Nintendo, on the other hand, runs pretty much their entire online service on _our_ machines, so the cost of maintaining Nintendo Online is pretty damn close to zero. They outsource the entire cost to us and then have the gall to demand we pay for the privilege.

At the end of the day you need to spend more money on one or both to improve your experience. That’s how I see it at least. As someone who grew up with my Dad's Windows 98, this got me to laugh. I remember having to use a cord to connect to the internet, the dialup sounds...it was kinda neat as a kid. Then I realize that the quality I got for the 2 times I used Nintendo internet was almost *worse* than that.
How many of you knew that when Nintendo added the NSO logo to the home screen, they also added a feature that was default to on letting GOOGLE see what you're doing on your switch through their online service to spy on consumers. You also have to turn this off in both your switch settings and the settings inside the NSO app seperately if you don't want this. Ain't that something
Paid online services are a blight on the video game industry. There's no reason why I should have to pay $20 per year for Mario Maker and Smash Bros. online when those were free on the Wii U, and there's no reason why I should have to effectively rent a collection of NES and SNES games when the Wii had virtual console with even more NES and SNES games, plus N64 and several non-Nintendo systems, 15 fucking years ago.
They actually weren't. I dislike switch online as much as the next person, but lets not spread misinformation. Nintendo is in the process of replacing a multiplayer system they've used up till now that is about 18-19 years old, and thus, splatoon 2 has an unused check in its programming to see if said system was running on windows 98, but that does not mean that the nintendo servers themselves are running windows 95/98, it just indicates that the program is old enough that it would be able to run on 98.

Matter of fact, the servers have very little to do with switch online - they just do the matchmaking. The rest is P2P, meaning the quality of the online experience is purely based on netcode and the connection quality of the people taking part in the online experience. Therefore, the age of the system used for the matchmaking servers has little to no impact on the quality of the online services. Be (rightfully) angry at switch online all you want, but be angry for the right reasons. I don't know much about other online games as I'm really more of a singleplayer kinda guy, but when it comes to smash, the netcode is actually okay (though far from amazing). The main problem that makes it to where a lot of online matches are laggy as fuck lies with the fact that the threshold for internet stability where the game doesn't let you play online is WAY too low. If they raised that, yes you might not be able to play smash online if you got shitty-ass comcast internet, or you might have to buy a LAN adapter to make sure your connection is more stable, but that would ensure that the quality of online matches would increase DRASTICALLY.

Payed online shouldn't even exist in the first place. Everything they said about needing to run servers was a lie. And in the rare case that they actually do run a server for a game they can make the money from the sales of the game. It's so cheap to host a server nowadays. All three consoles have no excuses.

You know what I'd really like as far as base system features go? The ability to create folders. This was something we had on 3DS and Wii U, so why isn't it on Switch? Would certainly make navigating my library of games much more convenient. Heck, I know this because PS4 _does_ have folders while sporting a similar menu, and practically everything I've put on the console has gone into one of those or another!
They dont have voice chat or a message system to try to make friends. I hate that I need discord or whatever else, its so annoying and unnecessary. Oh and you still get cheaters online, no way to report offensive names. So stupid and backwards

Just because you personally wouldn't want the feature who how you put it "kids yelling at you" (which isn't a common scenario as you think it is btw), doesn't mean other people won't want it.

The only good thing to come out of this is that Nintendo isn’t going to use their Windows 98 servers anymore and actually get better Wi-Fi... even if it’s just slightly.

As someone who grew up with my Dad's Windows 98, this got me to laugh. I remember having to use a cord to connect to the internet, the dialup sounds...it was kinda neat as a kid.
Then I realize that the quality I got for the 2 times I used Nintendo internet was almost *worse* than that.

How many of you knew that when Nintendo added the NSO logo to the home screen, they also added a feature that was default to on letting GOOGLE see what you're doing on your switch through their online service to spy on consumers.
You also have to turn this off in both your switch settings and the settings inside the NSO app seperately if you don't want this. Ain't that something

Paid online services are a blight on the video game industry. There's no reason why I should have to pay $20 per year for Mario Maker and Smash Bros. online when those were free on the Wii U, and there's no reason why I should have to effectively rent a collection of NES and SNES games when the Wii had virtual console with even more NES and SNES games, plus N64 and several non-Nintendo systems, 15 fucking years ago.

They actually weren't. I dislike switch online as much as the next person, but lets not spread misinformation.
Nintendo is in the process of replacing a multiplayer system they've used up till now that is about 18-19 years old, and thus, splatoon 2 has an unused check in its programming to see if said system was running on windows 98, but that does not mean that the nintendo servers themselves are running windows 95/98, it just indicates that the program is old enough that it would be able to run on 98.

@@akayysworldYou kidding? Its not GOOD, but its leagues better than the servers running on extremely outdated OS. Matter of fact, the servers have very little to do with switch online - they just do the matchmaking. The rest is P2P, meaning the quality of the online experience is purely based on netcode and the connection quality of the people taking part in the online experience. Therefore, the age of the system used for the matchmaking servers has little to no impact on the quality of the online services. Be (rightfully) angry at switch online all you want, but be angry for the right reasons.
I don't know much about other online games as I'm really more of a singleplayer kinda guy, but when it comes to smash, the netcode is actually okay (though far from amazing). The main problem that makes it to where a lot of online matches are laggy as fuck lies with the fact that the threshold for internet stability where the game doesn't let you play online is WAY too low. If they raised that, yes you might not be able to play smash online if you got shitty-ass comcast internet, or you might have to buy a LAN adapter to make sure your connection is more stable, but that would ensure that the quality of online matches would increase DRASTICALLY.

Payed online shouldn't even exist in the first place. Everything they said about needing to run servers was a lie. And in the rare case that they actually do run a server for a game they can make the money from the sales of the game. It's so cheap to host a server nowadays. All three consoles have no excuses.
I dissagree that microsoft and sony don't have a reason to charge for their service. With the amount of free games and other content you get from them and the fact their services work.

They only added online because they saw that Microsoft was getting away with it. I know for a fact that the online on the PS3 works just fine even though it was free. For the 20 dollar service, it's sometimes even more expensive than the game it self. Among us, for example. For a 20 dollar subscriptions, you can buy 4 Among us copies(on steam, on mobile it's free). Some games, require online to enjoy, mainly because the main thing is multiplayer.

You know what I'd really like as far as base system features go? The ability to create folders.
This was something we had on 3DS and Wii U, so why isn't it on Switch? Would certainly make navigating my library of games much more convenient. Heck, I know this because PS4 _does_ have folders while sporting a similar menu, and practically everything I've put on the console has gone into one of those or another!
