mistake worth a tiny fraction of a % and not even realize your mistake until the end of the game. Incidentally, since 100% also involves grinding up strong enough to beat all the game's superbosses as part of 100%ing the story... yeah.
NG+ and alternate decisions get up to like 110% completion percentage, meaning a NG+ run can easily 100% without doing everything perfectly.

    • @illyahrthebard3303

Once you have completed a cutscene and it has registered for your completion, you don't have to do so in later NG+ playthroughs. There is only one exception to this: Listening to Maechen in Mushroom Rock Road. If you skip any of his extremely long dialogue at all, in any playthrough, you miss him appearing in Zanarkand in Chapter 5 of that playthrough. You will get an Episode Concluded, and not an Episode Complete.

The percentage in FF X-2 is cumulative so if you missed any cutscenes during your first playthough and you sided with The Youth League (which is needed to get 100% in a single playthough) during New Game Plus any cutscenes you didn't see during the initial playthough will count. So with that 97% you could have just sided with New Yevon and the cutscenes you would have seen could have brought you to 100%.

The story is the main reason I play, the gameplay always passes for me if I can beat the gameplay. Some people even want to skip Mass Effect's story 😲
The Witcher may not have the best graphics or gameplay (it's not that hard), but I enjoyed the story and exploration. Since it lacks controller support, I use Steam's controller configuration to map the mouse and keyboard. Now I'm sure the remake will improve on the graphics and gameplay, and are they even making games without controller support these days 🤔 (the remake might come to consoles too, then PlayStation players will want a port of The Witcher 2 at the very least)
Now there's a difference between skipping the main story and prolonging it. Sometimes side quests are unavailable if you advance the main story. In The Witcher 3, I discovered a new quest just by turning in a contract earlier than usual, Geralt gets arrested for self defense and wow. If I waited until after the King's Gambit, then I'd still not know about it. If you don't do the King's Gambit before a certain point, that too will be missed and Cerys won't be Queen 😥

I genocide ending-ed the first time I played Undertale. I got impatient very quickly during the first fight, hit mercy twice, and still it carried on, so I realized it was much, much faster and easier to just kill everyone you came across, and carried on my way like this. Killing Toriel was a little sad, so I did actually try at first to see if I could spare her, which, since I knew nothing about the game didn't know if it was for sure posible, but I got frustrated and impatient, and then killed her too. I was playing like you'd play Pokémon, so from the beginning I was wandering around triggering every possible encounter, in order to level grind. After I beat the game, and the Sans fight, I did a little bit of online reading (though not enough), learned it is possible to not kill anyone, and decided to replay it, which is when I learned that doing the genocide route permanently affects future runs of the game.

I was watching one youtuber that was playing a game and he tried to open a door. How the door could be opened was told in the dialog but he was talking about how he loved the game and so on, so he did not listen at all. Also he tried to run past what was done in a particular order all the while telling how he loved the game. So now i more or less watch someone for a solution to a problem in the game and not a full gameplay. For me i listen to the story and play accordingly, and much later or in Starfields case the NG+ i am more into exploring other parts of the game since i already played it like i should.

While all these are interesting and I can see the logic of the developers there're two things I think they should do on top of these. The first is give the gamers a warning that's more right in your face and totally obvious about these "punishments" seeing as a gamer may not want to purchase it if they knew about them. In essence the developers are doing the same thing the gaming industry used to do before the advent of the game rating system. You have no idea if you'll be sold a lemon for an apple.
The second thing I've yet to see is developers targeting the plethora of modders in the modding community. Just like they did in FF X-2 punishing the gamer for not listening to all the dialogue the developers should imo target the modding community especially when just like the dialogue the rendering of the graphics be it the characters themselves or the backgrounds as well as the placing of items and the like are equally as time consuming as the game's dialogue and sometimes even more important. I'd like to see developers punish those gamers who tinker with their game's appearances or attire or the backgrounds or even the placement of items. If the background is altered then the game freezes and the gamer has to start the game anew for tampering with it. If items are tampered with then they become useless and soft lock the game with the same effect. If it's the characters who are changed or given attire not in the game itself then the punishment should be the character gradually being debuffed in damage output over time making it impossible to solve the game towards the end. Naturally like above a warning should be given that is totally blatant and not hidden or vague.

Why would someone get 100% completion of a game if they skipped part of the game? It seems like an obvious thing to do.

"Cant 100% game if you skipped dialogues"
RIP Horizon Forbidden West players [*]
Tbh I dont think if I ever listetend to whole dialogues in this game... They are just ridiculously long compared to HZD. So I just read them and when I did that I instantly skipped to another line so I wouldnt waste time. I feel like listening to all dialogues could take more time than finishing some missions xD.
As for unskippable cutscenes... I think only worse thing than that is unskippable credits after ending the game... If not skipping they should just give us option to fast foward these credits like they did in Horizon Forbidden West... as for long credits id give a example of Watch Dogs 1... also it has like 2 or even 3 different credits and you cant skip it which is so annoying.

As someone, who dislikes _too much_ obnoxious fooling around _and_ these ''spoilerbaby'' times - I appreciate Denise from GTA SA telling us that Smoke's been selling crack when her relationship status goes zero, as one of her ''break-up'' calls... I mean - c'mon. Given the mere 3 missions worth of time before The Green Sabre and the easy AF date completions, _even if_ you can skip like 2 in-between, AND more than plenty of bar time - you deserve a lil push to actually play the game

10 Games That Punish You For Ignoring The Story aka anything but good ending, the only one that is actually in line with the title is ff that is actually kinda weird. If you have a choice mean is your story and your ending so have nothing to do about getting punished. There are tho some legit games that do actually that, for exemple you are getting ready for a war but the game keep saying you that you might need to do more research, if you ignore it and still start the war this will make you loose it cause you are missing some tactical advanteges, that makes sense and in fact you are getting punished cause you didn't do your job well, but other then this, eh..

I don't think dev should punish players for skipping the cutscenes. Sure it may seem like players are ignoring dev hard work by skipping, but what happen if the reason for skipping is because they already played the game 10 times already? Wouldn't that mean the opposite is true? Being punished because players care about dev hard work? Lol XD
