So, what’s in the box?
Fortunately, there’s very little assembly required here.
The printer comes ready to rock and roll, with the usual power cord and phone line fax cable included.
As a little bonus, there’s a whole year’s worth of ink as well. Now before you ask the question, Brother tells us that’s around 300 pages a month, which is actually pretty impressive.
As far as setup goes, you have the option to hardwire to your home computer via the onboard USB cable conveniently tucked away inside this clever hidey hole, or setting up on your home network.
Long gone are the days when you needed a degree in IT just to print out a few pages at home.
First up, pull the paper tray out of the machine and remove the cover. Slide the paper guides so they align with the size guide to suit the type of paper you plan on using.
It’s worth noting that this particular model has the capacity to accommodate A3 which will come in handy, trust me.
Give your stack of paper a quick fan and slide it into the tray. The paper guides will need a quick adjustment so they’re snug without buckling the sheets.
Back on goes the cover, and push the tray completely into the printer until you hear that satisfying “click” sound.
The ink storage is on the right-hand side. Remove the protective orange plastic and store it in its special spot inside the printer.
Remove the various ink cartridges from their packaging, shake 15 times, then install into their respective color slots.
Believe it or not, that’s actually the hard part done. Instructions on the screen will talk you through the process of setting up the time and date, printing the nozzle alignment sheet, and then making any corrections as necessary.
Plugging in the USB cable directly to your home PC may seem like the easier option, but why restrict yourself? Both machines need not be in the same room.
Hit the settings icon denoted by the little spanner, go to network, select the WIFI option and go ahead and find your home network. Enter the password credentials and hey presto, we’re on our way.
Go ahead and install the software from the Brother website onto your - and we’re done.
There’s an app for that!
You guessed it, the Brother iPrint&Scan app is available on both the App Store and Google Play marketplace. So long as your smart phone is on the same network, you can print directly from your mobile device.
So, what do we like about the Brother MFC-J5855DW INKvestment Tank Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer?
Man, is this thing fast. Not only that, the end result is amazing with nothing sacrificed in the quality department.
Having the option of printing in A3 and not having to go to the store to buy ink are also big pluses.

I have the 6955. It's a nice machine. I doubt that there's one year of ink in the box based on my use so far (and I don't use it for printing photos, as I will explain). Also, the RUclipsr didn't show how long it takes to print a photo, and he printed on plain paper. It takes a few minutes to print a single 4x6 photo on glossy photo paper. It's super slow for photos. Very fast for documents. So I bought an Epson for printing photos. It came with 3 large bottles of black ink, and one for each color. And the capacity of those bottles is printed on them: Black: 127mL ; Colors (all three): 70 mL each. However, Brother says that the capacity of their cartridges is proprietary.
The scanner is par-excellence.

Did you discover the true cost per page. Lucky enough I used this giant ink tank technology for 450 pages before my 30 day return window passed. That calculated to 60 CENTS PER PAGE

looks incredible, even on plain paper. As a serious photographer i cant wait to print out some HQ pics. just ordered the printer directly from brother with a 15% email signup promo. I was going to go with the 6955, but almost double the price (staples only here so no promo), they seem to be identical as far as speed print head ink, just the bigger one does duplex everything up to 11x17, but i would probably never need that. my old workforce 3540 has served me pretty well, it does 2 sided scan, copy print, etc so maybe ill keep it for the scanning. the print head is useless for anything high quality after 10 years. Was going to get epson st-c4100 with 2 years of ink, but doesnt have 11x17 and the refurb was still 140 more than this.

question, looking at the manual, the 6955 has brother ... 4 software for scanning from pc - is it also on this model? manual doesnt talk about any desktop software.

Are the cartridges refillable using bottles of ink or do you have to replace them? This is an inkvestment tank model which I thought means it has refillable ink tanks.

It should be easy. The cover is hinged, but can extend an inch or two above the scanner bed (at least on my 6955).

Hi thanks for the review, I got one this one post seeing your video but I have doubt, I am seeing on test paper at one place alignment issue is it the printer problem ? also does this printer good with Photo Papers "haven't tested one"
Some images i am seeing nice print output while some horizontal line not so perfect like vertical lines on A4 paper

I'd recommend using a heavier weight of paper and setting the printer to a higher quality mode, which slows down the print speed and gives the ink a little extra time to dry. And for Photos I'd recommended BP71G glossy photo paper - our results = solidly drugstore quality.

I use to own Brother MFC-T910DW though not a good photo printer ok kind of during 2019, it use to print photo on glossy paper but it use to left roller marks on the photo if we tilt it use to appear on it.. but after seeing this MFC-J5855DW felt superb upgrade color reproduction is too good. Not sure how EPSON or Canon performs in this price range segment. I can see in Canada $300 to $500 #inkvestment or eco tank or megatank printers are available but not sure which one is good in color reproduction when we compare in real-time.
I'm glad you have covered some of the aspects with @brother printers and really helped me to take a decision on buying this.

There is specific sticker paper you would need to use. I dont think the ink will stick to highly glossy paper.
